Valkyrie, Age 17
Val was feeling restless and needed to get away from the fortress. Cade had been sent on three missions in the last year, each time returning with tales of adventure. Fall was setting in, and the snows would start soon.
Valkyrie’s own missions so far had been mostly simple find and recover. Word would arrive that a hunter was needed to find some piece of art for a nobleman. It seemed the Surian nobility had a fascination with anything from the outside world. They had no contact beyond the mountains to the point most of the 8 realms believed all of Suria to be a myth or just a blank spot on the map.
While she could hunt for Scath shadow plasma, the quartermaster had been reducing her pay recently, citing an overstock since she had started. Even Morgessa seemed to have enough after their quarterly hunt.
The most profitable venture was a dangerous one that Val was uniquely suited for. About one hundred miles north, along the barrier mountains there was a hot spring that bubbled up high up on a summit. Val had to climb three hundred feet up a sheer face of mountain to reach the sheltered lake.
There was a population of small scorpions that made its home there. The venom from this scorpion was potent and was highly sought after by apothecaries both in Suria and around the realms. She had made the trip a few times but it was only accessible in the middle of summer, when enough of the snow had melted to make the cliff face climbable. Once fall set in, the whole area would be impossible to reach until early summer the next year.
The venom commanded a healthy price of 300,000 dret per oz. The problem was, even if she found every scorpion in the little grotto, she would still only manage to get a single milliliter. At 10,000 dret per milliliter, it was worth the trip and she would often stay for up to a week, attempting to milk as much from the scorpions as they could produce in that time.
Eager for something to do this fall, and needing to still make her self scares any time Varian, Kane, or Asura were around, Val made her way to Lauren’s map room. The woman was in her usual place, leaning over the three dimensional map while glancing at notes as aids brought her various notes and data.
“Cara, bring me that report from Jax. His comment in there about the gauntlets doesn’t fit.”
A girl just a few years older than Val rushed over with a pile of papers and set them next to Lauren, before skimming through them for the section Lauren had indicated.
“Umm, he says that rumor in the area is that a mercenary group on the west side of Emre has a general with a silver gauntlet on his right arm. Reports are that he is undefeated with the sword. Apparently, he commands quite the price for his services.”
“Silver? Hmm… definitely sounds like one of the missing sets. But who had silver?” Lauren mused.
Cara frowned as she flicked through her notes, “Umm, I think there was mention that…. oh where is it… Aerdrie? Aerdrie Celanil! That’s it!”
“Aerdrie Calanil? The moon blessed? Hmm, she is not one you hear of often. Alright, go find the file on her spark. Lets see what we can find. Ah! Valkyrie, good to see you again. What brings you to my corner of the mountain?” Lauren said, finally noticing Val.
“I want to go. If Cade is going, then let me. Alexa and I make a steller pair, and with Cade, we are nearly an unstoppable triad.” Val insisted.
“Go? Go where?”
“This… I don’t know, this silver gauntlet thing. You need it retrieved right?”
“Val, while it is true that its near blasphemy for someone like this merc to have one of the spark blessed armor, I am not about to send a bunch of kids after a fully armed and well trained mercenary group.”
“What’s the reward on a mission like that?” Val asked, determination in her voice.
Lauren sighed, “It depends. It’s a two week ride to where we believe the group is stationed. Likely somewhere on the border of Emre and Verril. There are some good mountains for them to hide in, and Verril is always getting into small wars. Emre is the cultural center that allows a group like that to move goods and supplies easily. So whoever does go would need likely a month and a half worth of provisions and accommodations.”
Lauren flicked her hand at her aid, and Cara instinctively passed her a clipboard.
“Lets see. A proper force of hunters would have three spark hunters, a cook and quartermaster, a wrangler, and five to eight Surian marines. So three carriages and a wagon. On a budget, it would be 200 dret per day in food, plus the horses, so 500 just in food.”
Lauren did a few more calculations, “the marines are O1 ranked, so they get 500 dret a month, so about 6000 dret for them, another 3000 for the hunters plus any loot they find, and the two hands and three drivers. Then the gear and cargo; this would be a 50,000 dret mission. So the reward on such an undertaking would be dependent on what one finds and loots. Whoever we do send will likely take a few mail parcels and other contracts along the way to off set the cost.”
