Zack scratches his head as he stares at the emails on the computer that Celeste allows him to borrow. His eyes scan through dozens of rejection emails, each one a punch to his gut. He rubs his temples, trying to ease the tension building up.
He glances at his tattered leather wallet and takes another heavy sigh. His phone lights up and he reads the message from Trina. It is the amount of tuition he needs to pay and how to pay it. And now, his situation presses him down further, making it hard to breathe.
Feeling defeated, Zack continues to search for job posts, his desperation creeping in. Finally, he comes across an advertisement for an online loan facility. He hesitates for a moment, but then clicks on the link. Maybe this is his last chance to make enough money to pay his tuition and survive until Celeste arrives and he can look for a new job.
“Hello, Borrower,” a flashing marquee greets him as the website loads. “We’re here to help you with all your financial needs. What can we do for you today?”
Zack takes a deep breath and begins to type out his plea for a loan, hoping against hope that this will be the solution to his problems.
And so, he fills out the virtual forms with a haste born from desperation. He skims over the terms and conditions that hint at a disadvantageous situation against the borrower. However, he can risk it, if it means that he can provide for his sisters, and not to beg Celeste for help again.
“Damn it,” he mutters under his breath, the cursor hovering over the ‘Agree and Sign’ button.
He knows the loan can potentially put him in a worse situation than he already is. But he can’t afford to think about that now. All he needs to think about is how to provide for his sisters and survive until Celeste comes back.
Closing his eyes, he takes a deep breath and clicks the button. The contract is signed, sealed, and delivered to the loan agency. He immediately receives a confirmation email stating that the funds will be transferred to his account within three business days.
Zack sighs in relief, feeling a weight lifted off his shoulders for the first time since Celeste left. He spends the next couple of days anxiously checking his bank account every few hours, waiting for the loan amount to arrive.
Finally, on the third day, he receives a notification that the money has arrived in his account. Without wasting any time, Zack transfers the full amount to Trina’s tuition fees and then heads straight to the grocery store. He carefully counts each item as he places them in his cart, making sure to stay within budget. It’s not much, but it’s enough to last him until Celeste returns.
As he’s paying for the groceries at the cashier, Zack can’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that he’s able to provide for his sisters without having to ask for Celeste’s help.
Returning to the apartment, he unpacks the groceries, lining them neatly in Celeste’s refrigerator — lettuce, tomatoes, bread, and eggs. He can feel a small swelling of pride in his chest.
As he places the last carton of milk on the shelf and closes the refrigerator door, he pauses for a moment to let the cool draft wash over him.
After a while, Zack sits in front of the laptop, scrolling through job postings once again. He’s determined to find a steady source of income to support himself and his sisters.
“Come on, come on,” he mutters, clicking on each post that catches his eye.
Suddenly, a message pops up from an ex-classmate. “Hey man, heard you’re looking for a job. My company is hiring. Wanna apply?”
Zack’s heart races as he quickly responds, “Yes! What’s the company?”
“It’s a packaging and shipping company,” the message reads. “I can refer you. Just send me your resume.”
Without hesitation, Zack updates his resume and sends it over to his friend.
Just as he’s about to close his laptop and head out to run some errands, he receives another email the same company. They want him to come in for an interview the next day. Excitement runs through him as he starts planning what he’ll wear and how he’ll impress the interviewer.
The next day, Zack arrives at Swift Pack ten minutes early. As soon as he steps inside the office building, he takes a deep breath. He enters the conference room where the interview will take place. The interviewer introduces himself as Mr. John and asks Zack about his previous work experience.
“I’ve worked in packaging and shipping before,” Zack answers confidently. “I’m familiar with handling fragile items and I have good attention to detail.”
Mr. John nods approvingly before moving on to ask about how well Zack works under pressure.
“I’ve had my fair share of stressful situations,” Zack replies with a small smile. “But I always manage to get things done efficiently.”
After what feels like hours of answering questions and going through scenarios, Mr. John stands up and extends his hand. “Thank you for coming in today, Zack.”
“Thank you as well. When will I be able to know the result?”
“I will send you a message in a few days.”
