Sunflower Village, 8 years ago
The bright full moon lit up the night sky, the sun had just set an hour ago and young Verner was in trouble; "Mom is going to kill me!!" he cried and he ran home as fast as he could, sweating heavily. His mother had sent him to get some spices from a nearby market away from the village earlier, but he got carried away by street games and lost track of time. He was really late and had to run as fast as he could before the night got even lonelier. Bats whistled, crickets chirped, owls hooted, the young night was filled with sounds, but as Verner got closer to home, they disappeared slowly, making the journey even scarier "My legs hurt..." he muttered, he stopped to take a break and breathe, sweat dripping from his smooth little boy face. His legs were hurting terribly and so he had to start walking instead of running because he was too tired. All of a sudden, the quiet night became louder, a lot louder, not from bats and crickets, but people, people crying, wailing, screaming. Verner became terrified, the sounds were coming from his village uphill, and became louder the closer he got. At this point he was to scared to think, to feel pain anymore, he began to run as fast as he could, even faster than before, running through the thick forests until he got a view of his village from the hill. A massive wave of fire and smoke had consumed the entire village, but this was no ordinary fire, it burnt red, bright blood red. He could hear all the screams and wails now, with thunderous sounds from the hoards of humans fleeing the village and that's when it struck him... "MOM!!!" he ran immediately towards the village, ran through the burning houses, most structures in sunflower village were built with wood, so everything was literally burning to the ground. The fire and smoke made it hard to breathe, hard to think, but he had to find his mother. He ran and ran until he got there, his small home burning heavily with blood red flames, but his mother wasn't in there, she was just outside, with her throat slit, lying in a pool of her own blood. "MOM!!!!" he screamed as he rushed towards her dying body, tears rolling out of his eyes, "No...no no!!!...mom please no!!!" he cried and cried, his hands tightly gripping her blood stained dress, but she did not respond, until she did; "Ver...r...ner" she muttered"Mom...mom?" he replied with tears , despair. "Run...p...please" she cried. "Mom?" he noticed a huge shadow forming in front of him. He looked up and in sheer horror, saw the man who did all this, the devil of devils. He was almost 7 feet tall and wore a shiny black cloak, his hair blood red, just like his flames. He looked into Verner's eyes, and Verner did the same. "WHO ARE YOU??!!!...WHY DID YOU DO THIS!!!....WHAT DO YOU WANT???!!!" Verner cried and screamed, the devil only looked at him, almost with pity, he took a step closer and Verner screamed, gripping his mother's dress even more. "GO AWAY!!!!..." he cried out, the devil kept staring at him, then he offered his hand to Verner, as if telling him to follow him. Verner was confused, frightened, frozen, and then, out of the flames, burst a man dressed in a green and blue robe, his left arm was chopped off and he was terribly wounded, he held a massive sword with a shiny silver blade and sea weed like quillons. "MALACHAR!!!!..." he screamed as he launched himself towards the huge devil with his sword, he made a giant slash and a huge wave and water came out of his sword and struck the devil, throwing him some feet away; "....You die here TODAY!!!" he charged towards the devil again, but he stood up and summoned a massive wave of red flames around himself. Malachar glanced back at Verner, he looked at him straight back, dead in the eyes. The flames surrounding him shot into the sky and with them he went, the devil was gone. The man with the sea weed sword turned around to look at Verner, his blue and green coat stained with blood, his left arm that was chopped off still loosing blood but he couldn't think about any of that now. Verner held on to his mother, crying begging her to wake up, but she was already gone. The man looked around and saw all the dead burning bodies, the destruction, the chaos that had come as a result of his failure as a devil hunter, his eyes filled with tears, pain, as he watched the little boy cry, he failed to save his mother, it's his fault all of this happened he thought to himself as he couldn't shake off the guilt. And when the sun rose, the fire had burnt everything it could, all that was left was ash and ruins, and in the middle of it, the devil hunter carried little Verner away from the scene. Verner had cried so much he couldn't even speak again. All he could think of was the devil who had taken his mother from him, and while the hunter carried him from the village, he made a vow to himself; If the devil Malachar ever showed up again, he will not let him go unpunished, even if it costs his life, he will avenge his mother.Willow Valley, Present day. "I'll get him this time, this is the best chance I've got". Verner said as he tied a rope to a trap he just set in the forest pathway, waiting for master Rodric to walk by. It's been 8 years since that night, the night he lost his mother, the night his hometown, sunflower village was burnt to the ground. Verner was now 15 and had spent all these years growing and training to be a devil hunter just like master Daegan, the hunter who saved him from the fire that night. Daegan raised and trained Verner personally until he was 12, then handed him over to Rodric, his disciple, in order to help Verner learn from other people as well, but Rodric had other ideas. "I'll prove to him that I don't need any Qi or powers to be a powerful hunter, and I'll do it by beating his ass today". Verner tied the ropes with a sinister smile as he applied finishing touches to his set of traps. Master Rodric walked this path everyday to get to his tea plantation and a set of tra
