"She’s always been like this, ever since I reached an age where I could understand things!” I said.
“I’m sorry that you had to go through so much because of them, and I apologize for misunderstanding all of you for such a long time.” I whispered as his hand gently touched my shoulder.
My eyes widened; it was fascinating to see how they had lived such different lives, even in hiding. I can only imagine the immense challenges they must have faced.
We sat together in silence, or maybe he wasn’t even sitting at all or maybe he wasn’t there anymore. All I know is that he answered most of my questions. The only thing that still troubled me was a strange longing to see him, to truly know him. I knew it could potentially put him in danger, but the heart wants what it wants.
“What’s your name?” I asked.
“Jarred, they call me Jarred!” he replied.
“I’m Zaria, Zaria Dove!” I introduced myself. And that was just the beginning; we talked for hours until I eventually fell asleep right there.
The next day, I felt so happy, finally finding someone who could make sense of everything. I didn’t bother anyone, and strangely enough, the fact that I didn’t bother anyone seemed to bother everyone the most.
Especially, my mom, she had a hard time accepting that I was just like everyone else. But despite her struggles, Jarred and I kept meeting up, and with each encounter, I discovered more and more fascinating things about his life. It was during one of these meetings that something unexpected happened - we started developing feelings for each other.
As usual, we were sitting together one evening, engrossed in conversation, when he shared a story that I had never heard before.
“Do you like looking at the stars?” I asked.
“Stargazing?” he repeated. “There’s this island not too far away. It has a field full of flowers, and if you walk barefoot, the grass tickles your feet in the most amazing way. I promise to take you there someday.
We’ll lie in that field together, and I’ll show you the true magic of stargazing. When the clouds pass beneath the stars, it feels like you’re drifting along with them, as if you’re sailing on the surface of a calm sea.”
His words transported me to a different world, a place I could imagine even though I had never been there. I longed to experience everything he described, and in the midst of our shared imagination, we found ourselves holding hands. In that moment, I realized that his presence was just as real and genuine as anyone else’s.
“I want to see you,” I whispered.
He stayed quiet, but his hand slowly moved away from mine. “I’m sorry,” I murmured. “I shouldn’t have...” Guilt washed over me for making him uncomfortable.
Suddenly, I felt him walking away, his footsteps echoing in the distance. Then, right in front of me, a shimmering golden figure appeared, revealing a man dressed entirely in a blue leather suit. Even his head was covered in the same fabric.
He grabbed the top of his mask and pulled it off, revealing a man with tousled blond hair. His hair was messy from wearing the mask, but he tucked his mask into his belt loop and ran his fingers through his hair. When he looked up, I couldn’t tear my eyes away. His gray eyes held me captive.
Every aspect of his face was flawlessly perfect, causing me to blush and look down at the ground. “What?” he asked with a smile.
“It’s just... when I heard about the unseen, I pictured monsters, animals, maybe even aliens... but I never imagined...” I trailed off, turning away.
“What didn’t you imagine?” he prodded.
“I never imagined that you would be so beautiful!” I whispered, though he heard me. After a brief moment of silence, he slipped his hand into mine.
He had taken off his gloves, and I felt his bare skin against mine. He turned me around and gently lifted my chin with his finger. As I sensed him getting closer, I closed my eyes, and then... we kissed.
That marked the beginning of our love story, a tale filled with countless hours of being wrapped in each other’s arms, expressing our love in every possible way. Time seemed to blur as days turned into months, and my deepest fear transformed into the star I desired the most.
After a long and exhausting day, I sought solace in his embrace, finding refuge from the troubles that burdened me. Together, we would spend hours practicing, finding joy in this unforgiving world.
However, everything took a drastic turn on one fateful night.
As we finished our practice session, I noticed a sense of distraction in his behavior.
“I need to tell you something,” he said, gripping my hands tightly. His invisibility shield, which he used to wear when teaching me how to defend myself from enemies like Type C and his own people, was still activated.
