Eye for an eye
“You’re certain!” Lord Vik’t hissed in annoyance.“Yes, my Lord,” Ashlam said from his kneeling position.“This should have been expected, but this was too soon. To think the man already figured out how to make a flying ship.”“Ahem,” Ashlam coughed, drawing his Lord’s attention.“Speak.”“We believe he has had this technology for some time, my Lord. But we have only recently confirmed the rumors ourselves.”“What rumors,” Lord Vik’t demanded.“Some people from Houston said he had a flying fortress made of stone. But those were dismissed as some sort of illusion. There were also these barges but they were said to only glide a few meters above the surface and moved quite slow. They also didn’t carry any weapons that we were aware of. So they were deemed unimportant.”“Unimportant,” Lord Vik’t said coldly. “Do you know how difficult it is to make an object float? No, of course, you don’t. And why didn’t that idiot in Houston relay this information to me on my visit?”“I am not sure, my

Burning out the vermin
I stared with fascination and maybe a touch of horror at the destruction my weapons had wrought. My estimate had been thirty seconds to a minute to burn through the shield based on what I knew of the shields I had on the fortress and the power of the weapons. But the barrage from all sixteen mana lasers – set to continuous fire – had burned through whatever shitty defense they called a shield in less than three seconds.I had been so surprised that I didn’t get the beams turned off until most of the building facing me had been sliced through. I knew the beams had passed through the building and out the other side because I could see smoke rising from behind the taller building. Honestly, I had been more worried about overloading my weapons by using this setting more than anything else. They weren’t designed for continuous use. But the time frame had been so short that no damage occurred to the weapons. There were a few small explosions from the building and shortly after the main targ

Discovering new lands
It had been two weeks since I departed Saint June, in search of what, I wasn’t quite sure yet. Action and adventure I guess. Or maybe just the ability to see something new was what I needed. My path took me across the eastern parts of South America but I didn’t linger or stop long. There wasn’t much to speak about in the area, it had been devastated by something. War or some calamity had left the once dense jungle barren and blackened. I’m pretty sure the area I was in was the former country of Brazil but it was hard to tell. I saw the remnants of a few cities. The houses looked like they were gutted by a monumental blast but there wasn’t the telltale sign of fire or the lingering radiation of nuclear weapons. The damage was also quite old. I was able to determine this by the fact that new plants were already growing in the area of destruction. It also didn’t look like the destruction caused by those magical insects we ran across on our flight to assault the Black Dragon. Those things

The isle of mist
No other dangers jumped out to attack as I closed in on my destination. I was now close enough to see what it was.Massive chunks of stone and dirt floated above the ocean. At first, it was just off the ocean surface but as I got closer I could see it rose up higher, with huge chunks of land just floating in the air with no apparent means to keep them there. It wasn’t uniform either but more like rocky outcroppings and small islands leading to a massive island near the center. I call it an island but it was enormous. I had once seen the smaller Hawaiian islands from above and this one island matched that in size. But I could see more off in the distance. Some were far higher in the sky than even this island. One thing was certain though, the island was lush and inhabited.A veritable jungle of connected vines – turned into bridges – clung to smaller outcropping islands. Each one sported small clusters of homes and what appeared to be… docks. But they weren’t normal docks, seeing as th

Dishonored
I watched closely as the Jerboa made his way through the bar and over to my table. Other Jerboa near his path got up and moved away but it didn’t seem like the same respect I saw out in the street. This looked more like disgust or pity. When he finally stood on the opposite side of the table from me, he spoke. “May I sit?” he asked quietly through a raspy voice that sounded like he had smoked three packs a day for his entire life.I glanced around the bar, seeing it had filled up since I had first entered. That didn’t mean there weren’t other open seats, but I felt like this wasn’t a random guy down on his luck, just looking for a place to sit where someone didn’t hate him. No this felt like someone who wanted something. I had considered taking on crew after spotting this port town, but I wasn’t about to make a yes or no decision without learning more.I grumbled internally at being a nexus of events and replied. “I guess.”The Jerboa nodded once and hopped into the chair, sitting cro

