A powerful water column surged around their skin, dropping from the top of their head down towards their feet. When the water splashed and covered the floor, it revealed Kana, Ren, Aiko, and Yakeru standing on solid ground.
- “I told you to stop doing that.” – Kana retorted.
- “Stop doing what?”
- “Stop kissing me.”
- “But, you like it.” - Yakeru smiled.
- “I don’t.”
- “You do.”
- “Shut it.”
Aiko let her feet rest on unfamiliar territory. She stood on rough, desert-like soil in the middle of a wide path. There was nothing cozy about these surroundings. The sun was shining bright and the heat quickly warmed her unguarded cheeks. Although it wasn’t as boiling hot as in Wolfmore, the weather was warm enough to make her skin glisten with sweat. But, despite the sun being at full blast, there were no trees nearby that would serve as a comfortable canopy.
Ren smiled awkwardly at the two. Then he turned towards Aiko. Although her body healed on its own not long after the battle, she still went through a great deal of pain. The pup was worried.
After taking a deep breath, Yakeru started walking forward and Kana quickly followed. Yet, Aiko stood behind, obviously hesitant to take another step. A lone drop of sweat made its way down the young girl’s neck. The girl brushed it off, removing the tiny trail of momentary coolness.
For a moment there, Aiko was lost in thought. Her mind was flooded with the barbaric bloodshed. Intense flashbacks took their toll. All those bodies covered the prison floor. Their bones severed into pieces. Their limbs scattered across the place. His hands dripped in blood. His scythe feasted upon their souls. It was brutal.
- “Aiko! Aiko!”
The girl could hear muffled voices calling her name. But, she didn’t react. She focused on the flashbacks, instead. Too many people died. Too many lost their lives.
- “For what?!”
The girl mumbled. Yet, her quiet voice couldn’t reach the ears of the pup who stood next to her. Seeing that she had no intention of moving, Ren stretched his fluffy cheeks. He stuck his tongue out and bent his adorable ears. Those goofy faces were cute and ridiculous at the same time. If none of the killings ever happened, Aiko would have just laughed it off. But, there was nothing that would help her regain her innocent smile. Not anymore. At that moment, her pupils shrunk, as if they couldn’t take any more light.
Suddenly, the girl felt something cold and slimy pressing against her nose. Ren licked her face, sending a shiver down her spine. It immediately helped Aiko regain her senses.
- “Are you all right?” – the pup asked with a worried look on his face.
- “Uhm…Yes.” – the girl scratched her head and forced out a smile.
- “Why are you spacing out, then?”
Her heart ached. But, Aiko immediately buried those awful feelings deep inside. Then answered with another smile.
- “Sorry, about that. It’s nothing.”
- “Then, come on! Follow me!” - Ren grabbed her by the hand and pulled her towards Kana and Yakeru.
- “Where are we going?”
- “You will find out soon enough.” – Kana added with a firm tone.
After walking some time under the heat, they approached an arid coast. They could finally see a small cluster of tropical land masses. Soon, the desert soil was covered with trees. The archipelago teemed with a flamboyant environment that was foreign to the young girl. All kinds of flowering canopies, with yellow and red flowers blooming across the land.
- “You could have teleported us closer, you know.” – Yakeru complained.
- “No need.” – Kana added.
But, Aiko was hooked on something else. She remembered that kiss in the prison. The moment their lips touched, a massive surge of magical energy enveloped Kana’s body. It replenished her strength, healed her wounds, and supplied her system with unfathomable power. Since Aiko learned how to use her newfound sight, she grasped every moment when mana merged with Kana’s soul. As if, the woman was reborn right before her eyes.
- “Kana…” – Aiko’s voice wavered. “Can you tell me what happened back there?”
- “You mean the prison?”
- “Yes.”
- “Oh…that’s right. You can see it now.” – Kana commented and kept walking. “He gave me an enhanced mana stone. It unsealed my power.”
- “You see, kid…”- Yakeru barged in while messing with Aiko’s hair. “Kana, here, got herself in some deep shit. Good thing I came or you three would have died there.”
- “I understand that. Thank you for helping us.” – Aiko bowed with respect, catching him off-guard. “But, that’s not what I asked.”
