2. Firearm and Magic

Three years ago, Loris was hailed as the genius in the Federico Clan. He made everyone proud, especially his father, Gustavo Federico, the clan’s leader. Everyone respected the clan and praised Gustavo for having a genius son. In short, he became everyone’s favorite, always the talk of the town in a positive light.

However, due to an accident, all of that vanished. Now, he was branded by the town as the disabled son, the pitiful boy taken away from the light and pushed to some random dark corner.

Loris lay down on the bed in his room, surrounded by papers scattered everywhere. On each page, messy handwriting could be seen with one word particularly written in bold, shaky letters: useless. He had scribbled it earlier out of anger after reading those medical books for treating hand diseases, all of which proved to be useless – just like him.

Cursing under his breath, he picked up a book and threw it to the wall. But even that made him wince, his hand ended up trembling at the small movement.

He clenched his teeth in frustration.

Who cares about having magic power that surpassed everyone else when he couldn’t even carry a gun – or even a book – properly?

He wasn’t even from this world.

His original soul, having the same name Loris, came from Earth.

That’s right. In reality, he was just an ordinary man who loved to play roleplaying games or RPGs. The World of Nimgofu was one of the games he used to enjoy playing until one day, he choked while eating his ramen and died. When he woke up, he found himself in the same fantasy game he was playing at the time – the World of Nimgofu.

In the World of Nimgofu, magic firearms are the most mainstream way of practice to become the greatest. Similar to other RPGs, in this world, people distinguish the levels of gunners based on their magic power and whether they can use abilities from the lowest F level to the legendary S level.

In this world, who is strong or weak depends on two things: first, total magic power, and second, shooting talent. The total amount of magic power is the accumulation of personal practice while shooting talent refers to a person’s familiarity with firearms and the way to use shooting in combat.

The person his soul had entered was a man named Loris Federico, the 20-year-old genius son of the Federico family. In truth, Loris’s magical talent far exceeded that of others, because he once entered a new body as an adult soul. After experiencing the second development, his soul strength is almost twice that of an adult. This was reflected in his practice where he, amazingly, proves that he can absorb magic power much faster than ordinary people.

The first time Loris discovered this, he was stunned and he couldn’t help but feel excited. After all, he was just an ordinary man living on Earth but when he entered this new world, he became a genius who could do amazing things. What he didn’t expect was for it to be taken away too quickly as he, after a while of being a genius, became a waste again.

A deep, long sigh escaped his lips.

He glanced down at his hands.

In truth, both he and the original Loris were strong physically and mentally.

Even when disasters came, on the other hand, on a positive note, he was still alive.

He knew he could pass this trial, too. Soon, he would also be cured of this disease – or whatever curse this was.

In addition, there were a few people willing to help him. His father, for one, never stopped finding a cure for Loris’ hand disease. However, no matter how many doctors he went to, it was of no use. All of them couldn’t treat Loris’ hand.

It made Loris think he was unworthy to have such a father in this world.

It was obvious his father wanted him to become a great gunner yet he didn’t only fulfill that for a short time, he also humiliated him with those test results…

Just then, he heard the sound of the main door opening.

“Master, welcome back,” the servants all greeted at the main entrance while bowing down to the master of the house.

Loris glanced through his window. Sure enough, it was his father, Gustavo Federico. He kept silent and waited until his father knocked to his room.

“I heard your test results came out yesterday,” his father mentioned as he entered. “You surpassed everyone in terms of magic power.”

Loris felt complicated. He greeted his father back and soon they went in and spoke of different matters. Although their conversation was calm, he couldn’t help but feel his blood throbbing and heart wincing when he heard his father’s words – that he, Loris, was no longer a gunman.

“As the clan leader, I can’t violate the clan rules set by the Council of Elders,” he stated, trying his best not to show his disappointment. Fortunately, he managed to convince the Council of Elders and fought for the final year for Loris.

“As long as your hand recovers within this year, you can still become a gunman,” he said, hope laced in his voice while looking at his son.

Although Loris knew that his chance was slim given his hand’s current useless state, he tried to comfort his father with a simple response. “I will do my best.”

Mr. Federico nodded. He was already pleased to hear those words coming from his son. As long as he hadn’t given up entirely yet, there was still hope. “I’ve talked to a doctor from X City. He will come to help with your treatment.”

He stood up and walked to the door. Before he turned to leave, he said, “I almost forgot. Loris, I want you to prepare. Tomorrow, a distinguished guest will be visiting us.”

“A guest?” Loris asked his father, feeling curious but his father didn’t answer. It made Loris wonder who it might be.

Outside his room, he reminded Loris, “Be careful when practicing. Don’t overdo it and make sure to follow the doctor’s instructions for your treatment.”

“I understand,” Loris responded, feeling doubtful of his father’s words on getting another doctor to check his hand. For all he knew, quack doctors were everywhere in this world and medical books didn’t always prove to be hundred percent accurate or effective – at least, in his case.

Silent, he stood on the doorframe, listening to his father’s last few reminders.

Without anyone noticing, an eye slowly and gently opened on the back of his slightly trembling hand.