The sun was shining very brightly on the green leaves in Willow valley which were looking even fresher with water droplets from the morning dew. Verner was back home after his horribly failed attempt to ambush master Rodric. He couldn't help but think about Rodric's challenge. It sounded very casual but there was a huge chance that he wasn't going to be alive by this time tomorrow. He sat in the dojo behind the house, staring at all the swords and weapons hung on the wall. Many of them were enchanted; weapons that have been laced with Qi or spells to give them special abilities. He had only ever used regular weapons during training, but if he was going to survive the night, he had to burrow some of them. "Rodric wouldn't mind if I took a thing or two". He took a bunch of pocket blades and fixed them inside his coat, then he glanced over the swords until he chose one that had a metallic blue coloured blade with a spell inscribed on it. "Thunder flash spear", he read out, slightly con
" One...two...three..." Verner counted as he waited for whatever was in the bushes to attack him, his sword almost drown out completely, and then... 'SLASH!!!'He whipped his sword out and slashed the air, expecting a way bigger target, but it was just a rabbit, it ran between his legs and hopped off into the bushes again. "Phew..." he picked up his basket and hung it on his back "can't believe I was actually afraid of a bunny" he thought. He wiped sweat off his forehead as he continues his journey home, but he began to hear the rustling sounds again, this time a lot more precise. He paused and looked around, drew his sword out completely this time. "Hello...is anybody there?". The forest was silent, only the birds were chirping, but he wasn't going to let his guard down, he was very sure someone was creeping on him. He stood still, holding his sword with both arms, waiting to strike, and that's when he noticed some vines twisting around his legs, but it was too late... 'GBAM!!...G
Rodric stood on a hill and looked over the tea plantation, he watched as a few locals picked leaves and put in the baskets hung on their backs, with straw hats to shield their faces from the sun. Rodric owned a large strip of the plantation, and made a lot of money from here. Being one of the Sentinels in the guardian society, Rodric had the luxury of never being sent on missions or to track devils, that was for scouts and majors, sentinels only watched over their home lands, run the business of their respective clans and only get summoned to fight in other lands if a black grade devil or higher emerges. "That kid, I don't even know why I agreed to train him", Rodric rubbed his little purple goatee, his long dark purple hair was covered by his straw hat. "I and Daegan have sold him a dream that will never come true, now he's gonna die young, for nothing" Rodric's face turned very sour, he was deep in thought. "Even if I drop the challenge and force him to shut up I can't protect him
"Thunder Flash Spear... RELEASE!!!"In a split second, Brogan's saw a flash of lightning blitz past him, then Verner appeared behind him, taking the exact same stance he did before the flash attack. "What is this, I can't move my body, how did he pull this off?". Brogan thought, he tried harder to move but couldn't. "Everything...the world seems to be in slow motion, including my body", he noticed a bug that was flying past him, except that it was frozen in mid air. "I only saw a flash of lightning and the boy just disappeared, if my theory is correct, and what I've heard is true, then..." "After lightning...comes the thunder"'GBOOMM!!!' A roaring thunder sound exploded through the air and a massive slash opened on his chest, the rocks that coated his arms broke into pieces at the same time. The thunder flash, an attack so fast his body didn't even sense that it had been cut, and this brat with no Qi just pulled it off. "Did I just...lose?" he asked himself as he collapsed to h
The sun slowly faded away in the evening sky, the night drew nearer and nearer, with it's devils that dance under the moon and stars, and eat any human that they come across. Rodric walked back home, he walked through the same path he followed in the morning, the path he followed every day, he scoffed when he came across the traps Verner set earlier in the morning. "I wonder what he's up to" Rodric said as he continued to walk home, feeling a little uneasy, a little guilty. "It's part of the training...it's part of the training" he repeated, trying to make himself feel less guilty, even though he knew he wasn't supposed to be. He arrived at his house, it was very quiet, unusually quiet, "aren't the boys home?" he started feeling uneasy again, but then... "Honey...you're home" Amah came out of the door, combing her long black hair, she leaned for a kiss but he didn't respond. "Why are the boys so quiet?""The ate a little too much this afternoon, so they fell asleep early" "Where's
Pine grove valley, 3 nights ago. The half moon in the night sky was shining brighly over the little village. Most families had already locked their doors and shut themselves off for the night as they heard rumors of a devil in the mountains. Their only source of confidence was that a sentinel hunter lived in willow valley which was a few kilometers away, probably why only a few devils dared to come close to the village, but that wasn't enough. Tito, a man was riding on his bicycle through the forest path with his 9 year old daughter seated at his front, he elongated the bike saddle so both of them could sit properly, they were coming back home after a good day at the market and the sun had set just an hour ago. "Dad I'm scared..." the girl said."It's ok Nina...nothing will happen, we're just a little late, we'll be home any minute from now" he comforted his daughter. He was terrified too, the nights these days were so quiet because everyone got into their homes as soon as the sun
Pine grove valley, Current day; Pine grove valley was another settlement of people within the Green crest mountain range, the largest and longest mountain group of mountains in the Celestra Empire and the whole world as it spanned almost Ten thousand kilometers. The mountains in this range had valleys in between them filled with lush green forests and scattered human villages. Sun flower village, willow valley and pine grove valley were all in this mountain range, but Sunflower village was in the far east and willow valley and pine grove were far west. Rodric and Verner got to village in the pine grove valley at night. The sun had just set and the streets were gradually emptying. Lamp lights lined the roads to help people see, but they also made the streets look very pretty at night. Rodric and Verner stood on the roof of a building and watched the locals move around. Rodric seemed to be deep in thought, Verner just stared at him cluelessly. "So uhm...what do we do now?"Rodric ru