- “Well, someone is getting ballsy.”
Yakeru stepped forward into Aiko’s personal space. He loomed over the young girl and looked straight into her eyes. Clearly with the intent to intimidate her. Aiko gulped. Her confidence immediately sank, and her eagerness to find the answer went down with it.
- “It’s fine. She deserves to know.” – the sorceress pushed him away. “Five months ago, I fought Elidy. But, I lost and she sealed my power to punish me for it. Yakeru helped me get it back.”
- “What?! You fought the goddess?” – Ren barked in shock.
- “Yes.”
- “Did you hear that, Aiko? She fought the goddess! By Elidy’s grace! What were you thinking?! No human can survive that!”
Aiko stood there knee-deep in silence. There was tension in her eyes. She quickly searched her brain for answers. The kind of answers she was looking for a while now. Then, came another memory. This time it was that place. The different world she went to when the shuriken almost took her life. She remembered the garden that looked like paradise. She also remembered the scorching land that looked like hell.
- “I see.” – the girl placed her left hand on the bottom of her chin. She was lost in thought again. “It all makes sense now.”
- “Speak.” – Kana insisted.
- “Remember when you fought the assassins at the Demon Apple?”
- “Yes.”
- “Their leader hit me with a poisoned weapon. I believe I died back then.”
- “Impossible. You can’t resurrect yourself if you are dead.” – Yakeru added.
- “I didn’t. Someone else did.”
- “What?!” – Ren was by now in complete shock.
- “I went to a strange place. There was another being there. Waiting for me. Something powerful. I…still can’t wrap my mind around it. But, her aura…it felt familiar.”
- “What do you mean?” – Kana asked.
- “That power that enveloped her body looked quite like yours. The second Yakeru gave you the mana stone, that similar aura wrapped around your body.”
That’s when Yakeru and Kana looked at each other. Their eyes unblinking. Although they never said a word, only nodded their heads, it seems they knew exactly what the other one was thinking. Instead of pushing the conversation further, Kana decided to end it there.
- “Thank you for telling me that.”
- “Aren’t you going to explain to me why?!” – Aiko was becoming agitated.
- “We have more pressing matters to attend to.”
- “What’s more important than that?”
- “Look, over there.” – Kana pointed north.
Aiko had a lot more to say, but she knew she couldn’t stand up to the sorceress. Rather, she shut her lips and focused her gaze. There was a network of tall pointed huts and bridges nearby. The spiked wooden towers immediately took Aiko’s breath away. Each hut had pointy bones tied on the edge of the roof. Obviously, whoever lived here hunted massive creatures and used their sharp teeth for display. These trophies became a symbol of the tribe’s glory.
- “This is Ringborg Cay. Home to the cyclopes.”
Out of the blue, Aiko felt a tremor under her feet. Like small quakes that would come and go. But, the closer they got to the huts, the stronger the vibrations became. Soon, her entire body was shuddering. Not from fear, but because she couldn’t hold her ground anymore. Ren was unfazed. He was hovering above the floor. While Yakeru and Kana maintained a perfect balance, walking forward with ease.
Shortly, the quakes subsided. That’s when a massive dark shadow loomed over the young girl. It covered the blazing sun. Something so big, it made even the clouds seem like tiny shades. Aiko raised her head. The first thing she saw was Ren frozen in fear. The moment she stretched her neck further, she was met with a colossal creature. It was a one-eyed giant, a massive brute with ripped muscles, a round belly, huge fangs, and a single horn sticking out of its head.
Aiko was mortified.
She heard many rumors about these monsters. Every slave in Wolfmore knew them all too well. They were pure terror incarnate. Ever since she was a young girl, the adults would warn her day and night. Everything they said was now ringing in her ears like a loud alarm bell.
- “Don’t leave the village or the cyclopes will get you.”
- “Never go beyond the mountains. There is no turning back.”
- “Whatever you do, don’t let them catch you.”
- “You are better off dead than getting stuck on that isle.”
Aiko was now trapped in a nightmare, made by her own brain. The tiny hairs on her arms and neck bristled. Her watery eyes enlarged. At that moment, Yakeru took a step forward. But, instead of a fight breaking out as the girl expected, Aiko and Ren witnessed a mind-blowing sight.
