“We're going out tonight, we need to celebrate.”

Aurora dropped the keys to her mother's old sedan on the table, then stared quizzically at her best friend who was the only soul in the entire city who had a spare key to her apartment and could slip into it when she wasn't around.

“Celebrate? What for? And you should learn to call before breaking and entering, Natalie. You don't live here.”

Natalie's smile was dazzling. She was the exact opposite of Aurora. Where Aurora was an organized workaholic who believed that everything had a process, and a queue couldn't be skipped, her best friend was way different.

A graduate from the department of journalism in the university of Wisconsin, Natalie had probably dumped her degree after getting it because Aurora had never seen or heard of her best friend getting or maintaining a job.

If Natalie wasn't on vacation, she was on a boat somewhere, in the arms of an older man or a new lover.

She was promiscuous, and even though that wasn't Aurora's id

“How was Déjà vu?”Lutenant was surprised. Even after everyone had left the company, he had stayed back to go make concrete plans considering the fast food. He was going to do everything within his power to make sure that it was going to stand out—it was his work after all, and if it indeed succeeded, that was going to be one added to his resume. After he had finished working, he took the elevator downstairs. He hadn't been expecting his father at all, and when he saw the smiling face of Mr James in a suit that smelt and spoke of luxury, he broke into a smile that was mixed with confusion and surprise.“Dad. I never expected to see you here. Last I heard, you weren't in the state. Are you back now? For good?”His father shook his head, smiling.“You never can tell, son. The life of a businessman is never static. When you want to rule the world, you definitely can't do it by staying in a single place.” His father paused, then gestured to his driver, who was dressed in the same uniform

The table they had chosen overlooked the bridge and river in the city. It was a nice view at night, the street lights lighting up the entire bridge and making it look like a stairway to heaven—everything on it looked so bright.“Good evening gentlemen and welcome to hotel de la grande. The menus.”The menus were already on the table, but the young man who seemed to take great pride in his mustache to the point that he hadn't trimmed it off even though it was overgrown, still came to the table and handed it over to them.“I'll take the Seared Scallops “Au Gratin”.”Everything sounded strange to Lutenant, who looked at his menu over and over again, confused and not having the slightest idea of what to order.“Lut? The lad is here to take out orders.” His father reminded him, tapping the table impatiently.Giving up, Lut dropped the menu.“I'll take whatever he has chosen, thank you.”“I can see your dilemma,” his father began after the waiter left the table, “you'll get used to it, soon

  • The legacy of the supreme ruler   Making progress

“What's it going to take to pull down this place, Aurora?”Aurora swallowed hard. They were at the site of the fast food, and all she had wanted to do was look around, take a few notes, and then go back home where she was going to spend the rest of her day waiting for her best friend to come back from the previous day's escapade. But it seemed as though Lutenant, her boss, had other plans. All he had done was ask her questions again and again, and she didn't know how badly she was doing. Was she answering the questions correctly? Was she answering wrongly? She couldn't tell because with every answer, he kept his face straight, and then nodded.“Roughly twenty grand, sir. Actually, it depends. If we pull down everything, we stand a chance of losing the customers which have made the place what it is today. So, I'd say we do a redesign. Clean up the exterior, touch the interior, nothing that can take more than a month.”She watched Lut nod again, then stare at her.“That's right. Thing i

Aurora couldn't help but admire how firm he was becoming over it. To her, that was the only route they could take at the moment. If they also wanted things to go their way, then maybe it was time to change the strategy and tactics.“In a short while, ownership will be transferred, and they'll be working directly under us. They don't work according to our rules, and the door is open. They aren't the only workers in the city.”By the time he finished his short speech, they were already inside the fast food. They went straight to the counter, where a smiling brunette looked expectant and happy to receive and serve them. Her tag said Anna, and Aurora was quick to jump into handling the introductions. She would've allowed Lut to do it, but she wanted to show him that she could be in charge, in case there was a need for that.“Good morning, Anna, is it?”The waiter smiled, then took her outstretched hand, shaking it a little too happily. Was this the way she treated all her customers? Aurora had expected Gus’s reply to be something of that nature, but she had never expected the look on his face. Shock and surprise that soon transformed to confusion. “Well, you'll have to trust me on this one, Gus. We've thought about it already, and we're happy to reveal to you that your housing arrangements might have to be changed, but it's going to be footed by our company. While we work on the staff quarters, you guys will be in a different lodging, somewhere close to the fast food.” Gus shook his head fiercely. “Nope, not going to happen. We're here because we don't pay transport. Of course, we foot the utility bill, and that's just it aside from our taxes. We can't afford to live somewhere else.” Aurora scratched the back of her neck tiredly. At that moment, she found herself wondering if the passion and attachment the workers showed for the fast food wasn't attached to the fact that they didn't have to pay rent and transpor

