TEARS OF THE HEIR

He glued his ear to the door and listened on a conversation a twelve-year old boy shouldn’t have. His boots and clothes were covered in mud, and breath heavy.

“He is still a boy give him time to grow, he will come around.” The firm voice of Mrs. Greene escaped the room, repelling that of Mr. Greene.

Daniel was still unsure as to what was going on, he kept his ears to linger on for a while, hoping the things he had heard his grandfather say about him was completely wrong. His knees wobbled against each other, as his frail legs began to ache but he kept the pain within.

“He is not just a boy, Agnes,” Mr. Green retorted with his voice as firm as possible, maintaining his ground, “he is to take over the reins of this family when I am gone. My time is near and I can’t see a leader in him. His mother brought in a bastard to my son, and now I have to deal with it.”