Having both hands, feet, knees, and forehead touching the ground, the creature bowed with respect. It looked like it worshiped the young man.
- “Overlord Igarashi! Tu'gor! IIbor not expect you. Come. Enter.”
Yakeru nodded and made his way into what looked like a village. But, it extended well beyond a single isle. There were huts and bridges all across the coastline, even on the smaller islands not far from here. Aiko and Ren were still frozen in fear. To put their mind at ease, the sorceress placed her hand on the girl’s shoulder and whispered in her ear.
- “Tu'gor means welcome. Follow me.”
Ren looked into Aiko’s eyes. They were both terrified. But, the pup decided to trust the sorceress and gave Aiko a reassuring smile. It helped her calm that inner fear for just a little bit.
Together, they passed the gates.
The place was swarming with giants. Some were carving massive clubs in front of their huts. They hammered sharp bones all over the tip of the weapon, giving it a menacing design. Others carried whole trees and beasts on their backs as if they were lighter than a feather. The rest were skinning huge animals alive only to hang their skin to dry. The area reeked of corpses. Fresh and old blood covered the floor.
- “These are lesser cyclopes.” – added Kana. “They do manual labor. We are going to meet with a wiser and more powerful cyclops.”
- “There is someone even more powerful than these things?!”
- “Yes. Every village has an elder. You will meet him soon.”
Together they made their way to the tallest hut in the village. When they arrived, the giant who guided them there, raised the animal hide that covered the entrance and gestured for them to come inside.
- “Elder waits. Go.”
The place was wide and spacious. Over a dozen animal rugs covered the floor. Each was unique in its own way. Despite being extremely dirty, the rugs were soft to the touch and warmer than anywhere else on the dirt floor. Aiko noticed small flames making their way upward towards the ceiling. There was a campfire burning in the middle of the room. The heat cooked some of the fishes placed nearby. Their skin already turned flaky.
- “Tu'gor, overlord! What brings you here?”
- “Tabarg, long time no see.”
- “I must apologize for not having a feast ready to greet you. I do hope these snacks will be sufficient for the time being. In the meantime, I’m having them prepare a worthy meal.”
Another giant approached. Yet, this one sounded oddly melodic. The way he spoke was fluent and elegant. It felt like talking to an elf of higher stature. But, the moment the light from the fire revealed his face, Aiko was forced to accept the reality. He was two times taller than the rest of the cyclopes in the area. The creature even wore more sophisticated clothing. His obnoxious muscles were hidden under a thin layer of cloth. His garments consisted of two main parts. A champagne tunic and a cloak with a hint of blue and yellow hue. They were secured in place with a couple of ornamental pins and a girdle around his massive waist.
- “Don’t worry about it. I'm here for this kid. I want you to help her ascend.” – Yakeru continued.
- “In that case, come. Take a seat, my lord. We have much to discuss.”
