As Lutenant left the house that he had come to call his own that morning, he felt overwhelmed by how fast things were moving for him.

Last night after showing him the house, his father had handed him a car key, the keys jingling in his hand as he transferred the ownership of the Range Rover that had transported them to the house to him.

He could barely find the words to thank his father after that.

“This is too much..dad.”

His father had smiled after he said that, the skin around his eyes crinkling as he did so.

“It's not too much, Lut. For the past few years of your life, you've been battered by life, friends and even your peers. I've watched from the background, and to tell you the truth, you deserve everything that is happening to you now. Even more.”

A few minutes later after his father left in an Uber, he stared at the house for close to five minutes, unable to move, unable to do anything at all.

A few days ago, he had been ridiculed by the woman he loved most, her new found bo

“It looks highly promising, sir. Despite the fact that there is risk involved, the output at the end can erase any loss incurred from the risks.”Lutenant was impressed. It was exactly what he had thought about the project, but hearing it come from Aurora seemed to give him the confidence he needed to take the challenge head on.She was good, he had to admit.“That project was brought to me by director Edward yesterday, Aurora. And I consented to taking charge of it.”Aurora's eyebrow arched in surprise, and Lut knew why.He had only come to the company a few days ago, and he was already handling something so fragile. It was rare, but at the same time, it said a lot about the extent of his ability to adapt quickly.“The reason I arranged this meeting is because I was asked to choose my team, and you were the first person that came to mind. If I'm going to be in charge of this project, I want you to be my assistant.”Her eyebrows arched even higher, but Lut continued speaking without w

“You know that if this works out, your father will have a list of companies waiting for you to control, right?”They were on the road, in the company car, but this time around, it wasn't driven by Hubert. The driver was a stone faced bald man, whose nostrils seemed to flare anytime the car gathered speed.Lutenant shook his head in the negative, telling director Edward that he had never thought about it before.“I've never thought about it that way. I just saw this as a challenge, and wanted to see what I could do. I never knew that this is a stepping stone to another job?”“It's more than a stepping stone, Lut. With this project, you're going to go places that you've never dreamt of. I trust you. Selecting aurora made me know that you know what you're doing.”Lut shrugged before speaking.“Well, she was the first person that came to mind. I was extremely impressed by the way she carried herself the day we met. I couldn't resist the thought of having someone like that on my team.”A f

“You can't sell the place, Mr Edward. She doesn't love it.”“Who doesn't love it?” Lut asked, an eyebrow raised.“Mrs Claire, the owner. She has always wanted to go into fashion. I guess that's why she's selling it. But what about us? We love our jobs, Mr Edward. This place, it's like home to us. We live our entire lives here. Déjà vu is our home!”It was just a few words, but Lut could sense the pain and the venom in them. The manager loved the company, that was quite obvious.Edward nodded, composed and cool as ever. Even though Lut knew that in the hierarchy of the company he was practically a bigger figure than Edward was, he looked up to him.Not as a role model, but as one who knew what he was doing, the right steps to take, alongside years of experience. He wanted to watch how he was going to handle the existing problem.“First of all, Gus, I want to say I understand you perfectly. Sometimes, a business might be dear to one's heart. And from the atmosphere here, I can see you'

“Good evening, sir.”After the visit to Déjà Vu, Lut and director Edward had sat down to taste if the chicken and chips prepared by the fast food was reminiscent of the name.Indeed, it was.The chicken was well prepared, and so were the chips. He wanted to taste other meals as well, but director Edward had whispered into his ears along the line that he had a meeting in a few hours. And they had left the fast food that they came to buy without making enemies, but making a friend instead. From Déjà vu, they had returned to the consortium.Lut wanted some time alone, to look over the files, to think about his plans towards the taking over of the fast food he had just visited, and how he was going to perfect the improvement and the upgrading of the place. That was until Aurora had popped out of nowhere, her brilliant smile and her polite tone making him pause whatever thinking he was doing.“Aurora. Good to see you. I was about to call you. How are you? How did the meeting go?”Aurora's

“We're going out tonight, we need to celebrate.”Aurora dropped the keys to her mother's old sedan on the table, then stared quizzically at her best friend who was the only soul in the entire city who had a spare key to her apartment and could slip into it when she wasn't around.“Celebrate? What for? And you should learn to call before breaking and entering, Natalie. You don't live here.”Natalie's smile was dazzling. She was the exact opposite of Aurora. Where Aurora was an organized workaholic who believed that everything had a process, and a queue couldn't be skipped, her best friend was way different.A graduate from the department of journalism in the university of Wisconsin, Natalie had probably dumped her degree after getting it because Aurora had never seen or heard of her best friend getting or maintaining a job.If Natalie wasn't on vacation, she was on a boat somewhere, in the arms of an older man or a new lover. She was promiscuous, and even though that wasn't Aurora's id

