Chapter 71: Investigation

Oliver followed where Ray was looking, and his eyes narrowed upon seeing a familiar guy sitting on the couch.

It was Ryan, who had a genuine smile on his face despite having tons of bandages all over his body.

“You were shocked, weren't you?” Ryan asked, his voice weak yet authoritative.

Melissa and Ray thought of the same thing. After all, Oliver just came to Ryan’s burial.

He would be confused to see Ryan, the one they were mourning with at the burial earlier, was now in front of him, alive and kicking.

However, what happened afterward was the complete opposite.

Oliver sat beside Ryan and smirked. “Why would I be shocked if I know you’re still alive?”

“What?” Ryan blinked in surprise. “What do you mean, you know?”

Ray, who had planned everything, froze in his spot.

“Did I overlook something that made you think he’s alive?” Ray asked, the worry evident on his face. “Do the enemies also know he’s still alive?”

He referred to Zayne.

“No. I’m certain right now that it’s only me,” answer

Because you can’t. You’re going to die here,” the man said.At first, Ryan couldn’t understand the sense behind the man’s words. But as he saw the man going back to the car he used, taking a gas container, and pouring its contents on Ryan’s car, Ryan couldn’t help but shiver.“He’s planning to burn me alive…” Ryan froze in his spot upon the realization. “Help! “And that’s what happened,” Melissa said, ending the story. “I provided a helicopter for Ray as he said that he couldn’t bring Sir Ryan to the hospital.”Oliver looked at Ray, his expression laced with warning and confusion at the same time.“I know we have other hideouts safer than this, but this became my best choice,” Ray confessed. He added, “You know that this is the only safe house that has all the medicines we need. Ryan was in a critical situation at that time, and so am I. This place could heal us.”Although that specific safe house was dangerous because of the monsters hiding in the forest, it was also the Legion V’s sanctuary at the same time. Some of the plants at the forest were poisonous, but most of them had healing capabilities that could cure a person’s wound much faster than any scientific medicine could do.Even the air, which is fresher than the mini-villages and the capital, could give someone peace. They may not know how, but everyone could feel it.“If I broug

I don’t think he will betray me.”Ryan smiled and shook his head.“I didn’t say that he betrayed you, Oliver. I’m just saying he’s strange,” Ryan said, trying to lessen the negative thoughts.“Maybe there’s another reason—something only you can ask,” he added. “Although he brought u

Realizing the situation, Ray cursed in his mind and moved quickly to save Ryan.He did, although they were still somehow caught in the explosion.“If only I decided quickly, not only would I save Ryan, but I would also manage to retrieve that document,” Ray confessed, sighing. “Leaving that envelope isn’t a part of my plan. It may be hard to believe, but I’m telling the truth.”Ray looked away. It hurt him that Oliver was doubting his loyalty, but Ray couldn’t blame him.His reactions and movements may be suspicious to everyone else, but that’s just him being extra careful.“I trust you, but I have a hard time trusting the people around you,” said Ray in a low tone. “But I know I did the wrong thing by almost letting him die. I’m sorry.”Oliver smiled, patting Ray on the shoulder. “You don’t need to apologize to me. I’m not the one you hurt. It should be Ryan.”“Right…” Ray showed a small smile. “I should, so I can clear up our misunderstandings as well.”With Oliver nodding, the sile

I’ll go back as soon as it’s done.”“No worries,” Oliver reassured. “You should go now.”“Thank you, Commander.”Melissa didn’t waste any more time. She went to the helicopter and used it to fly back to the Legion.“You should also take a rest now, Ryan,” commanded Oliver in a gentle tone. “So you could return to the Williams Corporation in no time.”“I understand.” Ryan nodded before going back to his room with Ray accompanying him. With his observant nature, Ryan immediately understood that Oliver wanted him out of the picture for now so he and Ray could talk alone.‘They are teammates, and they have been working with each other’s sides for a long time,’ Ryan thought.‘But why is something bothering me? Why do I feel like a crucial thing is missing?’“I heard that Legion V saved you before,” Ray said, snapping Ryan from his thoughts. “But is that enough reason for you to be loyal to our c

