"Abraham Coatas' daughter?" Hilda asked and Gilbert nodded, "Yes, her name is Ella." He replied, happy that his mother was impressed with him.

"That's great! I've been trying to get closer to her father all this while, I never knew he had a daughter, why didn't I think of that?" She mumbled and then turned to Gilbert sharply, "You must do everything in your power to win her trust and get her on your side." She ordered.

Gilbert nodded, "She's Jeremy's fiance though, he tried to claim her in the charity event the other night, I think they're getting married soon." He said and Hilda shook her head violently.

"That's where you come in, Gilbert, you have that charisma and charm that the ladies cannot resist, I want you to woo her, lure her, do whatever you must, but make sure that wedding doesn't hold!" She said sharply and Gilbert smirked, "You can count on me, mother." He replied

Hilda smiled and cupped his face lovingly, "I trust you, my boy, make me proud," she said and with that,

Jeremy Harrison smiled as he got out of the car, his eyes set on a high building that looked to be a factory. He could not believe he'd been looking for one man for so many days. "Are you sure I'm at the right place?" He asked Hanson who was on the phone with him. "Yes, it's the noodles factory down south, right?" He asked and Jeremy confirmed, "I know what you're thinking." "Yeah, I was expecting a Kingston to be better off, if he's working in some factory then he should either own it or something close, but no, he's just a shift worker," Jeremy said as he pulled on his hat and moved down the steep path to the factory. He'd parked his Bentley a good distance away, hoping not to draw so many eyes to himself but even as he went down the path, he could see a few workers stop by and stare at him, maybe his suit? Jeremy had just finished up from the office when he arrived at the factory, he wished he had the time to change into something more plain - maybe a T-shirt and a pair of jea

Sinclair walked into the Mercury Healer later that same day, he was holding a small suitcase and a lady was right behind him. As he got into the elevator, he pulled out his phone again and rang Jeremy and it went to voicemail. "Let's just hope he's in," he mumbled as he heard the elevator ding and strolled to his office. One tap on the door and he got in. "Hey, Sinclair," Jeremy said as he saw him walk in and on seeing the woman, he gave him a puzzled expression. "Relax, I did try to call to inform you I was coming, right?" He said and Jeremy sighed as he reached for his phone and saw the missed calls from Sinclair. "Yeah, I have been really busy, didn't want to get distracted." He replied and ran a hand through his hair. "Please, have a seat," he said to both of them and gestured at the couch adjacent to him. "What can I get you?" He asked. "A beer would be nice," Sinclair replied with a wink and the lady smiled, asking for water or coffee. "There's no beer in my office, Sincl

The room was dark, just a faint blue light shed its slightly eerie glow around. It was one of those nights when Sinclair needed a cold beer and he had made a bad pick of bars. The bar was at the corner of town, it was supposed to be a quiet place where they could talk without eavesdroppers because, well, nobody would care what they were talking about when girls were gyrating on the dance floor and men were ready to get a feel. "You overdid it today," Jeremy said with a bored expression as he looked at the noisy crowd around him. “That's the whole point, it's supposed to be away from all the wealth and elite bullshit, someplace we can talk without looking over our shoulders," Sinclair replied and Jeremy only stared at him, long enough for him to crack a smile and admit that he didn't think the bar would be that bad. "Yeah, I didn't think the place would be this crowded, I admit." Jeremy sighed and asked him if the lady was running late. He'd finally agreed to bring a third party i

The city was on the brink of chaos. Everyone was talking about the Kingston heir and Jeremy could not have been more upset with how quickly things had gone south in just a matter of days. "I knew it! I knew this was a bad idea, no one was supposed to know of the Kingston heir, no one but us," Jeremy snapped. "You'll have to calm the fuck down, Jeremy, you're getting ahead of yourself here," Sinclair warned. Both men were at the Mercury Healer that morning and watching the afternoon news. It was all over the public space, some people were even making speculations about the lord's whereabouts."I've spoken with the news agency, they'll make sure this is taken care of as soon as possible, all you have to do is calm down and put your head back in the game," the lawyer advised him. Jeremy hissed but remained on his heat. He had an idea how bad it was getting, the other partners were no doubt in on it by now and it was just a matter of time before whoever the heir was got wind of it and

"Are you sure of what you're telling me?" Jeremy asked Hanson over the phone. His attention was taken off the work on his table, he couldn't believe his ears. “Yes, sir, I have a few pictures too," he said and then Jeremy heard his phone beep, clearly he'd dropped a picture. "Thank you, Hanson, you're misy helpful," Jeremy said just as he ended the call. He was fuming with anger as he saw the picture. Hilda and Eugene were both talking to a young man in a restaurant, his head was bowed down slightly and he wore a deep red baseball cap, his eyes behind a pair of Ray-ban. He didn't consider it a choice of fashion, it was clear the man wanted to remain hidden. "Fuck!" Jeremy swore loudly and slammed his fist on the desk at about the same time that his secret, Bob entered. The young man jumped at the sound and almost retreated before Jeremy called him back and asked what the matter was. "Ummm...I can come back if now is not a good time," Bob said meekly, Jeremy glared at him and he qui

