Chapter 3

Standing in front of the apartment of Elisa, Alex was calm. He was going to finish everything today.

However, before he enter the building, his phone began to ring.

“My condolences, boss.” A very humble voice came from the phone.

“Thank you.” He responded and wished the statement never came. It reminded him that he was grieving and he knew that he’d drown in such statements when he eventually resumed work soon.

“I may have to inform you that someone from Milton Group called this morning.” The caller proceeded.

“They are almost bankrupt and are kind of desperate. The owner, he begged us to invest...we could use their company to carry out our plan.”

Alex asked calmly while running his hand through his hair, “What’s their total worth?”

“10 million dollars.”

“10 million dollars?” Alex frowned, “You know what William, it’s not a good idea bothering me with such small deals.”

“I’m very sorry boss.” William's voice was cautious, he continued, “But they do own a good land, which they thought was a failure investment. However, I got a secret news, the government plans to develop that district soon, we could make a big profit from it.”

“OK, then just go for it.” Alex said indifferently and hung up.

He then sighed and finally pushed the car door open. He was about to take a step toward the building when he remembered that he needed to carry something so he went back to the car, grabbed the file lying on the back seat, and aimed for the duplex.

When Alex got to the entrance, he heard squeals and chuckles emanating from the living room. His brows furrowed in annoyance when his ears picked up a familiar voice. All the voices were quite familiar but that particular male voice was one he had grown to detest.

He made his way into the living room and the first scene his eyes picked was Elisa and Mark, seated on the couch, clenching glasses of wine. They seemed absorbed in each other’s warmth. While Elisa clung to Mark’s arm, he kept stroking her back affectionately.

On the couch opposite the happy duo was Mrs. Sanders; Elisa’s mother. She quickly turned around and caught Alex standing by the door.

“You’re here?” She said, her voice sounding flat.

Alex noticed how pissed they all looked when he stepped into the room. It was as if he just ruined their happy moment.

Elisa slowly withdrew her hand from Mark and cleared her throat loudly.

Mrs. Sanders stood up and faced Alex with her arms folded across her chest. “How dare you enter our house without any permission? Elisa, I think you must take back the key from him, after all he paid nothing for this house.”

Alex sneered, he ignored Mrs. Sanders, he just walked close and brought out a file behind him and threw it on the table.

All eyes were darted toward the file.

“These are divorce papers. I signed them. It’s left for Elisa to append her signature so we can get this over with.” Alex revealed.

Elisa’s eyes widened. Mark hummed and sat up.

Mrs. Sanders broke out laughing. She turned to Alex. “You want a divorce? How much money you want from us? I’m warning you, we would not give a penny to you!” she waved her hand down.

Alex sneered, “Just read it and sign.”

“So now that your poor grandma is gone, you have no one to bankroll your broke ass and the only thing you could think of was drafting those so-called divorce papers so you could extort money from Elisa right?” Mrs. Sanders opined.

Elisa looked at Alex with guilty eyes, she said, “I’m sorry for grandmother’s death, Alex. Don’t listen to my mom, I will compensate you for grandmother’s sake...”

“I don’t need a penny from you guys.” Alex interrupted her. “The dirty money will disgust me.”

Elisa said frowning, “Don’t be childish, Alex. I know you’re sad because of everything, but at least let me compensate you.”

“Do not pretend!” Mrs. Sanders said, she collected the file from the table.

She opened the file and began to flip through the pages of the document buried inside. “I knew you weren’t good enough for my daughter anyway and now you want to rob us with these divorce papers? Elisa is not giving you any dime. I know you concocted lots of lies in this document so she could compensate you for certain damages.” She then stopped after scheming through the document.

But she was stunned after finish reading the whole agreement. “You didn’t…what trick are you playing?”

“I must ask a lawyer to check it, it can’t be...” Mrs. Sanders couldn’t believe the truth.

“I told you that I don’t want a penny from your daughter. I’m not a cheap person. All I want is Elisa’s signature.” Alex maintained.
