Xavier’s gaze faltered. He sighed and looked away, staring into the void before him. “Kendrick was shot.” He stated. “I barely escaped.” He added.

She shut her eyes tight, hoping she hadn't heard right.

“ A bullet grazed my arm—it was close but not fatal.” He continued. “Everything seemed so calm, so peaceful, at first. He even talked about meeting you at the airport. He waited expecting you but…” His voice trailed off, the weight of his words settling between them.

Bridget’s breath hitched. “And?” she whispered, almost inaudibly.

“I tried to save him, Bridget,” Xavier said, turning to face her fully. His eyes brimmed with guilt. “The first shot caught him off guard. It was fatal. By the time we got him to our private hospital, it was too late. He… he was gone.”