Sinclair and Jeremy walked into the restaurant, both men took their seats by the corner booth, and before long the waiter arrived to take their orders. But it was obvious that everyone from the next table was staring at them warily and they even the other workers didn't meet their gaze. "They can smell trouble, Jeremy, we have to take it slow," Sinclair advised, seeing the eagerness on Jeremy's face. Jeremy didn't want to waste any time, he wanted to get whatever information the restaurant had to give and then go on to meet the heir quickly, he couldn't afford to be a step behind again, ever. "We should just place our order and let them get comfortable," Sinclair suggested and Jeremy nodded. Both men ordered a medium rare plate of steak each and a bottle of wine to go with it. "Not so bad for a low-class restaurant," Sinclair noted as he opened the bottle of wine, Jeremy hummed and forked his stake. "Not so cheap either," he replied, looking at the menu. Sinclair nodded. He had a

The monitoring room looked like something from a science fiction movie. Wired and computers lined the walls and a man dressed much like Hanson would when he was in his 'tech cave' sat at the desk. "Excuse us," the woman said stiffly to the man and he quickly left, no doubt recognizing her no-questions tone. "What are we looking at?" Jeremy asked as she led them to the desk and sat down. "You asked for the videos from earlier, didn't you?" She asked and Sinclair nodded but said, "I'd prefer if you gave us the tapes, we'll take the time to view it, I'm sure we wouldn't want to waste much of your time, huh?" The woman glared at him and pointed at the monitor, "This is the best I can do for you, I can't let you take the tapes," she said stubbornly. "We'll burn them, all we need is a copy," Sinclair insisted but she shook her violently and got up from the desk, "I said, no, take it or leave it." Jeremy moved her aside and sat on the desk, scrolling through the mute images. It was a da

Hilda was standing over a mini bridge. Below was a clear lake, the surface rippling with the soft wind. Beside her stood Gilbert, his hands shoved in his pockets. She hadn't felt any better in a very long time. Her eyes sparkled with excitement and her hands held the banister of the small bridge a little too tightly. "He will be here any moment now, Mother," Gilbert said, mirroring his mother's excitement. Hilda nodded at her son, she was quite sure that their guest would come. "Oh I am pretty sure he will come, I have made him an offer even the angels can't resist," Hilda replied with a smile. "That's blasphemy, mother," Gilbert reminded her dutifully. Hilda merely smiled and shrugged, "Not when I'm telling the truth, Eugene and I have been able to convince him that the only way to remain in the city or indeed the land of the living is to partner with us," She said, her tone mischievous. Gilbert laughed, he trusted his mother when he came to negotiations, like she rightly said, sh

The room was as brooding and intimidating as the men who sat in it. It was so large that the walls could almost not be seen from the entrance. The cold air blasted from the air conditioning unit and there was no single furniture in the room except the mahogany table and six chairs that surrounded it. It was Jeremy's first time appearing before the council and he was dressed for the occasion. His white suit was immaculate and he'd had his show made the previous day. He was dressed like the heir he was as he stepped into the room. Sinclair smiled at him from across the room where he sat with the rest of the council but the smile was so slight that someone else couldn't have noticed it.Jeremy wasn't the only one standing before the council. Gilbert was likewise dressed in a white suit - making Jeremy regret picking the color - and his mother, Hilda was dressed in a tight purple dress that hugged her bodice like a second skin and extended to the floor like a wide wave, covering most of

Jeremy was shaking on the spot as he stared at the face of lord Kingston. He'd seen the man only a few times in real life as a child. When his father had taken him to meet with him once and a while. His memories were a little shaky but he knew that the lord was a handsome man who was aging finely. But even if he had never seen the lord before, he would still be able to recognize him. Right there on the makeshift hospital bed was lord Kingston with tubes sticking out of him in all the wrong places. His face was peacefully calm and his nod remained still on the bed. After the first shock wore off, Jeremy became alert again and quickly rushed to check his vitals. Even without grabbing his wrist, he could tell that the lord was still alive because the heart monitor on the wall was still ticking strongly. Jeremy however still checked his pulse and heartbeat manually, just in case the monitor was faulty. He looked around the room and could see different cabinets and drawers, they were al

