Edward main goal for saying those words was to get Malcolm angry. He overheard the speech Malcolm gave in the church and how he planned to fire every officer in Brickwoods once he becomes the vice mayor.

Fireing every officer means Mr.Alvarez would also lose his job and things would go from bad to worse for Angela.

So he thought of a way of how to prevent it,and only solution was to hinder Malcolm from becoming the vice mayor.

Saying those words to piss off Malcolm,Malcolm had to choice than to attack him infront of everyone. Neescasters and journalists were all present,taking record of the scene that just happened.

Everyone believed Malcolm just attacked Edward simply because he offered his condolences. No one heard the words Edward spoke to get Malcolm angry.

If news gets out,everyone would see Malcolm as an irresponsible boy who's not fit to occupy the role as the vice mayor. Who seriously attacks someone just because he offered his condolences.
