Red tried to distract Ronan with random tidbits of information on whatever they passed, but Ronan was more interested in the fact Red had shrugged off diving from a large cliff, and mentally debilitated by the shock still spiking through his brain. The panic hadn't kicked in, allowing mind to focus on the new cache of questions racing through his mind, including Red's successful jaunt at destroying the laws of physics, and reasons for kidnapping him of all people.
The two had been walking along the edge of the forest for what felt like hours, taking into account the two stars' abilities to elongate the passage of time with the scorching energy they produced. Red had been humming 'It's a Small World After All' to himself for the past hour, and the constant repetition of it was wearing Ronan's patience dangerously thin. He couldn't believe how long the forest was and why they couldn't just walk through it, rather than looping around the thing, but Red was content on avoiding doing so for reasons Ronan didn't feel like questioning.
The walk was doing an excellent job in draining Ronan's energy, so he nearly walked right into Red when he stopped short a few inches from a large white stone. Ronan snapped out of his day dreamy state and looked over at the smooth, glossy white rock.
"Ahah!" Red knelt down and picked up a random stick. He brushed off the specks of dirt clinging to it and presented it to Ronan. "Make it disappear."
"Make it what?" Ronan grabbed the scraggly piece of wood, it had a tinge of purple to it's bark and the few leaves that clung to its tiny arms were transparent silver teardrops. It's uniqueness was captivating, but the source of the beautiful branch was nowhere to be seen.
"Turn it invisible." He touched the tip of the stick and muttered. The stick instantly melded with the scenery around it, turning into a transparent distortion, like a crystal clear icicle was now sitting in Ronan's grasp. Red withdrew his hand and the stick regained its color. "Just think about turning it invisible and say spindrell, it should work after a bit."
Ronan beheld the stick, it couldn't hurt to try, he thought, picturing the invisible stick in his mind. He focused on the stick like it was a bullseye. "Spindrell." He stared at it for a bit, but nothing happened.
Hesitant as to if he'd pronounced it right, Ronan repeated himself, the stick wavered slightly, but to his disappointment it didn't take on a transparent form. He commanded it yet again, and a chunk of fatigue weighed down his senses, draining the stick of its rich brown and leaving a hazy white translucent cloud.
When Red viewed the outcome of Ronan's attempts he laughed. "Wow, you suck at focusing."
"I'm surprised something happened," Ronan said, inspecting the blurred images through the stick. Jeremy looked at the stick impassively then rubbed his head against Ronan's pant leg, sending a burst of energy that crawled through him, instantly turning the stick invisible. He eyed his cat questionably, and Jeremy chirped. "So how exactly is this possible?"
"Lumience. It's a substance that takes energy in exchange for doing your bidding to the best of its abilities." He picked up a rock and levitated it in the air. "Except different people can specialize in different functions it holds, like you suck at illusionary skills, but you might be good at gravitational."
"So it's basically magic."
Red made an iffy motion with his hand. "Not quite. Lumience is like the air around us... comes out of the ground sometimes. It's psychologically prgrammable if you're indigenous. Magic comes out of certain people and creatures like blood, and it's a lot more potent. They're only similar because they can both use a language, kind of like programming, for better control. Earthlings think they're the same because it's earth. Boring." He let out a heavy sigh from the long explanation, then looked at his floating pebble and dropped it. "Some creatures can use magic, but it's best to avoid those ones." He poked Ronan's hazy branch so it faded back to its original state. "Don't use it for too long or it'll sap you dry, and make a hangover seem like a vacation."
He walked over to the glossy white stone and put his hand on it, whispering a small phrase, and the stone gave off a soft illuminating light. Loud snaps and rustles erupted from the forest as the trees and shrubs came to life, shuffling away to create a broad path paved with mossy green stones.
Ronan looked down the seemingly endless path that formed, cautiously approaching it, but Red stopped him before he could step in. He gave Ronan a serious look, "No matter what happens, do not step off the path, the forest can get a little grumpy when its trails aren't followed."
Ronan acknowledged Red's warning and followed him into the forest. After they entered the plants moved until they regained their previous placement, blotting out their exit with a mass of towering trees.

The forest creatures stared at the group of peculiar things travelling through their domain. Some recognized Red and his companion Ragdoll, but Ronan and Jeremy struck them as new faces, and they couldn't help but weigh their judging eyes on the foreigners. The friendlier creatures took this chance to become acquainted with what they saw as a new batch of friends, scurrying to meet Ronan. A mass of curious creatures quickly formed, and Ronan became especially nervous about the large scaled stag stalking them down the path with unknown intent.
The animals were overly friendly around them, and this wasn't something Ronan was accustomed to. Red explained their welcoming behaviour was caused by the forest, since it only allowed safe passage to those carrying good intentions, but it didn't make Ronan any more relaxed as he looked down at the golden lizards circling his feet.
