Rodney was led into a black luxurious car and told to sit in the back with one of the men who kidnapped him. At the front was the driver and another man.
“Don’t try anything stupid, son.” His father warned before retreating to the house.
Since there was no point in saying anything, Rodney stayed silent and looked outside as the car sped through the streets of the high profile neighbourhood. He could not fathom how a wanted drug lord lived right under the noses of rich people but could not be captured. As he stared at the beautiful mansions, he wondered if a number of the owners were criminals as well. Were they all part of the mob, and that's they couldn’t report each other?
From what he knew, most criminals did not stay in one place for a long time. Maybe that was what his father did as well. His father had not even slept at the house which made Rodney wonder if he just popped up once in a while. His house was also the most secluded in the neighbourhood with the highest wall fence. You couldn’t see inside while passing by the road.
The car soon made it into the city center. Rodney was relieved to see many people, but he knew that he couldn’t escape alone. He could not leave his mother alone. The car pulled into a hospital and parked.
“You and I are going in,” the man next to him said. “If you try anything, the consequences will be dire.”
“You can’t kill me.”
“But I can shoot you,” the man said. “I don’t always kill a person when I shoot. Now open the door and get out. The doctor is waiting.”
Rodney pushed open the door and stepped out. The man did the same and started walking towards the hospital entrance gesturing for Rodney to follow him. Rodney followed. They didn’t bother sitting in the waiting room, instead went straight to the office of a man called Doctor Fuentes.
“Good morning doc,” the man said.
“Good morning, Andrew.” He said before turning to Rodney. “What’s your name, son?”
“Rodney Nelson.”
“Okay Rodney, we have a number of tests that we will need to conduct to determine donor and patient compatibility,” he said. “The tests will be done gradually. The first test we will conduct is blood typing which determines blood compatibility. Alongside that, we will do blood tests to find out if you have any transmittable disease for example HIV, Hepatitis and others.
After that, we will do a tissue typing test. This will determine the tissue or HLA type of patient, your father and the donor to see if they match.
The serum cross match test comes next. It is a blood test done multiple times for both donor and patient. Cells from your body will be mixed with his serum to make sure he doesn’t have antibodies to your kidney. If his body has antibodies to your kidney, it can reject and destroy it if transplanted. If cross match comes out positive, it will mean the patient has antibodies against donor.
This one will be done multiple times as we wait. It will also be done immediately before the transplant and after.”
“Wow, that’s a lot.” Rodney commented.
“Don’t worry, today we will only draw blood for the serology and blood typing tests. The results will determine if we can continue.”
Rodney could only hope that he would turn out to be a mismatch and Alberto would have to look around for other kids to save his miserable life.
“Come with me to the lab,” the doctor said. “You can wait for us here, Andrew.”
Rodney followed the man out, seeing a chance to voice out his concerns. When they were in the lab, the doctor spoke to the laboratory technician who started organising the necessary equipment.
When the doctor left, the man sprayed
“How do I express my concerns if I’m being forced to do this?” Rodney asked the man.
“You tell the doctor,” the man said. “Are you being forced to do this?”
Rodney pondered on whether to spill the beans or not. He decided not to. It was too early.
“No, it’s alright.”
“Let’s get this over with.”
The man drew two sets of blood and told Rodney to leave. As he stretched his hand to open the door, it opened by it’s own. The doctor appeared and walked in, following him was Andrew.
“Let’s go boy,” Andrew said. “We’ll get the results. I don’t like being out here with you because I know you might be tempted to do something stupid.
They went back to the car. The other men who had been standing outside went in promptly. Rodney and Andrew joined them and the car left the hospital.
Freedom was a very underrated thing in needed. The importance of freedom could not be over emphasized. You could have all the money in the world but not enjoy it if you had no freedom.
Rodney had been in the house he had only ever dreamt of living in but he was not happy at all. He had access to any amount of money he wanted, but couldn’t even ask because it was useless. The designer clothes he was wearing meant nothing if people could not see it.
Rodney used to dream of getting rich, he thought if it happened, he would wear great clothes, drive a cool sports car down the neighbourhood with all his friends and his enemies would go green with envy.
The house soon came into view, and the gate opened even before they got to it. As soon as the car pulled in, he saw his teary eyed mother running out of the house. She wrapped her frail hands around his thin body, tears and snot staining his jacket but he didn’t care. He wrapped his arms around her, instantly feeling better. His mother was the only thing keeping him sane, and clearly he was the only one for her as well.
They were two, against the dark world of Alberto Roco and his family.
