In the dark space, Bastian sat cross legged, observing the white haired boy on the other side of the transparent barrier. A look of contemplation was on his face, as he struggled internally with what to do next.
*Buzz*
Then suddenly a loud buzzing noise, like a swarm of bees, entered Bastian's ears.
Sigh, here it comes again.
In preparation for what was about to come, Bastian sat upright and backed away from the barrier.
Although the Soul Force membrane could not get past the barrier, it could at least illuminate the surrounding area, showing what was happening on the other side.
The white haired boy got up the moment he heard the buzzing, then, in frenzy, he backed himself into the barrier, completely ignoring Bastian's presence.
The source of the buzzing was directly where the white haired boy was looking at. The white haired boy screamed, as if he was suffering excruciating agony. The louder the buzzing sound became, the closer the source of the sound was.
At some point, the source of the buzzing noise came into the area illuminated by Bastian's Soul Force membrane.
It was what looked like a group of ghost like translucent creatures covered in black cloth from top to bottom. The creatures had no legs and merely floated above ground. They only had two holes in the cloth for eerie red eyes and their hands were like the hands of a corpse that had been void of life for years.
Bastian had seen these ghost like creatures come time and time again, while he was in this place. He had been in his Soul Site for quite some time and had observed the same even occur over, and over again.
The ghosts like creatures would come at set intervals, and they would all rush at the white haired boy. Entering his body and causing some sort of harm, or at least Bastian assumed they were harming him, because every time the creatures entered the white haired boy's body, his screams would become louder and more intense.
These creatures were quite fast, and the haired boy had no way to defend himself against them.
At times like this, Bastian could only watch. He had looked through all of the knowledge on souls he had been given, but none of it had any information on the creatures before him.
Bastian had tried to break the barrier with his Soul Force countless times, but to no avail. The barrier itself was like an unmovable boulder, and Bastian's Soul Force was like a twig. This sensation felt similar to the restraint put on his Soul Force by the enchanted shackles. This was an unpleasant feeling but it gave Bastian an idea.
Bastian did not enjoy watching the boy suffer, but unfortunately there was nothing he could do at the moment.
Bastian did indeed have a plan, but for now he could only do two things, the first was observe, as a former scientist on earth, Bastian knew the value of observation.
The second thing Bastian was doing was manipulating his Soul Force. At first it was just a bubble, but at that moment, after what felt like hours, Bastian could manipulate it to take on different shapes and sizes.
Whilst the creatures were not there, Bastian would manipulate his Soul Force. At first, he tried to do simple things, like expanding and retracting it. Bastian discovered that the larger he made the Soul Force bubble, the weaker it became at one particular area, showing that it was being spread thin.
Bastian could somewhat feel the Soul Force, as it was a part of himself.
The larger the bubble was, the dimmer the light became but in return, a larger area would be illuminated.
After expanding and retracting, Bastian tried to change the shape of the bubble, from spherical to cuboid to a pyramid. After a bit of practice this became much easier.
The next step of Bastian's practice was to only concentrate on a specified area of the bubble, whilst the rest of it remained stationary. This was a bit tricky but it did not take too long for him to master.
The next part however was much harder. The next part of Bastian's training, was to change the shape of the bubble in two or more areas at the same time. This was quite difficult; it was similar to trying to draw a circle with one hand and a square with the other, at the same time.
It required a high level of ambidexterity and concentration. In the Soul Site, there was no sense of hunger or sleepiness. Thus, Bastian worked tirelessly to improve his control over his Soul Force.
After a while, Bastian finally achieved the control he had wanted to achieve. He shrunk the bubble to a suitable size, the he created hundreds or needle like partitions on the surface of it. These needles were quite sharp, and rotated ceaselessly. This was the idea that Bastian wanted.
The energy that was in the white haired boy, which had penetrated his body during their bout in the arena and had allowed Bastian to channel his Soul Force into the white haired boy, even though he was wearing enchanted shackles, was also needle like in shape.
Whenever Bastian tried to go past the barrier, he would not be able to do anything and his Soul Force would feel restrained. So, Bastian surmised that perhaps the needle like energy was able to bypass the shackles due to its properties in terms of shape.
Although Bastian had realized that this was a bit of a long shot, he did at that moment, have quite a bit of understanding toward magic involving the soul. And he was confident in his hypothesis.
