The worms that had been touring from one wall to another got alerted when a human entered their zone, but his speed only confused the worms on both sides. Before they could accurately locate him, he entered the cave, and to his surprise, the entire path was filled with them ugly worms of all sizes and colors.
“Flying Flash Arts…” The red aura burst out of his whole body, especially at the soles of his feet like a spinning flower that lifted his feet off the ground without much noise. “Red Rush!” He forced his way through the sheer number of worms with pure strength, throwing the worms on either side or destroying them with his momentum alone.
After going for about two hundred meters and slicing dozens of worms in the process, he stopped. Though there were no worms behind him at the moment, there were still plenty of those hideous beings before him.
“Tch,” Edgar was panting, and the red energy around him dimmed a bit. Clearly, the lack of vital air was affecting him the most, but he kept on fighting the worms with bare hands and pushed his way through them. “I’ve never used this before to run in a straight line, but now it feels like I haven’t run that much. Is it because I had pushed my way through those worms?”
Slowly but surely, worms caught up to him from behind as well, but he wasn’t in a stopping mood either. He was a berserker at work. The more the worms pushed him, the more he fought back. Having been constantly outnumbered by the hairy soldiers during his training, the current situation didn’t intimidate him all that much.
One after another, the worms kept coming, and he kept kicking and tearing them apart. He punched some to death, squashed some heads to smithereens. He did many things, but one thing he didn’t do was hold back.
The worms were at perfect strength for him to fully exercise and extend his limits, especially given that he had to face so many of them. As minutes passed, he had lost count of the number of lives he lay waste in his wake.
Blood of all colors painted the tunnel, and soon, he reached the spot he was looking for. A huge chamber with so many big tunnels leading to different places. But what caught his eyes was the massive creature that was in the center of it, a fire-spitting black-scaled viper that was being eaten alive by the hundreds of worms that came from different tunnels. And what’s more, a big cloud-colored four-winged bird was caught in the viper’s mouth, and it was spitting lightning of different colors.
“I-Is it the thunderbird of the legends?” Edgar was slack jawed. Even though it had a gorgeous crystal and scary glowing eyes, judging by its colored feathers and size, it was probably not a fully grown one. “How did it get caught up in this place? Is there an exit nearby?” he got excited for many reasons.
He had been searching for stuff, but never came across anything valuable till now in this dark valley. Only death kept seeking him until now through various beasts. However, he suddenly came across two beasts with cores at a time, and moreover, they weren’t in a position to attack him. If this wasn’t a chance, what else would it be?
Still and all, having fought the worms, he knew his limits. Having used a lot of Red Drive already to get here, he had better take some rest. Especially given that he was tired, if he were to dare join the fight, the worms would simply overwhelm him with the number. Then again, the glowing yellow horn on the viper and the glowing blue horn on the thunderbird caught his eyes. So he didn’t run away yet. With enough rest, he could regain his speed.
He just watched and waited. This viper was much bigger than the first baby-horned viper he met on the first day inside the valley, but then again, bigger size didn’t necessarily mean that it was stronger.
Normally, the worms wouldn’t try going against vipers because their scales were too strong; however, this viper already seemed to be severely injured, so much so that it seemed as if someone slit open its back like a surgeon would cut open a person’s body with his knife. It was probably the work of the thunderbird’s talons. The worms just made use of that and drilled their way in through the gaps. Even though the viper was still fighting, it was easy to tell that it was only a matter of time that it lost. The worms still avoided the bird because it still released lightning and shocked them. However, the snake’s biting grip was no joke. Having suffered many wounds, the already-wounded thunderbird couldn’t do much.
Right next to the entrance, Edgar waited and waited, not even allowing himself to take a wink. Though he was in a dilemma as to which core he should go after, he eventually came to a conclusion. Going after both of them might prove too dangerous, so whichever beast would go down first, he would be going after that.
He had never seen such a mighty beast die, and it seemed like a spectacle. A big monster snake that could shake an entire state was now nearing its end because of a bunch of worms ganging up at an opportune time. The valley of vipers, or the valley of worms? Which one was an appropriate title for this place? Edgar couldn’t decide. One side had numbers. The other side had overwhelming strength. Both were threatening in their own right.
Soon, the giant snake hit the floor, and the impact made its fangs dig deep into the bird, causing its life to leave its body, too. In seconds, the commotion died down. So many worms were at work, but they made less to no sound.
The silence was so chilling, but the scenery, even more so.
Not wanting to throw up, Edgar didn’t look at the worms but rather looked at the snake’s head, fixedly at the horns, especially at the snake’s crystal.
“It’s at least the size of an arm. Am I supposed to take that whole thing? Fighting while carrying it won’t be convenient.” He looked at the bird, whose crystal was smaller. “This one’s better.”
As he was about to move, both crystalline horns leaked out vapors, and they shattered into pieces. “What?” Edgar’s jaw dropped faster than the speed with which the snake had hit the floor.
