The nurse gave him an apologetic look. “I’m so sorry but there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“Is this your hospital policy? That anyone who comes here should be refused treatment?” Aiden’s  face was expressionless but on the inside he was breaking. He glanced at his daughter who was still unconscious and pale in his arms, clearly she was in a lot of pain. “Please do something, I can foot the bills.”

“Are you sure about that?” A familiar person said in a sarcastic tone of voice, Caspian returned with a smirk on his face. “Do you think you’ll be able to pay for your daughter’s treatment now that you have no money?”

Aiden was itching to throw a punch at him to wipe the sarcastic smile off his face but he restrained himself. “What did you do?”

“Nothing much, just spoke to some people here, that’s all,” Then he burst into laughter. “Do you think I was simply going to let you off after what you did, it’s unfortunate that it’s a little girl’s life that’s on the line now. Tsk.”

“I would take my leave now.” The nurse gave Aiden a sympathetic look and shot a dirty look at Caspian when he wasn’t looking before she left.

Aiden clenched his fist, knowing that it was a lost cause, he turned around, prepared to leave with his daughter. Instead of arguing with Caspian, he found it much more productive to go to a different hospital.

Caspian stood with a smug expression on his face, his stance was full of arrogance but as he saw Aiden leaving, he grew confused for a second. “Hey? Where are you going?”

Four people arrived in front of Aiden, preventing him from leaving. “Yes where are you going?”

“Big brother Caspian has not given you the permission to leave.”

“You have to apologize.”

“Yes, if you want to get your daughter treated here.” They all said one after the other, it was evident from their behavior that they were Caspian’s friends or… lackeys was a fitting word.

“What is the meaning of this, Caspian?”

“Why don’t you grovel on the floor and apologize to this young master and with just a simple phone call from me, everything would be sorted out. Good right?”

“Yes!” The four men echoed simultaneously. “Big brother Caspian is magnanimous.”

“Yes, he has a big heart, he respects the elderly and loves the young.”

“And what if I say no, huh?” Aiden turned around with a strange smile on his face. “What are you going to do to me?”

Caspian felt a shudder run down his spine, before he could respond, the same nurse from earlier showed up. “Please I’m going to have to ask you all to leave, no infighting is allowed in the hospital.”

Aiden leaned closer to Caspian who was still stunned. “I would take my leave now, Caspian but I’m going to warn you all to watch your backs because I would beat you up so bad that even the devil would weep on your behalf,” He pulled back with a smile on his face. “I wish you all a lovely day.”

Caspian was still frozen on the spot, his lackeys could only watch as Aiden walked away with his daughter, no one made any move to stop him. After a while, Caspian broke out of the trance he was stuck in. “Let us go.”

Few minutes later, a figure appeared behind the nurse and muttered. “Hey, what are you looking at?”

As the nurse turned around, she was almost stunned silly by the woman before her. “Beautiful,” She said subconsciously.

The woman just giggled lightly with a hand elegantly placed over her mouth but a blush appeared on the nurse cheeks. “Thanks for the compliment.”

One could easily see her neatly trimmed nails that was almost pink, the nurse forced herself to look down, feeling almost inferior compared with beauty standards. “How can I help you?”

“Who was that man earlier?”

“Which of them?”

“The one with the child? What’s wrong with his daughter and why was she refused treatment?”

“The other man must have something against him and he spoke to one of the higher-ups, the rest is as you saw. I was able to check the girl’s vitals before I discharged her. She’s down with a fever, it’s almost critical and it’s worrisome. If she doesn’t get proper treatment, it could be dangerous.” The nurse answered carefully.

A strange look appeared on the other woman’s face, after a moment of silence, she continued. “I need a favor from you.”

Caspian was in a taxi back to his rundown apartment with a worried looking his face, Zia had already regained consciousness but she was still very pale. “Daddy, I’m fine.” She forced a smile on her face.

“I know that sweetie, you are Daddy’s brave girl.” He gently patted her head. Caspian had been a big interference and nuisance, every hospital he went to, Zia was refused treatment but Aiden soon realized that what it took was having connections.

