“You… Will?”
Boris really hoped he wouldn’t.
“Yes!”
Jason looked around and found the fireplace. He walked up to the stack of wood and found a sturdy branch about one metre long.
“Can I borrow this?”
He looked at the man behind the counter.
“You can… But why?”
“I don’t have a weapon.”
“That is your weapon?”
Boris felt a slight headache coming over him.
Jason raised his shoulders, giving a helpless look. He really had no choice.
“Hey, do you know how to use a sword?”
Jason looked at the woman, raising his brows.
“Yes!”
He didn’t have to be humble with what he knew the best. He had practised using a sword for twenty-five years.
“Show me!”
He didn’t expect her to throw a sword at him, but he caught it by the sheath.
He drew the longsword out of the sheath, eyeing the woman. He noticed that she had another sword by her side.
‘Not the same size and grip. She is not a duel wielder. Why does she have two swords?’
He felt the grip.
“This is a good sword, but is it yours?”
“Oh, why do you ask?”
She frowned a bit, feeling disrespected.
“This grip is wider than the one by your side, and this one hasn’t seen much blood. But that sword is looking to take a life.”
He nodded at the sword by her side.
“You actually know your sword, eh? Right! I used that when my old sword broke, but it is not what I prefer. Can you handle it?”
Sharon felt interested in the young man.
Jason silently took out the sword completely and performed a horizontal slash and a vertical cut.
Almost everyone turned their eyes when the sword moved.
Boris realised his hand was already on the hilt of his weapon.
‘Who the hell is this boy?’
He felt the threat from someone with equal strength.
‘A Master? But he has no aura. How the hell did someone like this come here? I am sure this guy can deliver the message. But why does his body look so weak?’
He didn’t see the strength and control of a master behind those moves, but the technique was even better than his.
‘He is like an old man who has used it since birth.’
“This is a fine sword.”
Jason was happy with what he felt.
“Then… Keep it.”
The woman was obviously in shock after witnessing those moves. If she fought with this guy, her only way to win was to try to overpower him with brute strength. Even with that, she felt a slight mistake would cost her life.
“Huh?”
Jason looked at the woman with serious eyes. He didn’t expect her to give it just like that.
“Keep it. I have my own.”
Her words looked sincere.
“My name is Jason Hope. I am a stranger.”
He stared into the woman’s eyes.
“I am Sharon. Adventurer from the Alexandria Adventurers Guild.”
“I will remember this favour. This is equal to a life.”
He gave her a sincere nod. The roads of Yuriel were not that friendly. Especially when they were this close to the Dark Forest.
“Hey, kid. Here! I like your attitude.”
He saw the bear-like man throwing him a waterskin.
“The name is Marco.”
“Thank you.”
Jason nodded happily. This was another very essential thing for the road. As long as he was alive, he would remember these favours.
…
‘Sigh.’
Jason finished filling the waterskin from the common well. He already had the sword by his side. He was ready to go out of the town toward the Light Shone. The last village bordering the Dark Forest.
“Hey, brother.”
‘Here we go.’
He knew this man was coming.
“The name is Logan Paul. Are you an American?”
Jason nodded his head.
“Great, nice to meet you, man.”
He simply shook the extended hand, wondering what this guy wanted with him.
“Can I ask you a question? Just a minute will be enough.”
“Go on.”
He looked at the woman who followed this guy all the way here. Two of them were still in the building when he left it.
“Did you get a quest notification?”
“Huh?”
It took him several seconds to realise what this guy was asking.
‘Ah… This is a game to them.’
He touched his armband, looking at the yellow-gold hologram. There was nothing like a notification, and he didn’t expect even to have one.
“No.”
“I see. Mind if I come with you?”
Logan was interested in this young man for several good reasons.
The NPCs didn’t look very friendly to the players, but this guy was the difference. He triggered a quest and even got a weapon and a waterskin. That wasn’t all, he was the one who found the basic details of the world.
“I am not going to share the reward.”
Jason was already in debt, and he didn’t need backup to complete this mission. As long as he made it to the village before dark, he was safe.
“Ah….”
Logan was speechless for a second.
“I don’t need the reward, man. I just want to go and see what is out there. Going with you is safer.”
“Are you sure? I am going to the last village on this entire continent. You will have more chances going the other way.”
He already felt this guy had other ideas, but it wasn’t the reason for his answer. It was the truth. He knew this guy was stronger than him, but he held the advantage.
“It is alright.”
“Alright!”
Jason had no reason to reject Logan Paul.
“Mind if I join the two of you?”
‘As expected….’
The woman had the same idea.