The snake’s crystal was huge.“It’s big as a lamb. Am I supposed to carry that big thing? Forget about convenience, fighting while carrying that will sure-fire get me killed. Wait, how am I supposed to eat that? Bit by bit?” He looked at the bird, whose crystal was smaller. “I should take that one.”As he was about to act, both crystalline horns leaked out vapors, and they shattered into pieces. “What?” Edgar’s jaw slackened. “The cores…” For a moment, he thought that the cores were gone; however, two round-shaped glowing stones shot slightly high in the air above the beasts’ heads, tiny bits of fire and electric surges still connecting it to the respective beasts. “That’s…” Edgar’s eyes lit up. “Are they the beast cores?” He had only heard
Edgar sat at the edge of a tunnel, hiding behind a protruding stone. He had been observing the rainbow-colored beast core. It was glowing and had deep colors, but it wasn’t giving off lightning anymore.“Master did tell me a lot about the cores, but I don’t quite remember the details. It’s hard to keep them in mind as he didn’t repeat those lessons.” He couldn’t help but blame his master for his own shortcomings. He looked at the worm’s core, which looked relatively bland, but he still found it a bit hard to decide between the two.“Which one should I take?“I was told it’s important as our first core will greatly impact our future, and both cores are not bad. One gives an earth ability, and the other&hell
Forty hours after Edgar got crippled and experienced a near-death situation after consuming the thunderbird’s core.Edgar had just dodged the stinger and claws of a giant gray scorpion and struck its head with his heel. The drive that leaked out through his leg crushed its head and separated its pincers from the rest of its body. It wobbled for a while before crashing helplessly, as gray blood painted the ground. The blood stank pretty bad. Edgar had to quickly move away from there. He didn’t have a stone necklace to lead his path, but he wasn’t in as bad of a situation as he thought. Though he couldn’t see much in that darkness, he could still smell things a lot better than before. It was as if he could feel every scent flowing through his blood, helping him discover everything around him.
As darkness, devoid of love and warmth, incessantly endeavored to sink into the furthest depths of his mind, Edgar was learning things, bit by bit.In a place where light rarely ever shone, the creatures living there moved and hunted in a lot of intriguing ways. Worms used the sense of touch to not only detect the vibrations to spot the prey, but also figured out which rocks were easy to pass through. As Edgar used the holes made by these worms, he began to unravel more and more about their proceedings. He had seen shrimps feed on snails and worms at sea shore, but it was the opposite in these underground tunnels. The worms ganged up on the cave shrimps. The predator would become the prey itself more often than not.Back in shushui mountains, great-backed sloths also used to swing on healthy tree branches and avoide
There were many holes in every pathway, and having fallen through many such holes in the past, Edgar had already learned how to avoid falling.“Damn, there’s no light in sight,” he lit up his hair with lightning and looked up at spaces or holes that took him higher, toward the surface.“How many days has it been since I made a viper retreat?” While keeping watch on holes beneath his feet, especially by not going any closer to those that leaked out gasses, he continued to explore. He walked on delicate pieces of random rock joining rifts, hearing his own heartbeat more than anything, for falling from such a spot would take him hundreds of feet deeper, assuming the fall wouldn’t kill him. So, he was extremely careful, as some of these rocks were creaking and moving.
About a month later.A bald fair-skinned girl, Fabby, was carrying a small vegetable basket, and though she looked lean, her stomach was bulging more than usual. And a one-eyed man dressed in uniform was right behind her, full of smiles, as he sang the song he himself had written or so he said. He was tall and sinewy, and he reeked of alcohol.“Wherever you goI’m right behind youWherever you areI’m not far from youWhat can I do?My heart is selfishAnd it doesn’t want to be aloneSo please fulfill this lover’s w
As the big bat hovered crazily in the sky, the human who was dangling by its feet was clearly struggling. Not only was its speed too much, its flight force was out of his expectations. All he could do was wait for the right opportunity to jump. After some patient yet hurtful waiting, when the bat came close enough to the surface, he let go of the beast. Though he tried to land gracefully, his roll was rather clumsy, and he ended up hitting his head to the nearest boulder.“That hurts…” his whole head felt dizzy. This person standing in his leafy underpants was Edgar. The mysterious copper plate was still stuffed in the back of his underwear. There were cuts and bruises all over his legs, arms, and back, but his face and chest were clean. Though Edgar&r
Bittu’s back slammed against the wall before his body slid and collapsed on the floor. His eyes grew open as wide as they could from the impact, but his sight was still blurry. Blood rushed through his sedated veins, and with every fraction of a second, his sight bettered. The young man in green, Edgar, was walking straight toward him like a beast whose shackles were on the verge of breaking. The peeping heads that were looking in slackened jaws couldn’t recognize him at all, as they couldn’t quite get a full view of his face. However, that wasn’t the case for the one lying on the floor. The moment he regained his sight, Bittu’s eyes grew as wide as they could. “It can’t be…” Time slowed down from the extreme tension he felt upon slowly but surely recognizing th
