There were four families who claimed Descent from Hor, each having a specific mark assigned specifically to their bloodline. After Hor passed away, four of his descendants made remarkable feats that made them earn their marks from the new Mark Giver who was a non-descendant trained by the former chief.

But by Himlo's instructions, once a mark was given to a Haran, anyone next with an achievable feat from his bloodline or family would receive the family mark of his own. The Marks given were exclusive and given to the best among a family, hence becoming a tradition.

Every year, many with or without the marks and fire ability would appear to champion for head but only those four families would be the last to stand. Even if they traced their lineage to Hor they still had to obey the rules he made.