Jason saw the guy named Logan looking at the woman with suspicious eyes. Honestly, he didn’t care at all.
“My name is Dawn.”
Jason shook her hand in the same manner as Logan. Whatever the country they were from, they would learn the harsh reality of this world in the future. There were no exceptions. He could already tell that this woman could keep up with them when they moved, so he didn’t mind.
“Give me a couple of minutes. Then we move.”
He decided to ignore the hostile look these two had for each other and focused on the Armband to see the details.
…
The first holographic screen he checked was the yellow-gold-coloured one. Which he hadn’t seen in his previous life.
However, it had the most important function for the time being. The Log out button.
There were other functions like anti-harassment, recording, forum and other functions. All of them had an introduction on the developer’s website.
He realised why Logan asked him about recording the conversation with Boris, yet he had no idea of testing it for the time being. On the other hand, there was a notification on the forum. He saw a user named Poseidon inviting him to the Steel Guild group. He simply accepted it but didn’t waste his time on that. He knew the forum would explode very soon, maybe it already was, but he had time after he logged out.
The next screen was the translucent-black coloured one. He knew this one very well. This would be available even after The Endless became reality.
He looked at his stats.
Jason Hope
Strength
- 11Agility
- 12Physical Defence - 0%
Magical Defence - 0%
Body condition - 100.0%
Magic Affinity
- 0%No abnormal conditions.
Strength was related to physical strength, while agility was related to movement and attack speed.
Physical and Magical defence based on the enchantments and pieces of equipment, and he had none.
The Magic affinity was the only stat that wouldn’t be developed on its own. Even if one learned the Apprentice level magic, this would be 0%. It would only be unlocked if a person became a Novice and gained an affinity to one of the six spheres of magic. Which he failed to do in his last life.
The body condition was the most annoying one. As long as there was a slight scratch on the body, this would always be less than a hundred.
Also, any abnormal conditions like, poisoned, bleeding, or wounded would always be shown on this screen.
‘Sigh. I will try this time.’
It was all he could do.
Jason focused his eyes on the pale-green coloured screen next. It was also something he knew.
It was much bigger and already had a scrollbar. This was the one with skill trees.
He already saw one skill tree completely revealed. It was for the sword. As long as a person used a weapon for the first time, the skill tree would be unlocked.
He saw the sword skills arranged like a branch of a tree, beginning with the most basic skill, the stab. However, none of the skills was lit up. Instead, they all were in a dull grey colour. A sword-holding man inside a circle marked each skill, with the man moving based on the skill.
He saw a little portion of the circles relevant to the Horizontal slash and vertical cut being lit up.
‘So. it is the same.’
This was the same as his previous life when he came to Yuriel five years later. No skill would be unlocked automatically. The person should have appropriate attributes, along with practice, to execute the skill perfectly. Only then the entire circle would be lit up, showing that the person mastered the skill.
As for why these skills were arranged vertically as a tree, with some being above others and some parallel to other skills was a simple reason. They were based on the requirement to execute skills. There was no requirement to learn them in order. In fact, his skill tree for the sword didn’t have the stab lit up while two advanced movements were barely lit up.
‘I can simply swing the other weapons and unlock the skill trees, but what is the use?’
He took a deep breath, changing the rhythm, and a wave of mana passed through, touching the first magic node.
He wanted to unlock the magic skill tree, and the way to do it was to unlock the magic nodes in the body.
‘I can do it while I am moving.’
He finally looked at the two people who were having a staring contest with each other.
“I am about to move.”
…
“Uncle Boris, who is he?”
Sharon was looking at the boy named Jason from the window with her uncle. He was walking toward the city gate with the two others that came to see her uncle.
“I have no idea. But are all the strangers as strong as this one?”
Boris was also equally confused. That skill didn’t match the kid’s age.
“I will report this to His Majesty.”
He could only hope these people who appear out of thin air wouldn’t bring trouble to them.
