"Careful!" I heard Imelda's loud voice. My opponent lunged at me with an insane speed. I jumped aside dodging his attack then jabbed his back with the other end of my spear. He regained his stance and tried to attack me again.
"Don't just defend Nich!" Imelda's voice sounds frustrated, and I can hear it. The quickness of this person makes attacking him difficult for me. He attempted to strike my leg with his lance, but I managed to leap back. "This distance should be enough," I mumble to myself as I channeled 70% of my remaining energy into my spear. Aiming it at my opponent, who was ready to launch another strike, I swiftly let go of the spear. He attempted to suddenly change his position from offensive to defensive while concentrating on my approaching weapon.I ran after my weapon, causing him to turn to look at me briefly as he continued to ignore my spear. After disabling his defense with my weapon, I smirk. I pounced on him and kicked the hand holding his lance, which made him lose his grip. Despite his speed, he didn't recover right away because of how heavy it was. He fell to the ground when I kicked the back of his knee. I grab my spear and aim it toward his neck."I thought my speed could beat you this time," Liam said. I dropped my spear and helped him get up."You got me with that unbelievable speed man," I told him, tapping his back. He pulled his helmet, "But you managed to counter it." I flashed him a sheepish smile before going to Imelda as I pulled out my helmet and my arm armor. "You idiotic boy!" She told me through gritted teeth. "I won my dear mentor, why are you so angry?""There are plenty of counterattacks for Liam's speed and you really did the risky one?" It's indeed risky. "How's your body condition?" Imelda asks me. "I'm good, you don't have to worry. But I know I can't train, I might need a good rest and food." I said scratching the back of my neck."That's what I told you! Go to the kitchen and ask for a meal. After resting for a while, find me in the practice range." She turns her back and talks to Liam's mentor, Mr. Hans. He gave me a thumbs-up when he saw me looking in their direction. I slightly bowed at him then put the armor and the weapon I use at the weaponry.I've been training under Imelda's direction for 21 months now. She forced me to use all of my efforts. There was a moment when the pain from all the training prevented me from getting out of bed. She assisted me in identifying my strong points and flaws and taught me various tactics that helped me hone my combat and strategic abilities, such as transferring a certain amount of energy and using it to heighten my senses and agility, similar to what Liam did earlier. But the strength that I have isn't enough to claim what's ours. After asking for food in the kitchen, I wrote a letter to my mother. For the past months, I haven't forgotten the sole reason why I entered this hell of a training camp."The annual Sataria training camp competition will be held next week. I assume you haven't forgotten the event?" Imelda said as I loaded my bow. I pulled the string with ease, not like the first time. "Of course. The winners will choose between attending the Academy or joining the Royal Army led by the great Duke of Trenston, Nathaniel Trenston VII.""Good. Did you evaluate your performance earlier? What things should you improve? What made you win?" She said while checking and correcting my posture."I did. My body will undoubtedly feel the effects of having to transfer more than 50% of my energy. The good news is that I, at least, used my weapon effectively, causing him to lose focus and temporarily lower his guard just in time for me to end the fight.""Shoot." I release the arrow. "Always be aware of your opponent's weak points. Analyze him, his movements, and the weapons he's using, how he uses his energy, and his fighting techniques of course." Imelda reminded me. "Two more shots, aim for the higher and lower section of the sixth circle." I nodded and focused on the target."Remember Nicholas, the upcoming tournament will not only allow you to enter the palace but you will surely be recognized in the whole kingdom of Sataraia. Show them the fruit of your labor." She taps my back. "Don't send your mother the letter you wrote earlier. You can visit her for a couple of days. Just be back three days before the competition begins.""I will, thank you." Your mentor will determine how frequently you can visit your family after you've joined the training camp. I haven't seen my mom in ten months, so