The next day, Jeremy arrived at a tool shop very early in the morning, he was dressed in a form-fitting spandex and a pair of sunglasses, his feet tucked into a sturdy boot and his fingers gloved. "I'll have a chisel, a hammer, and a six-meter rope," he said to the girl at the counter who looked at him skeptically. "Are you working on something?" She asked and swallowed nervously. "You could say that," he replied and he could see the girl's eyes widen. "Don't worry, I'm not a psychopath," he said and she sighed but then he added, "I think," as he swiped his card, paid for everything he'd just bought, and backed it into his trunk. He was driving a nude-colored truck with tires larger than the regular, his backseat was filled with everything he needed to take down a door and even a wall if he needed to.Jeremy had spent the past night trying to make sense of what he had just seen the previous evening. The sound of the rain falling on the roof of his car sort of calmed him. Jeremy sighed as he cuddled a hot styrofoam cup of coffee on his lap and listened to the weather report on the radio. It was morning and the weather had surprised him as it did everyone else in the city. The day had started pretty sunny and then the clouds were out and soon, it was raining cats and dogs. "Climate change," Jeremy muttered as he listened to the reporter go on and on about the unpredictable state of the weather for the past few days. But if Jeremy was to be entirely honest, he'd seen a few clouds gathering the previous evening and it was a little chill too. Turning down the volume of the radio, he pulled on his raincoat from the backseat over himself and grabbed a towel from the glove compartment. He didn't have an umbrella on him because he wasn't exactly expecting the downpour. Opening the door, Jeremy raced to the porch of the restaurant and huddled with the crowd there. His eyes scanned throu

Hilda wasn't going to take chances with the new lady in town talking about Kingston like she knew him more than anyone else. Despite Gilbert and Eugene's warnings, she decided to take that risk and try to meet up with Cynthia once again. At first, Cynthia blatantly refused but after a second phone call and agreeing to go over to the spa again, she finally gave in. Hilda had to shift grounds and agree to meet in public since Cynthia was skeptical about coming to the estate. Dressed in a pair of black trousers and a chiffon top, Hilda moved into the spa and took a seat closest to the pool. It was a different crowd from the one she'd seen the last time at the spat. But they were very similar in many ways, rich, uppity, and lazy women who knew nothing about making a penny but a lot about how to spend it. Hilda could not help but feel a wave of jealousy wash over her as she waited in the spa. Cynthia using the place twice in a row was a sign that she visited there often. It was not a c

The three men looked at each other in silence. What Fred had said made no sense at all, there was no singular way of knowing who the true heir of the Kingston inheritance was or what the illegitimate child should look like. "This sounds like utter bullshit and I mean no offense, Fred," Jeremy said. Maybe it was his cravings for Chinese food or that he was just hungry, or maybe it was the irritation from the previous day's meeting with Cynthia and Tricia. He wasn't certain exactly why but he could tell he had no patience for crap. "No offense taken, Jeremy, but it is rather sad that you can't see what's right before your face," Fred said and shook his head, sipping his black coffee that had just arrived at the table. "So you came all the way here to find me and speak to me in parables?" Jeremy asked, he was about to call him jobless but then he did not want to offend Fred. "That's a thoughtful thing to do, thanks," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Fred laughed at his sarca

The smell of coffee and freshly baked loaves was thick in the air. Sinclair grabbed his mug and it warmed his fingertips as he blew on the surface of the brown liquid. "All that sugar isn't so good for a man your age," Jeremy reminded him as he drank his latte. “You need to live a little, Jeremy," Sinclair replied with a smug smile. Jeremy rolled his eyes and grabbed his cup of espresso. He did not order the pancake-like the lawyer did because he didn't have an appetite for anything other than Chinese soup. Sinclair was allergic to Chinese food and so he had turned down the offer to meet at the exquisite Chinese restaurant downtown. But even with his allergy, Sinclair sometimes indulged in the nice dish. He was an embodiment of a strong and resilient man. Earlier that day, Jeremy could still remember walking into him making a phone call with a client that he was representing for a murder case. It was a surprise how Sinclair bounced back right on his feet after such a tragic incide

Cynthia was placed under the heat of the midday sun, her eyes flicking at her watch now and then. She was a little anxious to meet the anonymous caller who had asked to see her. She was well aware that she'd stirred up a little talk in town with her sudden emergence, but she was basking in it. "How long are they going to keep us here for? We've been waiting for forever," Tricia, who was in the back of the car, snapped. Cynthia rolled her eyes at her daughter and replied, "We came here earlier than we were supposed to, in fact, technically it's just not time for the meetup yet," she stated. Tricia groaned and muttered something under her breath about rich people and their nasty habits. "You'll have to quit saying that, Tee," Cynthia warned her but she retorted defensively that it was the truth. "But I'm right, mum, rich people don't care about anyone but themselves, and right now, we're trying to get into their world, it's gonna be frustrating," she groaned again. Cynthia leveled

It felt good to see the Sinclair firm standing strong again after the unfortunate incident that ruined the entire place. As Jeremy drove in, he couldn't help but marvel at the sight. The building was towering, the signpost proud at the entrance and the grass had been replaced with synthetic grass carpets that looked way healthier than the original thing. Jeremy couldn't help but appreciate the beauty of plastic. At the parking lot, he could see Sinclair's car on the left side as he stepped out and shut his door, locking the car behind him. The lobby was redesigned a little but he could still see some semblance of the old firm in the renovations. In the elevator, he looked at his watch, it was a few minutes after noon and he was happy to have arrived on time. His mission at the bank proved abortive. Benedict had not been kidding when he said that he was risking his life and entire career just by getting copies of the records. Jeremy was barely allowed into the accountant's office and