************Zack’s heart sinks as he watches the numbers on his bank account decrease rapidly. The grocery expenses and his job search have taken a toll on his loaned amount, and he can feel a knot forming in his stomach. How is he going to pay back his loan now?
He tries to push away his worries as he makes dinner for himself. Maybe he can ask for an update from his friend now? To see if he passed the interview last time?
He takes out his phone and messages his friend, hoping for some good news. But then, his heart sinks as he reads his message.
“Sorry man. They told me that they can’t hire you due to the robbery at your previous workplace.”
Robbery? It’s not like it is his fault. He was so close to getting a job and now it feels like another door has been slammed shut?!
“What am I going to do now?” he whispers to himself.
Frustrated, he slams the laptop shut and sinks back into the chair. He rakes a hand through his hair, feeling the pressure of his financial situation. It’s like a knife against his neck, very ready to draw blood from him.
With a heavy sigh, he pulls out his phone and begins to call every contact he has saved before, desperate for any job leads. But each call ends in disappointment, as they all tell him that there are no openings at the moment.
He then checks his bank account again. Panic sets in as he realizes that the first payment for his loan is due in a few days, and he has no way of paying it off. Defeated, he walks back onto his bed and lies on it, wondering how he will ever make it out of this financial hole.
“I will extend my vacation for a few more weeks.”Zack rereads Celeste’s text message for a hundred times. Since then, days have turned into weeks with no luck in finding a job. He stares at the overdue notice from the loan facility. His money is quickly depleting. He has been trying so hard to find a job, but it seems like every door is closing on him.“I can’t believe I missed the first payment,” he mutters to himself. He begins to feel desperate as he realizes that he won’t be able to pay next month as well, if he won’t get a job soon.He sits on the couch and stares blankly at the TV, trying to distract himself from all his worries. Suddenly, there’s a sound coming from the door. Zack gets up just in time to find Celeste standing there with a big smile on her face.“Hey Zack!” she exclaims, holding up a shopping bag filled with goodies. “I’m back from vacation!”Zack forces a smile. Seeing her again, he feels relieved, but at the same time, he feels annoyed.“That’s great,” he mutt
“Why are you so slow?!” Celeste scolds. She meets him by the door and snatches the bag of groceries that she asked him for. “It’s painful, ugh! I need my pain reliever since an hour ago.”She takes what she needs and leaves him by the door. She moves to the living room, not even noticing the beating he has just endured just because she went away and been very happy while on her vacation! She turns towards him and snaps, “Hurry up with the other groceries, Zack! What are you standing there for?”“I-I’m sorry,” he stammers weakly, trying not to show his pain.Celeste rolls her eyes and shakes her head before returning her attention to the bag.“Do you need anything else?” he asks, trying to sound helpful.“Just my pain reliever… Where is it…” Celeste grumbles as she rummages through the groceries. “And probably some snacks.”“Here you go,” he says, handing her the pain reliever.“Hmm, you’re not as useless as I think you are,” she says and snatches the medicine from him.Zack flinches wh
“What happened to him?” “He was beaten up. Someone saw him in the alley and called for help to get him here.” Zack groans as he blinks and tries to focus on the voices around him. His eyes slowly adjust and he sees two figures standing over him. He immediately recognizes one of them as Celeste. He tries to sit up, but pain shoots through his body and he groans again. “Celeste?” he whimpers. “Are you now ready to tell me what’s happening with you?” she asks, a scolding tone in her voice. He grimaces as memories of the beating flood back into his mind. He winces in pain, trying to sit up again. He was beaten up more than he thought. “You’ve been badly beaten up, Zack. You need to rest,” the male nurse says as he places a hand on Celeste’s shoulders. “Be kind, Celeste. I will leave now, but if you need help, just tell me.“ She nods and when the nurse leaves and closes the door, Zack fears the incoming admonishment. She didn’t speak immediately though, but she moves closer and check
