Ronan gulped, flexing his palm that was laced with the sticky hold of the strange black liquid, a wobbly ritual circle painted to his skin so he could hold Phantom's rock and tap into his assistance. He drew his gaze to the chalked circle he was standing in, identical to the one on his palm and the one Puff obediently sat in, all of them laced with indecipherable runes.

With a heavy sigh to relax his jittering heart, he focused on inspecting the Zodraic Battery's ritual circle, vast and complex with a swath of details to draw his focus.

Phantom took one last look at everything to ensure it was perfect, before cracking his knuckles. "Let's begin."

Ronan grabbed the piece of paper and read it over in his head before saying anything. "Silunas rictarun ilmnavrus cafktarinthuros, lorlempxita kelzhantrilo limnari."

The lines of chalk glowed, and the entire atmosphere in the room became heavy, prompting him to grab Phantom's rock and keep it in the stretch of ink. "Say it again."

"Make sure you get that off your hand as well," Phantom said, motioning to the black scribbles littering Ronan's palm like fresh blood after a murder."Yeah I know, there isn't exactly a bathroom down there," he replied, hiding the mark in his pocket with a sour frown and closing up the secret secret room.As he went for the stairs a strange vibrating sensation rattled at his wrist, causing him to jump and feel around for his phone. The box remained lifeless in his pocket however, coaxing him to lift his sleeve and stare at the little shaking sender.Ronan blinked in confusion. "Why's it doing that?"Phantom was equally perplexed by the bracelet, craning over Ronan's shoulder to inspect it. "Is there a button somewhere to stop it?"The bracelet continued to vibrate as Ronan looked at it from every angle for a button, the silver bracelet completely bare of any bumps or switches. It persisted, growing more restless by the second, until Ronan poked the centre of it, silencing it with a s

Veronica lingered by the main entrance, half in a conversation with her friends as she skimmed the perimeters. In or out, Ronan would come through that front entrance eventually. He had been missing all morning. When a patch of unkempt black hair passed her, she secured her target, throwing his name to his back as he turned around in bewildered confusion. A smile tugged her cheeks as his silver eyes dimmed in disappointment at the sight of her. "Truvius was looking for you." "Yeah I know," Ronan replied, sliding his hand deeper into his pocket. She caught the motion, and the small strings of cobwebs kissing his shoes, closing in on her prey with an innocent charm. "So where did you go when you got up so early?" "Outside, for a walk." Lying. She watched as he made his way towards the door, rushing to his side with a grin. "And you're going back outside?" "I came from breakfast, why do you care?" The amusement grew on Veronica's face as they approached the open doors. "I guess w

Veronica froze at the doorway, registering the chalked circles before the dim lighting could even disturb her. She was expecting a ghost, or maybe even a secret hobby Ronan was using the room for.Her lip twitched in a mix of fear and relent. This technically was a hobby. She paced herself, slowly closing her mouth when she realised it had been hanging and eyeing Ronan with a shaking calm. "So... was this here when you...?" She stopped when Ronan shook his head, a spike of irritation flaring from his grin. "Okay. So you—"Ronan didn't even let her finish. "Yup."Veronica's eye involuntarily twitched at the hint of power peppering Ronan's tone, prompting her to bring her own set of false confidence to the skit. With a wicked grin she walked up to the circles of chalk, pretending to admire their details. "So..." she started, her smile growing ever so slightly as she still caught a lick of worry plaguing Ronan. "What was it that you needed help with?"Ronan sucked in a deep breath, flick

Ronan finished the final lines, a crack of energy weighing on the room as the zapping bubble before them whitened with a thick cloud of mist. Unlike before, it didn't peak, ripping at every ounce of energy Ronan had while the ringing air ripped into his eardrums. He barely resisted the urge to drop Phantom's rock and clog his ears, watching Veronica and Puff, who had the luxury, with gritted teeth as he squeezed his eyes shut. And then everything stilled. The static energy flattened, a burst of bone chilling air blasting the room with a shattering crack as the bubble broke, casting the room into a thick and smokey fog. Ronan cracked his eyes open, coughing at the bitter tang in the air as he approached the source of Phantom's enthusiastic cheers."It worked!" Phantom cried again, bounding in circles around the small battery as he threw his arms up. "We didn't explode Ronan. We're alive!"A thin sheet of white mist still lingered on the floor, shrouding the small Zodraic battery as Ron

Truvius rubbed his eyes, clenching his jaw to keep a yawn from escaping as he blankly stared at the text of his book. He didn't know when Ronan planned to wake up, and not wanting to miss his chance at taking a step closer in debunking the mystery of his roommate, he hadn't slept a wink. A shuffle broke his dreamy trance. Ronan was shifting in his sheets with a tired stretch. This was it. Truvius straightened, quietly placing his book to the side as Shriek waddled off his pillow to hop onto Ronan's night stand, two sets of eyes drilling into the drowsy teen as he leaned up. "Morning," Truvius blurted, a delayed smile curving on his face as Ronan struggled to register his roommate, giving him enough time to notice a stretch of bandage covering his hand. "Sleep well?" Truvius kept back a grimace as Ronan scrunched his brow in confusion. That sounded creepy. He waited for his roommate to lazily slip out of his covers, grabbing Shriek before the bird could fly at Ronan's exposed ba

