Standing by the fountain, I still couldn’t believe I was here. Amber had invited me on a date. A date? With all the girls in our squad, she chose me? It made no sense.
A gust of wind rustled the trees, and I found myself replaying the ridiculous memory from earlier in the week.
…
“You… Me… Date… Saturday.”
Amber’s words hit me like a truck. I blinked at her, processing.
“You must be joking. It’s not April Fools' Day, so don’t say something ridiculous like that.” I continued my daily routine of push-ups in our hideout.
She crossed her arms. “Are you deaf, idiot? I said we’re going on a date.”
I glanced at Amber’s serious expression.
Is she serious? I mean, she’s cute, and I’d love to go on a date with a girl like her. But after everything we’ve been through, I hardly see her as just a girl... Maybe this is another test? They’re all girls—maybe she wants to see if I’d make a move on any of them. Well, I’m not someone who falls in love so easily. So the right answer is to reject her.
I shook my head. “No way I’m going out with you.”
Amber’s fist slammed into my gut, knocking the air out of me.
“Wrong answer!!”
Wrong answer?!
For some reason, Amber was actually serious, and I had no choice but to accept—or risk another fist flying into my stomach.
…
So here I was, waiting for her in the community park, rubbing my stomach at the thought.
I arrived early; I didn’t want to be late. That’s dating basics for men. A man should always arrive first. It’s not cool to make a girl wait.
After some time, Amber arrived.
She walked up, wearing something completely different from her usual tough, combat-ready outfit. A simple dress, light and flowing, with her pinkish hair down.
I just notice that her hair is pinkish and not Red.
Amber was… cute.
Honestly, way too cute.
I stared at her, stunned. “You look—”
“Say something dumb, and I’m punching you again.”
I smirked. “Nice weather today.”
Amber grabbed my hand without a second thought.
I was shocked by the gesture, but she didn’t seem to care. If I got flustered, it’d be uncool. So, I played it cool.
Men should always be cool.
Amber rolled her eyes, but I caught the hint of a smile. “Come on, loser. We’re going to the arcade first.”
Arcade immediately, I was looking forward for a movie, but if she wanted to go on an arcade first. Then, I can’t argue. Or else another fist will be launch to me stomach.
The arcade was loud, bright, and full of energy. Amber wasted no time dragging me to a shooting game.
“Alright, whoever loses buys dinner.”
I shrugged. “Fine by me.”
We started, and within seconds, I realized Amber was a menace. She shot targets with pinpoint accuracy, barely giving me a chance.
“That’s the skill of a secret agent…”
“Losers always have excuses. Show me that you’re a man.” Amber handed me the toy gun.
“I hate losing,” I said and confidently fired at the targets.
I tried to keep up, but by the time the game ended, she had nearly doubled my score.
I lost. Very uncool.
“Ha! Pay up, loser.”
I groaned. “You rigged it.”
She smirked. “Oh? Want a rematch?”
“Let’s play another game instead!” I suggested. Shooting games weren’t my thing. I’d challenge her in something I was actually good at.
“I won’t back down.”
We spent the next hour competing in various games, and while I managed to win a few, Amber was surprisingly skilled at nearly everything. Fighting games? Rhythm games? Skeeball? Destroyed me. Racing games? She sent my car flying off the track. But when we got to the claw machine, things took a turn.
Amber’s eyes lit up when she spotted a giant teddy bear inside the machine. “I want it.”
For the first time, I saw her acting like a normal girl.
I remembered Mio... My ex-girlfriend loved plushies, and I always got her one on special occasions. It was a sweet memory. Looking back on it now, though, it just felt… heavy.
I raised an eyebrow. “Looks like hot-headed Amber is still a girl at heart.”
She ignored me. “Problem is… that’s a couple’s claw machine.”
I squinted at the sign. “Only couples can play?”
Amber tapped her chin. “Alright, new plan. We pretend to be a couple.”