[Floating Island, above Ennore] With every contraction came intense pain. Loud screams dominated the royal chambers, stretching to every corner of the nearby rooms. The silk sheets soaked in blood. When the contractions subsided, only for a brief moment, the woman took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and tried to cope with the pain. But, as soon as that moment passed, another wave of agony followed, taking over every section of her body. The woman screamed again. Nothing could be more brutal than that sharp piercing pain. Over a dozen maids attended to her every need. Some brushed her sweat. Others held her hands. While the rest made sure she was warm and as comfortable as she could get. -“Wait. Wait. All right. Push.” The woman nodded and let out one final grunt. Her lower body tightened, her flesh stretched, and the baby slowly fell into the hands of the midwife. After a short while, the
The flames danced once more. The blaze that was once so alive now chilled Aiko to her very core. It caused her hands to twitch. The heat created a new image, this time of an elven city. The exact moment the girl laid eyes on the structures, she immediately noticed a difference. It was much darker. Its streets dreary, as if the entire kingdom was submerged in sadness; and it could be felt through the houses they built and the clothes they wore. Used to the bright elven capital, this scenery pierced Aiko’s heart. -“To create a strategy, as fast as possible, the races borrowed resources from one another. With the state they were in back then, it was impossible to put an end to the slaughter and save their female brethren. They needed something more. A unified front.” – the elder continued. His deep tone, unchanging. Royal beings from every corner of the world were now meeting in a single room. Devising their st
Newly clothed trees stood tall in a wintery landscape. The dim light from the Waxing crescent brightened up the snow, reflecting some parts of the perfect white. This icy serenade was a stunning beauty, far away from the bustling cities, crowded markets, and dangerous roads. It was an isolated place. Not even a single road led up to it. In the distance, behind dense evergreen woods stood the North Grove Estate. A mansion so guarded, one might think the king lived there. Yet, the woman who stared right at its bright windows knew otherwise. She let the ice crackle underfoot as she walked closer to the estate. Although she wore thin clothing, she barely felt the cold. The only steady pilot flame was the rage that burned inside. The assassins stationed at the trees, not far from the entrance, sensed it. That anger. They immediately signaled the rest of the human guards to take up defensive positions. -“Intrude
Musical vibrations synchronized with Aiko’s soul. The gentle, relaxing melody created an infinite ripple of petals and blooms. Every motion and every vibration sounded enchanting. It reverberated in her mind, causing a single tear to slip by. That sound. That sweet tune was too familiar. The girl turned around to find a stunning young woman brushing her fingers against a well-made string lute. An instrument with a neck similar in length to that of a guitar but without the frets. She sat on the riverbank, enjoying the morning light. -“Daisuke would have wanted that. Can I…?” Aiko murmured. She wanted to walk closer to the girl to get a better look at that instrument. Ever since he was a little boy, Daisuke longed for it. He wanted to hear that beautiful melody. But, couldn’t do it with his make-shift lute. That’s when, Yakeru placed his firm palm on her small shoulder, putting an end to her mindless babbling. -&n
The mining tunnels became the arteries of Wolfmore, blackened by the abuse that’s been going on for years. The beatings and torture behind closed doors went on and on without end. The only ones who were exempt were the little children. While the corpses of those who tried to retaliate were fed to the lizards that lived nearby. Every day more humans died but were quickly replaced by new ones recently captured during an elven raid. In just two years, the slaves lost their will to fight back. They decided it was best to surrender and live their lives to the fullest. All for the sake of the children. Aiko stared in horror. Then, the girl stood up. Every muscle in her body shook. Wolfmore was nothing like she remembered. What she had for this mining village was only a childish image. A foolish expectation. Fleeting hope. -“What is this?! Ren? Is this…is it true?” -&nb
A multitude of dark clouds darkened the sky. Soon, a thick veil of black fog descended upon Hanami village. Then, the sky opened. A massive crack ripped through the heavens causing the vast universe to peek through. The wider it became, the easier it was to see countless stars and planets scattered across the galaxy. -“A Breach!” – Kana declared. -“Here?!” – Yakeru was shocked. -“They found her.” -“Pfft…Hahaha!” – Yakeru burst out laughing. “I’ll fuck them up so bad, their wrinkled ugly skin will strengthen.” Just when the crack gaped, another one formed right next to it. And then another, and another, until the entire wild blue yonder tore wide under the pressure. One Breach was all it took to erase Wolfmore from the world. Now, with over a dozen cracks