“Have you ever noticed the island behind you?” he asked. I turned around and nodded, acknowledging the elevated spot overlooking our building.
“There’s a hidden sanctuary there. If you ever find yourself in need of help and I’m not around to protect you, go there,” he explained. Confusion filled my mind as I questioned where he was going.
“Just listen,” he pleaded, his worry evident.
“I don’t know why, but something feels off. I think you might need to seek refuge there.” He held onto my hands tightly.
Though fear consumed me, I tried to reassure him.
“Promise me, Zaria! If anything happens to me, you’ll go to my people,” he urged, blurting out his request.
Fear gripped me as I responded, “Nothing will happen to you!” But no words could ease his worries.
“Sprite Harbor” leaving me perplexed as I struggled to comprehend the situation. “This is the code. They will let you pass. Please, just promise me,” he insisted, tightening his grip on my hands.
“Okay, I promise!” I reassured him, gently cupping his face. “You don’t need to worry, Jarred.” With caution, I removed his mask and planted a tender kiss on his lips. He kissed me back, this seemed to be only thing that calmed him, but suddenly, he gasped and emitted a small sound resembling a hiccup.
Concerned, I pulled back and noticed blood trickling from his mouth. My attention shifted to my mother, who stood behind him, clutching a pike in her hand. The pike was lodged in the center of his chest.
In an instant, his struggle for breath made his body visible, leaving me speechless. I tried to hold onto him, but my mother forcefully pulled me away, causing me to fall. Suddenly, a powerful force emerged from the stairs and took him away. Desperately, I pleaded, "He might still be alive!" But a man approached and heartlessly shot him multiple times. I sat on the ground, feeling numb with tears streaming down my face. Thick handcuffs were placed around my wrists, and I lost consciousness. When I woke up, I found myself in a sterile white room surrounded by doctors. I was restrained to a stretcher with a metal bar, and my wrists were secured with cuffs. Still disoriented, my head spinning, I felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen. I turned my head and saw Jarred's lifeless body hanging from his handcuffed hands, attached to two circular metal bars. He was only wearing ordinary shorts, stained with dried blood. Behind him, a large screen displayed incomprehensible images. Drugged a
After sobbing for hours, I somehow managed to drift off to sleep. When I finally woke up, I was startled to discover that not only were the cages open, but they were also completely empty. Ever since I arrived in this place, I had noticed a peculiar bump on the ground right in the center of my cell. Curiosity got the better of me, so I knelt down and gave it a knock. To my surprise, I realized that there was a hidden space beneath the ground. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any tools or means to dig or break through the ground, so I decided to leave it for the time being. With caution, I made my way out of the cell and soon realized that all the other cages were also empty, except for the ones housing the infected individuals. Strangely, there were no bars in sight. Suddenly, I heard the faint sound of people chattering. Intrigued, I followed the noise, which led me to a wide and spacious stairwell-like area. Each step had four cages - two on the left, two on the right, and a middle
He suddenly lunged at me, grabbing my throat and pushing me against the wall. "If you haven't noticed, I am not here to harm you! But that doesn't mean that I can't," he growled, his teeth clenched. "The wounded are more like to get infected to the virus than those who come into physical contact with an infected one. If you want to get sick, go ahead. But my orders are to keep you stable until we find a suitable match." With that, he let go of my throat. Realizing that fighting back was pointless, I gave in. As he examined the wound on my forehead, he took out a small spray bottle and applied it to my skin, causing it to itch and burn. Surprisingly, the bleeding stopped. He then handed me some syrup and flashed a smile. "You can't seriously be thinking of escaping through this heavily fortified door," he remarked, raising an eyebrow. "I'm not doing it to escape!" I locked eyes with him, determination burning in my gaze. "I have a message that needs to be delivered." The realization