Armed with hundreds of needles made form Soul Force, Bastian attacked the barrier. All the needles focused on a particular area of the barrier.
A grinding noise echoed throughout the area. This time Bastian felt much less resistance. Not only were the needles rotating, they were also vibrating, adding to their penetrative power.
Bastian could feel the barrier breaking away, with the resistance becoming weaker and weaker where he was attacking it, and after some time, he finally broke through. With a plop, the entire barrier from top to bottom disappeared, like it was made of nothing.
The real issue starts now.
Bastian was happy that his plan had succeeded, but there were too many unknown factors.
From what Bastian knew, in a normal Soul Brethren ritual, the barrier and the creatures were not supposed to be there. Bastian had assumed that the barrier had existed because the ritual was initiated without the other party's consent.
But even so, it should not have been this easy to break.
Unfortunately, what Bastian did not know was that the barrier depended on the mental state of the party who put it up. It was somewhat similar to a subconscious action. The white haired boy was constantly under attack from the creatures, thus the mental barrier he had was rather weak.
Bastian walked straight to the white haired boy, in an attempt to communicate with him.
Whenever the creatures were not there, the white haired boy would merely lie on the ground. He would only get up once he sensed the buzzing. Bastian was curious to see what would happen if he approached the white haired boy.
In theory, the two souls involved in the ritual would have to brand each other with the Soul Force of the other person involved.
Bastian could easily brand the boy if he wanted to but he was not sure if the boy would accept the brand and be willing to brand Bastian as well.
Well, here goes nothing. Please don't resist.
Bastian approached the white haired boy's body slowly, in order to avoid spooking the boy.
What a dim light.
The light surrounding the white haired boy was quite dim, showing that his soul was in a weak state.
Can he even survive the process?
Whilst Bastian was contemplating his next course of action, the worst possible scenario occurred.
*Buzz*
The ghost like creatures had arrived!
Shit! The creatures are here!Indeed. The dreadful ghost like creatures had returned for another round of their attacks on the white haired boy. Except this time, the white haired boy was not alone, Bastian was with him.Bastian had been thinking about quite a few things while practicing with his Soul Force. For example, would he be able to fend off the creatures? Would they even attack him? Would they show up if the barrier was brought down?At this point, Bastian was a few meters away from the white haired boy and he chose to remain there. The intimidating appearance of the creatures was a bit too stimulating for the scholar.OK. This is scary.Looking from the barrier, had given Bastian a sense of security. So even though he was intimidated by the creatures, he was still able to stand being close to them. But at that moment, the barrier had disappeared.Bastian tried to soothe himself using logic.I destroyed the barrier, and the creatures couldn't pass the barrier. So logically sp
The movement was so quick Bastian barely had any time to react.Whoa! So fast! How did he do that?"Answer me, or die!" said the boy. He even pressed the edge of the sword even more on Bastian's throat, in an attempt to further intimidate Bastian.I am afraid of ghosts, but little boys are a different story."Wait I can explain. Just promise me you will let me explain." The boy nodded his head, and gestured with his chin for Bastian to continue.Bastian then started narrating the entire story, from the arena to their current situation. Throughout the entire explanation, the boy eyed him like a hawk. Bastian was rather calm and explained in a fluid and relaxed manner. From time to time, the boy would ask a few questions, and Bastian would answer, until Bastian reached the part where he said that he had launched a Soul Brethren contact in order to save the boy.The boy was shocked, which momentarily caused him to let down his guard.Chance! The entire time, Bastian had been lowering a s
The boy did not answer Bastian's question, he only remained silent but there was a tinge of sadness in his eyes. Bastian could tell that this was a somewhat sensitive subject, so he decided to move straight to the point."Point is, if you want to survive, then we have to make this contract now. I'm pretty sure you have no other option."Bastian released the boy from his prison as a show of good faith but he was still weary of the boy. His quick movement before had been far too surprising. Bastian was still trying to figure out how he did that. They are in soul form, so Martial Techniques should not be usable here. The quick movement that the boy had done before definitely appeared to be a Martial Technique but according to Bastian's knowledge, that should be impossible."Why are you helping me?" said the boy.Bastian had been stuck in his own train of thought, so this question caught him off guard."Hhmm? Oh. You said it yourself. I subconsciously seek balance because of my bloodline.
