“Hello Douglas.”

Richard removed his coat, his hand instinctively going to his trouser pocket as he searched for the pack of cigarettes that had been in there a while ago.

Finding it, he slipped a stick out of the pack, putting it in between his lips and lighting it with a lighter Douglas had handed him.

For the first time since he had come back from the Johnson's ranch house, he decided to go to school. And he regretted his decision instantly.

The lectures had been tiring, he needed a cigarette frequently, and his mind was never on what was being taught, but on how much time he was wasting by just sitting in the class and doing absolutely nothing.

As soon as the last lecturer left the hall, he carried his backpack, heading down to Douglas's apartment.

Douglas's apartment was nothing like the Johnson's home. The fact that he ever had to compare them made him decide that maybe he actually deserved a better life than the one he had been living previously.

Douglas's apartment smelt of bo

When Ariel arrived in the city, the first thing she had done was to go and get her hair done. She loved the countryside, but she strongly felt that she needed to get rid of the country air around her. That included her hair in a ponytail, and her fingernails that looked as though she still belonged in her family’s farm.“Mum, I'm going down to the salon. Need to get my hair and nails done as soon as possible. And I think I'll see some friends along the way as well.”Her mother nodded, barely looking up from the news she was watching, a cup of coffee in her hand. Since coming back from the countryside, her mother seemed to act differently. To Ariel, it seemed as though she was now focused on her family and nothing else. She woke up, prepared breakfast, and then did the laundry. “Who is it? Who could it be?” Aurora couldn't make out her friend's face purely in the semi-darkness,but she was sure that it was as white as hers. She swallowed hard, the only sound in the room was the sound of the two friends breathing evenly. When Natalie made a move to put on the bedside lamp, Aurora held her friend's hand securely, shaking her head. “No, no, don't do that. They might be watching. We don't know how many of them there are.” Natalie quietly stood up from the bed, and Aurora tried to hold her down. Natalie always did the worst things when she was scared. It showed in the way she had run as soon as she saw Carl's wife with the gun, which had led to her being shot. “What are we going to do?” At that moment, Aurora couldn't answer the question. But her mind had already been working over time. She didn't know, but her mind knew. “Look, here's what we do. Grab your phone, let's go to the attic. From t

While Aurora and Natalie waited in the attic, the man who had entered her house had gone through the other rooms. Not finding his target, he had decided to go into the attic. Even though she knew that she was supposed to end the call, she didn't. It was just like Lut had told her, she had to keep the phone on and the call in session, in order for him to know that she was safe. And she had done just that. But as soon as the first thud came against the door, she swore, her heart slamming repeatedly in her chest. She looked at Natalie in the semi-darkness which was only lit up by the screen of her phone, and could see the same fear she saw in her friend's eyes in hers. “What are we going to do, Rora? He's…he's..here.” The man behind the door said something, and the next thing, the old door of the attic that clearly wasn't strong enough gave way. At that moment, she managed to tell Lut that she was in danger, just as

Without her phone and the recording, and without her as well, there was no case. Without her, Dylan Rick was going to go out of police custody a free man.“What do we do now, man?” The man next to her asked.“We take them downstairs, I cannot stand the dust in this place. We're going to shoot them there, then make it look like a suicide, just like we were told. And as though she killed her best friend here.”“You heard the man, ladies. Move!”Using the gun, the man pressed it even deeper into her side, and she had to move because of the sharp pain.Aurora always looked at her house with pride, but at that moment, she looked at it with a certain sadness. She didn't believe that she was going to die there, in the apartment she had come to call home. And to think that she had never imagined herself dying a death filled with pain.Plot twist, that was what was happening to her at the moment, and there was absolutely nothing she could do to change it.There was only one man now in the whol

But it was dark, and all she could see was the outline of Lut's face and body. However, at that moment, the police megaphone sounded, announcing their presence. It all happened so fast and within a matter of minutes. The door opened, revealing Lut's men, from the color of their camouflage to the white and black colour of the popular consortium security uniform. The lights came on, and at that moment, Aurora had a full glimpse of Lutenant for the first time. Lutenant, however, had other plans. As soon as the lights came on, he fired his gun, bringing the man whose hand was holding her neck firmly to his knees, the gun flying out of his hand in seconds.Where had he learnt how to shoot so well? The man fell to the floor with a groan, clutching his hand.Everything happened so fast, in a matter of seconds. Deciding to attack Aurora and destroy evidence?Their plan, unfortunately, had backfired. And at the moment, if Dylan had previously had a chance to walk free, it was literally impossible at the moment. “You are really going all in for this woman, Lutenant. I hope you know that you can fool others but not me.”Lut chuckled. To him, he wasn't even doing it to impress Aurora. She was in danger, and because he had the power to help, he did so.“Come on, dad. The company agreed to support them financially. I'm part of the company, and I did the same thing you would've done.”He watched his father smile.“Yes. But not in the manner you're doing it. You're letting her know that you're always going to be there for her no matter what. God knows if I would've let a call wake me up in the middle of the night. I'm a pretty busy man.”As he got ready to enter his Porsche, his father stretched his hand to shake him.“I'll be in the consortium as soon as I can. A very huge smile, quirky movements, and an occasional slap on the shoulder to Richard. His happiness made Richard happy as well.Mr Johnson was literally his father in-law. A win for the man was a win for him as well.“What do you say, Richard? Do you believe this? I knew that Mr Cleveland was wealthy, but throwing six hundred million at a company that might have a breakdown in five to six years is crazy. When you consider that he'll have to do a lot of improvements, you can see why it's unbelievable for me.”Richard scratched the back of his neck, looking at Mr Johnson matter of factly.“Do you want my honest opinion on this? We take the money and run.”Mr Johnson's laughter was loud, but he muffled it by turning to the balcony, putting his hand over his mouth.“Well, that's why you're not a businessman yet. We don't just take the money and run. I'm going to go higher. Seven hun