*********** TRIGGER WARNING: Self harm and Suicide. Consider yourself warned. ************ Zack hunches over in the corner of his room in Celeste’s apartment. He returned from the hospital yesterday and he hasn’t left his room since then. He is afraid to come across the loan sharks again. Thankfully, Celeste is too angry to request things from him. He shifts his attention to the window, which is covered in blinds, not allowing any light to flicker inside his room — or Celeste’s room, since she is the one paying for the entire apartment. “Useless,” he whispers in the darkness. He already knows it. He is fucking useless, but Celeste should have been more gentle about it, even if it is true. How can she dismiss his struggles with such callous indifference? He is also her family. Besides, it is also partly her fault, right? And now, he has hurt her, too. He scratches his head and hides his face. He doesn’t want to hurt her like that. He just wanted her to see his worth. That’s all he
Zack’s consciousness flickers like a faulty bulb of light, thrusting him back into the realm of the living with a jarring dissonance. His eyelids pry open, his gaze fixed on the bland ceiling. A sterile scent mingles with antiseptic as he realizes that he is back in the hospital again. He can even hear the sound of a machine beeping in a steady cadence. Zack sits up, but his body is aching. He feels weak and there are some tubes connected to him. He is about to take it off him when a voice says, “Easy now.” He shifts his attention to the voice and finds the same male nurse who acts more than a friend to Celeste. He snorts. He is about to say something when he realizes that he feels exhausted. “You are in a hospital, Zack,” he says. “Do you remember me?” He looks away. “The man Celeste is fucking,” he says. His throat is raw and dry. “Oh, you are still jealous,” he says, chuckling while giving him a glass of water. “She’s my cousin. I am not jealous.” “Just angry, huh?” he asks.
Zack freezes as Celeste wraps her arms around his neck. He doesn’t know how to respond. She is crying and trembling and the arms around him are getting tighter. “Zack, please let me help you,” she offers again. “You’ve been adrift for far too long.” His throat tightens. The walls he has built around himself are beginning to crumble under the weight of her words. Rather, her words feel like a lifeline tossed to him. Should he really grab it? Will his pride allow it? But he has been receiving her help for quite a while, right? It’s just a matter of finally admitting it. When he doesn’t respond, Celeste says with her voice trembling, “Why do you hate me so much?” Her initial anger, hot and bright, begins to wane, replaced by anguish and pain instead. “I don’t hate you,” Zack finally replies. “I think I just... I envy you.” She continues to cry, his shoulder getting wet with her tears. In truth, Zack wants her to hit him instead, rather than her, hugging him like this, trembling, as i
*********** TRIGGER WARNING: Violence and Attempted Rape. Consider yourself warned. ************ Zack glances at Celeste, a silent exchange of dread passing between them. “Listen,” he starts, trying to reason with the barging men. “I don’t have money right now, but I promise I will pay.” “And we warned you before,” Adi says. “Just steal it from that woman over there.” “How much was it?” Celeste whispers to Zack. “Don’t bother, Celeste,” he says, not wanting to involve her in it. Suddenly, Celeste steps forward. “How much is his debt?” she asks again, her voice laced with defiance. Zack pales at the sight of her standing up for him, for them. “Celeste…” he tries to intervene, but she brushes him off. “I just told you I will help, right?” she says, before turning to face the goons again. “How much was it?” she asks again, this time louder. “Ten thousand dollars,” Adi replies with a sly smirk on his face. Zack gasps. It has already ballooned that much?! Celeste turns her atte
Zack’s mind races, trying to make sense of what’s happening now. It looks like the screen of an ordinary video game, but smaller and miniaturized with fewer details. And besides… Attributes Statistics? Death? An empty Consequence? The system? What does it all mean? Then, remembering the urgency of his situation, he shifts his attention to Celeste. Her eyes are closed tightly, her face a picture of fear and disgust. A notification appears again. “Being a first-time user of the Zenith System, all your attributes will be reset and all wounds will be healed.” There’s a ting, and Zack stands up, discovering that his body feels light and energized. There is no more pain and exhaustion. The wounds on his face and body disappear as if they are never there. He looks around, everything is still moving in slow motion. Without a second thought, he moves towards Celeste, who is still struggling under Adi’s weight. He can feel the power coursing through him, urging him to protect her. He grabs
