"It appears the Novan is not a fan of words. The six person party sent to peacefully speak with the creature were found three days ago at the meeting point they had established, butchered."

The word echoed in the room, made even louder by the silence that ensued.

His uncle didn't even have a remark.

"Knowledge of the meeting point was something only the peaceful party, the Novan, and the Grand Chancellor himself had knowledge of. Their deaths have been dated to the exact day of the meeting, but of course an investigation has been launched to figure out what happened." His gaze wandered to catch Ronan's. "After all, who could have committed such a horrific act?"

"Warlord's call for comment."

Ronan looked for the voice that had called from the second level of seats, staring in confusion at Cilvren as the hulking man stood to spotlight himself.

"Granted," the judge spoke.

"I hold theory on this matter," Cilvren announced, rubbing at his wiry beard as he stared down at Ronan in ponderment

Ronan hugged his uncle's side as they walked the small lobby. Refreshments were splayed across white clothed tables in a golden array of glass and juice, where most of the guests to his trial were hovering about to parch their thirst.Ronan was so focused on looking natural in the expensive setting that he was barely registering his uncle's muttering voice."Don't give that golem any information it can charge you with. In the eyes of a real trial, the rules of a warlord's court look like pocket notes."Ronan nodded. Listening or not, it was usually the only response he accepted. Right now a sense in his throat screamed louder than hearing, he hadn't talked much in the trial, but not using his mouth almost dried it faster. He grabbed one of the amber glasses, taking a large sip expecting a fruity concoction. But a bitter, sour, drying wave seized his tongue, his throat closing before the poison got any further with a suppressed gag.Elisious' raised eyebrow told enough, his uncle gentl

Veronica patiently stood at the bottom of a hill, waiting for Ronan to find his footing in the mesh of bushes, weeds, and tree trunks. With his sessions suspended, this was the last day he would be in Latos with Elisious. The last day for Veronica to show him a surprise.A sharp snap met her ears, Ronan sliding a few feet through a bush with an audible cry.Veronica sighed. She helped him down past the last rotting trunk, checking the woods one last time for any straying patrols that could spot them. The forest was royal property, but the last thing she wanted was word of her adventures reaching her father's ears. Especially when she was supposed to be getting ready for a farewell party with Ronan.Ronan checked his shoulder to see where Veronica was looking off to, a tepid smile greeting her with lackluster enjoyment. "Are we gonna be able to find our way back?""Done it a hundred times."He nodded to himself, sharing Puff's awkward confusion as they tried to make something of the wa

"You think it belongs to someone?" Ronan whispered, pulling Puff into his lap before the dragon went off to investigate."Latos is just full of projectiles, isn't it?" A voice growled, every hair on the back of Veronica's neck springing up when she realised it was from behind the tree. She kept Ronan in her corner vision as she slipped her fingers to her waist, an enchanted dagger hopefully enough to frighten the intruder and give them time to flee or call for help. But the voice found a familiar person as a man clad in red peeked out, rubbing the side of his head with a white mask to cover any expression he had on.Phantom.Ronan's mouth was hanging at the sight, his hold on Puff entirely loose as the dragon beheld him like a trick of the eye."Phantom?"Veronica thought fast, drawing her dagger as Phantom took his first step towards them. He stopped at the gesture, allowing her to step in front of Ronan without a fuss."Six dead Council members, ring a bell?""Veronica, he didn't do

Ronan heaved Puff into the air, his wings madly flapping for some lift to his pudgy body. After a few painful seconds, he managed a glide two heads higher than Ronan, his entire body flipping back to do a flip.Like the last five times his form broke as he was perfectly upside down, landing him on the plump white pillows covering half of Veronica's bed.Ronan smiled as he heard a muffled snort. "Wow, almost had it.""I'm serious, don't break anything."He glanced at the wooden door Veronica's voice had come from, A walk-in wardrobe on the other side that he'd assumed she'd simply gotten lost in for the last ten minutes."Pretty sure the party already started.""Yeah, just give me a minute."Ronan scooped Puff into his arms again, tossing him with and extra hard heave so he went into an immediate glide. Instead of watching another failed attempt, he turned to perusing Veronica's room. Tidy and nearly trinketless, with a delicate rouge theme that screamed the opposite of his friend. He

Ronan stood outside, everything had already been packed into his room, and the school was brimming with bright eyed first years taking their tours and running from whatever machinations Cobalt had in the entrance exam this year.It was a blessing in disguise. Unlike the first day he'd walked in, there wasn't a second year or higher around to recognise him, aside from a few Fairez Stellans that had too much respect for his uncle to think he was anything less than a golden statue. Still, while he waited for Truvius to finish up his shift as a group guide, he didn't want to risk being recognised, so he'd put on one of the few hoodies his uncle hadn't burned and pulled it over his head enough to hide all of his hair.It was hot as hell sitting on the steps of Cobalt's brand new entrance, but worth it."Permission to ask a question." Stella spoke, lifting into the air in front of his face.He scrunched his nose, taking to staring at the carved new steps of Cobalt. "What?""How do you desir