Amidst my tireless training, one day as Nina and I sat next to each other, she suddenly pointed out the obvious. "Your hair is getting longer!" she exclaimed. Without thinking, I absentmindedly touched my hair and replied, "I hadn't even noticed!" Our bond grew incredibly strong, almost like siblings. Even though I've never had a sister, being around her feels just as special. I think this is how it would feel like having a sister, as long as she's nothing like my mother! On the other hand, Nina is lucky to have a younger sister named Alice, whom she absolutely adores. Nina's warm-hearted nature makes me grateful to have her as a friend. It's truly amazing to have a girl with the same vibrant energy in my life. As we chatted away, I took a few more bites and suddenly felt something strange in my mouth. I reached in with my finger and thumb to take it out, but it made me gag and vomit. There was a small opening at the end of the canteen, and through it, I caught a glimpse of Enzo l
Initially, the thought of such a revolution frightened me. But now, when I get to know you, I started to question myself, isn’t tearing down this flawed system what we all truly need? We are all victims of manipulation, not just women. If you dig deeper, you’ll understand why I say that. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to explain it all to you. What you do need to know is that the easiest way to manipulate someone is through praise, and we all crave it. But now, with a clearer vision, I see that I am one of those who has been manipulated. I take full responsibility for my part in perpetuating this cycle. Despite how incredibly annoying you’ve been, I feel honored to make this announcement. In the upcoming tournament, I have decided to let you win. Not because you are incapable of winning on your own, but because they have done far worse and they have the power to make you lose, and because your victory is crucial in this situation.” He approached me closely and locked eyes wit
Alice, who had been watching everything from her cage, came up to us with a curious look in her eyes. "Why do they let us out of our cages?" she asked innocently, wanting answers. I reached out my hand toward her, and she willingly came closer. As I held her hand, a smile appeared on my face. "Do you see that?" I pointed to the small panel next to the door. "They communicate with us through that. Just before inspection, we're told to go back inside for five minutes. After that, they lock us in to make sure we don't try to escape." I explained to her. "Have you ever tried to escape?" she asked. "No, I haven't," I replied with a smile. "My dad always told me that I'm her lion. Lions don't run away, they fight." Curiosity filled her eyes as she questioned, "Where is your dad?" Instead of answering, a single tear rolled down my cheek. Sensing my sadness, she gently my wiped tear away. "It's okay, I know how it feels. When they took me away from my home, I heard a gunshot," she said s
To my surprise, her hand held a paper with a doodle on it. In the middle of the page, there was a simple stick figure, while behind it was a doodle of a towering building. In front of the figure, there was a captivating formation resembling an inverted mountain. It appeared as if the stick figure was leaping towards the inverted mountain. Out of the blue, two women entered the room, dressed in elegant silk gowns. Their long, red curls flowed down their backs, and their flawless, milky white skin seemed almost otherworldly. But what caught my attention were the blindfolds tightly wrapped around their eyes. Each woman held a bag in her hands, adding an aura of mystery to their presence. They reached out their hands towards me, and I took hold of them as they guided me out of the prison. As we made our way towards freedom, I couldn’t resist stealing one final glance at the prison, filled with numerous faces peering through the bars, their hopes resting on my triumph. When the women
As my senses came back to me, I couldn't help but notice the strange condition of the horses. They were not only completely bald, but they also had deep cuts next to their ears. It was clear that something was wrong. As I focused on the track ahead, I was shocked to see a massive wall stretching from left to right. It seemed impossible to go around it, and my attempts to turn the horse were useless. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew my cape away and it wrapped around a champion's face, causing him to stumble and fall. With no more distractions, I fixed my eyes on the formidable wall in front of me. Summoning all my strength, I stood up on the horse's back, which was incredibly challenging. The wall looked deceptively thin, almost like glass, but it was covered in menacing spikes. Despite the difficulty, I managed to keep my balance as the horse got closer to the wall. Without hesitation. I took a daring leap, with the dive my hands held the top of the wall as I cartwheeled and gracefu