I'm looking forward to it. "Go pack the things you need. I will take this back to the weaponry." I murmured my thanks and immediately jogged towards my quarter. On my way to the entrance of the camp, I run into Mr. Hans, Liam, and a couple of trainees under Mr. Hans."Going home for a while?" Liam asked as he scanned my belongings."Yes, Ms. Imelda gave me permission to see my mother.""Make sure to return for the tournament man. I will definitely beat you there." Liam declared. I chuckled at the thought. I shrugged my shoulders and said, "We'll see.""Enjoy your brief vacation, Nicholas, see you at the match." Mr. Hans said. I bid my temporary goodbye and made my way to my humble home to surprise my dear mother.Even though it has only been ten months, Lanae's streets changed a lot. There are lots of people everywhere on the streets. The kids are playing with each other and running about everywhere. I was roaming my eyes around when I remembered to stop by the bakery to buy my mother's favorite bread. For her to appreciate the treats, I also purchased a variety of pastries."Nicholas?" I turned to see who was calling me. "Good Lord it's you, Nicholas!" We caught the attention of the people inside the bakery because of Tania's loud voice."Tone down your voice Tania," I told her."How could I?! We haven't seen one another in a while!" She replied, grabbing hold of my arm and dragging me out of the bakery. She told me stories of the men swarming about my mother. Even though her son, I, is already 20 years old, my mother is still young and no one can deny that she still looks young.Tania continues to blabber all sorts of rumors spreading in the Kingdom. "Did you know that the Duke of Trenston is looking for his son?" out of the entire nonsense rumor she told me, this one caught my attention."He has a son? I thought he wasn't interested in anyone even if they are from high society. He's not even married." I ask Tania out of curiosity."Well, that's the big question. He wasn't seen with anyone even before, and according to Genevieve, he doesn't even attend any parties. That's why we were all flabbergasted by the news." I tried to ponder everything, how can a Duke with no history with women suddenly look for a child?"Hurry up Nicholas, for sure Aunty Rachel is excited to see you again." Tania pulled me as if asking me to run. I brush off the thought about the duke and carry on until we arrive at our house."I'll be back Nicholas, I'll just take the fruits and bread that I bought to my sister." I nodded, then she hurriedly walked away.I sighed and pushed open the door. "Mom, I'm home!" The aroma of chicken porridge assaulted my nose as soon as I walked inside the house. I dropped my things on the wooden chair and went straight to the kitchen, where I saw my beloved mother. "Knock, knock!" I remarked, leaning against the kitchen doorway. She turned around and surprise was very evident on her face. "Nicholas!" She came running over to me and gave me a huge embrace. "My son became more handsome over time." I laugh at her remark. She looks at me and touches my face saying, "You've become manlier since the last time I saw you, Nicholas. Have you been straining yourself? Please take good care of yourself, my dear." She, again, gave me one more hug. I was patting her back when I felt my shoulder moisten. "Mom! Why are you crying?" She sobbed, "I just can't believe that my son isn't the small kid I used to sing lullabies to anymore." I laughed as I dried her tears. "Enough dramas," she moved away and checked the po
My brief vacation was quickly over. And now I'm returning to the training camp. I've spent the last days training, assisting my mother, and even teaching Tania some basic self-defense because she said it might come in handy.I've been also thinking about my uncle. Why hadn't I predicted this? Of course, as the King's vassal, he'll be there to watch the tournament."Nicholas? Is there something that bothers you? You've been zoning out since yesterday." My mother asks with concern. She has no idea what I have in mind. She is unaware that I already know our true identities. She won't like everything, therefore I've hidden it all from her. She kept her family information to herself. I put on a front that I was not interested in any of them, but when I was 17, I started to wonder why it was just my mother and me. Who are my relatives, where did we really come from, and, most importantly, who my father is?"I'm fine Mom. I'm just thinking about the tournament." I reassure her with a smile.
