Chapter 2

Ethan made his way to the kitchen with a sense of urgency and promptly began to wash the dishes. He then proceeded to prepare a delectable meal for dinner and served it in the dining room before setting the table. Upon entering the living area, he met Elena, Stella, and Tiana, Raven's sister, sitting carelessly. Ethan attempted to join them but was stopped by Elena's dismissive gesture.

Elena asked, "What are you doing?"

"I was hoping to sit down," replied Ethan, determined to take a seat.

"Have you no shame? You are nothing more than a worthless individual in this household. Even our dog holds more significance than you. The sooner you realize this, the better off you'll be. Now return to your laundry duties," Tiana scolded.

Ethan was taken aback by Tiana's derogatory comment, particularly since she was his sister-in-law. Elena stood idly by, offering no defense.

Ethan realized that his presence was no longer welcome, but he refused to give up. He wanted to demonstrate that he was capable of achieving greatness and that he was worth more than the disparaging words that were hurled his way. He looked intently at their faces, recognizing that they had no desire for his company, and summoned the courage to speak.

"The meal is ready on the dining table," he said, before turning and walking away to commence his laundry duties.

As he worked, Ethan contemplated his unfortunate circumstances, realizing that he was currently unemployed, having lost the job that had sustained him for a significant period.

He continued with the laundry until nightfall. When he finished, he returned to the living room, where they were watching a movie.

He ignored them and entered the kitchen to fetch food for himself but found nothing in the kitchen. Either the food had run out, or they must have finished it just to make his life more miserable.

He returned to them in the living room, feeling annoyed. Preparing food and later finding nothing was the least they could have done to consider him.

"Excuse me, do you know where the food might be?" Ethan asked, trying not to show how mad he was.

"A safer place?" Elena's, his mother-in-law asked. "Since your miserable self entered this house, have you ever seen the food kept in the safer place you're talking about?"

"If that annoyed you, I apologize," Ethan pleaded.

"This isn't a matter of begging," Elena added.

"Since you didn't put it in a safer place, can you please tell me where you kept it?" Ethan asked.

Ethan remained standing in front of them like a nobody. As they all burst into laughter.

"Don't you understand what my mother just said? There's no food for lazy people! Someone who doesn't work isn't supposed to eat," Elena replied, with a look that suggested she didn't care what happened.

"You are still living in our house, this isn't your poor father's house" Tiana added, further exacerbating the situation.

Ethan felt a surge of anger and frustration wash over him, but he tried his best to remain calm. He knew that arguing with them would only worsen the situation. Instead, he decided to leave the room and think of a way to improve his circumstances.

As he walked out of the living room, he couldn't help but feel like he was at a crossroads. He needed to find a job and become financially independent, but he also knew that the job market was tough.

That night he had nothing with him, he slept with an empty stomach.

The next morning, he woke up at 7 a.m., took his bath, and then quickly dashed out of the house. He trekked down to the cab company where he worked as a cab driver.

The shop hasn't opened yet, but he sits down outside the cab company.

He needs a job, that is all. Maybe if he could get the job then, his wife and his in-laws could have some pity on him and start giving him food.

About an hour later, the workers started resuming. None say a word to him, but seeing him there was just a laughingstock for them again.

Ethan is desperately in need of the job and nothing could make him work away.

Mr Charles finally arrived in his black SUV, though not that new but getting old.

His bouncer was after him, and Ethan kneeled in front of him as people watched what might happen.

"Please sir, I'm sorry for what happened yesterday. It was all my fault I should have picked up the fare quicker than that. I promise that won't happen again if you give me a chance to continue working here."

Ethan's eyes were etched on what he would do. Maybe slap him and asked the guards to beat the shit out of him again.

The bouncer was about to knock him down when Mr Charles raised the alarm for him to stop.

"Come with me, poor boy!" Without waiting for Ethan, Mr Charles had already entered the cab company and walked to his office.

Ethan ran after him, just to catch up with him before he could change his mind.

In the office, Mr Charles sat down while Ethan stood still in front of him.

"Do you mean it?" Mr Charles asked with no shaking glances.

"Yes sir, I promised to never be late with any fare anymore—"

Ethan stopped when Mr Charles raised his hand for him to shut the fuck up.

"Do you mean that this job depends on your life?" Mr Charles asked now.

"Yes, it depends on my life, sir," Ethan said.

Mr Charles sighed, looking Ethan in the eye. "Alright, I'll give you your job back, but with five rules. First, you must never be late with any fare. Second, you must always be polite to our customers. Third, you must wear the company uniform at all times. Fourth, you must work hard and be dedicated to your job. And fifth, you must never let personal problems affect your work."

Ethan nodded eagerly, relieved to have his job back. "I understand, sir," he replied.

"Good. Now get out there and start picking up those fares," Mr Charles said, handing Ethan his first fare order.

Ethan took the order and rushed out of the office, grateful for the second chance he had been given. He knew he had a lot to prove, but he was determined to work hard and follow Mr Charles' rules.

At least it was a thing of joy for him to get back the peanut rather than him getting nothing.

Getting to the lady he was supposed to pick the cab key from.

"What?" The lady growled.

"Bitch, I got my job back." Ethan grabbed the key and then walked out of the cab company. Checking the order, he finds the name.

The name — is Charleston Jim, one of the business tycoons who hated the sight of him.
