Dear readers, hopefully, you are sticking with me as we slowly migrate back to where Valkyrie was born. I have also begun creating concept art for various characters so keep an eye out for those! I think Caradon will be an exciting place for us to spend some time! I look forward to sharing this next chapter of Valkyrie's life with you!
“What do you think causes the airship to lift?” Rowan’s question broke Valkyrie’s thoughts as she gazed out the window. “Hu?” “The airship. I heard the crew talking about the balloons. I have seen hot air balloons but those are not sustainable to lift as many people as we had aboard. There was simply too much weight.” Marcum joined in, “I heard that the scientists have created some new super light foam that allows them to insulate and contain hydrogen gas. The flammability is contained within the insulating bubbles.” Val wished she had taken the time to examine the structure more. Perhaps if she got the chance to ride on one back to Durres she would check to see if it was human ingenuity or if someone had utilized scath power. She would know within a few months for sure when her men reported back on the integration of the vessel into the Black Fleet. “what do you think?” Rowan asked, directing attention back to Valkyrie. She sighed, bored with a conversation that would lead nowhe
“And you, dear? What has brought you to Caradon?” Lady Lacilia asked. “Perhaps you seek your father?” Val was rocked from her mental wonderings by the question and thought furiously how to answer. “I have no intention of seeking my father out. I have other business in Caradon.” “I see. Well, I suppose it is for the best. I heard about your mother leaving with you many years ago. Your father was heartbroken that she left him. but I suppose time heals some wounds. He now has two sons and a young daughter. The oldest I believe is turning ten this year.” It was as if a knife was stabbing her heart. She had known that her father had likely moved on. That was the point of getting rid of her after all wasn’t it? She wasn’t good enough to be his heir, so toss her and her mother out and start over. All Val knew was that he was a cold bastard that had cost her mother her life and sentenced her to grow up on the streets. If it hadn’t been for Desmond, she would likely have ended up with the s
Valkyrie left the man unconscious in the tent and stole a bottle of liquor from the back of the merchant cart. She used it to clean her hands of blood, making sure to let the drops splash all over the man. She set the open bottle in his hands and examined her work. Her hands might stink of liquor for a bit, but the scene was convincing for anyone that found him.If he tried to tell the tale of a girl knifing him, most would likely pass it off as drunken hallucinations and his own bad luck. Val slipped back into the crown and continued through the fair. When a patrol of guardsmen stomped towards her, Val slipped into a large tent. She watched as they passed and then turned to leave through the back. She stopped when she nearly collided with a lady with huge glasses and long silvery dreadlocks in her hair.“A fae princess wanders into my tent, what fortune is this?”“I am no princess.”“She denies the royal blood but accepts the claim of fae? Curious. Curious indeed. Come, dear girl. Le
The next day, the four companions set out to visit the festival. Val had dressed with her armored corset hidden beneath a loose green tunic and had begrudgingly put on a long skirt to match. Reilynn had insisted that she could not go out in pants in the capital, it was just not done by ladies of any standing.Val was glad she could at least still conceal a few weapons about her person, and now that she had restocked many of her scath units, she would have access to at least a few rune daggers thanks to her spark. She had once again replaced two of the now full citrine from her hair for empty ones, hoping to get a chance at a few more scath wraths today. She would still have several units on her at all times now, with the storage to fill 16 more should the opportunity arise.Reilynn for her part was dressed in a red sun dress that danced around her ankles and a large hat. When they met the boys downstairs, Valkyrie thought they looked rather dashing in their flat caps a
Reilynn’s voice broke her from her thoughts as she tugged her brother Marcum towards the sound of the shooting contest.“I want to try that one!” she declared.Marcum looked at his sister with suprize, “You want to try using a firearm? As far as I know you have never even touched one.”“They are loud and uncouth but the ones they have here are not so bad. At least I don’t have to throw something. Its just stand and point right?” Reilynn asked arrogantly.Valkyrie suppressed a grin. Reilynn was not wrong that the simple rifles that the carnival had were notably quieter than most she had encountered while with the pirates or the very loud shotguns her guards had used when fending off the assassins. The only exception had been the suppressed pistol she had sent back to Durres. That one had been similar in noise to what she could hear coming from the booth.“It takes a bit more skill than that,” Marcum insisted. “It wouldn’t be a carnival attraction if there wasn’t a decent bit of skill i
“Anyone else buying?” Val asked.“Ah well, there is always Black group. They are the single largest insurance group in all of Parcia in the last ten years, and they run a rather large medical research group on the southwest side of town. I am not sure I have heard of them actually producing anything mind you. but they buy whatever Angela doesn’t take.”“Insurance?” Val asked. She knew her father’s business had been important and there was research involved but insurance seemed so mundane.“Why yes. There are a good number of warehouses and many of the merchant groups all use Black insurance. I believe even a few of the transport ships out of Durres use them as well.” Lord Donavan said. “Why so curious about Black group?”Val tried to change the conversation and asked about another of the plants. Lord Donavan seemed content to let the subject slip away as he proudly described the deadl
In a single swig, he gulped down the small shot of whiskey. He looked at the cup with an odd expression and huffed, “Wow, that has a bit more kick than I remember. Anyway, out of my seat, wench.”Val decided to move and let him take the seat while she moved to the other side of the desk. Martin sat down and shuffled some papers“If you are here to work, I have a spare room down the hall that isn’t being used. Its 25/75 to the house, and I expect you ready for callers by six each night.” Martin said and then a shiver raked his body and his tongue wiping the inside of his cheek. “Damn, that one had some afterbite.”“Martin, I told you. I am the Reaper, and I have chosen to take your soul this night. The Caradon guild is mine and you have no place in it. Before you die, however, I want you to answer one question. Has Barclay arrived yet?”“Barclay? No. I got a wire he was heading here, but I don&rsq
The next day, Valkyrie made the suggestion that they go shopping so she could get some new cloths. It had been a while since she had refreshed her available outfits, and despite the fact that clothes here would not be armor reinforced, she was in need of some new tunics and pants. A dress of her own would likely allow her to blend in better, even if she despised the garments.Reilynn was thrilled at the very idea of shopping and readily agreed. Both men groaned at the idea, so the General agreed to let them go alone only under the condition that two of his guardsmen accompany them.Val’s true intention would be to stop into a spice shop so she could get some of the pepper powder but that might take some work to elude the guards assigned to keep an eye on them.Reilynn insisted on taking them to her favorite dress shop in town. When the stern mistress who ran the shop saw Valkyrie and Reilynn enter she frowned at Valkyrie’s choice in attire.&l