Ronan looked upon the familiar open clearing of the village, with the walled off houses and it's glistening crossbows catching the cold blue of the clear sky. The sight was a stark contrast from the last time he'd seen it. Roaring thunder and black skies were everywhere, as the only thing running through his head was a need to escape. Now he wanted to stay in its cold embrace, to hide from the scolding glances of his peers; all because in their perspective he made the wrong friend.Ronan gave himself four steps of solitude while he listened to Veronica and Truvius chatter with Stella. Veronica would sooner die than utter 'I love the Council' in any form, which only made her chummy attitude towards Stella as they shopped the town dry for clothes a greater mystery. She was in the middle of retelling Ronan's ghostly encounter in the secret room. The roll she was on looked like it would only stop when she spilled all her information on Phantom, or collapsed from the exhaustion of finding

Latos—Six years ago "Veronica, I told you he'll be back in a month," Queen Yesha sighed, looking down at her daughter, arms crossed and cheeks red with irritation in a way that was more cute than intimidating. Veronica hated it more than anything. The smile that always founds its way onto her mother's face irritated her to no end, but she couldn't help it if her tries at intimidation were always betrayed by her size. "You said daddy would be back last month, I kept track!" "Did you now?" Her mother mused, sharing the impressive feat through a glance at the spectating guards. Even with half their faces covered Veronica knew they had that same look on. Like she'd just remained five years old for the past four years. "Don't worry, he confirmed it with a letter this time." "Why doesn't daddy send me letters?" "Because daddy has very messy handwriting that only mommy can read." Veronica groaned in disapproval. There it was again. "Then can I go outside?" "No, Veronica." Mr. Lightwood stuck his arm out and muttered rastasnatch. A fireball slightly smaller than Ronan's usual quickly formed, whipping towards the wall with deadly ferocity and a thundering crack as splays of roaring flames licked at its surface.Ronan gaped at the cracked and smoking wall as Mr. Lightwood fixed his sleeves."That's the permitted intensity in tournaments. Your combat suit can take twice the impact.""That's insane," Ronan replied, looking back at Mr. Greine who hadn't a care for the sight. He'd only tagged along for a required follow-up on Ronan's lumience capabilities, and the roaring fireball couldn't pull the boredom out of his face."I thought it was a little harder than that." He looked back at the wall after Mr. Lightwood shook his head, writing something in the snakeskin journal he'd overstuffed with crinkled notes and Council papers. "Alright who did it?" Tella cut in, her voice turning to an unamused growl. "Lightwood, if you break another wall I'm calling Samant

But her gaze fell on the boy instead as he whispered a spell into his cupped hands, a small butterfly glowing with golden light fluttering from his palms and out the door. There was a small commotion as the guard to the left spoke with another one, two pairs of footsteps following the enchantment until they grew silent. The boy lead the mission, tiptoeing through the empty corridor until they rounded a corner to face two guards sitting at the end of the hall.Veronica swallowed her gasp, confused as the boy continued to lead her up to them. She heard a noise when they'd gotten close enough, one of the guards letting out a soft snore as his head drooped against the second guard using

  • Chapter 119

Veronica sat on her bed, stuffed like a spring hen but still buzzing with birthday energy. She had only played with one of her gifts throughout the night, a dinged up wooden dagger that she'd managed to hold away from her mother until the gazes of the guests forced her to allow the gift to remain in her hands. She had looked for Mr. Bunny afterwards to show him her new prize, but Horus had informed her of his early departure. She knew that they had planned for today to be their last, but the disappointment lingered nonetheless. She still had one last gift she had hoped to give him.Veronica sighed, grabbing for a fairytale on her shelf instead of the books that had piled from Jackling's tutoring. She had gotten a few new stories to read Cinder before bed, but the phoenix had taken a particular liking to the golden lettering of one title."The Adventures of Locke Lanbrellhande..."She stopped at the small tap that met her ears, glancing at the side of her bed where Cinder was still per

  • Chapter 118

It was all wrong. The corridor was too tight. The guards were too close. Too tall.It was too cold, suffocating. He was meant to be in the room to at least give him some time to think."Are you alright?"The boy snapped to the voice. What was a blink to him, was long enough to land him on the ground, palms to the floor to keep his entire body from shaking. He didn't know how long he had blanked out for, but the king had taken a knee to come closer to him, washed with concern as a few of the surrounding guards hovered over the scene to see where they could offer help."Come lad, can you stand?"His gut twisted at the way he tried to help him up, but with Vera bracing his other side he couldn't very well squirm away from the king. He doubted that he'd even have the energy if he decided to. But he knew now with the scene he'd caused that he would have to respond with more than a nod.Cilvren would have had his translational enchantments up to date, but there was a standing risk of a few