Things worse than death? Kenshin found that statement rather ridiculous. Although the poison had been torturing him for a long time, he barely had any memories of the experience, all he remembered were the feelings he felt, despair, anger, sadness and fear. Especially fear. What he was afraid of, he was not sure of but Kenshin was confident that his entire being had been filled with an intense feeling of dread, throughout the entire experience. Even at this moment, the feeling of dread was still gnawing at him but his soul had become somewhat accustomed to it, so he did not mind.No one knows what it's like to experience torture as much as I have, yet he dares say that he has experienced something worse than death? Preposterous!"Alright then, you may brand me. Oh, if you are going to include memories, best include ones with skills and knowledge as well. Another advantage of this ritual is that it allows us to exchange knowledge and experience. So if you have any useful knowledge and
Kenshin was flustered with rage, but more than answers, he wanted revenge. The amount of information that had entered him mind had brought him to the brink of insanity, and he could barely understand any of it. Thus Kenshin decided to turn the tables. He opened up his palms and congealed two katanas with his Soul Force.Using his Soul Force, Kenshin made the swords join to form a sort of coat of arms. That was going to be his brand. Without saying anything, Kenshin made the brand approach Bastian's chest. Bastian did not resist and merely braced his mind for what might come. Bastian's greatest fear was that Kenshin would throw in as much information as he did.Even though it was unlikely, it was still a possibility that made Bastian very uncomfortable. Bastian was not a coward by nature but he was not a fearless man either. After seeing what Kenshin had gone through, his mind was placed in a prison of paranoia.Bastian closed his eyes when he saw the brand enter his chest. He tried to
The way Bastian understood it; martial arts in this world were extremely advanced, to the point where they involved mastering universal laws. The Dao of the Sword was no different; it was a very profound Dao, one that could not be underestimated.A Dao was a path to understanding the laws of the universe. There were three Supreme Dao upon which the universe was based upon. The Dao of Space, the Dao of Taiji and the Dao of Spirit., each of these were pillars of which this universe stood and were further divided into many other Dao.The Dao of Space for example, was further divided into subsections like the Dao of the Five Elements and the Dao of Time. The Dao of the Taiji was divided into the Dao of Yin and the Dao of Yang. The Dao of the spirit is divided into the Dao of life and the Dao of death.Space, Taiji and Spirit were the Supreme Dao. The following were Celestial Dao. Below Celestial Dao were True, Greater and Lesser Dao. True Dao, Greater Dao and Lesser Dao were often compose
Inside a room, Bastian and Kenshin were seated on their beds, while Shasha and Kai were standing over their beds. The four had been conversing for quite some time before they were silent.Kai then said, "Let me get this straight. Your name is Bastian, you were a low ranking noble who was living in the Western Deserts. You got knocked out by a random cultivator and ended up in the arena without knowing how or why you got there. When you ended up seeing the blind disa-, ehem I mean Kenshin, you suddenly had the urge to assist him. Your knowledge of souls led you to conclude that becoming Soul Brethren with Kenshin would help him, thus you initiated the ritual by yourself, resulting in you temporarily alleviating Kenshin of his problem. Did I miss anything out?" said Kai."Nope, that's the story." said Bastian while nodding. An action Bastian found difficult, as he had gone quite a long time without eating, were it not for his unique physique and cultivation, he would most likely be a co
In a courtyard within the mansion, Kenshin sat in the seiza position in front of a tree. The grass and most of the greenery were wet, for the night before it had been raining. Sparkling drops of water drenched the place around Kenshin, from the grass below him to the leaves above him. Kenshin was physically blind, but he saw far more than others. Two sheathed katanas were placed on each side as Kenshin sat. He had his eyes closed and was extremely serene. Barely a single cell in his body seemed to be moving if one looked from the side. Even Kenshin's breathe was so restrained that nature would call his own very existence into question were it sentient. After spending a while in this state, he moved. He was neither fast nor slow. He did not open his eyes either. He simply unsheathed both swords and held them both in his hands. He then used one to hit a tree, using the side of the blade. This seemingly subtle and soundless action caused the tree in front of Kenshin to shake vigorously.