The competition is divided into three stages. The first stage requires you to demonstrate your combative abilities. The King will choose names at random to fight against each other. Your skill with weaponry and tactics, as well as your stamina and endurance, will be put to the test in the second stage. The last one, according to Imelda, is where things typically become nasty. We can utilize any weapon we have at our disposal. And the last one standing will be named the winner. The King is presently seated in the northern section of the Arena, and the eight of us are arranged in a line in front of him. Alexander was sitting to his right and the director was to his left as he was seated. As I observed Alexander, he appears to be helping the king choose who will face whom.I closed my eyes firmly, trying to keep my hatred at bay."Milla Bryson of Rendyl, and Hugo Fortden of Fortden Barony." The King announced. As the first trainees are announced, the audience applauds in excitement."Lia
MillaWhat an idiot. I thought as the two trainers took the insane girl out of the stadium.I witnessed the Director sincerely apologizing to the King for what had happened. Maybe the energy affected the girl's brain, affecting her ability to think rationally. As soon as the next and final match was announced, I noticed Imelda's champion approaching the center. I once witnessed him engage in combat with the other trainees whilst Imelda was watching. I often saw him working out by himself. I never saw him not practice, whether it was with a weapon or simply his bare hands."Nicholas is fortunate. Ryner isn't that challenging," a guy named Liam said. I didn't bother looking at him since I didn't really care. He isn't the only one who has attempted to strike up a conversation with me. But I have no intention of befriending anyone from here. I may have been exiled from my homeland, but that does not mean I will instantly live like a Sataraian."You know, I'm
NicholasIt's difficult to keep up when your opponent's strength involves agility. As I flee from these annoying arrows, I can feel the muscles in my legs tense up. I could sense Randen's presence behind me, so I tried to pick up my pace. When I reached the end of the pouring arrows and passed through the massive barrier, I noticed a large improvised tower. I slowed down when I spotted Liam crouching on the ground and Milla staring up at it with blood trickling down her left arm. At this point, I shouldn't be helping Liam because I have a battle to win.I picked up the pace and climbed the tower. I managed to pass through the first floor, but a wooden flank smacked the side of my torso, causing me to stumble slightly. As soon as I had a thought, I leaped onto the wood and used it to climb to the third floor, avoiding the spears that were about to pierce my skin. For a few seconds, I look down. I noticed the others
"You finally wake up," a familiar voice said as I opened my eyes to find myself surrounded by a wooden wall. "You were asleep for two whole days because you lost too much blood during the tournament," Mr. Hans explained as he handed me a glass of water."Sir," I said, struggling to get out of bed. "What happened when I passed out?""Obviously, Milla Bryson won. After you passed out, Milla was the only one who remained conscious." I exhaled, dismayed."I know how upsetting it is, becoming the champion is within your grasp but has suddenly become out of reach, this means that you have something more important to do than be the champion. Learn from what happened and try to figure out why it happened.""I'll go tell your trainer you've regained consciousness," he adds as he walks out of the room.I drank the water Mr. Hans had given me while staring out the window beside my bed. The event has been over for two days, and I'm curious what kind of awarding ceremony took place. I sighed and d
"I told you not to push yourself to be the winner, Nicholas!" My mother said as soon as I told her everything that happened throughout the tournament. We're currently enjoying lunch in the dining room of our home."But I'm fine now, mom. I'm here standing strong and healthy," I say proudly."You stubborn child!""Don't be upset, my dear mother. I have a suggestion," I said. She waited for me to continue "You know I have to work within the Palace mother, and I was wondering if you wanted to move to the capital so I could pay you more visits.""No chance, Nicholas. I don't like where this talk is going," she continued to eat. "But, Mom, the capital is almost a day's ride by vessel. If you stay here I won't be able to visit you as often.""I'm okay with it, Nicholas. I can visit you, but I won't be staying in the capital," she said firmly making me sigh in defeat."All right, mom. But, please, stay safe here.""Nothing happened to me during the months you were gone, so I'm good," I nodde