“Your first day back, and you don't want to have lunch with me? Come on, Aurora.”Aurora stared at him, on the verge of laughing. She had wanted to skip lunch because she knew how much work she had to do. The remnants of the recruitment files were still all over the place, and the earlier she fixed it, the better. She would never understand why director Edward had tried to offer her the position of the leader of the union. Just like that? She was looking forward to leading her quiet life in the sanctuary of her home, and all of a sudden, she was being offered the position of leading a Union?“You're my personal assistant, and you need to be there in case I need your help.”Shrugging, Aurora nodded.“Seems as if I don't have a choice.”“Is this about the meeting? Gosh, she had missed him so badly.“What time do I expect you back?”“Going to another party already, huh? You can't go without me this time, I assure you.”She rolled her eyes, punching him playfully across the shoulder.“No. I'll be helping mum to cook today. I think dad has forgotten, but today is their anniversary. He's been busy with everything, and you can't blame him. Mum says she'll love to have the anniversary dinner in the house, a specially prepared meal.”She had said a lot, but in actuality, all she wanted was him in her cold bed before she slept off.“Good. “Well, I'm sorry. I wasn't myself, and I'm certain we both know why.”Ariel's answer wasn't the best because she knew she was at fault, but she didn't care if the man she was about to marry had fought another man for her sake. He had put her in that position. If he had agreed to at least acknowledge her, she wouldn't have thought about going to the party or getting drunk in the first place. She didn't want to tag it his fault, but she felt that way.“Drink your coffee. It'll help you get yourself better.”She eyed him angrily, then sipped the coffee. She had missed him.Even when she had gone to the party, she had found out to her chagrin that she was badly in love with him. “Good morning sir.” Hubert, his driver, greeted him with enthusiasm. He looked as if he had been waiting for him all the while. The car key was already in the ignition, and the man looked ready to peel the car into the road and begin driving at a speed that pleased him, which was Hubert's customary way of driving.Lutenant didn't care much about the way he was going to reach work that day. He preferred Hubert driving him because no matter how fast he drove, he was able to slow down before the police noticed that he was going past the speed limit. It was a fun thing to do.Hopefully, he never got caught because Lut knew how difficult it was getting the police to believe that he hadn't intended to drive past the speed limit.A few minutes later, he was out of the car as it had stopped in the garage of the consortium. Leaving the car, he made his way into the elevator, which took him directly to his office. As soon as he opened the door, he was hit by the strong scent of Aurora's perfum

  • A befitting welcome

Before Aurora got to work that morning, she was surprised to see the door open a few minutes after she had sent her best friend the text regarding her moving from the hotel back to the house.“Natalie? I didn't expect you so soon.”Her best friend looked as though life with Carl had its perks. She had a bag of groceries from the popular Macmillan store in one hand, and in another was a box of pizza.“I decided to jump in, arrange my things. I'll be going back to Carl's this evening. Did I tell you he is planning to get a place so that we can start life afresh? He's also planning something huge for my birthday. I don't know what it is yet, but I know that he has something planned.”Aurora didn't comment, knowing how difficult her best friend could be most times. Natalie and misinterpretations were a normal occurrence. The last thing she wanted was her best friend quarreling with her over something that was irrelevant.Such as Carl and his inability to stick to one relationship.“Well,

Where is he?”“There! There!”Richard was fast. He had run a lot back in highschool, and he hadn't forgotten how easy it was to forget everything and let his body glide. Richard didn't know how to start. He didn't have an invite, he didn't know the owner of the party, and he was only there because he wanted to get his girlfriend, who he was certain was already drunk and take her home. The first man stared at him in irritation, his eyebrow arched.“I'm guessing you didn't hear me earlier, mister. If you don't have an invite, I'm afraid you can't come to the party.”Richard didn't know what to do, so he did the first thing that came to his mind. He pushed the first guard, the frown on his face huge, and began to make his way into the warehouse. The other man stopped him, pushing him backwards.“Are you out of your mind? I'm certain you don't want to get shot at, mister. And the only way to do that is to pick your sorry self and leave this place this instant.”Richard squared up, refusing to admit defeat.“Look, there's someone I need to see there immediately, and if she doesn't come out this minute, her life will be in danger.”The first guard scoffed.

Tapping the table, he grinned at her.“Well, you've got that right. My father talked to me earlier today, and he maintained that he needed my answer considering the list of companies he had given me to look into.”He watched Aurora nod, seemingly interested.“Well, he said Johnson fabrics and co is trying to sell. From my findings, the company is going for five hundred million dollars, and while that's too much, I can see the advantages of the buy. The forecast considering the lifespan of the business isn't good, but with enough work and effort, I believe we can turn it around.”She shrugged, her beer in one hand, one leg crossed over the other. She looked like something out of a picture, as though she wasn't real, but a model in far away Europe.“Well, you sound as if you've already made your choice, Lut.”He rolled his eyes, sipping the vodka slowly now. The vodka was starting to get to him, the bitterness and the tipsy feeling that was settling like a blanket. If he was going to be