“I thought there would be more people.”They only saw about ten people outside the Western gate. The guards at the gate also warned them of the dangers outside, but Logan expected to see daring players trying their luck here.“I guess they are still trying to find weapons. Besides, some might be looking for quests.”Jason didn’t care much about them. “The distance is 30 units. It is roughly thirty miles or forty-eight kilometres. I don’t wish to stay on the road in the dark.”“These guys, some of them want to follow us.”Logan was keen to notice it. He already disliked this woman latching onto them, but he had no choice. The instructions were clear, they shouldn’t engage in meaningless conflicts. Besides, he admitted Jason was the one with the final say.“If they can keep up with us, I don’t mind. Huh?”He was on the ground, trying to cut off a piece of cloth from the bottom of his trouser using the sword. He realised the material was quite tough, and he barely managed to rip it. “C
“Brother, are you trying to sneak up on them? Let me help.”Jason looked at Logan thinking if this man actually had a brain inside his head. Sneaking up to a wolf was something maybe only a master assassin could do, and he wasn’t even close to that.“You are dumb, aren’t you?”Dawn wasn’t able to hold back like Jason.“Don’t call me dumb.”“Shut up! I am going to rush. So stay here.”“What about that abnormal one?”“I’ll think about it later.”Jason sneaked forward a few more steps, hoping to buy more time.‘I am the worst when it comes to luck, aren’t I?’He felt the direction of the wind changing. There was no time left.…Jason took out his sword in haste and adjusted his poster before running toward the three wolves without hesitation. First, he had to pass through this place. Second, unlike the players, this man wouldn’t respawn after death. The wolves noticed his presence as soon as he made the loud noise. The two smaller ones were the first to move. The one on the left was sl
“This is a nice place.”Logan looked around in an elated mood. “Do you know where to deliver the message?”“I have to find Wizard Merlin.”“Yeah, I heard. Like in legends?”“I doubt that.”The legendary Merlin was a powerful wizard in the stories on Earth. However, on Yuriel, the title Wizard referred to the 3rd ranking among the wizard rankings. Still, a Wizard wasn’t something he would confront even if he reached the level he was in his previous life. “What are you guys going to do?”He looked back at his two companions.“I like to walk around until you are done. Are you going to return to the town?”Dawn asked him with interest. She saw how he fought, and she was impressed. There was a lot she could learn from Jason, at least that was her current plan.“Yes, I have to go back and report after delivering the message.”He already had twenty-three silvers, but he had to confirm that his work was complete. Besides, money was never too much.“Can I add you as a friend?”“Sure.”He si
“This is my seal. Boris will accept it.”“Thank you, Master.”“It is nothing. Now go next door and meet Amelia. She will find you a place to settle down. It is safer to leave tomorrow morning.”“Yes, Master.”…“What do you want?”“Are you… Amelia?”Jason stopped in front of the young woman. Honestly, he didn’t expect to see a figure like this in such a place. She was definitely below thirty, and her looks weren’t inferior. She was a beauty except for the shallow healing scar across her left cheek. Her grey shirt and long pants gave her a daring look that matched her deep black pupils. Jason thought her silver hair was exceptional. Her voice and gaze carried a cold and distant feeling. What stomped him was not her looks or her cold eyes, but the strength she was hiding. This was the Grandmaster that observed him when he entered the village. She definitely had the ability to talk to any person in such a tone. Even to a weaker Wizard.“I am. What do you need?”‘Don’t you already know
Along the way, Jason learned the real condition in the village. There were around three hundred families in the village, and most younger people seemed to be leaving. Since there was no exact value left in this small place, Alexandria seemed to have let it slip out of their grasp. As for the ones that were left in the village, they lead a scavenging life of collecting minerals and gems in the abandoned mines. Which was a risky matter, with the animals and unstable mines. This explained why there were no official guards in this village, and the reason for two hidden characters to appear there.Jason felt enlightened, but he was also baffled. He didn’t know about a lost kingdom that existed thousands of years ago. ‘I thought I lived here for twenty-five years. Apparently, I know nothing.’However, he felt this might be the real reason for no powerful wizard trying to claim this massive continent. Still, he was nobody to look into such deep matters. As for now, he had to hunt without
‘That feeling….’After resting for an hour, Jason got up from his cabin. ‘I risked my life.’He couldn’t shake off the disappointing feeling. Honestly, he knew he just underestimated the strength of the boar, and he definitely overestimated himself. If he received that injury in real life, he would be a cripple without the help of a Life Wizard. He already knew Dawn couldn’t do anything against the boar. Even he couldn’t penetrate its skin. If not a wizard, only a master-level warrior with an aura could harm it easily. The only other way to kill it with ease was to target its vital points. That was what he wanted to do, but he wasn’t powerful enough. ‘How did I forget the rules of hunting?’In the first five years of his life on Yuriel, wild game was exclusive to nobles and higher powers. It was exactly due to the difficulty of hunting. The animals they bred in captivity were somewhat smaller and less ferocious. In fact, he was just thinking of himself as the Master Swordsman he on
