Val watched Desmond disappear as he lept from one wall to another and vanished over the rooftop. Val was full of roiling emotions. She had missed the Shadow she had been hunting and now had an empty crystal, but Desmond had given her a glimpse of a life that she could only dream about. She wondered if it would improve her world, or lead her in unexpected directions. The thought that her mother had been a part of the order and that she might find memories of her there lend speed to her steps as she hurried back to Emma.
If she were to go with this Desmond guy to Suria, she might be able to find out about her mother. After all, it sounded like that might have been where her mother had been heading all along. But if she left Emma, would Emma make it? Would she be able to satisfy Vex’s demands for coin?
Perhaps if Maggie could keep Emma on, and not have to split the pay with herself, then perhaps Emma would have a decent life with Maggie. She decided to put it aside until closer to Desmond’s return. No point in railing anyone up before she was ready to leave.
She figured she would use the time to make sure her storage crystals were all full.
Two weeks later, the evening before she was to meet Desmond was an ominously foggy evening. This time of night, Emma would be off the streets but would likely be at the den house with the other street kids for the evening meal.
When she arrived at the inn that the Dock Jackals were using as their base this month, the door guard Borgash nodded as he recognized her and opened the door.
“Dinner is almost over, but the kitchen might have some scraps if you have coin.”
“Thank you, Borgash. Is Vex in his office?”
“He should be counting the day’s haul for a while longer.”
Instead of heading to the dining hall like she normally would, Val headed up the stairs to Vex’s office. She nocked nervously.
“Enter”
She walked in to find Vex in his favorite place, seated behind his wide desk, small mounds of coins on one side and a pile of loose coins on the other.
“You have your day’s dues?” Vex asked, getting straight to business.
Val reluctantly reached into her pouch and pulled out the 50 dret she had set aside for the day and set them on the desk.
“Take a tile, the kitchen will be closing soon. Best hurry.”
“Sir, I-“
“Yes? Something happen?”
“I got a job… I am not going to be around anymore after a fortnight.”
“A job? You know I assign the jobs. The guild is still owned its cut. Who approached you with a job?”
“It's not in town. It's in the west.”
“West? You intending to run? Who will cover your corner?”
“Emma is still around and I am sure the kids will be happy to have my corner.”
“Val, you are one of my best earners. You cannot just leave. And you owe 50% of this job to the guild. You are one of us,” Vex declared, standing up and rounding the desk.
Val had to think fast. This would be dangerous for Emma if she says the wrong thing, but she was also not going to pay Vex for work that had nothing to do with him or his territory.
“I am leaving the guild, vex”
“Is that so? No one leaves this family. Besides, no other guild will have you. you would be branded a traitor.”
“You will not see me after tonight. Goodbye Vex” Val turned and headed for the door, but was flung back toward the desk as Vex yanked on her hair.
“You think you can just walk away from me?” Vex towered over her. she was still young, and his huge frame was terrifying.
His hands tangled in her hair as he slammed his fist on the desk bending her backward and banging her head against the hard wood. His face filled her vision as he leered down at her., “You are mine. You don’t get to just walk out.”
Val panicked and flayed her legs, catching Vex in the groin with her knee. She rolled off the desk and tried to run but vex grabbed her ankle, tripping her.
“Little bitch!”
Val turned over, struggling against Vex’s vice grip on her leg. She kicked hard with her free leg, her heel connecting with Vex’s face. He grunted and released her leg as he moaned in pain, blood slicking his face from his nose.
Valkyrie scrambled for the door and grabbed the handle, pulling herself back to her feet. Just as she yanked on the door, she felt a sting across her cheek. A dagger twanged into the wood of the door a breath away from her eye, sticking point first into the grain of the door.
Val looked over her shoulder at Vex, who was wiping blood from his face, still clutching his groin.
“Run, little bitch. If I catch you back in Dockside, death will be too kind of an end for you.”
Val fled from the den house, a tear trickling down her cheek, burning as the salty tears crossed the gash from Vex’s dagger. She prayed to the gods that his dagger had not been poisoned.
When Val finally made it back to Maggie’s bakery, the blood was drying on her cheek, but she didn’t want to waste a whole crystal on such a cut. The scar might remind her of a debt she would pay back. Vex would feel her blade someday. She only hoped Desmond would be able to train her as well as he had indicated.
Maggie gasped when she saw Val, and quickly got a rag and began cleaning her face. Emma came in and was the first to ask what had happened.
“Avoid Vex as best you can.” was all she offered.
Val took the evening to explain the opportunity Desmond had offered. Maggie was skeptical but after hearing how Vex had treated Val this evening, she agreed that Val needed to get out of town for a while. Emma just hugged Val. Val knew Emma understood better than most what an opportunity it was to get out of Dockside.
The next evening, Val collected her meager belongings. As she said goodbye to Emma. Maggie had agreed to keep Emma on and even offered Emma a bed in her home. Emma was growing fast, having just turned 13, and would soon be a tall beauty. Now that she had a stable life and a place to stay with Maggie, Val hoped she would do well. “I will come back and see you all as soon as I can. I don’t know how long training will take though.” Maggie didn’t understand what training Val was talking about but Emma seemed to have an idea. She leaned in, pulling Val into a tight hug. She whispered in her ear, “be safe, little reaper.” Less than an hour later, Val was waiting in the ally where she had met Desmond. “Glad to see you decided to accompany me.” Came the deep voice of Desmond behind her. She spun to find the dark warrior only inches behind her. “You look more and more like your mother. If you have half of her talent, you will make a great addition to Suria, and perhaps even the order.”