Captain Paul
“So, Captain, what are your plans?” Khikall asked as he walked beside me through the city.I shrugged, “not sure. I originally came to this part of the world to simply explore. But as you know I was attacked. I’m not the kind of person to forgive and forget. First, I need to make some repairs to my ship, then decide what to do. Although, I would still like to explore the Isles of Fog,” I stated, letting him know in no uncertain terms what might happen if he turns on me.He grunted, “that may be difficult and not just because of the pirates.”“Oh?”“If you aren’t planning on running trade, most ports will deny you entry at the least, the rest will simply fire on you as a precaution if you have an armed ship. Even pirate hunters may turn their guns on you if they can’t identify your vessel. Safer to apologize to the survivors than let a pirate escape.”“Well, that’s discouraging to hear. I certainly don’t want to run supplies between ports. How can we avoid this?” I asked, not disclosin

Learning the ropes
I let Khikall take control of the ship and slowly ease us into the pea soup fog that was quickly rolling into the harbor. It was hard trusting someone I had just met but he seemed like a straight sort of guy. Besides, I couldn’t do this alone, despite my capabilities.“This is normal?” I asked.“The mist? Yes, this is actually quite thin yet. The mists roll in and stick around for a few days before they dissipate again. Something to do with the mana fluctuations that keep the islands afloat or so I heard,” Khikall replied, reaching into his vest and producing what looked like the bottom of a glass bottle and holding it up to his eye.“What’s that do?”“Here, see for yourself,” he said, tossing me the item.I snatched it out of the air and looked it over. It was obviously enchanted as could be seen by the visible magic circle around the edges. I held the item up and looked through it like I had seen Khikall just do. What I saw was the blank metal walls inside the ship. I frowned in con

Little fish
“That could have gone better,” Khikall said as I reentered the command room.“Yeah, but I got the captain so it all worked out. Any idea why only three pirates tried to board the Retribution, I can’t imagine we incapacitated the rest of crew,” I said, running my hand through my sweaty hair after I put my helmet away.“The rest were probably slaves,” Khikall replied offhandedly.I froze, the bile rising in my throat as I realized I just damned a ship full of slaves to a watery grave. I had to grip the edge of my chair to remain standing. Khikall didn’t seem to notice my distress as his seat was farther ahead in the room.I didn’t know these slaves but just the thought of people being in a similar position as I had been not more than a year ago was sickening.“Khikall, how many of these pirates use slave crews?”I don’t know if it was the tone of my voice or something else, but Khikall turned to look at me, I could feel an underlying tenseness to his actions.“I take it you do not appro

Port Of broken soul
We slowly coasted into the small port that Khikall had told me about. He wasn’t lying when he said small. There was one dock with three slips for ships and that was it. Even the island wasn’t much more than a small rocky mass, floating adrift in the sky. There were a dozen buildings, all crammed together with tight walkways between them to maximize the usable space.“Gods, what is this shit hole?” I asked.“The port is called Hylatty. It's where people go when they have nowhere else.”“I can guess why. You sure there is going to be a portmaster here to even declare the bounties with?”“Every port is required to have one in the Avuilian Protectorate,” Khikall answered.I grunted, “what about selling the other items?”“Depends, they may buy those cannons to help ward off pirate attacks, or they may not. Sometimes it is safer to just give the pirates what they want so they leave you alive.”“Fine, let's get this over with and find someplace less depressing,” I replied. There were no ship

Quest
I waited on the deck, enjoying the sun as I watched him approach. It turned out Khikall was overly optimistic in his estimation on how long it would take to return. And when he finally did return, I noticed he was returning alone.Khikall stumbled his way down the rickety pier. The Jerboa was plastered by the looks of him but he still managed to jump from the dock to the deck, although, his landing wasn’t graceful and I saw him choke back some vomit before he stood on unsteady legs.“Want me to fix that for you?”He shook his head very slowly, “A cost of doing business,” he said with a burp. “Barcos agreed to join the crew on one condition.”“Oh, and what’s that?” I asked, curious as to what a man like Barcos would want for his cooperation.“You need to bring in his replacement.”“… That’s all? Why can’t he just contact his government and have them send one over?” I asked in confusion.“He did. But the man refused to come to the island and is hiding out at another, more prosperous por
