Chapter 86.3
Ronan sucked in a sharp breath as Veronica tightened the arms of her jacket around his leg. He'd only felt a fiery nip at first, the muscle in his leg pinching while he followed Veronica from the building. But now that they had rested beside a dumpster, he could feel the bite starting to swarm. He needed a distraction from the pain while they decided their next move. His eyes fell on Cinder, the small bird limp in Veronica's lap. "Is Cinder...""She's alive," Veronica muttered, caressing her damp feathers with her thumb. She was trying to keep her head turned, most of her quivering lip kept to the shadows."I'm sorry."Ronan didn't pry to see her face, knowing what he'd find but confused all the same. There wasn't a thing he could think of for her to apologise for, meanwhile his list could run a round trip back to Cobalt."I should apologise."Veronica lifted her gaze, riddled with the same confusion Ronan probably had for her."For what?"Before Ronan's face could drop, it stiffened

Chapter 87
Ronan felt relaxed. From what he could now feel the return ritual had stopped gnawing at his wounded leg, his eyes closed to a peaceful veil of black while he laid on his back. He waited for the voices of his friends or even the frightening boom of his uncle to welcome them back, but was disappointed when none came. And so, he reluctantly opened his eyes. A cream coloured ceiling stared back—the wrong ceiling. It wasn't the one he had timidly stepped under, the one made of dreary grey stones stained with water and the scorched scars of failed experiments before his uncle could get a paravelt to work. He twisted his neck, feeling the soft and feather stuffed fabric hugging his body. He was in a bed, in the middle of a fair sized bedroom that was lavish enough to fit the palace of Fairez Stella, but somehow homier than his bedroom back on Earth. It had a desk propped in front of one of the windows, right next to a line of wooden shelves built into the walls and weighed by a line of fa

Chapter 87.2
The council member cleared their throat, a sound so loud Ronan wondered if the man cared for manners in the presence of an emperor. Elisious seemed to hold similar thoughts, coaxing Samanthra to his side and facing down the shorter man with a welcoming smile that was still frozen on the inside. "I forget, the council thinks itself above the simple virtue of patience. You may lift your head and speak, starting with whatever name we should be calling you." The man lifted his chin, still avoiding the emperor's gaze by mostly watching Ronan through the corner of his eye. "Turgen Rudas, your majesty. I hope I won't hold much of your time, but I have some confirmation questions for you." Elisious nodded. "Yes, of course. How respectful of you not to listen in." "To start, the council apologises on Cobalt's behalf for dragging this mess to your front door." Elisious hummed, the venom in his voice candied by professionalism. "I happen to call this mess my nephew, you'll do well by addres

Chapter 88
Ronan only saw his friends when they were walked to a stable full of fierce bronze griffins, unable to even greet them by Mr. Rudas' decree. The silence stretched the journey to twice its length, the dragging time still insufficient for Ronan to make a plan.As Phantom had predicted, his brash move of running to Fairez Stella was now biting him in the butt, and with the Council's nosy dog he didn't even have a plan to get the ingredients from Zalius. When they landed in Cobalt's field, Ronan was holding back his urge to vomit. The nauseating rock upon the beast's back was only trumped by his buzzing leg, and he accepted Ariabella's assistance off the beast when Mr. Rudas offered none. He was lead to the front entrance before any of his friends and even Puff, worry the only emotion plain upon their faces as he looked over his shoulder. As they climbed the tiny length of stone steps, Ronan swore he felt some of Mr. Rudas' ragged sigh on the back of his neck."Must we take the front entr

Chapter 88.2
Ronan wiggled his toes, wincing while the pain in his leg seemed to be strung to his pinky toe. Polearis was all the way down, and the room empty to him and Puff—and Phantom. But while night was upon him, it was the only one he'd have to free Phantom. And he'd given Zalius all the ingredients he collected. Zalius who was hours away in the middle of a hostile forest."You won't make it five minutes," Phantom said, not on board with visiting Zalius, yet fresh out of a better idea."I can ride Puff," Ronan retorted, his face screwing up in pain as he moved his leg."Right, so I guess you'll saddle up at the door and run through the halls while Tella's whisps have half a dozen council lackeys jump you?"Ronan sighed, feeling his pocket, relief washing through him as he felt the ceptrum still snug in it. He pulled it out, focusing on the tiny rock until a voice popped into his head.Ronan frowned, glancing at the Fairez Stella sender on his wrist. "What are you doing?" Phantom said, on th