“But what is the reward? Surely the council of lords has a standing bounty for such things.”
Lauren frowned and hesitated before responding, “There is. It’s how they convince many of the hunters to stay out for so long. The lords have around 30-40 full sets of armor, and several of the minor lords have incomplete sets from the original war.”
“They have a standing bounty of 20,000 dret for any piece of Spark technology, so to just go after the one piece would at best be a 30,000 dret LOSS. That being said, various lords do have special rewards if they are seeking a specific piece. I am not aware of anyone possessing the silver armor, so likely it would just be the standard reward, plus if a Spark of Suria captures it, they would likely be able to keep it. The council cares little for who possesses it as long as it is a Spark of Suria.”
“That seems dumb. That would be a massive loss.” Val exclaimed, disappointed.
“As I said, no such mission is planned, and it will likely just be passed on to the hunters in case they happen to come across the mercs on a good day. A single gauntlet is not going to convince any of the investors to fund such a mission. The only rewards would be if the whole merc company was destroyed and there was enough armor and weaponry to sell to make up the difference. “
“Are there any other missions that I might be able to take?”
“There is a mail run going to Emre, another to Vintas and one to Durres.”
“Durres is one I can take. It would be good to be back and see Maggie.” Val said, the dejection obvious in her voice.
“Stop by and see the quartermaster. He has been griping about a lack of Shadow plasma so perhaps he will help make the trip more profitable.” Lauren offered.
Val doubted that, but perhaps a merchant was due that would clean out his supply.
She wandered off to find Lorenzo, and see what she could be on the lookout for on this excursion.
Lorenzo was all too happy to send her out. Apparently, a messenger had arrived to inform him that a merchant would be arriving in two weeks, and would be willing to buy every Scath plasma he had available. There were also a few requests for the scavengers.“I have a request from a spark lord of Ellesmera for a statuette that he believes was stolen from a museum in Parcia. It is supposed to be of Raphael, one of the great one hundred Spark blessed. According to the records, he was a great healer.”“I thought the 100 sparks were the rulers in Krellis. Didn’t they all survive the great war?” Val asked.“It is true that the council of thirteen is made up of elite-level sparks. It is believed that they are of the 100. However, we are only sure about forty-two of the 100. The other elite sparks may have been destroyed or lost to the other 8 realms.”“The leader of the thirteen rotates power between five elite Sparks every twelve years and they are five of the strongest known sparks. We are
The four day trip passed without much incident. As they neared the city, Alexa leaned out the carriage window, watching the scenery change. “So, dockside first? What that like?” “It’s docks.” Cade said dryly. Val shrugged in her seat next to Alexa, “It’s salty compared to the mountains. Its been years since I’ve been back. But there is a library, and you have to try Maggie’s cinnamon rolls.” As their carriage crossed the river and homesteads began to appear long the road, Val began to smell the strong salt air she had nearly forgotten about. As the port came into sight, the small of rotting fish also became apparent. She had forgotten about that part. “AW, GAH! It stinks down here! How did you stand it?” Alexa said, her nose scrunching as she closed the window. It didn’t help the smell much, and Val joined her friend in covering her nose with a rag to try to quell the stench. “Please tell me we are not staying down here?” Alexa asked, a look of horror crossing her face at the noti
(Later that evening) “No.” Cade said dryly as they sat around a table in the common room of the inn. “No? you seriously are not going to help?” Val asked incredulously. “Look, I get it. Forced labor and all that is bad. I agree. But we are-,” Cade paused and glanced around, likely checking if anyone was listening. Lowering his voice he said, “Val, we are surian. Most of these people don’t even believe our nation exists. It is only our luck that the only thing making us really out of place is our silver blood. We cannot interfere that much.” Val glared at him, “It’s not like we are attacking a city of innocents. I am talking about unseating a nest of filth. We would be doing the people of Parcia a service. And if you don’t want to do all that, then at least help me get Emma out.” Alexa had been quiet this whole time but finally broke her silence, “Val, I am all for helping you get this girl out of that situation. but I have to ask, to what end?” “What do you mean, to what end? To