“Do you think the idea came from me? I don’t even know how Oliver thinks, nor how the Legion moves,” Zayne’s boss said upon answering the call.“What?” Zayne asked, his brows furrowed in confusion. Then, he realized something.“This idea… came from our ally from the Legion itself?”“Right,” his boss confirmed. “He is helping you by limiting Oliver’s movements for now as they didn’t have a backup, so you can move freely.”He added, “I didn’t know why he was doing this, even though I reported the mistake you made by having Ryan Williams killed. But I guess you should take it as a second chance.”“Maybe he realized that it should be done, and it wasn’t a mistake,” Zayne said, his tone slightly arrogant.“Anyway, if that’s all, I’ll end the call now.”And before his boss could argue, Zayne already ended the call. That was the first time Zayne did it, and it felt liberating. Oliver was right. The storm hit their place, making it harder for helicopters to fly.It even gave them difficulty walking in the forest as the path became slippery. But if Oliver is determined to cross that path, no one can stop him; neither do they.“From what I’ve heard before, we could re

Melvin was willing to do everything for his brother, despite him turning out as someone beyond his expectations.Oliver smirked, letting go of Melvin. “Alr

A realization hit Oliver as soon as he said those words. Those people were just lurking in the shadows, and if Seraphine remembered their faces, they would take her instantly.‘I need to warn her,’ Oliver thought, ready to leave the room.To his shock, a man went to the door, blocking it to prevent Oliver from exiting the janitorial department.“Melvin,” Oliver called, his brows furrowing. “What are you doing?”“You’re curious whether the robbers who stole the drugs that night were employees at the Capital hall, right?” he asked, his lips curving into a smirk.“What if I tell you that you’re in front of one of them now?”Oliver froze upon hearing those words. The betrayal felt like hot water upon his skin.“Yeah. You hear it right. I’m one of them,” said Melvin in a mocking tone. “But I’m not the one who hurt Seraphine. It was the other one—”Before Melvin could finish his sentence, Oliver slammed him to the door, his right hand gripping tightly onto Melvin’s neck.“You bastard!” Oliv

“Crap,” Seraphine uttered, her hands touching the bruises on her neck, feeling the fear she had at that time.Earlier, she lied to the higher-ups when they asked for her statement.Even though she saw the robbers’ faces, if they asked why she couldn’t remember them, it would blow up something she was trying to hide. The powder on the handkerchief—it was drugs. It was the mere reason she got dizzy after consuming it.Seraphine knew how many people were waiting for her to mess up, so she could throw her from the Capital Hall. This could be the greatest opportunity for those people to fire her from Capital Hall. And that’s the last thing Seraphine wanted to happen.“Wait…” Seraphine suddenly stopped in her tracks, realizing that she overlooked a major detail. “No one saw the CCTV footage?”At that time, she was certain that Oliver already left the storage area, and it meant that the member who helped him, whoever it was, left the Capital Hall as well.‘If that’s the case… could someone

That’s the most important thing.”That’s what Seraphine heard Oliver say inside a room that was only accessible to her—the only person authorized for the drugs hidden in the Capital hall. But Oliver being inside a restricted room wasn’t the reason for her being frozen. It’s the fact that he could see Oliver Wellington’s face, but the way he moved and talked made her realize it was a different person.A person that was familiar to her since they had been together for a long time.“Oliver… Hunt?” she muttered, her eyes and mouth widening in shock. “Could it be him?”She had her suspicions at first, but she ignored them, thinking that Oliver was just an ordinary person trying to survive. But seeing him right now doing something like this gave Seraphine a painful realization; She was deceived.Pulling her gun, he was about to approach him but stopped when a security guard entered the room and immediately scanned it.Seraphine stooped in

"You vanished, Oliver. For three years, we thought you were dead. Do you know what that did to us?"Oliver's jaw clenched. He had imagined this conversation countless times, but nothing prepared him for the pain in Seraphine’s eyes.He even overlooked the fact that Seraphine said the word ‘us’ instead of ‘me’."I didn’t choose to leave. The call was from Juan, his boss at the Capital Hall. He used a different number and not his personal one.Frowning, Oliver answered the call. “Hello, Sir?”“Oliver! Did something happen?”“The storage room was infiltrated, and a security guard was dead!” Juan exclaimed in terror. “I heard they took a valuable thing there. Come here quickly! The higher-ups are looking for you!”Oliver sighed. “Alright… I understand.”He ended the call. With confusion evident in his eyes, he looked at Ray.“What happened, Commander?” Ray asked in curiosity.“Someone went inside the storage room and killed the security guard there,” Oliver answered, passing on Juan’s words earlier. He added, “I assume it happened as soon as I and Samuel left the Capital Hall.”“What…” Ray trailed off, remembering the information Oliver had there yesterday. “Could it be about the drugs? It was the same thing with Zayne Greensmith’s documents.“I wonder why this place is restricted to janitors.