A high-ranking noble. It's been five days since we went to the Count's house and since I knew that information about my father. I kept my silence and did not dare ask my mother about it. Days passed by quickly and I just did my routine every day. Tania's joining me on my morning practice, and then I'll help my mother with her chores throughout the day like, going to the market and cleaning the house. Sometimes Reiss visits me asking about my final plan but most of the time bragging about his lover."Are all your belongings ready?" My mother asks as she checks the boxes full of personal stuff which I will bring to the capital tomorrow."Yes, Mom.""Nicholas, try not to involve yourself with the Royal Family too much or any other nobles. They are all dangerous, and no one but you can protect yourself from those of power." My mother said worriedly."Mom, I can protect myself and I promise I'll just do my job to teach the Crown Prince, nothing more." She nodded. I understand why she kee
Milla"Have you noticed it?""Definitely, Sir." "I felt a strong pull, which I never experienced even during my time among the mages in Rendyl. I'm sure you didn't expect it as well as someone who was born in a mana-filled environment.""Yes, General. It was no ordinary flow of mana,"I stood in the commander's office where General Nathaniel was staying for this month's army meeting."I want you to keep an eye on him, and when the opportunity arises, tell him everything. Help him control it while I investigate him and his family. You may leave now, Milla, and do tell the commander that I have things to tell him about the meeting today.""As you command, General," I said and bowed before leaving the office.General Commander/Duke Nathaniel Treston possesses the same capability as me. And it is the capability to manipulate man. Despite not being born in Rendyl, his link to the kingdom lies in his mother, who is a Rendyl citizen, making him a fellow mana user. It was through his assist
"Master?" I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I didn't notice he was calling me already."Sorry, Prince Xydel. I thought she looked familiar, but then I realized that she looked like the young princess," I said chuckling, masking the confusion that I was feeling. The prince just nodded and kept on showing me other portraits of the other Royal families and where they are now. After giving me a tour of the Palace's garden, which is off-limits to most people unless they have permission from the Royal Family, he mentioned that he had to go to a court meeting with the Aristocrats and other court officials."Good luck, Your Highness. Please believe in your skills and capabilities and show them that you are the Crown Prince of this Kingdome," "Thanks, master. And feel free to talk to me casually, no need to address me as Prince or Your Highness. I even call you master in front of everyone because I respect you," he said, sounding a bit sulky."I mean, everyone calls you that because we a
"Sir Alexander! It's good to see you today!" The queen said when she saw the vassal. "Good day to the beautiful moon of the Sataraia," he said and bowed gracefully to the Queen. "I heard from the King that you will meet Prince Xydel's trainer, so I spare some time to join you."He said looking at me. When our eyes met he nodded his head and smiled at me which gave me the creeps. "Oh, how nice of you. Come in, join us," he entered the room and made his way toward the seat across from mine. Prince Xydel sat beside me and the princess beside her mother. "Your uniform suits you well, Sir Nicholas. Not all soldiers look good in that uniform." the Vassal said. The way he looks at me suggests something. Suddenly, the scene on my first duty came into my mind. He likes young boys like me. "Thank you, Sir," I said even though I felt really uneasy with the look that he was giving me. "It does suit you master." the Prince said as lively as ever, agreeing to the Vassal. "Oh I forgot to introd
"The Queen requests your presence tomorrow," the Commander said as I was eating my breakfast in the dining hall. "What?" I said a little shock. I tried recalling what I did for the past days, but as long as I can remember I haven't done anything that offended the Queen or any of the Royals."Well, she just relayed the message to me.""Thank you, Commander," I said still thinking about the Queen's request to see me tomorrow. If I'm not mistaken, the Queen is really nice and kind compared to the King. Since polygamy is not a thing here, her children are the sole heir to the throne, so there's no competition on it except for her own children. After finishing my meal, I headed towards my quarters to prepare for my daily duty at the training ground. I was already in possession of my uniform and it fit me perfectly. It's a Black and Gold army uniform similar to the captain's, except for the embroidered logo on the shoulder and chest which distinguished us from them.I got used to everythin
