"So mother, that is exactly how it happened." Beowulf excitedly narrated his ordeal to his mother. He selectively told her things that he knew won't get her angry. He couldn't tell her about the threat Amoux made. The words he said were something his mother would be worried about. If he mentions the threat, she would want to go to the priests to check if her son would be fine. Even though Beowulf knew most times, the priests only say things that she wants to hear. They might have every spiritual power. They might hear things directly from the gods, but they can't see the future.
"Oh my heaven! Heavenly goddess. You found a woman that interests you?" She asked, smiling and gushing over all of him. She stood up and began dancing the local Atilogwu dance.
"No wait mother, I am interested in all women. She only piqued my interest. She really is a perfect woman." He replied. He drew her close just so she could stop dancing. His mother frowned at him. She sat down on the bed before him.
"You are nothing like your father. He was a loyal man."
"Have you seen me with other women? Can't I just like all women? I only appreciate them from afar,"
"You cannot. See, cheating isn't only when you have sex with other people."
"But mom! I am not even betrothed to any of them yet. Even Ashina, she is someone I like but not married to yet." He argued.
"But that's being a womanizer. Except the priests, no one else is allowed to have two women." His mother replied.
"Not even the ultimate Alpha," Beowulf commented
"Not even your father." Beowulf knew why only the priests were allowed to have two wives. It's something he gets jealous of at times. They have a wife who is to be the mother of their worldly children and women, who will be mother of their spiritual children. These spiritual children are the ones who could become the next priests. Their children whom they had in order to satisfy their lust, were not worthy of being the priests. And this applies to every of the 12 priests who stand as mediators between the goddess and the people.
"And about father, how is he faring?" Beowulf asked.
"He is well enough. He is even glad to know that in a few months time, he will be having a daughter." She replied smiling
"But mom, you really didn't have to let him have a daughter, isn't he sharing more of his will into you?"
"You don't understand it yet. You will understand the happiness of being a father when Ashina gets you one." She said
"Mother!" He cried from cringe.
"But for an Ultimate Alpha to pass on his will, he needs to be at his happiest."
"I know right. And mother, that's why I am scared." Beowulf looked at his mother.
"Mother, I am only a hundred and ten years old. When I become the Ultimate Alpha, I would have to live healthily for the next eighty years. And the strength of my will, will determine if I will live long enough to finish the remaining sixty years of my reign." He said.
"There is no death in your eyes son. It has been a long time since a succeeding Alpha has been the son of the preceding Alpha."
"All the more why we need to be scared," Beowulf argued.
"It's why you should be patient and be at rest. Your will was strong enough. You discovered your "void" at a young age."
"Don't call it void yet if I am not the ultimate Alpha."
"To me son, you are my Alpha. My Ultimate Alpha. You have always been and will remain forever." His mother said. She drew him close, and kissed his forehead. She placed his forehead before hers. Beowulf smiled. At least before he gets his own Luna, the former Luna is perfect. She makes him happy.
In one of his classes with the priest, he had been asked to ask for the kind of woman he wanted. Without any doubt, he had said he wanted a woman like his mother.
"Boy! You are deluded. Blinded by your love for your mother that you perceive her to be the best among women." The Older wolf priest said. The priests are always in their werewolf form. Once they assume their spiritual journey as a priest, they shift to their werewolf form forever. Shifting back to their human form or their Dire Werewolf form is a crime, hence might be killed by blood moon.
"But it is what I want." He argued with the older wolf priest.
"What you want isn't what you need," the priest argued with his raspy voice. His raspy voice didn't come from old age, but it came from countless years of shouting. Calling on names. Chanting of praises and summoning spirituals made his voice become harsh.
"What do you think I need then,"
"You need the best woman for you. You and your father do not have the same personalities. So the women who will be able to handle both of you won't be the same."
