THREE

"You came later than expected, Mr. Isaac." The doctor said to him, immediately he entered his office and he recognized the voice with out any doubt.

He was the one, who gave him a call earlier, the same caller he had yelled angrily at and called names!

Isaac heaved out a heavy sigh, lowing his head and unable to meet the doctor's gaze. He felt really bad about his attitude earlier, he wished he was a little nicer to him on the phone.

But then, he could only wish since the deed is already done. He would just play along like all is well even if his mind seems really unsettled for his unpleasant act.

"Please, have a seat." Isaac was politely offered a seat from the doctor, who also coupled his words with a hand gesture. Reluctantly, he did as told, taking one of the seats before the doctor's desk.

He flashed the doctor an apologetic stare, not for his rude act earlier but for arriving at the hospital later than expected, just as the doctor had claimed. "I'm sorry for being late, I could not get myself enough..."

The doctor cut him off, interrupting his words. "There is no need for any excuse now, we have much urgent and important things to discuss." He calmly said these words to him. "It's better you hear me out first."

It must have skipped Isaac's mind for a moment, he had been summoned urgently to the hospital because of his mother's health.

"Yes, doctor —about my mother." Isaac stated simply. "I believed you were the one who had put a call through earlier, if I'm right?"

"Of course, I am the one." The doctor replied with a short nod. "I'm glad you are here even though you arrived late."

‘Is this supposed to be a compliment or an insult?’ He asked with in himself, not finding the doctor's choice of words pleasing enough.

Does that really matter at the moment? It does not but then again, Isaac's mind had shamelessly wander off again —taking irrelevant things to heart.

"I apologized already, doctor." To think of it as an sore words on the doctor's part but he still replied calmly. "What about my mother? Is she okay at the moment?"

"She will only be if she gets the treatment she deserves." The doctor told him rather honestly, he felt he doesn't need to sugarcoat words for him —especially not when his mother's health is at stake.

"Huh...?" He was taken aback by the doctor's reply as well as being speechless too.

"Like I told you earlier on the phone, she was said to have collapsed all of a sudden and was rushed down here." The doctor added to his previous sentence.

"Uh —may I know what caused her sudden unconsciousness?" Isaac requested, sounding too polite than he used too. "I believed you must have run every necessary tests on her, otherwise, you would not have know if she's in a critical state or not."

"Yeah, you are right, Mr. Isaac." The doctor confirmed Isaac's words with a few nods. "The result from the tests confirmed her to be having a kidney failure."

Isaac thought he heard wrong. His mother was diagnosed with kidney failure of all sickness?

Even if at all she wants to get ill, can't it just be a headache or some thing? Any of the slight illness of other kind, why kidney failure?

Earlier at the clubhouse when he was reminiscing over what had happened to him, he thought he had had enough face slapping for the day.

He thought the worst of all had happened to him but hearing his mother being diagnosed with a kind of sickness like the doctor had mention, he felt sick in stomach and his knees sudden go weak.

At that rate, he doubt if it can bear his weight at the moment.

‘'Can today get any more worst than this?’' He thought to himself, at the verge of tears. After the day's encounter, it seems way too easier for Isaac to shed tears.

The phrase of '‘Men don't cry’' isn't applicable to him any more, he now shed real tears like any kid would.

The doctor waited few moment for any reply from Isaac but got nothing as reply, he just stared at the doctor with a kind of emotion the doctor understand as that of pain and distress.

"I'm afraid we will have to carry on all necessary treatments on her as soon as possible, else..."

The else in the doctor's words made Isaac interrupted him abruptly. "She might not be able to survive for long, is it not?" He muttered in a dried yet pain filled voice.

Isaac knew he already helped the doctor to finish his words. He heard of things and similar situations as his mother's and was afraid his mother might fall victim like others too.

"Yes, Mr. Isaac." The doctor nodded in confirmation. "But it can be reversed as well."

Isaac heart was settled at the moment to hear the doctor said this. "What is it to be done?" He questioned in a rush. "I can't afford to lose her, not in this state."

"A huge amount of money would be needed for her to be operated on." The doctor stated, rather calmly. Immediately, Isaac supposed settled expression changed —the doctor understand him. "Well, we can run dialysis on her, that way, she can wait longer before the operation."

"I believe this is much more affordable." He muttered, trying to sound hopeful. He can't picture how much how breaking the amount would be and the effect on him.

"Uh —what do I say, Mr. Isaac." The doctor said, drawling. "I can't say it's much affordable except if ten thousand dollars is affordable for you."

"Huh —?"

Isaac thought his ear drums weren't working properly as they were supposed to, a ten thousand dollars? Where is he supposed to get such huge amount of money?

"As I told you earlier, it isn't the money for the proper treatment but just an installment for dialysis." The doctor added.

To think of him dwelling in a debt of a twenty thousand dollars before with no hope of paying it, where do he get another additional amount of ten thousand.

"Can you just carry on with the dialysis on her first and then I pay every thing up at the same time." Isaac pleaded desperately. "I promised this but you have to save her."

"I'm sorry but with out no installment of the mentioned amount, I'm afraid we can't treat her yet..."