I nearly choked. “Excuse me?”
“Shut up and act natural.” She grabbed my arm and dragged me to the counter. “Hey, we want to play for the bear.”
The clerk, an older guy with an amused look, eyed us. “Gotta prove you’re a couple first.”
Amber and I exchanged glances. “Proof?” I asked.
He smirked. “Kiss.”
Silence. My brain short-circuited. I turned to Amber, who was suddenly just as frozen as me, her face turning red.
“T-That’s ridiculous!” she sputtered.
“Rules are rules,” the clerk said with a shrug.
Amber and I locked eyes.
Wait. Are we actually going to kiss?
“I hate this,” Amber muttered.
Then she clenched her fists. “Forget it! Keep your dumb bear!” She stormed off, her face redder than I’d ever seen it.
I followed, laughing. “So close, yet so far.”
“Shut up, Noah!”
After our arcade misadventures, we went to a nice restaurant to forget the embarrassing incident. After the restaurant we go on a movie. It’s a romance movie, but I thought a girl will love it, but Amber simply fell asleep in the entire movie.
“The movie is done?”
“Yeah, its the credits already…”
“We should watch super rangers instead next time.” Amber suggested.
“Yeah, we’ll do that next time.”
She like those kind of movie? Her taste is like of a kid.
Without noticing time flew by.
For the first time, Amber wasn’t the fierce agent leading a squad into battle. She was just… Amber. Laughing, joking, and enjoying.
I also discovered that Amber was a massive eater. With everything she devoured, I wondered where all that food went. She was so slender, after all.
Later, as we sat on a park bench, the sun beginning to set, I reflected on the day. I never imagined going on a date with her would be this fun.
“Did you have fun?” Amber asked.
“Of course. I got to go on a date with a pretty girl. Why wouldn’t I be happy?”
Amber hugged herself.
“Gueehhh… You’re creepy. Boys really are simple creatures. Don’t get any ideas—I don’t have feelings for you. That would be disgusting.”
Amber really does look down on me. Well, maybe, I’m not boyfriend material.
“I won’t. I’m still on my journey of recovery, after all.”
“Recovery? From your ex-girlfriend?”
“I did mention it before. I think I still love her, but I have to move forward. I’m doing my best—school, helping the team.”
“Just forget about her. She’s probably moved on already. Maybe, she already love somebody else and now they are kissing each other passionately.”
“Don’t say something so harsh and stupid! Mio is not like that!”
Amber giggled before turning serious. “You ever wonder why we do all this?”
“You mean being secret agents?”
She nodded. “At first, we just wanted to get money to survive. But… we’ve actually helped a lot of people. That’s why I keep going.”
I leaned back. “Everyone needs money.”
“What were you doing before, Noah?”
“Before I met you guys, my life was pretty empty. No future, no motivation. Maybe that’s why Mio left me.”
I look at my hand and make a fist.
“My ability is called World rejector… I have the ability to reject anything and make it dissapear. But in some sense, sometime I felt like the world rejected me first.”
Amber smirked. “That’s pretty dramatic… What do you think of the team? Want to continue?”
After the incident similar to teacher Nana and terrorist working in shadows. I think have the responsibility to stop them.
This ability bestowed to me must’ve greater meaning.
“I’ll continue… I’ll join you and everyone in helping everyone. Just like a hero.”
Amber suddenly leaned closer. “A hero? Its so childish… but I like it.”
Before I could react, she kissed my cheek.
“W-What was that?!”
She grinned. “A reward. For being cool these past few days.”
Reward?
“Still, don’t think I have a feelings for you okay. Don’t tell to anyone in the team.” Amber flex her right fist. “If you say something about it, I’ll launch this fist straight to your face until you became so ugly no one will date you ever again.”
“Scary! Please don’t!”
“Good! Good! As long as were in good terms.”
After that we separated ways and walked home, my heart pounded after her kiss, but I couldn’t wipe the stupid grin off my face.