"Despite that…"
"It's accepted that you love your mother. But you can ask for a mother like your mother for your children, but your perfect woman. Only your father knows the kind of woman your mother is." The priest had advised.
"Be careful what you ask the goddess,"
But now, with his mother's before him, Beowulf doesn't care. He wants the kind of woman who will make him happy. A woman just like his mother.
"And you think your father would appreciate that you want to take his woman in addition to his life and title?" A voice interrupted their mother and son session.
"Edon!" the Ultimate Luna called. She stayed away from her son and gave a broad smile to the approaching man.
"Oh! Uncle Edon," Beowulf greeted. He stood up and gave his uncle a viking handshake.
"My Lady! Good day. Be in peace," Edon greeted the Luna
"Same to you, Edon. I have asked of you since, where have you been?"
"Places that required my presence," he replied. Edon and Luna looked at each other. Creating a moment of silence. Beowulf expected them to say something. He thought they were going to keep talking and that was why he kept out of the conversation that he thought would ensue.
"And here he is," Beowulf broke the silence
"And here I am," Edon quipped.
"Beowulf! I have something to discuss with your uncle. Why don't you go to your father and tell him of your discovery," she advised.
" Of course mother," Beowulf greeted his uncle one more time and headed to the palace.
Their palace is a different castle than their building. For most days, that's where his father is. His mother does stay at the castle, but once in a while she comes back to this castle. The palace is like an extension of the castle. It has few rooms for sleep and a large court for meetings between all the Alphas of Noguchi. Running at a human speed would take thirty minutes from the castle to the palace. Beowulf only had to run for five minutes before he got there, and that's still not while in his werewolf form. In one of the numerous classes he attended in preparation for his ascension, she heard the story of how the palace was created. Something that once served as a shelter for werewolves during the war of separation. He entered through the main gate as the guards bow before him. Today, he didn't notice the large depiction of a waning moon drawn on a cloth, placed above the entrance of the castle. "Lord Beowulf!" They all greeted him. Even people who were older than him. Every
Ashina didn't gain consciousness at once. She began noticing her surroundings minutes after she woke up. There was no one nearby. She was alone in her room. Just beside her bed, she saw plates and cups that had been used to feed her drugs. She didn't call anyone or try to ask for help. She didn't feel any pain. She doesn't even have a memory of what happened. It's just her on her bed looking lost and empty. After minutes of silence even in her head, she wondered what had gotten her into this condition. "What made me faint?" She asked herself, thinking of possible reasons. It was not like her father had touched her. He beats her when she provokes him but he had never beaten her to the extent where she lost consciousness. It's not like she got diagnosed with any sickness that drained her energy. And she is quite energetic. The doctor has once said. And she had proved it at different times."Oh! Right!" She cried in her head. "I remember. I remember just what it is that happened." She
"Ashina! Who is this man?" He asked in a friendly tone. He didn't come off as angry. Even the guards of the court were not around. The atmosphere wasn't official. She felt relaxed."Father! He is Falcris. Son of Beta Donolf. His father was the one who helped us unravel plots of the Ekun's pack during the last war. We…" "Ashina! I know who his father is. Tell me the relationship between you and the young wolf." Lord Olcan ordered. He stood up from his seat and moved closer towards them."He is a wolf I am interested in, father. I love him." She said to her father with a smile on her face. She moved forward so her father would know how happy she is. She had her hand on her chest. "You love him?" He said. He turned around and smiled."And you Falcris, what do you have to say about that?" Olcan asked Falcris."Lord Olcan. I love your daughter. She is the perfect mate. She is…" Falcris said. He bowed down immediately. He thought it would be disrespectful to talk to Lord Olcan while stand
What is it? What is all this madness?" Lord Olcan asked a raging Amoux. Amoux entered into Lord Olcan's court without the usual formality required. He was to ask for permission from the guards who stood at the door. Either of the guards will go into the castle and ask if Olcan wants to meet with the person or not. But Amoux attacked both guards. They didn't fight him. They only paved the way for him. "You ask your daughter not me!" He fired back at Olcan"My daughter?" Olcan asked. He adjusted his posture on his seat. He sat with his right hand under his chin. His elbow touched his lap and he leaned forward."Your daughter did not only defy me, she disrespected you. And it seems all your policies are a facade," Amoux blurted. Four of the guards rushed toward him. A guard grabbed his right hand. He tried clawing the guard with his left arm, but he got punched in the bicep by another. His punch weakened. Another guard grabbed his arm. Two came from behind and kicked him in his leg.