The crunching leaves filled the forest, and Truvius' mind as he watched his boots crumble the dried scales to ashen shards. He had stuck to matching Ronan's pace, but every attempt at catching his roommates attention bounced off his forwards drawn glare. He wasn't enjoying his company one bit, and Truvius couldn't blame him. With a discomforted sigh Truvius glanced over his shoulder at Veronica for a hint, his pace slowing as the red head nudged her chin for him to join her side a couple meters back. When he'd melded himself away from Ronan's side without being overly suspicious, he stopped in wait for Veronica to come upon his side, matching her casual stroll as Cinders smoky aroma struck him."You were trying to catch him too?" he whispered, giving Veronica a timid cringe as she rolled her eyes again. "Waiting like that to trap him isn't a very effective method you know.""Yeah, and following him around the school all day like a creeper isn't one either," she growled, cautiously wat

Ronan couldn't believe his luck. A tense truce with Veronica had willed her to play Truvius like a puppet and although he hadn't caught a syllable of what she'd told his roommate, Truvius had followed her to shop for clothing without a word of protest. This left him with a few timid glances and priceless window of privacy to remove the tattoo plaguing his palm.He pinched at the tight knot Veronica had made, cursing the rough fabric while he bit at the knot to loosen it. They were almost at the little shop, Ronan's boots carelessly clapping against the stretch of stone, while the luring scent of fresh food faded to a dingy tang of stale puddles and waterlogged vines. He liked the solitary chill alleys had; it sure beat the crap out of thick crowds of chattering students. He finally loosed the bandage, working at unwinding it while he cooked up a plan to get Luren not to talk about the symbol to anyone. A false life enchantment?Truvius couldn't shake the thought. Sure Ronan was odd, suspicious even, but a soulless battle puppet? He paid Veronica a quick glance, his fingers pressed with pain by the thick bags she'd asked him to hold for her. She thought it would be easier to catch Ronan off guard than stalk him all day.Maybe she had a rope or two loose in her head.Truvius held in a sigh as she appraised a row of scarves, she'd bought five already, and he could hardly tell the difference between them all. Nonetheless she squished it into one of the already packed bags lining his arms, waving him over to a row of food stands. It really was no wonder why the nobles that recognised her never took to swarming her, her spending habits certainly reflected a kingdom in the hole for debt."Want one?" Veronica said, pointing at a clean row of juice filled glasses.Truvius frowned at the offer. He could feel a dry stick to his throat, but had been entirely immobilised by the chains of fashion

But her gaze fell on the boy instead as he whispered a spell into his cupped hands, a small butterfly glowing with golden light fluttering from his palms and out the door. There was a small commotion as the guard to the left spoke with another one, two pairs of footsteps following the enchantment until they grew silent. The boy lead the mission, tiptoeing through the empty corridor until they rounded a corner to face two guards sitting at the end of the hall.Veronica swallowed her gasp, confused as the boy continued to lead her up to them. Chapter 119

Veronica sat on her bed, stuffed like a spring hen but still buzzing with birthday energy. She had only played with one of her gifts throughout the night, a dinged up wooden dagger that she'd managed to hold away from her mother until the gazes of the guests forced her to allow the gift to remain in her hands. She had looked for Mr. Bunny afterwards to show him her new prize, but Horus had informed her of his early departure. She knew that they had planned for today to be their last, but the disappointment lingered nonetheless. She still had one last gift she had hoped to give him.Veronica sighed, grabbing for a fairytale on her shelf instead of the books that had piled from Jackling's tutoring. She had gotten a few new stories to read Cinder before bed, but the phoenix had taken a particular liking to the golden lettering of one title."The Adventures of Locke Lanbrellhande..."She stopped at the small tap that met her ears, glancing at the side of her bed where Cinder was still per

It was all wrong. The corridor was too tight. The guards were too close. Too tall.It was too cold, suffocating. He was meant to be in the room to at least give him some time to think."Are you alright?"The boy snapped to the voice. What was a blink to him, was long enough to land him on the ground, palms to the floor to keep his entire body from shaking. He didn't know how long he had blanked out for, but the king had taken a knee to come closer to him, washed with concern as a few of the surrounding guards hovered over the scene to see where they could offer help."Come lad, can you stand?"His gut twisted at the way he tried to help him up, but with Vera bracing his other side he couldn't very well squirm away from the king. He doubted that he'd even have the energy if he decided to. But he knew now with the scene he'd caused that he would have to respond with more than a nod.Cilvren would have had his translational enchantments up to date, but there was a standing risk of a few

