144 — ALEJO’S COUNCIL

The receptionist burst into laughter.

“Why do you keep embarrassing yourself, sir? There’s absolutely no way you have my boss’ personal number. Just leave.”

Alex did not move an inch. He dialled Alejo’s number and the lawyer answered on the first ring.

“Hello, sir?”

The receptionist paused, her face morphing into a frown as she listened attentively.

“Yes, I’m here, but your receptionist wouldn’t let me in.”

“Tell Susana that you’re my guest.” Alejo replied.

“I’ve already done that.” Alex said impatiently. “She wouldn’t let me through.”

Alejo heaved a sigh.

“Okay then. I’ll be there in three minutes.”

Then the call went dead.

But it only took those three minutes for everything to go south.

“What are you still doing here?” The receptionist, whose name was Susana, snarled.

“I just got off the phone with your boss. He asked me to wait for him.”

She scoffed. “No, you didn’t just get off the phone with my boss. Don’t think you can come in here and try to fool me with a fake phone call. If