Apart from fighting, the guards around Olcan were another problem. Even if he was to attack Olcan, they would get to him before he could do that. And this court doesn't support his fighting style. It's a large room with no pillars that he can hang on around. "Lord Olcan, I am betrothed to your daughter. She defied me. Isn't it only natural that I watch you punish her?" "Oh! I see. You were expecting me to punish her?" Olcan stood up. He dusted his clothes. Amoux saw him raise his garment up and…"I won't be punishing my daughter," Amoux heard Olcan speak right beside him."So fast!" Amoux cried within himself. "You are the fool who couldn't win the heart of my daughter in the last four months. Let her belong to the person who captivates her heart," Lord Olcan said."And you won't be standing when I am beside you," Olcan inhaled and shivered. Amoux felt pain in his nostrils. It went from his nostrils right to his brain. A shrill pain. An instinct that told him how much of a danger h
Ashina is all alone in her room, sleeping. She doesn't know anything going on around her, not to talk of things going on miles from her. The Ultimate Alpha and his brother sat down in their court room. Worried about why Beowulf had to fall in love with the daughter of Olcan. They know of the relationship between their pack and Olcan. "You think Olcan would agree?" Adalwolf asked. "Would he have another choice?" Audolf smiled."It's not about that. You know what have happened," "You should not be the one scared. You did nothing wrong," Audolf consoled his elder brother. "Yes! I know," Adalwolf replied. He appears as old as the oldest priest in Noguchi but he is the same age as Olcan. They used to know each other and be friends while they were young. But position and family made each other realize that they can't be friends forever. One has to hate on each other. Olcan Pack has to hate on the Ultimate pack. It's compulsory. It's necessary. It's inevitable and only so much can be d
Ashina woke up from her bath tub calmly. She stood up slowly. The water in her bathtub has emptied. She had removed the little knob that connects it to the drainage before she slept. She would not like to drown. When she even wanted to die, death didn't come. And now there is a reason for her to live. There is a ray of hope in her existence, and she didn't want to die yet. "This feeling I had, was it what Cathulf and others were talking about?" She asked herself."These maids have really gone beyond what I have felt. We need to discuss more. Especially when it comes to charming men," she concluded. She stood up and went closer to her bed. She could hear faint sounds of people arguing from her father's courtroom. "God knows what they are talking about now!" She picked up the cloth on a stand beside her bed. She wore it. She went to her mirror. She straightened her hair. Put on her scarf and put it around her neck. She left her room, heading towards her mother's room. "Lady Ashina!"
Even though the fear and surprise in Ashina cannot be contained by mere apology or assurance, she tried to calm herself. She loves her brother and the maids. She believed no wolf should ever die by Blood moon. After her last lover died by it. It still traumatizes her but there isn't anything to be done. She can cry about it for all she wants. Whine till heaven falls, there is nothing to be done. But with the presence of Beowulf. A new lover she met who hasn't shown interest in her. She should not dream far, but she believed if he ever chose her to be his mate, that making her a Luna, she would put a stop to using blood moon to kill. And as a Luna, she will arrest her father and ask him why he hates the Ultimate pack so much. If possible she would punish him for killing her first love. And Amoux, she will make sure he suffers. "Am I day dreaming?" She laughed at herself. "But it's allowed, right? After all these years, having this sort of feeling, I need to savor it the best way I