Once Lutenant got to his office, he removed his coat, and opened the door wider for Aurora to enter. “Here's what you'll do, Aurora. Check the expenses we're going to incur tomorrow, and try to get back to me as soon as possible. Contact the company that does the bulldozing of buildings as well. We want to have them there as soon as the sun rises. We can't waste anymore time on this, you know.” She nodded, taking down everything she had said, and it made him wonder where she had gotten a pen and a jotter from. Had it just magically appeared in her hand? “Yes sir. Anything else?” “Tomorrow, the whole team meets here by eight o'clock before moving to the site. I believe that we're going to do excellently well on this project, Aurora.” She nodded, then scratched her neck. “You're welcome, sir. Is that all there is? I'd like to start making those calls now, sir.” Lut nodded. “Good, good. We'll see tomorrow m

“Where do you see the Déjà vu project going?”It was a strange question from his father, but one thing Lutenant had learnt even when he had still been in the university was to always have an answer for everything. There was nothing that was out of depth for him, as long as he set his mind to it.“It’s going to be a very good one. At the moment, we have problems with trying to please and maintain the staff, but I believe we'll come through in the end. I'm trying to make them recognize that we accept whatever they want, but at the same time, they should acknowledge that they're in a work setting. Whatever we ask of them, they must do.”His father's eyes glinted with a light that said he was pleased by the answer he had just provided.“That's good. It's important, you know, to let them know their boundaries because how you start is how you will continue. Are you ready to move? You can go in and lock your office, then meet me at the parking lot.”Nodding, Lut went to his office, grabbed h

Back then, it had been one of the most expensive places to stay on campus. Food there was expensive, but everything was quality. Only the privileged and the rich stayed there. Now, he wasn't even the privileged or the rich, Lut acknowledged, scratching his neck, he indirectly owned the elites lodge. How fast one’s life could change.“You'll need to come out, Lut. I've wanted to show this to you for a while now. This building belongs to you, even though it's not in your name at the moment. It's all yours, you know this. And also,at some point, you'll need to finish your education…”“I can always pick another school, dad. I'm sick of this place.”His father patted his knee again.“I know exactly how you feel. And if you don't feel comfortable coming out of the car, then you can stay inside. I'll go in, look at a few things, and we'll be out in a jiffy.”His father left the car, closing the door softly.Watching his father go, Lut knew he couldn't stay in the car. He swallowed hard, open

“Good morning sir.” Hubert, his driver, greeted him with enthusiasm. He looked as if he had been waiting for him all the while. The car key was already in the ignition, and the man looked ready to peel the car into the road and begin driving at a speed that pleased him, which was Hubert's customary way of driving.Lutenant didn't care much about the way he was going to reach work that day. He preferred Hubert driving him because no matter how fast he drove, he was able to slow down before the police noticed that he was going past the speed limit. It was a fun thing to do.Hopefully, he never got caught because Lut knew how difficult it was getting the police to believe that he hadn't intended to drive past the speed limit.A few minutes later, he was out of the car as it had stopped in the garage of the consortium. Leaving the car, he made his way into the elevator, which took him directly to his office. As soon as he opened the door, he was hit by the strong scent of Aurora's perfum

  • A befitting welcome

Before Aurora got to work that morning, she was surprised to see the door open a few minutes after she had sent her best friend the text regarding her moving from the hotel back to the house.“Natalie? I didn't expect you so soon.”Her best friend looked as though life with Carl had its perks. She had a bag of groceries from the popular Macmillan store in one hand, and in another was a box of pizza.“I decided to jump in, arrange my things. I'll be going back to Carl's this evening. Did I tell you he is planning to get a place so that we can start life afresh? He's also planning something huge for my birthday. I don't know what it is yet, but I know that he has something planned.”Aurora didn't comment, knowing how difficult her best friend could be most times. Natalie and misinterpretations were a normal occurrence. The last thing she wanted was her best friend quarreling with her over something that was irrelevant.Such as Carl and his inability to stick to one relationship.“Well,

