Chapter 33- The liar.

Noah shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his eyes flitting around the room as he tried to come up with a response.

Avery's expression hardened, her words sharpened to a fine point.

"Well?" Avery pressed, her eyes narrowed into slits as she zeroed in on Noah. "I'm waiting."

Noah's composure began to crumble like a sand castle under a rising tide, his excuses falling flat in the face of Avery's relentless questioning.

"It-it was me," he stammered, beads of sweat forming on his brow. "I paid the bill out of the goodness of my heart."

Avery's laugh was sharp, humorless. "You know, I've always admired your tenacity. It's almost endearing."

"But, Noah," Avery continued, her voice deceptively soft. "Goodness of your heart? That's a joke."

She leaned forward, her eyes flashing with malice. "Tell me the truth. You paid that bill to win favor with my family, to get closer to me. It was just another part of your scheme." Avery wanted him to agree to more lies and he foolishly fell for it.