The next day, Cade and Alexa split off to find more information about the hosts of the auction and to see if they could find an inventory list. Val decided to take this time to acquire supplies and see if she could find where Emma was being held. Even if she didn’t have a full plan now, she would get the information she needed to form one later. The first Jewelry shop she found had silver, but gold was scarce. The proprietor was kind enough to point her in the direction of the largest dealer in the city. The sign out front read Winston Song Jewlery.Val made her way inside and a tall blonde introduced herself as Nanaka Song. ‘How can I help you today?”Val proceeded to hand over a list of metals and quantities she would need.“I see. Are you wanting investment grade bars or jewelry made from these?”“Bars or cubes would work best.”“I understand. We have several investors who come here for such products, though, its rare to have someone as young as you looking for…” Nanaka paused as s
Val spent the next few days hunting Scath. This trip she had a huge quota. Not only would it take five units per Follower Spark she wanted to eventually create, but the Sigil Mark’s took two units. Val figured that should would likely need at least two full Follower Sparks to control a guild like Baltazar had suggested. But she would need at least five Sigil marks to tag each of the sect leaders, more if she intended for the whole gang to have them. Val sighed, this was already one trip that would drain most of her funds. Lorenzo had sent them with the typical supplies but with room and board already adding up and the metals she needed she had spent nearly one third of her entire savings, and there would be more expenses in the near future. 35 scath units just to square with Lorendo the units she had used at the fort, another 25 for future Follower needs, and then another thirty to forty to cover the costs on this trip. 100 Scath units in just a few days. Thankfully, the Shadows see
Val stumbled forward, catching herself right at the edge of the pool. She did her best to cover herself with her hands, but the thin fabric was not much to work with. Barclay and Brant eyed her appreciatively. “Well, if she is pure, that white hair is certainly unique. Thank you, Weylan. Remind me later to leave you a bonus for this one,” Brant called, dismissing Weylan. Val wasn’t sure if she was lucky or cursed to have the Razor’s Edge’s leadership right here. She barely registered Barclay moving towards her until his powerful frame raised out of the water as he reached for her. She averted her gaze but it put her off balance as he pulled her into the pool. The water was only a few feet deep but she tripped on the stair and landed against his damp chest. As she tried to regain her balance she tried to push off his rock hard form, and realized her face was way too close to his manhood. “Eager, eh? Well, I do like a woman who initiates.” His thick arms wrapped around her and pulled
Valkyrie came awake to a dull throbbing in her head. The dark room smelled of piss and vile mixed with stale musty air. There was indeed someone sobbing nearby and Val wondered who it might be. She rolled over, attempting to come to her knees but the world spun as she moved, and she nearly puked her guts up. She slowly made it to a seated position, her head still swimming through a foggy haze.“I thought you said the pain would be blocked.”No one answered her. she belatedly realized that if this was what she was dealing with while aided by the spark, she would be in real trouble if she didn’t get some Scath units soon.“Emma?” she called softly. She desperately wanted to use her thermal vision but it would take precious scath units that she didn’t have to spare right now.“Val?” Her voice trembled with the single syllable.“Emma! I am going to get you out!”“Val, how are you going to do that? They got you too! The last girl that managed to break the locks was caught and never came
Val stared at the wall for a long moment, the reality of the past few hours not yet registering. She just felt numb. “I had to do something. I had to find Emma.” “If you had waited, or come to us, we could have gotten her out,” Cade said. “You told me we couldn’t do anything!” Val fumed. “The whole reason I went off to find her on my own is because you said no!” “Val, if you had been listening to our plan, we already had a way to get all the girls out that would have wrecked the gang and left the Song family alone. It was all worked out. It still is, except you are now wanted by every member of the Razor’s edges. We cannot get you close to the auction because they will have eyes everywhere.” “You had a plan?” “Yes, Val. We had a plan, and it included you and your friend,” Cade said. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Rest for now. Tomorrow is the auction and we have a lot to do. Alexa and I will go on a Scath hunt tonight. Whi