Where is he?”“There! There!”Richard was fast. He had run a lot back in highschool, and he hadn't forgotten how easy it was to forget everything and let his body glide. • Midnight rescue

Richard didn't know how to start. He didn't have an invite, he didn't know the owner of the party, and he was only there because he wanted to get his girlfriend, who he was certain was already drunk and take her home. The first man stared at him in irritation, his eyebrow arched.“I'm guessing you didn't hear me earlier, mister. If you don't have an invite, I'm afraid you can't come to the party.”Richard didn't know what to do, so he did the first thing that came to his mind. He pushed the first guard, the frown on his face huge, and began to make his way into the warehouse. The other man stopped him, pushing him backwards.“Are you out of your mind? I'm certain you don't want to get shot at, mister. And the only way to do that is to pick your sorry self and leave this place this instant.”Richard squared up, refusing to admit defeat.“Look, there's someone I need to see there immediately, and if she doesn't come out this minute, her life will be in danger.”The first guard scoffed.

  • Party’s over

Tapping the table, he grinned at her.“Well, you've got that right. My father talked to me earlier today, and he maintained that he needed my answer considering the list of companies he had given me to look into.”He watched Aurora nod, seemingly interested.“Well, he said Johnson fabrics and co is trying to sell. From my findings, the company is going for five hundred million dollars, and while that's too much, I can see the advantages of the buy. The forecast considering the lifespan of the business isn't good, but with enough work and effort, I believe we can turn it around.”She shrugged, her beer in one hand, one leg crossed over the other. She looked like something out of a picture, as though she wasn't real, but a model in far away Europe.“Well, you sound as if you've already made your choice, Lut.”He rolled his eyes, sipping the vodka slowly now. The vodka was starting to get to him, the bitterness and the tipsy feeling that was settling like a blanket. If he was going to be

  • Beyond the boardroom

“Well, that brings our outing today to an end. Mr Cleveland is caught up in traffic and sadly won't be able to make it. We'll have to push the meeting to tomorrow.”Richard barely heard a word of what Mr Johnson had said. His mind was focused solely on Ariel, and the fact that she had just ended the call on him without even waiting to hear him out.“Richard?”“Yes sir, I understand. And I've heard you.”“That's besides the point. Will you be available tomorrow? I have a strong feeling that Mr Cleveland is going to be our buyer. Are you busy tomorrow? Classes or anything of that nature?”Richard shook his head in reply. He had a bunch of classes the next day, but he wasn't going to go. First things first, he had to stop joking with the woman who also served as his next source of livelihood. If there was anything he had to do at that moment,it was to make sure that Ariel was okay, and that she wasn't seeing someone else.Seeing someone else would serve as the fatal blow. It would eventu

They're starting to lay off the older workers, and I was sorting the good applications and tossing the rest. It's tough work.”She grinned at him.“Well, I'm proud of you. That shows you're not the lazy brat I always thought you to be.”He laughed, and tapping his steering wheel with his thumb, he began to speak again, eyes on the road.“Guess what? Dylan's elder brother has been arrested. He was on his way out of the state when he was caught by police officers. It's not looking too good for them now. With the phone evidence, the attack on you and the hired killers arrested, they've made this an easy case for us without even knowing it.”She nodded, not knowing exactly how to feel.Sometimes, she felt happy because she was certain that she wasn't the only woman who had gone through harassment in that office, but she was also afraid because she didn't want all the unnecessary attention and publicity on her once quiet life.“Well, you'll have to appear in court by next week, Aurora. “The meeting was brief. How are you, Edward?”“Good, sir. I'm good. I came to inform Lut here of the lapses in the recruitment department. We're letting a few older workers go, so there must be someone going through those applications on a daily basis. Aurora is still in her recovery phase, so Lut here said he's working in her place, and when she comes back, she'll owe him hours.”Mr James nodded before sitting.“That's good. Excellent work from you both. I've been trying to call you, Lut. The police have just arrested Dylan Rick's older brother. He was on his way to Seattle, but they managed to apprehend him before he got on the plane.”Lutenant smiled in spite of himself. It was good news. Each and everybody that was involved in making Aurora's life a living hell deserved what was coming to them.“However, the company's legal team is working on releasing them on bail, and the case begins next week. I'll have to cancel all my meetings, because I want to be there to see them go down. T
