Chapter 1. COMPENSATION

Edward Steel entered the party hall looking pale, tired, and helpless. With sweat dripping down his face and neck. He was breathing heavily. Her heavy but quick steps approached Lily who was busy chatting with a client of the family company.

As he walked up to Lily, all eyes were on him.

"Please, give the money back. I don't have any money left to pay for my sister's hospital bills. The compensation is the only money I have. I need to pay the hospital fees immediately if I want to keep my sister's treatment going."

Lily was in shock. Her eyes widened in surprise at Edward's sudden presence.

"It's your fault that you were born a useless person! If only you could work better and make more money, your sister wouldn't be as miserable as she is now. So, don't blame others for your failure!"

"Mom, please...." Edward was about to grab Lily's hand, but she immediately avoided it with a disgusted face.

He had only one hope: compensation from the company to pay for his brother's critical hospital bills. Instead, he was told that he could not claim the money because it had been taken by his mother-in-law, Lily Cooper.

"Stop calling me mom! I never thought of you as my daughter's husband. I don't want to have a poor, homeless son-in-law like you!" she snapped loudly.

Everyone there was shocked to find out that Edward was Roselyn's husband. Many people wondered who had managed to marry Lily Cooper's beautiful and charming only daughter. Many were scrambling to take her heart and make her their wife, but the news of her sudden marriage left all the men heartbroken.

As it turned out, the man who married Roselyn was just a poor, useless loser. That was the thought of everyone at the party.

"At least please take pity on my sister. She needs treatment. Or, give me half of what you took," Edward said, still trying to plead with Lily.

"Don't expect me to return the money. During the time you were married to Roselyn, you never gave her a penny. So, think of it as your contribution as her husband. Of course, it's your responsibility!"

Edward didn't know what to do. He was very distressed. His mind was in turmoil and he couldn't think straight.

Suddenly, Roselyn walked over to Edward and stood beside him. She looked at her mother with a pleading expression.

"Mom, please return the money. After all, it is Edward's money. He needs the money for his sister's hospital fees," Roselyn pleaded.

However, Lily became even angrier when Roselyn blatantly defended her.

"You still dare to defend and help a loser like him?!" shouted Lily loudly. Her eyes glared sharply at Edward. "This loser doesn't deserve to be your husband. Poor and useless. You should have realized, Roselyn. You should have divorced him a long time ago!"

"Mom..."

"Shut up, Roselyn. Don't keep defending him!" interrupted Lily harshly. "Get out of here if you still have any self-respect. And it's much better if you're the one who divorces my daughter! Set her free and don't make her life miserable again by marrying a useless husband like yourself!"

Lily lost her words. Her eyes heated up as Lily scolded her. Everyone had started gossiping about Edward's uselessness as a husband and her ears were heating up from the insults that were clearly ringing in her ears. They seemed to be whispering deliberately, gossiping about him in a classy voice.

"If I were Roselyn, I would have divorced him long ago."

"Who would want to live with a loser husband?"

"Right, especially since he's poor. Look at his clothes, like a tramp and oh my... what a smell."

"I can't stand it. It smells like garbage!"

Edward clenched his hands into fists as he heard the taunts and condescending remarks from everyone. And to make matters worse, Roselyn was crying. She had tried to defend him, but she too was unable to stand up to her mother. And now, she had to endure the shame of people gossiping about her husband.

Edward had no power. He had no choice but to leave without being able to defend himself.

After being kicked out of Lily's party, Edward didn't know where to go to find money for his sister's treatment. He had no savings, nor could he ask his friends for help as they also made fun of him that he was just useless trash. They rudely refused to help him and told him not to bother them.

Edward sat by the roadside looking sad and helpless. He didn't know what to do. Then, he suddenly remembered that he hadn't gotten any salary at his workplace for three months.

He rushed to the company where he worked. He planned to meet his boss and ask for his unpaid salary.

When he knocked on the door and entered his boss's room, he was surprised to see his boss was having fun with a woman on the sofa. His boss seemed to be enjoying how she was sitting on his lap, with both hands around his neck. Caressing him and teasing him with her charms.

"Baby, I want something. There's a new bag launching and I want to buy it. Can you buy it for me, Baby?" she asked. She whispered in his face with a sensual gesture that made him grin.

He kissed her lips and smiled contentedly, then he handed her a stack of money.

"Buy whatever you want, Baby. All the money is yours," he said and kissed her lips once again.

The woman immediately broke into a big smile. She squealed with happiness as she got a pile of money from him.

Edward who saw the incident could only curse silently, regretting his boss's bad attitude. As the woman moved from her boss's lap, he immediately noticed Edward's presence.

"What are you doing here?! Can't you knock before entering your boss's room?!" he shouted at Edward. The woman immediately left with a pale face. Trying to spruce up her appearance and take the money she got.

Just before she left, she glanced at Edward with a smirk and kissed his boss on the lips. Then she took a small run as she passed Edward while looking down. Edward didn't even want to look at her as she passed by. He then walked over to his boss.

"Sorry, I've knocked on the door a few times, but there's no answer," Edward informed her.

"I don't care! Where are your manners, huh? Didn't your parents teach you? Oh, right... is it because you're poor that you don't know how to learn?!" he snapped.

"I'm sorry," Edward said in a low voice. He could only look down with both hands in front of him.

His boss cleared his throat. He sat back down after adjusting his messy tie. Haughtily, he stared at Edward who was still standing with no intention of telling him to sit down. "What do you want?" he asked.

"I came here to ask for my salary."
