Chapter hundred forty one
Christian Robinson was faced with two options right there on the barstool. Walk away and hope the nosey man wouldn't mention it to anyone else that he was searching for Orton Berlin or talk to him and see if he could get help.He was losing valuable time and that was the one thing he did not have, not when Jupiter had met him herself to threaten him - and yes, he knew it was a threat alright. Christian finally caved in and decided that he needed help, there was no way he could leave that small town and still not find Berlin, not when Otec was at a dead end and time was running out. With a sigh, he turned to the man and asked, "What do you know about Berlin?" The man had a wry smile on his face, clearly satisfied with himself for successfully convincing him. He looked at him and then around the bar and said, "I don't think this is a good place to talk, come on, let me take you somewhere private. Christian sized him up, he was a foot inches shorter, and he looked sturdy but not too s

Chapter hundred forty two
The drive back home after that day was long and tiring, he couldn't wait to call his investigators and find out what they'd gathered so far. Apart from his meeting with Ken, there was no progress on his end. But at least, he could now understand Karen's paranoia and defensive attitude. The old woman wanted to hold onto her cash source and Ken wanted that too. He could almost sense some underlying backstory to all that Ken had said, but it was useless to pry, the man had been the one to call him and if he wanted to tell him half the story then there was nothing he could do. As Christian drove by Shirley's place later that evening - he'd not just driven by actually, he'd taken a route that was much longer just to get to her neighborhood. But after several taps on the door, he discovered she was either not home or didn't want to see him, so he quietly left. ___________________________________________________________________The next day, Christian left home at first light - as had bec

Chapter hundred forty three
The sun was low in the sky and the air was thick with dew, Christian could barely see through the haze when he arrived at Karen's house that evening. He could see that both cars had been taken off the front yard and he had a feeling it had to do with his observation the other day - the woman was possibly trying to avoid any more questions about her income and fancy sports cars. As Christian climbed on the porch, he could hear voices from within and he had to stop himself from knocking immediately but instead leaned closer. Christian could make out a male voice which was a louder baritone and he could also recognize Karen's shrill voice from within. But there wasn't much he could hear from inside and suddenly, he heard harsh footsteps moving to the door, no doubt someone had seen him from the multiple through the window, he stood straight and tried to look casual as the door flung open and a man stepped right through, almost barreling into him as he passed. "This will be the last w

Chapter hundred forty four
The rest of the night was not peaceful for Christian Robinson. He struggled to sleep and when he finally did, he was plagued with nasty nightmares about what was wrong with Shirley, the girl with the ocean eyes he'd just met. Morning couldn't come fast enough and when it was daylight, Christian got out of bed quickly. He missed two calls from Potter and one from Evans but he wasn't eager to call back. He didn't want to talk to them if all they had to do was remind him of the sickening pressure he was under. He had already gotten information that Jupiter was setting up meetings and trying to get the deal too. Otec was genuinely not willing to partner with them but Chris knew it was only a matter of time before she got through to someone and was able to have that deal. If that happened, it would mean he was off the family and this time there would be no reinstatement. Christian could still recall the feeling of hopelessness and worthlessness he'd felt in the first few months of his e

Chapter hundred forty five
The entire town seemed to think that Ben was so dangerous they couldn't risk getting on his bad side. They all either pretended not to know him at all while few said they couldn't place where he lived. Karen was out of the question; she had made good on her promise and reported him to the police. Although he hadn't been called or any attempt made at arresting him, there was now a police van that patrolled the old woman's front yard. Christian Robinson knew that he couldn't stand another night of torture, he had to find Ben as soon as possible, there was no way he could sleep easy knowing that Shirley was in trouble and she'd not just reached out to him but told him who had taken her - or so he believed. Deep down, Christian knew what the B meant, but he couldn't just take the alphabet to the police and order that Ben be arrested, it meant nothing, could have been a mistaken text to him, or it could be the beginning of a full sentence she never got to finish, it could have been anyt

