Aurora had expected Gus’s reply to be something of that nature, but she had never expected the look on his face. Shock and surprise that soon transformed to confusion.

“Well, you'll have to trust me on this one, Gus. We've thought about it already, and we're happy to reveal to you that your housing arrangements might have to be changed, but it's going to be footed by our company. While we work on the staff quarters, you guys will be in a different lodging, somewhere close to the fast food.”

Gus shook his head fiercely.

“Nope, not going to happen. We're here because we don't pay transport. Of course, we foot the utility bill, and that's just it aside from our taxes. We can't afford to live somewhere else.”

Aurora scratched the back of her neck tiredly.

At that moment, she found herself wondering if the passion and attachment the workers showed for the fast food wasn't attached to the fact that they didn't have to pay rent and transpor

Once Lutenant got to his office, he removed his coat, and opened the door wider for Aurora to enter. “Here's what you'll do, Aurora. Check the expenses we're going to incur tomorrow, and try to get back to me as soon as possible. Contact the company that does the bulldozing of buildings as well. We want to have them there as soon as the sun rises. We can't waste anymore time on this, you know.” She nodded, taking down everything she had said, and it made him wonder where she had gotten a pen and a jotter from. Had it just magically appeared in her hand? “Yes sir. Anything else?” “Tomorrow, the whole team meets here by eight o'clock before moving to the site. I believe that we're going to do excellently well on this project, Aurora.” She nodded, then scratched her neck. “You're welcome, sir. Is that all there is? I'd like to start making those calls now, sir.” Lut nodded. “Good, good. We'll see tomorrow m

“Where do you see the Déjà vu project going?”It was a strange question from his father, but one thing Lutenant had learnt even when he had still been in the university was to always have an answer for everything. There was nothing that was out of depth for him, as long as he set his mind to it.“It’s going to be a very good one. At the moment, we have problems with trying to please and maintain the staff, but I believe we'll come through in the end. I'm trying to make them recognize that we accept whatever they want, but at the same time, they should acknowledge that they're in a work setting. Whatever we ask of them, they must do.”His father's eyes glinted with a light that said he was pleased by the answer he had just provided.“That's good. It's important, you know, to let them know their boundaries because how you start is how you will continue. Are you ready to move? You can go in and lock your office, then meet me at the parking lot.”Nodding, Lut went to his office, grabbed h

Back then, it had been one of the most expensive places to stay on campus. Food there was expensive, but everything was quality. Only the privileged and the rich stayed there. Now, he wasn't even the privileged or the rich, Lut acknowledged, scratching his neck, he indirectly owned the elites lodge. How fast one’s life could change.“You'll need to come out, Lut. I've wanted to show this to you for a while now. This building belongs to you, even though it's not in your name at the moment. It's all yours, you know this. And also,at some point, you'll need to finish your education…”“I can always pick another school, dad. I'm sick of this place.”His father patted his knee again.“I know exactly how you feel. And if you don't feel comfortable coming out of the car, then you can stay inside. I'll go in, look at a few things, and we'll be out in a jiffy.”His father left the car, closing the door softly.Watching his father go, Lut knew he couldn't stay in the car. He swallowed hard, open

“Why is the house so hot?”In the Johnson's ranch home which was located in Texas, it was a usual occurrence for the house to be so hot.But that was where the problem lied, Ariel wasn't used to the heat. She preferred the city, where the weather was mild, and the heat didn't make you almost scream in discomfort because of the beads of perspiration that went down your body. One of the house staff, Seraphina, shrugged, before speaking.“During the night, madam, we had a slight issue with the electricity distribution. There is light in the barn, but it doesn't seem to reach the main house.”She paused before continuing.“However, I think the electricity company has been called to take a look at it.”Ariel didn't know a lot of the house staff because she spent all her time in the city. But anytime she came around, she loved it, if only the heat didn't exist. The food and vegetables were fresh. She could ride horses and ponies, and even the smell of the countryside was refreshing, and dif

Armed with the band that clipped her hair in place, the riding boots, and then the trousers, Ariel could tell that she looked funny. But she liked it because Richard liked it as well.“Which horse are we riding today, my love? You get to choose.”Ariel smiled. She knew some of the horses by names, and had forgotten some. As a child, she was fascinated by horses, and had a pony for her Thirteenth birthday. Now, she was fascinated by fast cars and beautiful dresses, how fast she had changed over the years. She glanced at one of the older horses, and through it's gentle nature and the black star on her forehead, she recognized Midnight, one of the horses she had always loved as a child.“Let's use Midnight. I don't know if she can remember me now, but we used to love each other when I was a kid.”Nodding, Richard went to work. Patting the horse, he gently guided it out, and Ariel was slightly impressed. Back in the university, he had a thing for horses, and had always visited the barns i

