Chapter 27: Spiked

“And why would you do that?” Rebecca asked, suspicious.

Jay sighed, giving her a sad smile. “I owe you an apology, too. For how I used to act. I chased you around for so long, not accepting that you didn’t feel the same.”

He leaned in, his gaze locking onto hers. “So now, I’d like to make it up to you instead.”

His voice was calm, but something dark lingered beneath his words.

But Rebecca failed to recognize it.

“Fine,” she said, a small smile returning. “But just a light one.”

Jay grinned and ordered a light drink from the bartender, who quickly prepared it and passed the glass to him.

“Hey, I think you got a text,” Jay said, nodding toward her phone. “The screen lit up.”

Rebecca picked it up, frowning. “No notification here. Maybe you’re just seeing things.”

Jay shrugged. “Maybe I am. Anyway, here’s your drink.”

He slid the glass toward her and raised his own.

“Cheers?” Jay asked, smiling.

Rebecca clinked her glass with his. “Cheers.”

They both took a sip, and Rebecca finished he