When Sara finally stopped crying, she and Rodney walked into the house. Rodney could hear loud, masculine voices coming from the living room as they made their way to the stairs.“Brother,” a man said when they were on the middle of the steps. They stopped walking and Rodney turned to see a man who looked like a younger clone of his father. He was exceptionally handsome, tall and muscular as well.“Hey,” Rodney said.“Come on, let’s bond. Spend some time with me and my friends. We are brothers, after all. We might as well get to know each other since we will be leaving in the same house.”Rodney did not like the idea very much. He was hoping for negative results so he could leave as soon as possible. What was the point in getting to know each other when they would soon part ways?“I don’t think that’s necessary.”“Okay, I’m quite disappointed in you, Rodney. Are you going to cry like your mother as well? I doubt there’s anything interesting in your bedroom.”Rodney was content with ju
Rodney was so sad that he did not go down for lunch that day. He did not want to see anyone. Thankfully, his mother brought him some food. She asked him what was wrong but he refused to answer which made his mother think it was something to do with Rodrigo. Sara swore she would teach him a lesson despite Rodney’s pleas for her not to do anything. Rodney was already considered weak. If his mother got involved, they would make fun of him for running to mommy. “Mum, promise that you won’t say or do anything. I really don’t want any drama.” “I’m not going to let this people treat you like dirt, Rodney. Alberto is your father, and you have as much right as his other children to be here. Just because they lived here all their lives doesn’t mean they’re better than you. I want you to know that.” “Mum, I’m tired of you interfering in my affairs. I’m 18 now, okay? Just let me sort out my issues for once. You should stop treating me like a child so I can grow up.” His mother’s lips parted an
When they got back to the house, Rodney and his mother were taken to their respective rooms, given food and locked up. All the key copies were taken away.Rodney could barely eat because of anxiety. He was not claustrophobic but he was afraid of being locked up in any place, big or small. He tended to be quite paranoid sometimes, worrying about every possible thing that could go wrong. For instance, a fire could start and everyone would look for the nearest exit to save themselves, forgetting about Rodney and his mother. The more he thought about this scenarios, the more anxious he became. His heart was filled with dread and his nervous system felt like a train wreck. When it became too much, Rodney grabbed the plate of food, stormed to the window and opened it before throwing it to the ground below. The plate shattered into several small pieces and food splashed around. One of the guards saw the incident and shook his head at Rodney who closed the window and returned to the centre of
CHAPTER NINE Rodney hated his father more than he had ever hated anyone. As he got into the car, he thought of turning around and grabbing a gun from one of the guards and using it to hit his arrogant father’s head. The man got into a black Rolls Royce maintaining a smug look on his face. Rodney grimaced as he was forced into another car. He glared at the two guards who got into the car with him. As the car drove away from the neighbourhood, Rodney’s anger grew. His hate for Alberto was growing each passing minute was growing and he did not know if he could trust himself around his father anymore. He tried to calm himself down, telling himself that trying to kill Alberto was the most stupid thing he could think of. Alberto would kill him. Soon, they reached a shady looking uncompleted house in a secluded area. Rodney’s eyebrows furrowed when the two cars drove right into the garage. “Where is this place?” he asked, panic gripping him. The men in the car with him stayed silent as
Rodney watched Rodrigo come to a stop a few metres away from him. At any other time, he would have felt intimidated but that time he was too angry to care.“I’m sorry about the vase but I had no idea it belonged to your grandmother. I just want to know where my mother is. I need to see her.”Rodrigo slapped him across the face. Rodney lifted his hand to retaliate but Rodrigo grabbed it and tried to twist it. Summoning all the energy he had, Rodney pulled his hand from his half-brother’s tight grip. “So what? Little Roddy wants to see his mommy, and now everyone had to look for poor Roddy’s mommy,” Rodrigo spoke in a fake girly accent. Listen here little boy, just because you can’t find your mother does not mean you should throw tantrums like a two year old.”“I’m sorry I was wrong. Can someone tell me where she is?”Rodrigo shook his head. “First you are going to pick up all the little pieces of that vase and put them back together.”Rodney glanced at the scattered fragments. Some of
The friends continued until they reached the bench and sat down. “I’m sorry I came with her,” Harvey said. “We thought she was really concerned about you. She told me she wanted to check on you and I stupidly fell for it.” “Don’t fret over it. I have been letting her have so much power over me for many years. Maybe it is time for me to forget about her.” “Yes brother. You need to let Kali go. She will never be yours. She is not even the type of girl you need in your life. She hops from one man to another. I thought she at least cared for you as a friend but today she has proved me wrong. There is no need for you to have her in your life.” Rodney nodded. “I know. I don’t know why my heart won’t let go of her. I keep hoping that she will change one day and fall in love with me again. I don’t want to keep living like this, and yet she still continues to hold my heart. For the last few days, I haven’t thought of her a lot but now it will take a while for me to forget about her.” “Fo
Rodney’s heart was beating fast as he drew closer to Lilliana’s room. He didn’t know if it was open or closed. When he reached the door, he looked around before reaching out to touch the door knob. He twisted before pushing. Rodney froze when it actually moved. He had not expected it. Glancing at the hallway again, he entered and quickly closed the door. Once inside, he locked it. Save for the colours, the bedroom was almost identical to his. It had a more feminine touch, the theme being purple. Because of the beautifully done interior décor, it looked and smelled so much better than his. Rodney inhaled the beautiful scent and went towards the table. A drawer was open. Rodney saw several boxes and pieces of jewellery. He lifted a necklace with a stone on it. Having lived in the ghetto with no idea of what different gem stones looked like, Rodney couldn’t tell what stone it was. He removed a shiny looking box and placed it on the table. Opening it, he saw an exquisite looking pair
The car moved over a smooth road. At first, they could barely hear anything other than the sound of other cars. With time, they started hearing a variety of sounds; cars, people, and several other things. The car finally stopped and the person it in stepped out. “Should we get out now?” Sara asked. “I’m tired of being cramped in here.” “It’s almost as if you prefer to enjoy life at the mansion at the expense of your son,” Rodney shot back. The stayed put for a while. The person had not made any utterance so they had no idea who it was. After waiting for about five minutes, Rodney felt sure the person was now far away from the car. “I think we should go,” Rodney said. “Are you sure about this?” his mother asked. His heart was pounding hard against his heart and his body was shaking hard. He lifted his hand and pushed the door open. Slowly, he looked out and noticed they were in a quiet parking lot. The van was surrounded by a number of empty cars. Slowly, he stepped out. Standi
