Chapter 4: First Mission

One week had passed since I met Amber and the others.

It was still surreal. One moment I was an average nobody, floating through life, and the next I was being dragged into a secret world of chaos and danger.

Flare. That’s what they called themselves. A secret agency of Dark Side Agents working from the shadows to keep Neo Silicon Valley from collapsing in on itself. They took on the threats nobody else wanted to deal with—rogue ability users, cyber-terrorists, organized crime syndicates.

At first, it was terrifying. Then… it got exciting.

Maybe keeping busy like this was what I needed. If I had to outrun my own thoughts, then I wouldn’t have time to think about her.

Mio.

I clenched my jaw as her name floated through my mind. No matter how hard I trained or how much I distracted myself, she always found a way to sneak back in.

I sighed. No use dwelling on it.

I still owed Amber for dragging me into this world, even if she’d claim I did it to myself. Most of the last few days had been spent training. Endless running, drills, sparring, and ability control exercises. At first, I thought I’d be sent on missions right away. I imagined myself as some cool action hero, saving lives and taking names.

But nope.

Errand boy. Personal assistant. Amber’s own private lackey.

“Go grab lunch, Noah.”

“Clean up the training hall, Noah.”

“Oh, and Noah? Don’t screw up, or I’ll erase you.”

Okay, she didn’t say that last part. But I could feel it in her smirk.

Still, the others had been surprisingly helpful. Sion taught me basic combat maneuvers, while Emma ran me through strategies. Lynn focused on my reaction time, and Mei, well… Mei just enjoyed blasting me with her fireballs to “test my defense.”

It was exhausting. But I was improving.

And for the first time in a long time, I felt like I was someone.

Not just Mio’s ex-boyfriend.

Not just a loser.

Someone.

Today was supposed to be my rest day. So naturally, I found myself sitting in a coffee shop after my morning run, bone tired but mentally restless.

The same coffee shop.

The same table.

The same spot where Mio had broken up with me.

I stared at the dark surface of my coffee, watching my reflection ripple with every movement of the liquid. The smell of roasted beans filled the air—comforting and familiar—but it did little to ease the tightness in my chest.

“What kind of future awaits me now?” I muttered under my breath.

Back then, I was just a regular guy. No powers. No prospects. Nothing to offer.

And she saw that.

And she left.

But now?

Now I had World Rejecter. An ability that defied reason. I could erase anything in existence just by touching it.

I could be a god.

I could be a monster.

“If I wanted to… I could erase anyone who wronged me,” I whispered.

The thought scared me.

It wasn’t who I was.

I wasn’t a villain.

I wasn’t one of the bad guys.

I forced myself to breathe. Calm down.

I wouldn’t let my power define me.

I would define my power.

And then fate, cruel as always, decided to test me.

She walked in.

Mio.

My heartbeat quickened. Same brown hair, tied back neatly like it always was. Same quiet gaze. She looked around, casual, almost bored, until her eyes landed on me.

For a brief second, I thought I saw something there.

Recognition?

Regret?

No.

She looked past me like I was invisible.

Like I was nobody.

I clenched my fists under the table.

If I became great… if I proved myself… would Mio and I be together again?

The thought echoed in my mind, even though I hated it.

Even though I knew it was foolish.

But part of me still wanted that answer.

I stood up, half-planning to walk over, to say something—anything.

And then my phone rang.

“Yeah?”

Amber’s voice crackled through. “Noah, get your butt moving. We’ve got a mission.”

“Seriously?” I sighed.

“I’m not kidding, dumbass. Sion’s already on the way. An ability user’s hijacked a department store and taken hostages. He controls machines, so it’s messy.”

My stomach dropped.

I glanced out the window.

The department store—right across the street.

And Mio was here.

“Send me the location,” I said.

“It’s the department store across from where you—oh. You’re already there. Great. Don’t screw up.”

She hung up.

I was already moving.

Sion met me by the basement entrance. She barely spared me a glance.

“You ready?” she asked.

“I was born ready,” I lied.

We slipped inside.

The basement reeked of burnt plastic and ozone. The lights flickered overhead as we crept through.

There, in the middle of the room, stood a hulking robot, easily twice my height, its eyes glowing crimson.

And next to it, a man.

Leaning casually against a steel pillar, sparks dancing between his fingertips.

He grinned when he saw us. “Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in. Amber’s little playthings.”

Sion stepped forward, arms crossed.

“Surrender. You’re outmatched.”

The man chuckled. “I don’t think so.”

In an instant, lightning burst from his fingers, arcing toward us.

“Sion!” I shouted, diving away.

The bolt scorched the air where we’d just stood.

Sion retaliated immediately. Her fingers flicked, sending razor-sharp wind slashes at him.

But they shattered before they could touch him.

He held up his hand, grinning. “Nice try. But—”

“Shut up,” Sion cut in.

She moved faster than I could follow, appearing behind him in a flash. Her leg whipped out, a brutal roundhouse aimed at his skull.

But the moment her foot made contact—

CRACK!

A burst of electricity exploded.

Sion flew back, crashing into a metal rack.

“Sion!”

I ran forward.

The man snapped his fingers. Lightning raced toward me.

I reacted on instinct.

“Reject.”

The bolt vanished before it reached me.

The man’s eyes widened.

He tried again.

Nothing.

I kept moving forward.

His lightning meant nothing to me.

“You… what are you?” he hissed.

I clenched my fists. “The guy who’s going to end this.”

He snarled. “Fine.”

The robot beside him powered up, servos whirring.

It aimed a cannon directly at me.

“Die!”

A massive energy blast fired.

“Reject.”

The blast ceased to exist.

I wasn’t done.

I closed the distance, reaching out and touching the robot’s leg.

Gone.

The machine toppled, half its body erased in an instant.

“WHAT?!”

The man stumbled back. “No—that’s not teleportation—that’s—”

A gust of wind slammed him into the wall.

Sion stood, wiping blood from her lip.

“You talk too much.”

Wind ribbons coiled around his limbs, pinning him in place.

Electricity sparked wildly, but she tightened the bonds.

“Move wrong, and I’ll cut off your head,” she said coolly.

The fight was over.

The hostages were safe.

Mio… she’d never know.

Maybe that was fine.

Outside of New Silicon Valley, in the ruins of what was once the European countryside, stood a temple untouched by time and war. A sanctuary for those who despised the existence of ability users. They called themselves the White Cult.Inside the grand, candlelit chamber, robed figures knelt in silence. At the altar, a young woman in pristine white vestments stood, hands delicately clasped as if in prayer. Her silver hair shimmered under the soft glow of flickering flames, and her blue eyes held an ethereal serenity. This was White—their revered leader, the chosen voice of their so-called divinity.Yet, beneath the gentle facade, something flickered.A kneeling disciple, drenched in sweat, trembled before her. “The operation in New Silicon Valley… it has failed. The ability user was captured.”White’s expression did not falter. This had to be hard for her too. No doubt.I needed to end this awkwardness somehow.“Your little sister still thinks you and I are together,” she said, holding up a paper bag. “She made a mistake and sent a parcel to my place again. I came here to deliver it.”She handed the paper bag over carefully.“Thanks… Sorry for the trouble. I’ll explain everything to my sister soon.”“No need,”