“Jason. Come and have a seat.”Freya’s voice sounded cold. Jason nodded to Freya, who seemed to be a bit hostile toward him. He noticed fifty or so people giving him odd eyes. He actually didn’t mind them as he knew they were looking at his worn-out clothes. He received similar looks when he entered the massive skyscraper. If not for Ashley's personal card, he wouldn’t be even able to get here. He ignored everyone and found a chair at the end.It was the building's 11th floor, and he saw many different gaming cabins and other facilities on the way there. This room looked more like a gym and had several mats on the ground. The steel chairs and the light table looked as if they were carried here in a hurry. They were playing several recordings people had in the game. Jason liked the recording method of the videos, but he knew the secret behind this first-person view. The armband was directly connected to the human brain and these footages were what people see in their view. There
“Sigh.”Freya gritted her teeth. Since they already invested in The Endless, there was no way to pull back at the moment. She was testing the waters with Jason. Besides, she was too surprised to hear that Jason had that much in-game currency with him.‘Is he a Beta tester? But there was no Beta testing.’Compared to Jason, their pro-gamers looked like immature children. If not for the fact that she trained them for a month, things would have been much worse today. “Fifty!”She knew there was no currency available for sale. Honestly, she already checked the available channels. ‘Huh?’Jason looked at Freya with a puzzled mind.“One hundred, each.”Freya clenched her fists, thinking Jason was trying to refuse. She wondered if he was lying.“D… Done.”Jason took a moment to process the information. ‘Did she say one hundred, each? Should I scrap more silvers? I should rather decide after receiving the reward for the message.’He thought for a moment before deciding. Even though the pric
"Shit," Amelia cursed under her breath as she deflected blow after blow, desperately trying to protect Jason from the relentless attacks. It wasn’t just her previous enemies; there was another massive threat looming on the horizon. She could feel the presence of a greater demon, its oppressive aura emanating from afar, finally ready to make its move.'I can't take on this thing,' she thought, parrying another strike aimed at her.She didn't have the luxury of time to grab Jason and flee. Besides, with the monstrous force approaching, running seemed pointless. This new threat was undoubtedly stronger than her.'If only he can fight,' she lamented, her grip tightening around her sword. She couldn't even afford a glance at Jason to check if he was still holding on. All she could hear were his painful grunts, each one a stab to her focus.…"Daddy, Daddy, no, I have to go!" Hanna cried out, trying to rush toward the mine entrance. Before she could take another step, Nocturne leapt from her
'This is not going to end well.'Jason barely caught his breath as he hid behind a stone column, narrowly evading the swing of a giant demon's sword. He felt a growing sense of helplessness as his spells failed to inflict any significant damage on these monstrous enemies. Surprisingly, his Arcane Spawns managed to restrain one of the demons temporarily. However, the limitation was clear—he could only summon three Arcane Spawns at a time, and that number was far from enough to take down even a single demon.'I don't think Amelia can hold on much longer.'While Jason was barely managing against a single demon, Amelia was handling all five of the remaining demons on her own. She moved with incredible agility, skillfully evading the swords and other weapons targeting her, striking back whenever she saw an opening. Her blade flashed, leaving shallow cuts on the demons’ thick skin, but it was clear that even with her skill, she was being overwhelmed. Five demons were far more than she cou
"Hanna, you have to be good and stay here, alright?""Alright, Daddy," Hanna responded, her voice tinged with sadness, but she kept her composure.'Hanna is a big girl. I can't cry. Mommy and Daddy promised to come back,' she reminded herself, trying to act brave.Floating behind her, Nocturne extended its tentacles, imitating the action of wiping away tears as if to comfort Hanna in its own eerie way."No, Hanna is not crying, Little Cuttlefish," Hanna tried to argue with Nocturne, waving her tiny fist cutely at the eldritch horror."Make sure everything is okay." Jason gave Hanna a quick peck on the forehead before turning to Samson and Butch."We will handle things while you are gone, Sir Jason," Butch assured him. Despite not being from Earth, he had learned to mimic Samson when addressing Jason. Many of the bodyguards, even those from Yuriel, had learned to act properly under Samson's guidance.Jason's gaze shifted to Dane, who was responsible for maintaining the outer perimete
