"You came later than expected, Mr. Isaac." The doctor said to him, immediately he entered his office and he recognized the voice with out any doubt.
He was the one, who gave him a call earlier, the same caller he had yelled angrily at and called names!
Isaac heaved out a heavy sigh, lowing his head and unable to meet the doctor's gaze. He felt really bad about his attitude earlier, he wished he was a little nicer to him on the phone.
But then, he could only wish since the deed is already done. He would just play along like all is well even if his mind seems really unsettled for his unpleasant act.
"Please, have a seat." Isaac was politely offered a seat from the doctor, who also coupled his words with a hand gesture. Reluctantly, he did as told, taking one of the seats before the doctor's desk.
He flashed the doctor an apologetic stare, not for his rude act earlier but for arriving at the hospital later than expected, just as the doctor had claimed. "I'm sorry for being late, I could not get myself enough..."
The doctor cut him off, interrupting his words. "There is no need for any excuse now, we have much urgent and important things to discuss." He calmly said these words to him. "It's better you hear me out first."
It must have skipped Isaac's mind for a moment, he had been summoned urgently to the hospital because of his mother's health.
"Yes, doctor —about my mother." Isaac stated simply. "I believed you were the one who had put a call through earlier, if I'm right?"
"Of course, I am the one." The doctor replied with a short nod. "I'm glad you are here even though you arrived late."
‘Is this supposed to be a compliment or an insult?’ He asked with in himself, not finding the doctor's choice of words pleasing enough.
Does that really matter at the moment? It does not but then again, Isaac's mind had shamelessly wander off again —taking irrelevant things to heart.
"I apologized already, doctor." To think of it as an sore words on the doctor's part but he still replied calmly. "What about my mother? Is she okay at the moment?"
"She will only be if she gets the treatment she deserves." The doctor told him rather honestly, he felt he doesn't need to sugarcoat words for him —especially not when his mother's health is at stake.
"Huh...?" He was taken aback by the doctor's reply as well as being speechless too.
"Like I told you earlier on the phone, she was said to have collapsed all of a sudden and was rushed down here." The doctor added to his previous sentence.
"Uh —may I know what caused her sudden unconsciousness?" Isaac requested, sounding too polite than he used too. "I believed you must have run every necessary tests on her, otherwise, you would not have know if she's in a critical state or not."
"Yeah, you are right, Mr. Isaac." The doctor confirmed Isaac's words with a few nods. "The result from the tests confirmed her to be having a kidney failure."
Isaac thought he heard wrong. His mother was diagnosed with kidney failure of all sickness?
Even if at all she wants to get ill, can't it just be a headache or some thing? Any of the slight illness of other kind, why kidney failure?
Earlier at the clubhouse when he was reminiscing over what had happened to him, he thought he had had enough face slapping for the day.
He thought the worst of all had happened to him but hearing his mother being diagnosed with a kind of sickness like the doctor had mention, he felt sick in stomach and his knees sudden go weak.
At that rate, he doubt if it can bear his weight at the moment.
‘'Can today get any more worst than this?’' He thought to himself, at the verge of tears. After the day's encounter, it seems way too easier for Isaac to shed tears.
The phrase of '‘Men don't cry’' isn't applicable to him any more, he now shed real tears like any kid would.
The doctor waited few moment for any reply from Isaac but got nothing as reply, he just stared at the doctor with a kind of emotion the doctor understand as that of pain and distress.
"I'm afraid we will have to carry on all necessary treatments on her as soon as possible, else..."
The else in the doctor's words made Isaac interrupted him abruptly. "She might not be able to survive for long, is it not?" He muttered in a dried yet pain filled voice.
Isaac knew he already helped the doctor to finish his words. He heard of things and similar situations as his mother's and was afraid his mother might fall victim like others too.
"Yes, Mr. Isaac." The doctor nodded in confirmation. "But it can be reversed as well."
Isaac heart was settled at the moment to hear the doctor said this. "What is it to be done?" He questioned in a rush. "I can't afford to lose her, not in this state."
"A huge amount of money would be needed for her to be operated on." The doctor stated, rather calmly. Immediately, Isaac supposed settled expression changed —the doctor understand him. "Well, we can run dialysis on her, that way, she can wait longer before the operation."
"I believe this is much more affordable." He muttered, trying to sound hopeful. He can't picture how much how breaking the amount would be and the effect on him.
"Uh —what do I say, Mr. Isaac." The doctor said, drawling. "I can't say it's much affordable except if ten thousand dollars is affordable for you."
"Huh —?"
Isaac thought his ear drums weren't working properly as they were supposed to, a ten thousand dollars? Where is he supposed to get such huge amount of money?
"As I told you earlier, it isn't the money for the proper treatment but just an installment for dialysis." The doctor added.
To think of him dwelling in a debt of a twenty thousand dollars before with no hope of paying it, where do he get another additional amount of ten thousand.
"Can you just carry on with the dialysis on her first and then I pay every thing up at the same time." Isaac pleaded desperately. "I promised this but you have to save her."
"I'm sorry but with out no installment of the mentioned amount, I'm afraid we can't treat her yet..."