Tonight Ennore was brimming with lights. The lanterns fueled by magic, hovering in the sky became a focal point. The crossing bridges, magical waterfalls, perfectly constructed sky towers, and grounded buildings were the epitome of the elven kingdom. As if these pristine white avenues were never exposed to the deadly scourge that roamed the lands. The roads laid empty. The citizens inside their homes seemed to be waiting for something. They heard the sound of boots long before they saw a mass of bodies gathering. Countless human beings stood in formation. Dozens of rows flocked the streets, their eyes trained to look ahead. The army was packed with men, covered in armor from head to toe. Their faces blanched, unreadable under the shadows of their iron helmets. To these soldiers, it was boiling hot outside. Their armor was too heavy and thick, trapping their body heat and soaking their skin with sweat. Nevertheless, their gaze remained resolute. They were obviously used to th
William’s nostrils filled with the smell of blood. The spasms in his stomach became so overwhelming, he could barely hold back the nausea. Part of him hoped that at this moment, he would be elsewhere. Not staring at their skin turning pale and their eyes becoming opaque. Having a form of a bird and a human face, he thought that killing them would feel easier. It would feel as if this is just another quest. But, their cries, screams, and desperate pleads for help made his skin crawl. -“What have I done? What are we doing?” He thought to himself. Yesterday William was drinking the finest wine and enjoyed the most lavish feast, and now he is here chopping their heads off. No amount of horror could prepare him for witnessing the hopelessness and agony ripping these harpies from the inside out. All he knew was that their weapons and choices in life put the world in danger. But, with every harpy that fell, his
The rain came with a confident wind, rousing the trees and fires into a vortex. Each raindrop – a kaleidoscope, covering the library in a comforting blanket. The phoenix couldn’t help but wonder, as it was lying on the floor exhausted, what it would feel like if it could stop time and just look at it. Observe each watery bubble before it touched the ground. The fires on its wings dimmed, and the phoenix morphed into a small human. Welcoming every drop with his outstretched fingers. Like he always wanted to. Soon, the rain formed puddles, followed by a cool freshness in the breeze. Most of the Library of Pergamon was in ruins. Thankfully, the rain came when it did, or the rest of this grand building would have succumbed to the flames.Paige woke up suddenly, not because her clothes were soaked, but because she remembered what she was up against. An entire demon army. Her eyes tried to adapt to the light and rain. She had no idea how long she slept. The only thing that sent her on edge
With a crack as loud as thunder, the third statue split from its pedestal. The entire thing accelerated down and crushed into this unfamiliar woman. Amplified by the figure’s powerful magics, this statue sent forth an immense shockwave, toppling the walls and limiting their visibility. The woman coughed.- “Really?”- “It was worth a try.” – the figure shrugged.- “There…is…no need to fight.”Aiko retaliated as she tried to release her neck from the woman’s suffocating magic. But, as soon as she said that, the mysterious woman waved a hand, and Aiko found herself glued to the wall and with a fractured skull. Although Aiko was out cold, her godlike powers focused on stopping the bleeding and getting her body back in shape.- “You know you can’t kill us, right?” – the figure added.- “Who said I want to kill you?”- “You are damn sure acting like it.”- “I just want you to know your place. That’s it.”- “I can relate to that.” – the figure chuckled. “Actually, I’ve been meaning to ask.”
[ During the rule of the God of Time - 5,000 BE* ]*BE – Before Elidy*AE – After ElidyA woman strode forward. Her long legs and slender arms exposed beneath her silky, almost transparent dress. Her massive wings carried her across the sky, leaving behind a powerful gust of wind. Her green, transparent hair, decorated with a dozen golden accessories danced with the breeze. When she landed, the elf guards greeted her with respect. This woman was a stunning beauty, with a slim face, full lips, and a distinctive jawline. She resembled an elf, as she was almost as tall as them. But, her eyes were a lot bigger, and her ears pointer. Her leaf-like wings tucked themselves neatly on her back.- “Lady Ayesha Elmcup, welcome. The royal family is expecting you.”- “Can you call your queen? We don’t have much time.”- “Right away.”The elf queen soon came and the two conversed.- “Ayesha, if you are here, it means…”- “War is coming. He took them. Erased them from existence. The creatures are to
The cavern expanded like some natural ballroom. A tiny hole on the roof paved the way for white-gold rays to shine through. Blessed spirits did their nightly dance, channeling their essence into the magical staff ahead. This place would be a sanctuary in any storm. But, when unwelcomed visitors were to enter, the spirits would release an ear-splitting screech. Just as they did right now. Blood ran down their necks from their raptured eardrums as Aiko and Kana battled their way inside.Aiko had finally mastered her skills, supporting Kana with impenetrable shields and quick healing spells. No matter what the spirits would throw at the sorceress, she kept fighting back. Without Aiko’s endless rejuvenation, Kana wouldn’t be able to come this far. But, with Aiko by her side, she couldn’t care less about the injuries she suffered. Like those sharp stones that sliced her skin, tore apart her dress, and broke her bones. After all, everything would regenerate as soon as it got damaged. These