“Eh….”Hanna turned her head around as she felt a familiar ominous feeling. “What is it, Hanna?”“Little Cuttlefish is here, Mommy.”She didn’t know where it was, but she felt its presence. A moment later, a ripple appeared near them and a small slit expanded in midair. An eerie dark feeling seeped out of it as several small tentacles slipped into their world. “Whee!”Nocturne floated toward Hanna making a cheerful noise. “Hiss.”Ancient Wraith hissed at the foreign creature. “Grr….”Nyx growled at the creature in anger, but it didn’t try to attack it. First, Nocturne was Jason’s pet. Second, her little master had no anger toward this thing. However, Nyx knew that the horrible disease had the same scent as this creature. It was a dangerous and foreign feeling that made them uncomfortable. “Gu! Gu!”Nocturne immediately released a defensive sound and hid behind Amelia, trying to protect itself. “Don’t harm Little Cuttlefish. It is not his fault.”Hanna gently patted Nyx’s head
“No! I will not let you go in.”Brood’s voice was sharp and loud, and Jason felt the surrounding air vibrate with her voice. “It is already spreading. Send out one of your Drones and check the caves to the north. There is a crack.”Jason didn’t care about Brood’s rant at the moment. He was much stronger than before. Even if he failed to defeat Brood, he was confident enough to survive against her and escape. Besides, Amelia should be already on her way here. “But… But… This is the only place I am supposed to protect. I… I didn’t let anything escape.”Brood’s voice broke a little as she tried to suppress the agitation. “Check it out. I can feel the monsters roaming beneath those cracks, and it won’t be long before they escape.”“But….”“There is no time. She is coming, and she is angry. So check it out. We will go in there and finish it, Brood. It doesn’t matter if you like it or not. It is too dangerous and we are going to end whatever is down there.”Jason had no idea what kind o
‘This is bad. This is very very bad.’Jason stared at the crack on the ground with a frown. He thought the corrupted land was beneath the spider mines, Brood’s lair. However, it seemed to be extended beyond his scope of imagination. He felt the pulsating mutated life roaming beneath the ground, and he had to use a lot of willpower to suppress himself from roaring. The mutated monster within him smelled the delicacy. Still, alerting them wouldn't be a good thing for them at the moment. Only two Grandmasters were at Light Shone while the others followed the bandit exterminators in secrecy. Only a Grandmaster could face a hunter, and anything above would be too much for this world. The red mist leaking through the crack corroded the mana in the surroundings.‘Is there a way to stop it from spreading? Should I repair the crack? But we better deal with whatever is inside first.’Jason didn't feel like angering Amelia anymore.‘I better see Brood. She must know what happened here before.’H
“You… You are Jason.”“I am.”Jason smiled at the man as he finally opened his eyes. He felt relieved to slip away from Amelia’s fiery gaze. “My… My arm….”The player panicked as he hurriedly inspected his arm. “The wound….”“It is gone now. Honestly, it wasn’t a wound. It was an infection.”Jason shrugged.“What exactly happened? I don’t think you were in Spider Mine.”The lower level of the Spider Mine was a forbidden place. Even if it weren’t, very few would dare to wander into the swarm of spiders. “No, Jason. I was working in the Northern Mine. We had a small quack at the lowest level, and a new crack popped up in the floor.”“And you were the closest to it?”“Yes.”“How big is this crack, did anyone else come into contact with it?”Jason didn’t want to drag out the discussion. This wasn’t exactly unexpected, but an open crack meant there was a hidden space underneath the mine that was contaminated by radiation. He needed to find out how big the hidden space was. ‘I really h
“Jason! We need to see Jason!”“What is going on?”Amelia came out of the house as she heard the loud voice. No one dared to shout in front of their home, and she wondered why Jason’s loyal guards didn’t act. “Madam…!”“Grandmaster Amelia! We… We need help. He can’t log out, and we don't know what to do.”“Hm?”Amelia frowned as he looked at the people from Jason’s world. She knew these were the selected people of the Crystal Pulse. Even though Samson and the other guards prevented this group of people from entering the house, they also looked worried. She looked at the man they brought in, and her eyes widened for a moment. There was a purplish wound on the man’s arm, and a dark purple smoke came out of it. He was groaning in pain and it looked as if the man was going senile with pain. He was twitching and rolling on the ground as the others held him. More people were gathering near their house, and she knew many wanted to know what happened to the fallen man. “Mommy… That unc
“Is it online?”“Yes, Chief.”“How is the reaction?”“I think it looks very violent, Chief. There is an outburst of responses.”“Good.”Despite his words, Magnus’s face showed no hint of comfort. “And Jason?”“He will stay on Yuriel for the time being, Chief. Amelia said she is keeping him there indefinitely. As long as this problem isn’t solved.”“Do you think she knows something?”Magnus rubbed his temple. Technically, there was no way for Jason to know the gaming cabin could transport him to another world. Even if an NPC told him so, it would be impossible to believe. ‘It isn’t like he could handle that kind of secret with such grace.’He believed it would be too much for even a man like Jason Hope. However, Amelia’s behaviour made him suspicious of her knowledge about their world. She knew how to arrange security and cover blindspots against modern weapons. This shouldn’t have happened if Amelia was from a magical world. Besides, her plan looked almost flawless, and even Magn