As soon as she came down from Midnight's back, Ariel found her way back to the main house. While Richard stayed back to ride a little before putting the horses back into the stable, she decided to go for a drink and some snacks. As she made her way back to the house, she smiled, thinking about the few minutes she had just spent with her just engaged lover. She could see why he wanted them to marry so quickly. .He loved her, and they couldn't do without each other. As she got closer to the house, she squealed in surprise and pure happiness when she saw that the power supply had been turned back on.Seraphina, who was standing next to the door, held out a towel, ready to help her mistress out with the beads of perspiration that had gathered on her brow and her forehead.“Thank you, Seraphina.”Seraphina bowed, her rosy cheeks lighting up.“Did the electricity company come?”“Yes madam, they did. They left the bill on the kitchen table.”Accepting the towel, she mopped her face gingerly

“And you're talking about jewels? You've got to be kidding me.”At that moment, Ariel stopped touching it, her mind reeling. Before then, she was thinking of calling Lut and thanking him, but Richard's words had sown that seed of doubt that had been lingering in her mind for a while now.“How did you receive it?”“Seraphina said a delivery man brought it to the house while we were with the horses.”Richard's laughter was condescending.“And you believe that? You actually believe that Lut, who can't even get himself good clothes can buy jewelleries from where…Tommy's… for you?”At that moment, the necklace on Ariel's neck felt like heavy lead. She wanted to get it off by all means.“Well, if Lut didn't send it, then who did?”And it was when she saw Richard's knowing smile that she shrieked in happiness.“Richard? Don't tell me you bought this.”Richard smiled, his eyes lightning up immediately.“And don't tell me that you fell for my little prank. How in heaven's name did you even beli

Aurora looked at the document, her hands trembling slightly. She couldn't believe it. It was the document legalising the renovation of Déjà vu, and also commending her for the good work that she had done so far. She stared at it, not knowing what to do with it, then smiled at him. “That is our grand prize, Aurora. And it's just the beginning. By the time we're done with the Déjà vu project, customers will be coming in dozens. I honestly can't wait.” Aurora nodded, touched by his words. When he had told her to follow him, she had been afraid that she had done something wrong. But now, she was happier than ever. To her, the opportunities were endless. If she succeeded in impressing the CEO and Lutenant as well, there were going to be a lot of referrals and a lot of jobs coming her way. She had been promised that by her boss himself. “The most important thing, sir, is keeping the people working with us happy. We've done that. We can only

“Good morning sir.” Hubert, his driver, greeted him with enthusiasm. He looked as if he had been waiting for him all the while. The car key was already in the ignition, and the man looked ready to peel the car into the road and begin driving at a speed that pleased him, which was Hubert's customary way of driving.Lutenant didn't care much about the way he was going to reach work that day. He preferred Hubert driving him because no matter how fast he drove, he was able to slow down before the police noticed that he was going past the speed limit. It was a fun thing to do.Hopefully, he never got caught because Lut knew how difficult it was getting the police to believe that he hadn't intended to drive past the speed limit.A few minutes later, he was out of the car as it had stopped in the garage of the consortium. Leaving the car, he made his way into the elevator, which took him directly to his office. As soon as he opened the door, he was hit by the strong scent of Aurora's perfum

  • A befitting welcome

Before Aurora got to work that morning, she was surprised to see the door open a few minutes after she had sent her best friend the text regarding her moving from the hotel back to the house.“Natalie? I didn't expect you so soon.”Her best friend looked as though life with Carl had its perks. She had a bag of groceries from the popular Macmillan store in one hand, and in another was a box of pizza.“I decided to jump in, arrange my things. I'll be going back to Carl's this evening. Did I tell you he is planning to get a place so that we can start life afresh? He's also planning something huge for my birthday. I don't know what it is yet, but I know that he has something planned.”Aurora didn't comment, knowing how difficult her best friend could be most times. Natalie and misinterpretations were a normal occurrence. The last thing she wanted was her best friend quarreling with her over something that was irrelevant.Such as Carl and his inability to stick to one relationship.“Well,

Where is he?”“There! There!”Richard was fast. He had run a lot back in highschool, and he hadn't forgotten how easy it was to forget everything and let his body glide. • Midnight rescue

Richard didn't know how to start. He didn't have an invite, he didn't know the owner of the party, and he was only there because he wanted to get his girlfriend, who he was certain was already drunk and take her home. The first man stared at him in irritation, his eyebrow arched.“I'm guessing you didn't hear me earlier, mister. If you don't have an invite, I'm afraid you can't come to the party.”Richard didn't know what to do, so he did the first thing that came to his mind. He pushed the first guard, the frown on his face huge, and began to make his way into the warehouse. The other man stopped him, pushing him backwards.“Are you out of your mind? I'm certain you don't want to get shot at, mister. And the only way to do that is to pick your sorry self and leave this place this instant.”Richard squared up, refusing to admit defeat.“Look, there's someone I need to see there immediately, and if she doesn't come out this minute, her life will be in danger.”The first guard scoffed.