“How was Déjà vu?”Lutenant was surprised. Even after everyone had left the company, he had stayed back to go make concrete plans considering the fast food. He was going to do everything within his power to make sure that it was going to stand out—it was his work after all, and if it indeed succeeded, that was going to be one added to his resume. After he had finished working, he took the elevator downstairs. He hadn't been expecting his father at all, and when he saw the smiling face of Mr James in a suit that smelt and spoke of luxury, he broke into a smile that was mixed with confusion and surprise.“Dad. I never expected to see you here. Last I heard, you weren't in the state. Are you back now? For good?”His father shook his head, smiling.“You never can tell, son. The life of a businessman is never static. When you want to rule the world, you definitely can't do it by staying in a single place.” His father paused, then gestured to his driver, who was dressed in the same uniform

The table they had chosen overlooked the bridge and river in the city. It was a nice view at night, the street lights lighting up the entire bridge and making it look like a stairway to heaven—everything on it looked so bright.“Good evening gentlemen and welcome to hotel de la grande. The menus.”The menus were already on the table, but the young man who seemed to take great pride in his mustache to the point that he hadn't trimmed it off even though it was overgrown, still came to the table and handed it over to them.“I'll take the Seared Scallops “Au Gratin”.”Everything sounded strange to Lutenant, who looked at his menu over and over again, confused and not having the slightest idea of what to order.“Lut? The lad is here to take out orders.” His father reminded him, tapping the table impatiently.Giving up, Lut dropped the menu.“I'll take whatever he has chosen, thank you.”“I can see your dilemma,” his father began after the waiter left the table, “you'll get used to it, soon

“What's it going to take to pull down this place, Aurora?”Aurora swallowed hard. They were at the site of the fast food, and all she had wanted to do was look around, take a few notes, and then go back home where she was going to spend the rest of her day waiting for her best friend to come back from the previous day's escapade. But it seemed as though Lutenant, her boss, had other plans. All he had done was ask her questions again and again, and she didn't know how badly she was doing. Was she answering the questions correctly? Was she answering wrongly? She couldn't tell because with every answer, he kept his face straight, and then nodded.“Roughly twenty grand, sir. Actually, it depends. If we pull down everything, we stand a chance of losing the customers which have made the place what it is today. So, I'd say we do a redesign. Clean up the exterior, touch the interior, nothing that can take more than a month.”She watched Lut nod again, then stare at her.“That's right. Thing i

“These men you see here, they're looking for more of your kind. Good, loyal, strong and confident. And above all, young. They want your kind. They know that with you, there is reward, and that the risk of being unfortunate and losing money is less.”Lut nodded, listening attentively. He had never heard his father speak so strongly before. He meant every word he said.“I just want to remind you that no matter the offers you receive, you want to remember that you still work for me. I am not entrapping you, but I want you to use your eyes and use your head. Work smart, don't work hard.”Two men came forward, and the conversation was suddenly cut short. And even though it was short, Lutenant remembered every bit of it.His father was a very busy man, and he needed every piece of advice and information he could get patterning to the business world.“Franklin Valley, this is my son, Lutenant James. • Courage in the crucible

The Déjà vu parking lot was filled to the brim. It was kind of a food tasting party organized by Lutenant, but the idea had been his father's.It was a beautiful way to announce to the entire city that the place was officially open, the new owners had come to stay, and that the best chicken and fries combo had just gone through an upgrade. The building, just like any new project, had a tape around it that was going to be cut to signify the new ownership, and the staff had already prepared in earnest, making sure that everything was available before hand, and that the place was clean, shiny and soft music was playing in the background.Lut stared at Aurora, who looked slightly overwhelmed and out of place. He understood how she felt.A single mistake and all their hard work would go down the drain. He didn't want that. And he had made sure that it wouldn't happen by staying up all night, watching the place, ensuring that Gus and his workers did everything necessary to make sure that eve

“Well, good work in general. I love your idea and your initiative. But here's the thing, don't get too carried away. This is a project that is meant to test you. It isn't your place, at least, not yet.” Lut nodded, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. What a man. He never seemed to lack criticism. “Yes sir. I'll take note of that.” When he entered his car and drove off, Lutenant nearly shook his fist at his departing car. At the same moment, he saw Aurora's old model Benz enter the premises, she parked and got out of the car as quickly as possible, a briefcase in her hand. Black hair, black suit and a wristwatch that seemed to compliment her dressing as the icing on the cake, she looked splendid. She was the perfect representative. “Good morning sir. This is me hoping that I'm not too late. You're not supposed to be here until eight, but this is just thirty minutes past seven.” Lutenant smiled