Chapter 89
"So what's the new way you're getting caught?" Phantom said, his voice pressed with a cringe as he saw Ronan try and climb up onto a chair just below the hatch with his injured leg. "I can't watch this."Ronan balanced on one leg, watching the small hook binding the hatch shimmer with an enchantment when his fingers brushed it."Truvius said these were emergency exits, so maybe we can get to the secret room without Tia seeing us..." he replied, muttering insanctious and ordering the hatch to open. The fine dust of a shattered spell fell on his face and the hatch swung down, settling a flurry of dust at his feet."Those aren't emergency exits. Zalius' father didn't like the servants walking the same halls as the nobles, so those exist. Probably helped whoever killed him get away too, but they really don't go where you're thinking.""They go out of this room without getting caught by Tella, that's where I'm thinking," Ronan said, his grin twisted with gritted teeth to hide the pain in h

Chapter 89.2
Ronan leaned closer, scared even his breath would cover a sound of movement he could pin Phantom to. When none came, he ignored his clenched gut and moved his hand towards the rip, his fingers barely brushing the black shadows when a hand seized his wrist. His heart stopped for only a moment, the white glove jerking back to tug him inside but thankfully failing as he quickly grounded his feet and tugged back. The hand undoubtedly belonged to Phantom, disjointed by the swirling shadows and hiding whether Phantom was trying to pull him inside, or something else didn't want him to leave. But Ronan felt a set of hands grab his shoulders, Zalius joining the tug of war to tip the scales and send the tall red spectre stumbling out of the black and right into Ronan. With a small groan Ronan picked himself up, catching a glimpse of Zalius' foot deliberately smudging one of the chalked lines to end the spell and seal the rift.Ronan could still feel Phantom's pinching grip on his wrist, the two

Chapter 90
Ronan felt Phantom relax in surprise, his own emotions mirroring the response as Mr. Rudas grinned at them both."You'll not gamble his majesty's heir for the sake of calling a bluff," Ariabella cut in, stepping from the illusionary wall to clear a path for Phantom. "You are free to pass.""Try to leave and I shoot again." Mr. Rudas eyed Samanthra, trying to hide his rage that so many people were trying to heal the downed representative all at once. "Call a damned nurse, I need as many bodies as I can get to bring this demon down."Ronan tried to swallow the sick lump that came with watching Mr. Rudas, going for a better distraction when he heard Puff warble at Phantom."Don't, you'll get in trouble... Or seriously wounded," Phantom muttered.Ronan tried to turn his head a little to see what his guardian was doing, but the only clues he could gather were on Mr. Rudas' dipping expression. Then he heard the ear piercing roar, Puff blasting by him full sized and scaled up with Zalius rid

Chapter 91
"Ronan, you stand before this council in discussion of the charges laid against you."Ronan pushed back into the cushioned chair. He wasn't standing before anything. The chair's black cushions and groaning wooden joints had been his second home ever since the Council summoned him to trial in Latos' capital, Listillvice. His first home was now one of the guest bedrooms of Cilvren's castle, where he could at least spend the rest of his summer with one of his friends, Veronica. The speaker and most of the lavender laced Council members hadn't changed. The script hadn't changed. The only difference today was that they'd finally be deciding on his charges. The last hurrah for Mr. Rudas against the merciless blades of his uncle's words, who took defending him like a pleasureful pastime game. Guests could finally sit in and watch the show, stuck to the highest level of seating to stare down the stadium of white stone carved full of Council insignia. And now, looking around the filled seats o

Chapter 91. 2
"It appears the Novan is not a fan of words. The six person party sent to peacefully speak with the creature were found three days ago at the meeting point they had established, butchered."The word echoed in the room, made even louder by the silence that ensued. His uncle didn't even have a remark."Knowledge of the meeting point was something only the peaceful party, the Novan, and the Grand Chancellor himself had knowledge of. Their deaths have been dated to the exact day of the meeting, but of course an investigation has been launched to figure out what happened." His gaze wandered to catch Ronan's. "After all, who could have committed such a horrific act?""Warlord's call for comment."Ronan looked for the voice that had called from the second level of seats, staring in confusion at Cilvren as the hulking man stood to spotlight himself."Granted," the judge spoke."I hold theory on this matter," Cilvren announced, rubbing at his wiry beard as he stared down at Ronan in ponderment