Valkryie’s eyes fluttered open as she heard angry voices around her. Darkness greeted her as she tried to blink away the drowsy feeling numbing her body.“How dare you drug a Silverblood! What right do you have to question the Spark bearers?” Desmond was shouting.Three men stood around him, revolvers held at the ready. Brayden brashly declared, “In this fort, I am in charge of gate security. It is policy to question everyone who enters with the truth serum. Not only that , but a simple prick can tell us if she is Suria or not.”“And? She passed your little test didn’t she?” Desmond roared. “Your prerogative ends when it comes to the Spark blessed. You have no rights when it comes to the gods damned Sparks!”“We don’t know she is silverblood or that she bares a Spark. She didn’t flag when I initiated the reveal command. Even yours responded to that.”“She had a gods damned Elite level! Of course, it wouldn’t respond to you! It will only respond to another spark, and a high level at th
“Depending on your mastery and needs, most offer five levels of training. The order has an established rate while the Counsel of elders affords full time soldiers a training stipend. 500 Dret for the first level training is the going rate for Silverbloods not contracted with the army. Some students need to repeat that several times to pass.” Desmond eyed her knowingly, “Everything costs. But we will address your needs soon. Now, each successive level of training costs an additional 500 dret. So level two is 1000 dret, level three is 1500 and so on. All told, in order to master all of the trades, one must have substantial funds. Most of the soldiery only get one level paid for by the council, and more based on their rank. On that note, come with me.” Desmond led her to a long hallway and around a corner where the walls began to shift to metal panels. As she walked, Val notices strange blue veins in the metal that glowed, illuminating the hall. “The ancients left these bases. The tech
Val closed the notebook and stood. She wondered if Desmond would be done yet and decided to make her way back to the training hall. As she walked, trailing a hand along the blue lines in the walls, the color brightened and shimmered, giving her a sense of being home. When she arrived at the hall she noticed several people milling around a large table. She made her way over and found a huge 3D model of the world. “Can I help you?” a woman asked. Val spun to find a thin lady not much taller than herself with long brown hair braided down her back. “I am waiting on Desmond.” “Ah, then you must be Desmonds little pet project the whole place has been talking about,” she said, considering Val and taking in her appearance. The lady then pointed to the large table before her and asked, “Do you know what this is?” “Not really. I guess it is Parcia?” “Close,” she chuckled, “This is all nine realms. The world is much larger than you think. I am Lauren Brennen, the missions and investment man
Val soon found herself in a maze of false buildings and makeshift allies. She quickly found herself a dark shadow to hide in along a roof top along the main passage. Here, she didn’t need to worry about passerby’s seeing her, only focusing on Desmond. Shortly, she could feel his presence enter the street and approach her hiding spot. When he had just passed beneath her, Val flipped soundlessly off the roof and sent a lightning-fast thrust at Desmond’s back. Her blade flowed seamlessly as she made her slash with her dagger just as she had done with countless Shadows. Her signature move was a seamless stroke through the chest and back across the neck. However, her blade didn’t complete the motion she had hoped and the next thing she knew, a fist connected with her temple, followed by a spinning kick to her neck that sent her sailing across the ground, tumbling like a limp rag doll. When light finally broke through the black of her mind and vision, Desmond was towering over her. Des
Valkyrie Black, Age 12 Valkyrie wandered the valley one morning before her lesions would start. Being that it was mostly only the enlisted soldiers performing continuing training here until the next cohort of students arrived, the various masters tended to not want to meet with her until later in the morning. Val was still up with the first rays of sunshine, so she filled her free time with exploring every inch of the fortress she could reach. While the grand hall’s mastery challenge eluded her, there were few other places a curious twelve-year-old couldn’t reach. She had yet to be permitted into Suria, but the pass through the mountains was riddled with caves worth exploring. There was a particular path that Val was keen to check out today. She slipped past the sentries and made her way into the second cave on the left. To most people, this was a very shallow cave with nothing interesting. However, Valkyrie’s thin frame allowed her to check out some interesting formations in the
Val saw another flash of red in her vision and leaned back, narrowly dodging another stone thrown her direction. It was followed by a flurry of small stones thrown at various speeds. The last one she reached out a hand and caught, spinning her body to absorb the impact and hurled the stone back at her attacker.Morgessa grinned, dodging the stone with the barest of movements. “Now you are learning. Never let an attack go to waste when you can use it against your attacker. I think you might do well with us. What do you say? Train with me and my students?”Val considered for a minute. She was already spending a small fortune with the other trainers. “What will it cost?”Morgessa chuckled, “Desmond was right about you, you are sharp. I don’t require coin for my training. What I do require is Scath plasma. There are many things a Spark Blessed can use Scath plasma for. Even this cave is guarded by a Scath lock that requires plasma to open. Not a full unit mind you, but one crystal might o
A month later, a messenger found Valkyrie as she was finishing training with the fortress dagger master. She thanked the boy who was not much younger than herself and tore open the letter. Meet me at eleven hour in the cave where we first spoke. M Morgessa. Val knew of no one else who would summon her in such a way. She thanked her instructor and performed the customary fist-to-heart salute the soldiers all used for those of rank before heading towards the cave she had entered before. While she knew where the entrance was deep in the catacombs under the fortress, that passage required the sacrifice of a Scath to enter. As she slid unseen into the dark cave, her vision adjusted as it had before, with the cold of the walls contrasting only slightly with the cool air. She made her way to the larger cave with the magma pool and spotted Morgessa’s heat signature at the base of the rise she emerged on. she slid over the edge and dropped to the ground, kneeling head bowed on one knee bef