    Chapter 117.2

It had been a little over an hour since the nosy boy named Horus had been dragged off. But the silence finally let him work without prying eyes. The size of the pants had allowed him to stitch pockets inside, just big enough for a dagger to hide beneath the folds on either side. Horus had likely thought he was being smart when he hid his old clothes and daggers from him, but the presence of magic in the air always escaped Lumer senses. He pulled them out of a pile of blankets, finding the rest of his trinkets and the invitation to shove in his pockets. With some hesitation, he bounced the black spool of string in his palm, staring at the shiny silver needle and pocketing the whole thing. He had to be preapred to use anything.Hopefully Veronica wouldn't miss the small thing, nor the black cloak he found in her wardrobe.Blue crystals twinkled at his fingertips as he traced his hand down the cloak. He just needed to be invisible from a distance for a few minutes. Most of the guards had

    Chapter 117

It was the end of the painfullest slumber party in history.Veronica had exorcised her birthday immunity to raid a closet of nearly all its bedsheets, and prop them up as a haphazard blanket fort in her room. It was the perfect mess for the boy to hide in when someone walked in without knocking, but also a tight fit when it came time for sleeping.Veronica had been ushered away at the crack of dawn for the maids to prepare her outfit, which left the boy in Horus' care. He had to get the two of them ready, and hope to the gods that the boy picked up at least half of the common Latos mannerisms he had taught him. But all of that was to the side as Horus stared at the boy tucked into a corner of the blanket fort.Horus didn't know what was weirder. The way he held a few flowered bauble pins out the side of his mouth as he sewed, or the fact that he looked like a seasoned seamstress as he cinched the waist on a pair of pants Veronica had swiped from Adrian. The cut was tall enough for him

The door opened, the boy squatting lower into the tub as Veronica peeked in. She flaunted the tiny beginner's book like a sack full of slivs, tiptoeing up to the tub with a devilish smile."I found it.""You don't have to whisper, we put up a sound block enchantment.""You guys have to teach me!" Veronica piped. She quickly landed on the bar of soap in Horus' hands, putting two and two together at the suds popping in the boy's hair. "Horus, that's soap.""Yeah...""That won't do, it makes your hair all icky." She grabbed a tray full of mysterious pots, smearing at least five of the creams together before her mysterious concoction was complete. No amount of dodging could save the boy from being her test dummy, but the smug way he simply let Veronica rub the bubbly concoction into his hair irked Horus to no end. She grabbed some more of the secret spread, only stopping when not a single black hair could be send through the froth of rose bubbles on his head."You're never going to smell

Veronica surged with confidence, a top and trousers that she had stolen from her brother's room, as well as one red envelope embellished with gold trimmings hiding between two books she had snatched from house Acadrius' library. She had the best idea to get Mr. Bunny safely out of the castle, and perhaps have him earn her parent's favour for a second visit. Her birthday celebration was in two nights. She had been lucky enough to find the spare invites before Ambelsine the records-keeper discarded them all. With the right clothes, he could easily blend with a room full of rich traders and nobility—and walk right out the front door. The guards paid her an odd look as she waved to them, the two at her door hesitating before allowing her into her room. She tried not to show a reaction. She had told Mr. Bunny not to make a sound, the guards would run in with a loud enough crash. But the room before her was empty, the small pile of books and food she had placed for him tidied up.She checke

    Chapter 116

Horus gazed up the hill of crimson steps to Veronica's room. He had counted to five hundred, and found Mr. Jackling well before he found Veronica. Apparently, while counting in a passage behind a closet, Horus had somehow climbed out a window. At least, that was Jackling's truth as he spent the better part of ten minutes going over the dangers of climbing onto roofs with himIt wasn't the first time Veronica had fed him an outlandish tale. But Horus ate up the blame every time. Veronica blabbered when she panicked, which meant she was hiding something. And that something was always better dealt with without the adults getting involved.Adrian would have more than a sharp word for him when he got back to that problem he'd up and abandoned. Things were simpler when the children of Acadrius weren't revulsed at the sight of one another.Horus made quick work of the stairs, fixing a lopsided shoelace and dusting his collar before gently knocking to call his presence. Veronica barreled through the halls, a shiny steel bowl tucked over her head as she carved a clear path to her destination.Adrian's room was so far from her own, privileged to the same hall as her mother and father's bedchambers, and nearly as grandois. When Horus and Adrian weren't scrapping in the courtyards, they were almost always doing something in there.Veronica confirmed her theory as she pressed her ear to the door, letting herself in at the sound of Horus' voice.Adrian was quick to call out her trespassing, stepping out of the hold he had Horus in to cross his arms and slap a sour glare on his face."Don't touch my door.""It's not yours," Veronica snipped back, clutching the bowl tighter as her brother took a challenging step. She quickly stole Horus' attention. "I need your help."Adrian scoffed at her caked shoes. "What's with all the mud? Mom's going to have a fit.""None of your business, I need Horus to help me.""We're practicing. Go get Maria or Jackling to help yo
