Chapter 66

As I drove through the streets, the car buzzed with youthful chatter and the upbeat melody of "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears. Maria, Nicole, and Gisella, just out of school, filled the seats. Suddenly, the music was interrupted by Maria's ringing cell phone, prompting me to swiftly lower the volume. Maria, seated beside me, went pale, her hand hesitating over the device, unsure of what to do next.

"Who's calling?" I inquired, glancing her way.

"My father," she replied, her gaze meeting mine, a storm of apprehension and resolve swirling in her eyes.

The superhero quest involving Maria hadn't reached its conclusion. It seemed the universe had woven me into the fabric of her story, compelling me to aid her in her strife with her father.

"Come on, just take it," I encouraged, steering the car with one hand. "Put it on loudspeaker. I'll help if you need it."