Power.

He clenched on of his fists in his side. ‘All it took was having power, enough to manipulate the fate and lives of others. With enough power, you could control the lives of others on the palm of your hands.’

When they arrived at the apartment, he got out of his taxi with Zia and paid the fare. “Come on, I’ll get you some pain medications for now.”

Zia nodded, she was young but she understood that her father must be dealing with a lot. “Okay.” As they entered the house, no one noticed the car that soon stopped in front of the apartment.

If the nurse from the first hospital that Aiden had went to was present, she would have recognized the driver as the woman who  spoke to her. The woman stepped out of the car with two bags in her hands. She wore glasses and a veil across her face.

The metallic buzz of the lock disengaging was the only warning before the door creaked open.Detective Harper stepped in, his coat still damp from the morning rain. No cuffs. No theatrics. The bruised pride was still there — barely — but the cocky smirk that once danced on his lips was long gone.Harper pulled out the chair and sat down across from him. “Didn’t eat your breakfast. Again.”“Maybe I’m not hungry,” Bryden murmured.Harper leaned forward. “Or maybe you’re realizing you were never Zain’s golden boy.”Bryden’s eyes flickered, but he didn’t look up.Harper placed a photograph on the table — a grainy shot of Zain leaving Kova Holdings last night, flanked by bodyguards. The evening had arrived wrapped in a moody breeze. The estate grounds were dimly lit, save for the warm glow emanating from the lanterns along the stone path. Aiden stood alone on the terrace, a tumbler of whiskey in hand, his mind preoccupied. He had just tucked Zia into bed with Silvana by his side — another chapter of fairy tales read, another night of calm he feared wouldn’t last. So was the one within.Aiden turned at the soft crunch of footsteps behind him.Detective Harper. In a charcoal jacket, collar turned up, eyes sharp and serious.“You came in through the garden gate?” Aiden asked dryly.Harper offered a faint smirk. “Didn’t want your cameras to log me on the front porch. Or Amelia’s paranoia to flare up.”Aiden motioned toward a chair. “You said this couldn’t wait.”Harper sat, placing a sealed folder between them.“It’s Zain.”Aiden’s jaw tensed. “What now?”Harper opened the folder — inside, two photos and a thumb drive

Outside, the city flickered like a restless machine, unaware that behind the bulletproof glass, a storm was forming.Zain leaned back in his chair, a glass of aged bourbon in one hand and a thin cigar smoldering in the other. The mansion was silent except for the tick of the antique wall clock and the occasional flick of flames from the hearth. Aiden stood by the tall windows, his arms folded tight against his chest, staring out into the inky blackness beyond the glass. His mind was racing.Silvana sat opposite Amelia, who was curled in the corner of the velvet couch, her coat still on, the half-zipped travel bag by her feet. Her mascara was smeared, her eyes red from crying. But the tremble in her hands hadn’t stopped.Aiden turned, his voice cold but steady.“You tried to run. You were willing to vanish without saying goodbye to your daughter. That alone tells me this isn’t just about lies—it’s about fear. So talk, Amelia. Now.”Silvana leaned forward gently. “Tell the truth. The real truth.”Amelia looked up at them, broken, ashamed, and desperate.“You think you know everything,” she said shakily. “You don’t.”Silvana’s voice stayed calm. “Then help us understand.”Amelia wiped at her eyes. “I didn’t c

The soft rustling of pages and the sweet scent of Zia’s cherry shampoo filled the air.Aiden sat on the floor beside Zia’s bed, the storybook open across his lap. The dragon is not mean like the ones on TV.”Silvana grinned. “That’s because this dragon was misunderstood. Like most creatures with a roar.”Aiden turned the final page. “The End.”Zia clapped softly and yawned, her eyelids drooping. “Can we read another one tomorrow?”“Of course, my love,” Silvana whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Now sleep. You’ve got school in the morning.”As Zia drifted off, her breathing evened out in moments. Aiden and Silvana waited a while longer, ensuring she was fast asleep before th