  • Party’s over

Tapping the table, he grinned at her.“Well, you've got that right. My father talked to me earlier today, and he maintained that he needed my answer considering the list of companies he had given me to look into.”He watched Aurora nod, seemingly interested.“Well, he said Johnson fabrics and co is trying to sell. From my findings, the company is going for five hundred million dollars, and while that's too much, I can see the advantages of the buy. The forecast considering the lifespan of the business isn't good, but with enough work and effort, I believe we can turn it around.”She shrugged, her beer in one hand, one leg crossed over the other. She looked like something out of a picture, as though she wasn't real, but a model in far away Europe.“Well, you sound as if you've already made your choice, Lut.”He rolled his eyes, sipping the vodka slowly now. The vodka was starting to get to him, the bitterness and the tipsy feeling that was settling like a blanket. If he was going to be

  • Beyond the boardroom

“Well, that brings our outing today to an end. Mr Cleveland is caught up in traffic and sadly won't be able to make it. We'll have to push the meeting to tomorrow.”Richard barely heard a word of what Mr Johnson had said. His mind was focused solely on Ariel, and the fact that she had just ended the call on him without even waiting to hear him out.“Richard?”“Yes sir, I understand. And I've heard you.”“That's besides the point. Will you be available tomorrow? I have a strong feeling that Mr Cleveland is going to be our buyer. Are you busy tomorrow? Classes or anything of that nature?”Richard shook his head in reply. He had a bunch of classes the next day, but he wasn't going to go. First things first, he had to stop joking with the woman who also served as his next source of livelihood. If there was anything he had to do at that moment,it was to make sure that Ariel was okay, and that she wasn't seeing someone else.Seeing someone else would serve as the fatal blow. It would eventu

They're starting to lay off the older workers, and I was sorting the good applications and tossing the rest. It's tough work.”She grinned at him.“Well, I'm proud of you. That shows you're not the lazy brat I always thought you to be.”He laughed, and tapping his steering wheel with his thumb, he began to speak again, eyes on the road.“Guess what? Dylan's elder brother has been arrested. He was on his way out of the state when he was caught by police officers. It's not looking too good for them now. With the phone evidence, the attack on you and the hired killers arrested, they've made this an easy case for us without even knowing it.”She nodded, not knowing exactly how to feel.Sometimes, she felt happy because she was certain that she wasn't the only woman who had gone through harassment in that office, but she was also afraid because she didn't want all the unnecessary attention and publicity on her once quiet life.“Well, you'll have to appear in court by next week, Aurora. By the time the sun had dipped completely, Aurora had ordered room service one more time. After eating, she slipped on a jersey and her old sneakers that she had bought at a cheaper price last December before Christmas. She had always been a runner, even from her highschool days. But the more she committed her time to being the best in the consortium, the more she abandoned her dreams of doing the marathon some day. However, with the recent happenings, she knew she badly needed that run. Looking into the mirror, she was proud of the woman she had become after the case. Not only had she survived almost being killed by a group of men who wanted to kill her and destroy evidence, she had also survived living in fear and being left by her best friend, who had decided the best time to be a lover was when she needed her most.Smiling to herself because she wondered how long Carl and Natalie's relationship was going to last, she took off, jogging slowly at first, but picking speed later on.Wi

“The meeting was brief. How are you, Edward?”“Good, sir. I'm good. I came to inform Lut here of the lapses in the recruitment department. We're letting a few older workers go, so there must be someone going through those applications on a daily basis. Aurora is still in her recovery phase, so Lut here said he's working in her place, and when she comes back, she'll owe him hours.”Mr James nodded before sitting.“That's good. Excellent work from you both. I've been trying to call you, Lut. The police have just arrested Dylan Rick's older brother. He was on his way to Seattle, but they managed to apprehend him before he got on the plane.”Lutenant smiled in spite of himself. It was good news. Each and everybody that was involved in making Aurora's life a living hell deserved what was coming to them.“However, the company's legal team is working on releasing them on bail, and the case begins next week. I'll have to cancel all my meetings, because I want to be there to see them go down. T