Isaac has never been so distressed since his years of existence, that particular day was a day to remember for him. His mother needed to be treated urgently but he had no money on him to pay.No jobs, no money and not even a certificate to own in his name. The only way out to his worries was lending money to pay the doctor but from who or where do he lend such huge amount of money from?He is still yet to pay up his previous debt of a twenty thousand dollars, taking another loan would only make things much more uncomfortable and worst? That is, if any one is planning on lending him yet another loan. Who has such huge enough money to give out as loan, especially to guy with no source of income like him?The thought of not being able to meet up with the medical bills and his previous debt not yet paid, made his heart sink in his chest and he felt it dropped inside his stomach.Things was only able to grow from bad to worst for him in just a day with no way out of it —or maybe he is the
It was dawn already, Isaac stared at his unconscious mother with a mixed feeling of guilt and pity. The guilt for not being able to be the best son to her, he couldn't even raised her medical bills on his own —the thought of it made him felt like he isn't enough for her.And the look of pity he gave her was obvious, seeing his mother in an unconscious state, he need no one to tell him that she isn't doing well. She could not even stay conscious on her own except if she is properly treated and her only son couldn't render the only help he could by paying her bills? His mother has always been there for him and giving him the proper attention he deserved but then she was not able to make him get the proper education level he supposed too.Isaac had dropped out of college during the days of his second year in college. Since he could not finish and graduate, he own no certificate to attain him a good and sustainable job.As a grown up, he only get to work on rare days, could not even gener
The pain was excruciating and he felt his head was heavy. Isaac forced himself to snap his eyes open but they weren't bulging, they felt like they aren't his.He let out a deep throaty grunt as he finally snap them opened, his eye lid itching. His body felt limb and as good as dead as he tried to sit up."Be careful, Mr. Isaac, I'm sure you don't want to add more to your already existing pain." The voice came up all of a sudden, stopping him on his track.Isaac stared at the source of the voice. Oh, good, it's the doctor! He was wearing his familiar smile, staring directly at him.He groaned, slowly. "Okay, how did I get here?" It sounded more like a rhetorical question but he badly needed an answer to it and his voice doesn't sound like it used to. It came out like he was grunting."That doesn't matter now, Mr. Isaac, you should focus more on your pains." The doctor told him. "It seems like the injection we gave you has worn off. Where do you feel those pains aside from your body ach
Isaac's pain had reduced drastically and he can now stand and do other things on his own. The pain that left him was only physical pain and not the one that keep eating deep in his heart. That for sure, he knows isn't curable and with time, Isaac told himself he will learn to adapt to it soon —after all, his whole life lies in nothing else but pain with out any good memory to survive on.Isaac badly wanted to see his mother but was too ashamed too, not when he had failed her. To him, he would be so shameless to show his face before her, even though she's currently lying unconscious. He cajoled himself that she might not want him around, no parent is ever proud of a loser as child, most especially a male child. He told himself his mother might be feeling the same way too.Isaac sighed heavily as his stomach churned in hungry, growling loudly. He hasn't even had a proper meal since the past two days or more and his throat was dried too.He left the hospital, hoping to find an eatery nea
From afar, a car occupant watched as a body was carelessly laid down on the floor, only few feet aware from the busy road with surprised expression on the car occupant's face.Since it was at the accurate speed, it was easier for the car to slow down as the occupant's attention was caught by the body laying helplessly few feet away from the road side. There body was having several red marks and few bruises all over it, any one could tell how much physical abuse the person must have gone through. The car's occupant has no problem with the bruises and mark —but the fact that it was dumped carelessly angered her more than any thing. She had wanted to continue with her driving but could not, not knowing why the almost lifeless body caught her attention so much.Reluctantly, she parked her car by the road just few feet away from the body, hopping down from her car. As she near the body, her eyes sparkled in recognition."No way..." She muttered, staring at the direction where the two guy,
The huge firm had barely changed, it was just as he had left it few years before. Isaac hold the urge to look around and feed his eyes with the marvelling sight of the firm, he does not want to appear too pathetic."I'm here for the CEO..." Isaac uttered in the manly voice he managed to put up to the lady he guessed to be the receptionist, his weight barely rested on the counter. "She is supposed to resume work half an hour ago."The receptionist nodded positively in confirmation, staring oddly at him and in the next few seconds just before Isaac could utter yet another word."I guess you are Mr. Isaac then?" She asked but it sounded more like a plain sentence to a question."Yes, I am. I'm supposed to be in her office in the next five minutes." Issac replied her. "Let me lead you to her office then." The receptionist offered politely. "She's been expecting your arrival. This way, Mr. Isaac." "You don't have to worry yourself that much, Ms." Issac uttered as he politely turned down
"Well, in a nutshell, all I am saying is that you should get married to me..." She said, her voice sounding like it's a usual sentence to her. To Issac, he is really hearing things. He had convinced himself that his ears has been hearing things lately. From being rejected by Amy and her parents and now this? How could Evelyn of all people sprouts these out? Could this be that his ear had stop functioning. If that is the case, then the doctor did not need to operate on his mother alone, he also need to be operated too. "What is your reply to my handsome offer, Zik? Remember you have only two days left to find the money you are requested of." Evelyn Anderson said, wearing the same smirk Isaac hated to see on her face. It appears like the smile was mocking him. Issac stare at her like she was a stranger to him, his brows creased and line were visible on his forehead. What sort of reply is he going to give lady sitting before him? Of all men in the States, she did not seems to find
It better not be what he is thinking because he dreaded the thought of it, had he made a mistake by not accepting Evelyn's offer as soon as he can...?‘No, Zik. Stop thinking negatively...’ his subconscious hit him"What do you mean, doctor?" Issac asked. "Why have you asked me not to bring the money anymore?""Because an anonymous person had just cleared her bills." The doctor replied. "The operation will commence in the next one hour and you need to be at the hospital before that time so as you to sign a document as the only relative of her we know."Issac was confused, who on earth might have decided to ease him the stress by paying his mother's bills? He or she must have been generous to do so, Issac know he owes such a big thanks to whosoever it may be. But now, he really needs to go to the hospital first.*********"Its good you are here, Mr Issac." The doctor said immediately he saw Issac approaching his office. "You came just at the right time.""I have to, doctor..." Issac re
