5 James' Evaluation

The evaluation room was a square-shaped room with white walls and a tinted screen that covered a large portion of one part of the wall. The room was empty except for the small objects that lay in the center of the room.

James suspected that they were kept there in case people with inoffensive systems had to demonstrate their powers.

"SUBJECT 40 STATE YOUR NAME!" The P.A. bellowed out to him and he grimaced softly, whoever was dishing out these orders was probably behind that screen.

''Why will I have to state my name?'' James groaned with a roll of his eyeballs, ''you called me here by my name."

"DON'T MAKE THIS ANY MORE DIFFICULT THAN IT HAS TO BE. STATE YOUR NAME." The voice came again, it sounded annoyed and James couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement at it.

"My name is James Jade." James drawled,

"JAMES JADE, OPEN YOUR SYSTEM AND TELL US YOUR TITLE."

'My title?' James thought. He quickly remembered that his system had blocked his title so he didn't know what it was.

"I'm sorry but I don't have a title," James replied and cocked his head to the side.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN? EVERY SUBJECT HAS A TITLE, CHECK AGAIN."

James narrowed his eyes at the degrading tag that the voice used. 'I'm a human... Not a subject.'

"There's no point in telling me to check again. You know better than anyone that I'm staring at my system screen right now and I know what I'm saying, I don't have a title." James emphasized,

[Invasion failed!]

'What's this? Are they trying to hack my system and confirm for themselves?' James was almost at the point of laughter, 'I wonder how they'll feel now knowing that their creation is beyond their control.'

"UM... I THINK THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH YOUR SYSTEM." The voice now sounded uncertain, a massive change from its infallible tone earlier.

"I'm sure that there's nothing wrong with my system," James replied calmly,

"YOU WOULDN'T KNOW. WHAT'S YOUR POWER?"

James didn't trust these people. Even though they gave him this system gift, he knew that they wouldn't stop at anything to destroy whatever didn't go their way so he decided to show them only one of his powers. This would also be a good chance to test out his powers for the first time.

He lifted his hand and imagined the object on the table floating, surprisingly, as if it was magic, the object began to float in the air. James was excited! 'This is real!'

"HMM... TELEKINESIS, INTERESTING. HOW POWERFUL IS IT?"

"Hmmm.." James hummed, "Well, just this."

"OKAY... I THINK THAT'S ENOUGH FOR NOW. GO BACK AND JOIN YOUR MATES IN THE ASSEMBLY HALL."

"Okay!" James turned with a sardonic smirk on his face and walked out of the room.

When James got back to the assembly room, he was surprised to see most of the men gathered around an elevated platform.

'What the hell is happening here?' James thought as he observed the scene before him with attention. He realized that the men had gathered around and organized fighting duels.

James could only think of two reasons why they would do that;

One; to test their new skills and abilities and two; to establish the natural hierarchy of superiority amongst men. A pecking order.

Two men were on the platform, one was a blonde-haired man who stood at around 6 feet and the other was a red-haired man who was kneeling on the floor with burns all over his body.

The blonde-haired man was smiling maniacally at him while swirling little balls of flames on his hand. James wondered what could make a man as good-looking as that end up in prison that led him here.

"Ready to give up now?" The blonde asked while smiling,

"Y..yes yes, I give up." The red-haired man said and slumped to the ground.

"I present to you, our champion, defending the title for the last three consecutive matches..." Another man with spiky black hair and large eyes rushed onto the stage and raised the blonde's hand. "Byron!!!"

The men burst into hails and shouts as Byron climbed down the platform for two other men to start another fight.

James wasn't interested in the two men that had taken the stage, what he was interested in was the power of the blonde man that had just stepped down. If he wasn't mistaken, that was exactly the skill he needed to acquire to complete his quest.

'Show me Byron's status.' James looked at Byron intently and willed his system to show him Byron's status.

Before he could process the entire information, his legs were already moving toward Byron and his clique.

"Mr Byron! Mr Byron!" James found himself saying as he walked confidently towards the group.

In seconds, James was surrounded by the members of Byron's clique.

"What do you want with our boss?"

"Who the fuck is this?"

"Fuck off, what do you want?!"

"Pest!!"

They all said as they collectively pushed James away.

"Chill! Chill!" James said to them with his hands up in a show of peace.

"What do you want here?" One of them who had a large stature grabbed James by the collar and lifted him, "You wanna duel with our boss?"

"No no no," James waved his hands to emphasize his denial, "I want nothing of that sort. I just want a handshake from him– he's my idol."

"A handshake?" The man smirked comically and dropped him roughly, "Stupid, get out of here."

"But..but he's my idol," James said, feigning desperation.

"Wait a minute, you're the one who got his head smashed to the ground earlier right?" The man pointed his large finger at James' nose. "One more word from you and I'll kick you halfway across this room."

James dropped the desperate look and a frown made its way to his face. Throughout his life, he had been maltreated, cheated on, and discriminated against but now, he had the power to defend himself. He wouldn't sit down and allow a paranoid yes-man to order him around.