The prince has improved so much since he opened up to me. He also practices authority most of the time and that's a good thing already.During my personal training, a lot of the soldiers in training were asked to spar with me, but of course, I'm not gonna do it with them. Everything has been well here in the training ground, except, everyone seems to hate me so much because of the favors that I have been receiving. As I began my work in the training area, I couldn't help but notice Milla. She was always on her own, sparring with no one but herself. It was hard not to see that she was being bullied by a group of female knights. They would throw things at her and even go so far as to splash her with dirty water. It was cruel and unfair treatment, but Milla never seemed to react to it. Instead, she would just look at them and walk away, which only caused the other soldiers to laugh at her. It was far from the Milla I knew in the training camp. Back then, she was a fierce and fearless fi
Commander Dyle's voice boomed, "How many times do I have to remind you to keep your head cool? You're assigned to a new post, and you're already getting reassigned on your first day?" I knew better than to argue with him and kept silent, just following him.Suddenly, he opened up and shared something personal, "I'm a peasant as well. Born in the poorest part of the country." His voice suddenly shifts to his normal one. I was intrigued, wondering why he was telling me this."Is that why you were angry with the soldiers?" I asked out of curiosity."Don't assume that I did it for you. I did it for myself." He replied firmly, "When you beat them, I saw myself in you, as I had done the same thing in the past.""I was quite taken aback when they referred to me as the vassal's toy boy.""He has a reputation in this place. As you may already know, in the past, good-looking recruits were usually recommended by the Vassal. These recruits were usually from commoner villages or low-ranking noble
Milla was surrounded by our fellow royal guards as if they were being friendly with her. Not until I saw one of them grab Milla's shoulder to get her attention."Don't even try to be involved with them. This is one of the things that she should overcome to prove herself."Just then I realized what they usually say when you are working in the palace: everyone is your enemy. I continue eating fighting the urge to go to approach Milla. After eating with the commander, he asked me to meet him at the entrance of the training area and informed me that I would be assigned to the southern gate of the Palace, and he would personally guide me there. After taking a quick bath, I put on the temporary uniform provided to me. To be honest, I didn't think I would get a job here after losing in the tournament. But thankfully, the King has shown me his favor and granted me this opportunity.I put on my boots and headed straight to the meeting place. The area was radiant in the sunlight, with soldiers
The commander and I both kneel as soon as the crown prince walks into the chamber."I greet the only star of the empire, Prince Xydel Fredyn Eran.""It's good to see you again, Commander Dyle." The little prince's gentle voice is much different from the king's.Like Commander Dyle, I got to my feet.I bowed and said, "Nicholas Avenier greets the Crown Prince.""So you are the new teacher that His Majesty hires?""Yes, Your Highness. I'm truly honored for this given opportunity.""It's nothing, Sir Nicholas. I look forward to our classes together," he replied with warmth. The Prince is a more delicate person than the king, who has an authoritative demeanor. Perhaps, for this reason, Commander Dyle is quite attached to him."I still have a class to attend, so I'll excuse myself," he whispered before leaving the room.Commander Dyle accompanied me to the chamber reserved for the knights and guards. I thank him before entering the room to which I have been assigned.I start by observing e
When I realized that we had already docked, I returned to the carriage. We will arrive at the palace before dusk, the coachman assured. I was simply glancing out the carriage window, observing the residents of the capital. Much nobility is strolling around the bustling streets, and guards are on patrol. The coachman makes a halt at a restaurant a short while later. "Mr. Avenier, you will eat here before continuing on your journey to the palace," the coachman stated with courtesy. I gave a nod and exited the carriage. People are simply passing by it, treating it like any other neighborhood eatery. Perhaps as a result of its extremely plain external decoration? The coachman stayed at the carriage, but I ignored the thought and went into the restaurant. With hesitation, I opened the door, and a well-dressed man welcomed me right away. "Mr. Aveneir, right? Count Frenp asked us to serve you well for today," he continued, sounding as though he was anticipating me. " This is the tab