The stag caught up and squeezed between the two, flaunting a coat of glistening emerald scales, and a thick set of white branching antlers rested on its strong brow. Red dipped his head respectfully to the beast and rubbed its snout.
It turned its golden eyes to Ronan and snorted, sending a puff of hot air into his face. Ronan copied Red's actions and inclined his head. A large pink scar running across its black nose caught his gaze, but it was only for a moment until the beast turned its head and purposely clocked him on the side of the face.
"He's a Vidaean, they're caretakers of the forest." Red said, picking up a large silver spider before it crawled down his shirt. He was being hoarded by an entourage of welcoming creatures as well. "I hope you're good with handling large vicious beasties by the way."
"What?" Ronan replied, contemplating if he'd caught Red's mutter properly. Vicious beasts? Who in their right mind is okay with handling vicious beasts? He thought, the stabbing concern blooming in his stomach again. Red kicked him off a cliff but Ronan was still following him around, maybe he wasn't currently in his right mind. Be it the enchanting forest, or a strange case of Hollywood Stockholm Syndrome, Ronan knew his reaction was weird, but couldn't bring himself to act differently.
Red pointed ahead to the end of the path where the forest cleared out. "We're almost there, just remember lumience can sometimes work if you imagine what you want it to do, but... Be careful." He waved goodbye to the Vidaean as they approached the end. "and if you don't like it here, I can just brainwash you and send you back like nothing happened."
Ronan gave him a weird look. "Here? What exactly is here?"
Red smiled and walked on silently until they were released from the shady clutches of the forest, and it cleared out into a flat landscape of short, well kept grass.
In the middle of the clearing was a grand palace, made of lucent metals and stones that curved and arched to create a glimmering building of pure aesthetic beauty. No walls surrounded the structure, giving it an open armed appeal, and the blue sky dancing upon its reflective surface leaked a mellow blue that pleased the eyes. The forest made a large ring around its perimeter and some of the ancient trees stood higher than even the tallest peak of the structure. Ronan couldn't keep his eyes off the masterpiece, it beamed like a succulent candy being dangled in front of his face. It was astonishing.
"Welcome to Cobalt..." Red said, as he strolled towards the building.
After taking in the appearance of the castle, the idea of the situation being from Ronan's tricky imagination haunted him yet again, and slowly, with every ludicrous event that occurred, it was taking over the reality he was now experiencing. This time Ronan found himself hoping it was reality, for he knew all too well the torture even the sweetest dream brought, enticing one with its irresistible opportunities that all seem to be real while sleeping, until waking you moments before the revealing ending you sought so hard to experience.
But Ronan could feel the breeze blowing on his face, and smell the crisp outdoor air. He could hear the sounds of the forest, filled with the calls of unimaginably unique creatures, and most of all, he could see it all. The trees, the strange sky, the soft grass, the wicked amazing building, his suspicious cat, and his crazy guide Red. He felt the aura of reality around him, resting his rampant thoughts. He wanted to see it for himself, the end this path lead to; and it all started here.
Maria stood patiently outside two large silver doors. She awaited the moment they would open, for her sister was behind them, doing who knows what in her test. Maria was a respectable third year who stood above ordinary, but nowhere near prodigious, except in her skill set. However, her sister Veronica was cause for concern, with her mischievous experiments and lack of taking the time to hone any of her skills. The thought of her being put in a rank below her potential was haunting at the least, it would do anything but improve her attitude. She was surprised the room hadn't burst into a fit of uncontrollable flames by now, which was good. She watched the huddles of people traverse the large lobby room; most of them were chatty teenagers, with the exception of a few parents and teachers that scoured the crowds for punishable misbehaviour. The lobby room itself was substantial in surface area and height, but didn't come close to comparing with the main chamber in size, or beauty. The b
Ronan stood silently in the presence of what appeared to be friends of Red, contemplating possible opportunities to escape the place, or at least Red.He couldn't however... After uncovering Red's true intentions, and realising how stupidly calm he was about being on another planet. Ronan had attempted one of his escape plans, but no sooner than a few seconds into initiating it, Ronan found he was frozen; in a sense that the only things he could move were his eyes. What's worse was Red gained control of his motions, and marched him right into the building with ease. Ronan couldn't call for help nor flee as he followed Red through crowds of young teenagers, most of them appearing happy and full of conversation that they distributed with their company, but he couldn't bring himself to understand the source of their enthusiasm.Red had walked him across a large hall made of crystalline walls, lined with multiple pictures of strange armour-clad people. Some rode fearsome beasts, while oth
