The dim corridor outside the hospital ward was eerily quiet, broken only by the faint hum of fluorescent lights. Ruby stood there, her heart pounding, though not from fear. No, it was anticipation—a cold, calculated anticipation. This time, she would make sure Mabel was gone for good. There would be no mistakes, no loose ends. No one would ever know Mabel had been murdered.

She gripped the small vial of poison in her pocket tightly as she took a deep breath. Steeling herself, Ruby pushed open the door to Mabel's room, determined to end the competition for Brian’s affection once and for all. But as she stepped into the room, her eyes widened in shock.

The bed was empty.

Mabel was gone.

“What’s going on?” Ruby whispered, her voice sharp with confusion. Her gaze darted around the room, but there was no sign of the girl she’d seen lying helplessly in that bed just yesterday. The IV stand stood abandoned, and the sterile white sheets were neatly folded, as though no one had ever been here

On a scorching sunny day, Brian Taylor trudged through the bustling streets, his heart heavy with worry and disappointment. The relentless heat bore down on him, a fitting backdrop to his current state of mind. He had spent the entire day searching for a part-time job to support himself and his girlfriend, Mabel Lawson. After countless applications and rejections, he found himself resorting to the only option available: becoming an Uber driver. Brian’s prospects were dim, shaped by a background that often left him feeling inadequate. Hailing from a small, rural town, he was frequently viewed as uneducated, a label that gnawed at him. Unlike many of his peers, Brian was not an orphan. He had a loving, albeit struggling, mother who worked tirelessly to provide for them, but her meager income was never sufficient. He had never met his father, only seeing him in faded photographs that offered little comfort. The only family he truly knew were his foster grandparents, who welcomed his mo

I regret it already!” Mabel insisted, her eyes wide with a false sincerity. “So, you’re ready to take me back?” Brian reached out, longing to touch her, but she dodged his hand like he was a disease. “Don’t touch me

After helping Claire unload the delivery from the car, he followed her into the hotel room, his heart heavy with the knowledge of his own insignificance. As Brian stepped into the room, he was immediately met with a sea of elite students, all of them draped in designer attire. And there, in the midst of them, was Mabel. “Guys, look who we have here,” Sharon sneered, her voice dripping with disdain. “The poor and stinky Brian from the countryside,” she continued, her laughter echoing through the room. Brian stood frozen, absorbing the insult, his silence a defense mechanism. He knew that speaking up would only invite more ridicule—these were people who could erase him without a trace. • 040. Aisha ambitions

The red droplets falling from Aaron's bloodied fist matched the intensity of his hatred. "Brian, you can take everything else, but I won't let you have her," he snarled at the empty room, his words echoing off the pristine walls of the family estate. But fate, as it often does, had already set its wheels in motion long before this moment of desperation.Earlier that afternoon, the air had been thick with tension in the same room where Aisha sat, her perfectly manicured nails drumming against the mahogany armrest as she voiced her frustrations. "Ever since the party, I haven't heard from Mabel again. Her line isn't going through." She cast a calculating glance between Aunt Shawn and Aaron, her eyes betraying the machinations behind them. "I hope she hasn't changed her mind. I really need her to cause division between her and Ruby."Aaron, who had been standing by the window, turned to face her. The sunlight streaming through the glass caught the sharp angles of his face as he delivered

  • 39. Ruby's plan

Brian sat at his desk, his eyes glued to the laptop screen as his fingers danced over the keyboard. Ruby stood behind him, her hands gently massaging his shoulders. A soft smile played on her lips, though her mind was already racing ahead."I’ve been thinking, Brian," Ruby began, her voice sweet and measured. "You know Claire has that competition coming up. How about enrolling her in a cooking school? She could really improve her skills there. Actually…" She hesitated before adding with a triumphant smile, "I’ve already done it. She’ll stay there until the session is over."Brian’s fingers paused for a brief moment, though his gaze remained fixed on the screen. "Thanks, Ruby," he replied calmly, "but you should have informed her before making that decision. Remember, Claire is older than you. You need her permission before taking such a step."Ruby frowned, her smile faltering. "But she needs it," she pressed, her tone firm.Brian finally turned to look at her, his expression unreadab

  • 38. Ruby's jealousy

Krayon stood frozen, staring at the girl Brian had just introduced as Chloe. Her expression was sharp and unwelcoming. She looked at him like he was something unpleasant stuck to her shoe, her annoyance plain as day. It wasn’t just her glare that unsettled him—it was the way his stomach churned under her scrutiny. Only Chloe’s face had this strange way of making him feel nauseous, like a bad memory resurfacing. His gaze flickered to hers, and in that moment, the memory hit him like a slap. School. He remembered how she had beaten him up, leaving him humiliated and bruised. It all made sense now. Mabel—sweet, calm Mabel—could never have hurt him like that. No, it wasn’t her. It had been Chloe all along."If you're Mabel’s sister, then where is Mabel?" Krayon’s voice broke the tense silence as his eyes darted between Chloe and Brian. He was searching for some kind of explanation, some clue, but neither of them said a word. Their silence felt deliberate, a wall he couldn’t break through.