“You can have your house to yourself, Aurora. At least you've let me know that you're not the kind of friend I always thought you were.” That was Aurora's breaking point. For a while now, she had struggled to put up with her best friend's lifestyle. To hear her make it all about herself was painful. How could she do that? Aurora stood up from where she had been sitting, unable to take it in anymore. “You've got to be kidding me, Natalie. You come into my home, make me uncomfortable, and I don't have the right to complain? That's one of the most sick things I've ever heard, and I can't even believe it's coming from you. Please leave if you're going to.” Natalie, who had expected that, began to pack her bags. At that moment, she didn't care anymore. He turned from the window, allowing his thoughts to be overshadowed by the beautiful body underneath the robe that his fiancé was wearing. He was going to get to Lutenant later. * “How far have you gone with the project, Lut?” It was his father. They were having dinner with director Edward in attendance, and he had come with his first and only child, Edward junior, who was a carbon copy of him. The same glassy eyes, an intense stare and the nose that seemed European. “Well, so far, everything is going well. Hopefully, nothing goes wrong. I can't wait to open up the new doors of that fast food. With the company's contacts, we are going to get more customers.” He watched his father nod. “I have a different vision for déjà vu, father. A place where the middle class and the elites can mingle. A place where two classes can afford to eat without feeling the pressure. It's not going to be easy, but one thing I'

Aurora looked at the document, her hands trembling slightly. She couldn't believe it. It was the document legalising the renovation of Déjà vu, and also commending her for the good work that she had done so far. She stared at it, not knowing what to do with it, then smiled at him. “That is our grand prize, Aurora. And it's just the beginning. By the time we're done with the Déjà vu project, customers will be coming in dozens. I honestly can't wait.” Aurora nodded, touched by his words. When he had told her to follow him, she had been afraid that she had done something wrong. But now, she was happier than ever. To her, the opportunities were endless. If she succeeded in impressing the CEO and Lutenant as well, there were going to be a lot of referrals and a lot of jobs coming her way. She had been promised that by her boss himself. “The most important thing, sir, is keeping the people working with us happy. We've done that. We can only

“And you're talking about jewels? You've got to be kidding me.”At that moment, Ariel stopped touching it, her mind reeling. Before then, she was thinking of calling Lut and thanking him, but Richard's words had sown that seed of doubt that had been lingering in her mind for a while now.“How did you receive it?”“Seraphina said a delivery man brought it to the house while we were with the horses.”Richard's laughter was condescending.“And you believe that? You actually believe that Lut, who can't even get himself good clothes can buy jewelleries from where…Tommy's… for you?”At that moment, the necklace on Ariel's neck felt like heavy lead. She wanted to get it off by all means.“Well, if Lut didn't send it, then who did?”And it was when she saw Richard's knowing smile that she shrieked in happiness.“Richard? Don't tell me you bought this.”Richard smiled, his eyes lightning up immediately.“And don't tell me that you fell for my little prank. How in heaven's name did you even beli

  • The surprise package

As soon as she came down from Midnight's back, Ariel found her way back to the main house. While Richard stayed back to ride a little before putting the horses back into the stable, she decided to go for a drink and some snacks. As she made her way back to the house, she smiled, thinking about the few minutes she had just spent with her just engaged lover. She could see why he wanted them to marry so quickly. .He loved her, and they couldn't do without each other. As she got closer to the house, she squealed in surprise and pure happiness when she saw that the power supply had been turned back on.Seraphina, who was standing next to the door, held out a towel, ready to help her mistress out with the beads of perspiration that had gathered on her brow and her forehead.“Thank you, Seraphina.”Seraphina bowed, her rosy cheeks lighting up.“Did the electricity company come?”“Yes madam, they did. They left the bill on the kitchen table.”Accepting the towel, she mopped her face gingerly

  • Turbulent times

Armed with the band that clipped her hair in place, the riding boots, and then the trousers, Ariel could tell that she looked funny. But she liked it because Richard liked it as well.“Which horse are we riding today, my love? You get to choose.”Ariel smiled. She knew some of the horses by names, and had forgotten some. As a child, she was fascinated by horses, and had a pony for her Thirteenth birthday. Now, she was fascinated by fast cars and beautiful dresses, how fast she had changed over the years. She glanced at one of the older horses, and through it's gentle nature and the black star on her forehead, she recognized Midnight, one of the horses she had always loved as a child.“Let's use Midnight. I don't know if she can remember me now, but we used to love each other when I was a kid.”Nodding, Richard went to work. Patting the horse, he gently guided it out, and Ariel was slightly impressed. Back in the university, he had a thing for horses, and had always visited the barns i