The second molve turned to the boy, that had obliviously collided with its behind. He was slumped against the wall, clutching a sharp object in one hand, the other holding the back of his head while squinting in undeniable pain. The sight produced a slice of pity, and the molve couldn't help feeling sorry for him, so instead of ending the test at that moment it backed off a few feet to growl threateningly in his direction, giving him a chance to get his head back in the game.Ronan pulled himself to his feet, looking at his palm now streaked with fresh blood. The molve barked and snarled viciously as he heard the responding howls of the other five. He turned to face his enemy, it was a fortress, plated with raw impregnable stone stretching all the way from its head to the tip of its clubbed tail. Except it's broad chest, where its stone skin cracked open to reveal that beautiful orange light, the core of its animation, its weakness. At least, that was what he hoped.Ronan's dagger war
The molve leapt for Ronan's exposed back as he tried to flee, barely missing the tail end of his uniform. The next visible turnoff was too far away, Ronan could feel the wind from the molve's front paws as it caught up to him. He was going to get caught. Then he realized his situation. It was a violent, life threatening, version of tag, and in tag, the chaser is always at the mercy of the chased. He took a sharp turn straight into the wall, the molve bounding past him and charging face first into another wall, before realizing its victim had escaped. The molve snarled at its prey that had cheated it of its victory, and shook the loose stones from its head; it was done toying with its target.Patting down his flattened pockets, Ronan fished out his last dagger. He still had the stealthy sword fastened to his back, but after seeing the molves, he didn't feel like a long swinging weapon would do the trick. The molve leered at Ronan, walking away from the cratered wall and taking him by s
"Congratulations, you completed the exam with five minutes and thirteen seconds left." The girl spoke, echoing throughout the clearing like an intercom.Ronan shook off the pile of rocks and sat up. The whole maze melted away, revealing a grey undercoat that enveloped Ronan and his cat. Small details and colors tinted the grey, morphing it into a bright room. The same grey room he'd been forced to enter by Red."Thank God..." He sighed."Unfortunately, I am having troubles in giving you a proper rank. So am I permitted to ask you a few questions?""Rank?" Ronan's tone twisted to caution, still shaking with fear. "Sure...""How much experience with lumience do you have?"Ronan took a moment to remember what lumience was. "I jumped off a cliff without going splat... And I turned a purple stick translucent..."The girl chuckled cynically, continuing with her questions. "What is your fighting style?""Fighting style?""Yes, I found yours odd. In a sense of your recklessness and extreme pa
Draven, Veronica, and Maria watched as the quiet boy Red had brought with him, grabbed him by the collar and threw him up against the wall. "You know damn well where!" He tightened his grip as Red slowly shrank into his shoulders like a turtle. "Back where I didn't have to worry about rhinoceros sized stone wolves trying to flatten me! Or vampire bats trying to eat me!" He snapped, feeling the heat rising in his head, and the constant beating in the back of his skull grew again. "Wow he is stronger than he looks." Draven cooed turning his gaze to Ronan. "What? Didn't do so hot on the exam?" He glared at Draven and allowed Red to drop from his grasp. "Okay, let's calm down." Red said patting his shoulder with a cheery smile. "I thought you'd like the exam. What rank did you get?" "First you'll promise to take me back to Earth, then I'll show you that stupid rank," Ronan snapped, sticking his hand out for a deal sealing handshake. Red stared at Ronan's hand for a couple seconds the
Red and Maria walked side by side up a long twisted stairway. A soft, royal blue carpet ran down the steps, tightly fitting into every groove with flawless accuracy. Polished stone rails lined the stairs on either side, making sure a clumsy student wouldn't end up taking a detour whilst traversing the staircase. After reaching the top, the duo stopped dead in front of a large set of ebony doors. Two fearsome dragons, frozen in action were carved on their metal surface, each defending their own luxurious black door knob.Red gave the doors a pouting look, and approached them dejectedly, followed by Maria who looked on at Ray like an overseer. He grabbed one of the doorknobs after a spell of hesitation, and gave it a hard tug before it decided to slide open. Beyond the parameters of the thick metal was a broad room, dimly lit by the light flowing through the wall sized windows opposite of them. Large wooden shelves heaped with dusty books and strayed cobwebs lined the other walls, barel
"Here we are." Draven announced, motioning towards a doorless room full of students.Veronica smiled with forced politeness, and went through the empty doorway. "Thank you for taking us here, we don't need your assistance anymore.""Harsh." Draven folded his arms and leaned against the wall in relaxation. "Sorry ma'am, I'll be waiting here. Don't wanna be facing the wrath of your sis like Red is."Veronica rolled her eyes and looked at Ronan. "Come on, follow me."The room had the same same stony texture as most of the building's interior, but Ronan noticed the red carpet paving the lobby and main hallways didn't reach into the other rooms, or smaller corridors. This room didn't have skylights either, since there was another level above. Instead it was lit with multiple floating blue balls of energy.Veronica walked to the other end of the room, where adults in formal wear sat behind large wooden desks. Whenever a teenager approached them, they would greet them with a smile, take thei