  • Chapter 117.2

It had been a little over an hour since the nosy boy named Horus had been dragged off. But the silence finally let him work without prying eyes. The size of the pants had allowed him to stitch pockets inside, just big enough for a dagger to hide beneath the folds on either side. Horus had likely thought he was being smart when he hid his old clothes and daggers from him, but the presence of magic in the air always escaped Lumer senses. He pulled them out of a pile of blankets, finding the rest of his trinkets and the invitation to shove in his pockets. With some hesitation, he bounced the black spool of string in his palm, staring at the shiny silver needle and pocketing the whole thing. He had to be preapred to use anything.Hopefully Veronica wouldn't miss the small thing, nor the black cloak he found in her wardrobe.Blue crystals twinkled at his fingertips as he traced his hand down the cloak. He just needed to be invisible from a distance for a few minutes. Most of the guards had

  • Chapter 117

It was the end of the painfullest slumber party in history.Veronica had exorcised her birthday immunity to raid a closet of nearly all its bedsheets, and prop them up as a haphazard blanket fort in her room. It was the perfect mess for the boy to hide in when someone walked in without knocking, but also a tight fit when it came time for sleeping.Veronica had been ushered away at the crack of dawn for the maids to prepare her outfit, which left the boy in Horus' care. He had to get the two of them ready, and hope to the gods that the boy picked up at least half of the common Latos mannerisms he had taught him. But all of that was to the side as Horus stared at the boy tucked into a corner of the blanket fort.Horus didn't know what was weirder. The way he held a few flowered bauble pins out the side of his mouth as he sewed, or the fact that he looked like a seasoned seamstress as he cinched the waist on a pair of pants Veronica had swiped from Adrian. The cut was tall enough for him

The door opened, the boy squatting lower into the tub as Veronica peeked in. She flaunted the tiny beginner's book like a sack full of slivs, tiptoeing up to the tub with a devilish smile."I found it.""You don't have to whisper, we put up a sound block enchantment.""You guys have to teach me!" Veronica piped. She quickly landed on the bar of soap in Horus' hands, putting two and two together at the suds popping in the boy's hair. "Horus, that's soap.""Yeah...""That won't do, it makes your hair all icky." She grabbed a tray full of mysterious pots, smearing at least five of the creams together before her mysterious concoction was complete. No amount of dodging could save the boy from being her test dummy, but the smug way he simply let Veronica rub the bubbly concoction into his hair irked Horus to no end. She grabbed some more of the secret spread, only stopping when not a single black hair could be send through the froth of rose bubbles on his head."You're never going to smell

Veronica surged with confidence, a top and trousers that she had stolen from her brother's room, as well as one red envelope embellished with gold trimmings hiding between two books she had snatched from house Acadrius' library. She had the best idea to get Mr. Bunny safely out of the castle, and perhaps have him earn her parent's favour for a second visit. Her birthday celebration was in two nights. She had been lucky enough to find the spare invites before Ambelsine the records-keeper discarded them all. With the right clothes, he could easily blend with a room full of rich traders and nobility—and walk right out the front door. The guards paid her an odd look as she waved to them, the two at her door hesitating before allowing her into her room. She tried not to show a reaction. She had told Mr. Bunny not to make a sound, the guards would run in with a loud enough crash. But the room before her was empty, the small pile of books and food she had placed for him tidied up.She checke

Horus gazed up the hill of crimson steps to Veronica's room. He had counted to five hundred, and found Mr. Jackling well before he found Veronica. Apparently, while counting in a passage behind a closet, Horus had somehow climbed out a window. At least, that was Jackling's truth as he spent the better part of ten minutes going over the dangers of climbing onto roofs with himIt wasn't the first time Veronica had fed him an outlandish tale. But Horus ate up the blame every time. Veronica blabbered when she panicked, which meant she was hiding something. And that something was always better dealt with without the adults getting involved.Adrian would have more than a sharp word for him when he got back to that problem he'd up and abandoned. Things were simpler when the children of Acadrius weren't revulsed at the sight of one another.Horus made quick work of the stairs, fixing a lopsided shoelace and dusting his collar before gently knocking to call his presence. A muffled shuffle was

Veronica barreled through the halls, a shiny steel bowl tucked over her head as she carved a clear path to her destination.Adrian's room was so far from her own, privileged to the same hall as her mother and father's bedchambers, and nearly as grandois. When Horus and Adrian weren't scrapping in the courtyards, they were almost always doing something in there.Veronica confirmed her theory as she pressed her ear to the door, letting herself in at the sound of Horus' voice.Adrian was quick to call out her trespassing, stepping out of the hold he had Horus in to cross his arms and slap a sour glare on his face."Don't touch my door.""It's not yours," Veronica snipped back, clutching the bowl tighter as her brother took a challenging step. She quickly stole Horus' attention. "I need your help."Adrian scoffed at her caked shoes. "What's with all the mud? Mom's going to have a fit.""None of your business, I need Horus to help me.""We're practicing. Go get Maria or Jackling to help yo
