Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (25) - Cover your own mistakes
Today was a good, ordinary day. It's been a few years since the last time I experienced an unordinary summon. This is, by all means, good news. This level of event shouldn't be happening every day, or else, how would any species even survive? The universe is just not such a fickle and dangerous place. Knowing the probabilities of these occurrences, it would instead be weirder to get used to it. Be it for humans or devils, an abundance of resources is to be celebrated. Also, if something of this scale happened again and I was assigned to it again, I would definitely curse the management. It is an opportunity to get merits, but the cost far outweighs the gains.

Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (26) - Reminiscence
-Hi. -Hey. Not many words, but it already shows a difference in mood. Both are casual greetings, but the second is more cheerful in nature. -How are you doing? -Not much. Oh, yes actually, they cleaned my jar yesterday. I heard all the noise. It must look cleaner than last time. -It does. -And you wouldn't believe how talkative the cleaners are, they just can't stop gossiping. -It must be annoying, I see. -At least this generation is not into celebrities as much. I would truly die if they talked about the royal family or Hollywood even once more. Read more
Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (27) - Track
Yet another good, ordinary summon.-So you want riches? Please sign here.-So easy? Nice.So easy indeed.Sometimes I wish all humans were as good as the man I met the other day.Or at least as interesting as Tanya. But I guess you don't find people as straightforward as Tanya every day. Or it would just be ordinary, and as such, not interesting. However, if they were intelligent, I would actually feel excited when trying to trick them. There was a time when I actually felt pressured when having humans sign. At this point, it feels like I'm a delivery man, just having them sign without thinking all the time.Read more
Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (28) - Searching
We've been working on this for over a month now, but it is definitely faster than any other method I could think about. Eventually, my attaché has been able to hold his breath longer, so with the total rest time being lower, the daily progress has been higher. Also, while there were some changes in the path taken by the signal, most could be reused. Speaking of changes in the path, who thought it was a good idea for the signal to randomly change path? I understand it's good to avoid people tracking it, but there's no way anyone could track it without cooperation from a member of the Church over many weeks. I don't think I am the best devil at this task, far from it. Or even that Devils are the best species for such a tas

Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (29) - Meeting
Is it so friendly? I wonder, seeing the hands waving in the distance. I guess in any case, I have no choice but to go. I take my attaché's hand, and get ready to teleport there. I am here. It is nothing usual. I didn't have the time to teleport, but I am here. There is something highly wrong about this. I did not feel any change in space, nor did I feel any sign of what happened. Yet the air around me has suddenly changed, and the place where we stand is different. It feel

Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (30) - Double
This is a double chapter. You can consider it a celebration for chapter 75, or just as a bonus.Part 1: Time Flies After I gave their message to their god, the Church never contacted me again, and I didn't try to either.I focused on getting merit and increasing my rank.In that endeavor, the time I spent previously researching the content of my proposal was well worth it. I probably wouldn't have been able to get to where I am in such a short time otherwise.Eventually, humanity became too developed to keep her ashes safe. They were likely to discover there were ashes inside the pot at some point, and use part of them to date the pot.Read more
Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (31) - Success
This chapter is over twice as long as a regular chapter, but it isn't a double chapter. Just a really long one.   What is success? More specifically, what is being successful? Some would reduce the measure of success to the measure of its consequences. While it is true that consequences make for an easy metric to measure success, it is but the smoke of the fire. There is no smoke without fire, but there is fire without smoke. It is also to note that the particular smoke that is the consequence of success tends to often be unnoticeable, and rarely traces back to its origin. So, can one use the consequences of success as a measure of success? No. Unless,

Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (32) - Name
Everything went well lately. While I was celebrating my victory, I also had an uneasy feeling. Nothing ever goes as you wish, so if everything goes well, it means you didn't notice what's wrong. At this point, I just wish I had a problem so I could be done with that. And as expected, something was indeed wrong. I received an unusual summon: I was summoned by name. There is a law that forbids Devils from spreading their names. I know this law well, for I studied it intensely when preparing my proposal. The law forbids any type of publicity for

Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (34) - Finale
A/N: Double length! Wrote it in one piece, so consider it a bonus for the finale!   I am finally on the doorstep of success. As much as I won long ago, its results are today. You could say it is the last, decisive battle. In the time it took me to free her, I saw humanity rise and face various crises. Humanity had the time to change entirely as a civilization. Compared to its evolution, the Devil society might seem to stagnate. But it was not entirely true. Because every single change I pushed forward, little by little, over the y

Volume 9 - A devil's sadness (35) - After Story 1
Daniel was studious. He was studious enough that when he summoned a Devil, he managed to obtain riches from it with the insurance of not losing his soul early. He was so studious that he took care of his money, and did not squander it away. Of course, that did not mean he did not use it. He was studious enough to understand that many died without using their fortune because of their fear of losing it. So he simply calculated. Instead of growing his wealth with investments, he used part of the returns of these investments in his daily life. One shouldn't underestimate these returns, for they are plentiful. Read more