Barefoot, naked soles on grass… once that was a unique kind of bliss. It felt natural for the grassland to tickle her soles. But now, it was different. Every inch of her skin was covered in deep cuts and bruises. Even walking on the gentle grass felt like running over a billion shards of glass. Her stunning braids, adorned with the most beautiful flowers, came undone. Her short dress was all torn apart. Yet, that pain felt like a passing memory. There was something else that consumed her mind. This young child, a forest spirit, who was supposed to emit this bright and joyful energy, had succumbed to darkness. The kind of darkness that would render anyone insane. She looked at her hands. She looked at her chest. She looked at her own reflection in the pond.Blood. So much blood. The girl tried to wash it clean. Wipe it off. But, it didn’t work. Every time the water went over it, the blood would come back. As a reminder of what she did. She knew it didn’t come from her own wounds. She w
Once hollow, the shadows solidified into a person capable of outrunning even the tracker demons. From her fingertips, fog condensed into an apparition quite like the demons that roamed this place. Creating the perfect distraction for her to pass through. There was no joy in Nora’s eyes, nor a suggestion of a smile, just pure seriousness as she ran across the narrow corridors. If luck would have it, she would leave unscathed.Grey shadows formed into platforms which she used to climb to the top of the tower, and reach that single hole she opened when she infiltrated this place – her only exit strategy. The shadows were like patient clocks, waiting for her feet to land and then disappear. But, the further she ran, the more demons came out. Many emerged from the walls, trying to block her at every turn.Nora would let her eyes see how close they would get. And when they were at the right distance, the tip of her blade would exterminate them. Even the shadows that were steps for her to wa
Stars filled the sky, splitting over the black marble. In this vastness of eternal space, a couple of shadows blended into the dark as their flames died down. Frost grew over their limbs. Soon, ice crystals covered their entire bodies, allowing their brain to empty and become one with the flow. Karma felt the wind blow her hair over her eyes like a choreographed cyclone. In this place, days, seconds, months, and hours didn’t matter. Even the seasons moved like a fast clock, turning and changing in an infinite loop. Walking here rendered their souls to the greatest clarity. How the stars moved where he walked felt as though the galaxy could follow his shadow. Merge with his essence. This young man. He was somewhat too thin for his height. His body seemed malnourished. Stretched even. A very large wooden bead necklace hung on his skinny neck. His extremely pale skin peaked through his loosely fitted robe. His long blond hair was now a dusty grey. It changed with his sudden growth. As
The smell of smoke was one thing, the shaking another. But, it wasn’t the million primitive arthropods that left Yakeru panting, but, the thin air that was difficult to breathe. Ever since they set foot on this plane, getting a breath of fresh air felt like a lucid dream. As soon as the army of giant and heavily deformed metameric creatures fell, the adventurer focused his gaze onward, not letting a single moment pass him by.The gate though solid, it was slowly split open. Massive claws dug deep in the bricks, and on the other side, an ominous presence lingered. The stink. It was polluting his lungs. Like some kind of sewage that had filled with centuries and never got cleaned. A place where corpses would get dumped and stay there for all eternity. Stacked one on top of the other. When the gate swung open, demons and mutated insects swarmed by the dozens. As if they couldn’t wait to feed on this man’s essence.Fire came as a golden ball, igniting the
Merging with the shadows came naturally to Nora. Long time ago, she learned to live rootless, able to transform into the strangest of situations and still appear like everyone else. She has been in the game longer than she can remember, and the ties to her dark self only grew deeper. Her magic allowed her to take any shape she pleased. To command any voice, she deemed necessary. She would walk alone, then select a few others and walk by their side, as if she’d known them for ages. She pinned the tip of her blade in specific points, masking their magical essence with a shadowy cloak. These markings, they saw and heard everything about everyone, like a goldmine of information. The only difference was that her power would only register the voices, images, and thoughts of targets weaker than her. Not a single demon grew wary. But, the fact that most of them were a bunch of mindless brutes, thirsty for blood, made her work a little more taxing than she predicted. She need
