Despite all that Darius had experienced in his life, he had never licked another person’s feet, not even his Father. But here his stepmother was telling him to bend and lick her feet.

Darius’ face turned red in anger and embarrassment. How dare she! He had been taught by his mother several times to never bow down to anybody who wanted to humiliate him no matter what he had to suffer. So it was already ingrained in him to never bring himself too low for anybody.

Immediately he stood up straight in anger as he glared at his stepmother and spat angrily. “Keep your money to yourself! I would never humiliate myself in front of you for any reason!”

Instead she mocked him with a sinister laugh and asked him. “So how do you plan to treat your poor mother? I think you’re just so proud that you’ll rather see that bitch die than beg for help”

“There’s no one who can help you Darius but I and my husband. But you’re too proud to beg. Since you don’t really want the money get the hell out of my house and go to your poor mother. Maybe when you see her again you’ll come back to your senses”

Darius gritted his teeth and looked at his father who was still eating his oysters without a care for what his wife was going through. Ever since that day 12 years ago that he brought this woman to their house, he had stopped caring about him and his mother like they didn’t exist. It was like this mistress had him under some influence.

Darius and his mom had hoped that he’ll eventually change into the loving husband and father he was before but after 12 whole years nothing had changed. And now his Father had practically disowned him by denying him his inheritance and passing it to this witch’s son instead!

Darius’ heart stung from the pain of betrayal by his father and how his stepmother humiliated him. He knew that even if he licked her leg she would just humiliate him more without actually giving him anything. Right now his mind was in a bit of a mess but he struggled to gather himself together and think.

There was nothing here for him anymore, his father would not pay he or his mother any attention and he would just waste his time. He turned around and started walking back the door through which he came in.

His stepmother burst out into evil laughter as she saw that he had given up. “Yes, dog, go back to that bitch. I hope you follow her to hell and stop disturbing my family and my son’s future!”.

She hissed as she banged the door behind Darius who had just stepped outside the door. But Darius had not completely gone out so the door clicked on the middle finger of his left hand that was still at the door frame.

His stepmother knew what happend and laughed loudly again as she returned to what she was doing.

Darius’ hand stung and he pulled it out the door to hold it. He grunted a low grunt so he won’t attract attention to himself. The finger was red and was almost bleeding. But he put it in his mouth as he began to think again. A few drops of tears roles down his face to his chin but he didn’t make any sound.

He quickly wiped it off and started walking absentmindedly. He then began to think of lending from those loan sharks so he would be able to treat his mother. Even though one loan would not be enough, he would have to take multiple loans so he could cover all the expenses. It was just that he would have to slave away for the rest of his life to pay the debt. But still, he was ready to make that sacrifice for his mother.

Just as he was still thinking, his phone rang and when he picked it up he saw an unknown number calling him. He wanted to dismiss the call but his gut told him that it would benefit him so he stared at the phone for a brief moment before he picked up the phone.

He spoke without any interest whatsoever. “Hello.”

“Hello, is this Mr Darius Featherington?” It was the thick voice of a grown man that spoke.

Darius anxiously replied. “Yes that’s me. Can I help you?”

‘Is it the doctor calling me again?’

The male voice paused for some seconds before speaking again. “My name is Maxwell, butler of the McArthur family. I’m speaking to you on behalf of Sir McArthur, your grandfather.

Darius frowned. He was in no mood for any call pranks at this time. Surely someone with this kind of elderly voice should be a responsible man with something tangible to do.

He wanted to end the call without insulting the man. Darius was a well mannered man to an extent.

“Excuse me sir, I think you’re making a big mistake. I think you got the wrong person.”

But the man spoke again. “Isn’t your mother Alice McArthur?”

“McArthur?” He mumbled to himself.

‘Is this an actual prank?’ He thought’

It was at this time that he began to focus. His mother’s name was really Alice but then he had never heard her surname that she got from her own father. He never even knew her father or mother. He was still in a daze as he was thinking without saying anything when the man spoke up again.

“It has come to our attention that Alice is sick and we have paid all her medical bills. You only need to attend to your mother until she fully recovers and then we’ll come to pick you up when you’re ready to meet your grandfather.” He took another pause for Darius to talk but Darius could not say anything again. What the hell was going on?

The man seeing that Darius did not respond said..

“You’re his only heir and he’s been waiting for you a long time. I need to meet you to have a discussion with you.”

Darius was still stunned to stupor.

“I will give you some time to think. A text will be sent to you with the proof of everything I’ve said and a number to use to reach me when you’re ready to talk or if you need anything. I’m also your personal butler from today. Have a great day sir. I’ll be expecting your call.

And he hung up.