Chapter hundred forty six
Christian looked at the address that Ken had scribbled on the paper with a frown on his face. He turned to search for Ken and already the man had gone, gotten into a cab the moment he handed him that paper. Christian couldn't even blame the man for trying to be careful, he was out there less than fifteen minutes and already everyone was staring at him like he was some fugitive or worse. "Fucking small town, I hate this place!" Christian swore loudly under his breath as he drove away and then on his way, he made a turn and returned the same way he'd come. Ken said Ben was at a barber's shop in town. He didn't say which but Christian figured he'd start by checking the first one he'd passed just at the edge of town. A few minutes later, he arrived at the place and noticed that it had just been opened, the sign was still flipped as closed but someone was within, pulling out chairs and parting the curtains. Christian stepped in and the doorbell above him rang, immediately, he saw the po

The men closed in on him and Chris could see the wicked gleam in their eyes. They knew he was a stranger and they were suspicious of him, thinking he'd come to ruin their establishment. "We see cops come here all too often and sometimes they send in snitches like you, but guess what?" The skinny guy asked as he drew closer to him, "If any rat gets in here, we make sure they don't crawl out alive," he sneered and then threw a punch at Chris. Chris dodged and quickly bent down, missing another punch before circling his legs right under him and the man lost balance and fell flat on the floor. "How dare you come in here and lay hands on our__" one of the rough-looking guys snarled and lifted his bat against Chris but at that moment, a man called out to them from behind, telling them to lower their weapons. "I think I know this bastard, he's here for me," Ben said as he came out from behind the shop which looked more or less like a junkyard. "Isn't that right, city boy? I know you came

Chris looked unaffected as Ben began to brag about all the fancy ways he would deal with him before his men had their chance. "You just don't know who you are dealing with, do you? I told you earlier, that not even the best of cops can find me, we all aren't afraid of cops, are we?" Ben asked and turned to his men who all laughed and snorted. "We fucking pay the cops!" One of them bellowed and the rest laughed out loud, "We feed them with crack to keep them loyal!" Another snarled and the rest joined in. Ben smiled at all that his thugs said, "That's a way of saying that we will dig your grave right behind this house because no one will be coming for your dead body, no one," he sneered and then leaned in to whisper, "You won't be the first men buried here." Chris still didn't flinch at the statement but he couldn't help scanning the entire land with his eyes. It was uneven, some of the ground bare and some with grasses. They might have dug a few shallow graves like he said. "Go a

Chapter hundred forty nine
Christian watched as the first SUV door flung open on all sides and three men stepped out from the backseat, all dressed in black. He was surprised, he hadn't called anyone and he knew what his investigators looked like, that wasn't them. "I asked, who the fuck are you!" Ben growled again but the men that had just arrived didn't reply to that, instead, they all came to the porch and attempted to take Chris but some of the thugs got in their way and even Chris wasn't so eager to follow. He couldn't tell who it was and Shirley was involved, he had to ensure her safety first. "Oh my God, what is going on?" Shirley mumbled behind him, she was still shaking like a leaf but Christian assured her that everything would be fine. "Take one more step and you won't get out of here alive!" Ben snapped. All these thugs were uncertain, they looked ready to flee but since their boss wasn't moving an inch, they stood their ground, although shakily. "Get out of here, young man, do it while you stil

Chapter hundred fifty
Shirley sat quietly as he got her to a restaurant first and ordered her a whole box of pizza, some salad, and a plate of beef stew. "I can't have all of this, you know I won't finish it," she said, blushing as she stuffed her face with the pizza. Chris knew she had quite an appetite and she'd been with Ben for some days, meaning she hadn't eaten well at all, she must have been starving. “Don't worry, you eat what you can and leave the leftovers." He said and she nodded. He looked over and she didn't look that traumatized. After reporting him at the station - her idea, he got her some fresh clothes and they both arrived at the fanciest restaurant in the small town and Christian treated her to a nice meal. "Thank you so much, Christian, I'm in your debt," she said, her beautiful eyes lowered. Christian shook his head, "I don't think so, I think I'm paying a debt I've owed for so long." He replied. Shirley froze and looked up at him with wide eyes, "You remember?" She asked and he n
