First Birthday

*8 years later*

Today is a sunny day and the weather seemed friendly. The town looked even livelier than before with many people on the street. Shops were open and many things were being traded.

"Miss, a gold coin is all I have. Please, can you reduce the price of these clothes?" A young girl with red hair and blue eyes asked a shop owner.

The shop owner stared at this girl in disbelief. "You want me to reduce the price again? Little girl, aren't you been selfish?" She asked her.

"Miss, I'm not. Remember I told you that my parents died when I was very young leaving me to take care of my little brother and myself? The only job that keeps me going is the blacksmithing work I learned from my father, I am yet to be perfect in it and because of that, I don't earn much from it. The little I earn isn't enough to take care of us," the girl explained. As she spoke, tears began to gather in her eyes which the shop owner didn't fail to notice.

She gazed at the girl for quite some time and afterward, she sighed in frustration. "Girl, stop pretending already," she said with a slight frown on her face. Seeing that the girl wasn't stopping, she sighed. "Fine, just take the clothes and leave before I change my mind," she said to her.

The girl abruptly stopped crying and started smiling. "Miss, you are so kind. You will get married to a rich man, I assure you," she happily said.

"Hmm, I'm already married, girl."

The girl covered her mouth and let out a slight chuckle. "Oh, that is great. I'll be going, bye!" She waved and hurried out of the shop with the bag of clothes on her back.

She wasn't only carrying a bag of clothes with her, but she was also carrying a basket of food items. She hurried out of the shop and began to head toward the end of the street.

"Mira!" Someone called her and when she turned around, it was an elderly lady. She was standing at the front of her shop with her hands folded and a frown on her face.

Seeing the lady, the girl gasped. She would have run away but it was already late to do that, the only choice she had was to go over to meet the woman.

"Madam Kate," Mira mumbled as she headed to the Lady's shop. When she got there, she stood a bit far from the lady. "Good day, Madam Kate."

"Are you sure that the greeting is from your heart?" The lady asked her.

"Madam Kate, I—"

"Where is my money?" The lady asked Mira, not allowing her to finish her statement. "It's been over two months and you don't want to pay your debts, haven't I been lenient enough with you?"

Mira bit her lower lips, she didn't know what to say to the lady because she was at fault.

Two months ago, she borrowed 20 gold coins from the lady to buy some things for the house with the promise of paying soon. Each time the lady asks about her money, she'll plead with tears until the lady's heart softens again, allowing the paying time to extend again. It's now more than two months and the lady's patience has run out already.

Mira dropped the things she was carrying and fell to her knees, at this point, this was all she could think of.

"Madam Kate, please give me one more chance and I promise to return the money to you. I know you have tried so much for me and I am grateful but right now, there's no money on me. These things you are seeing here were bought on credit, I sincerely do not have money. Just give me some time and I'll pay back the money," she humbly said to the lady.

After staring at her, the lady sighed and helped her up. "I know how things are hard in this town, especially for you children with no parent. I'll give you some time, make sure to pay up, okay?"

Mira beamed and wiped the tears from her eyes. "Thank you so much, Madam Kate!" She replied while smiling.

"That's fine, you can go home," the lady said and Mira nodded and carried her things.

"Goodbye, Madam Kate!" Mira waved at her and continued the journey. After she left, the lady sighed and then went back inside her shop.

"Dear, you didn't collect the money again?" An elderly man asked the lady after she went back inside the shop.

"No, darling. I feel pity for her," the lady replied with another sigh.

"Hmm, true but next time, make sure to collect the money. Business isn't all about pity," the man mumbled.

"Yes, darling. I understand."

Mira left, increasing her steps as she walked. It was getting pretty late and the road leading to her house was somewhat quiet, only the sounds coming from the moving leaves could be heard, as well as the chirping sounds from birds.

She followed the path leading deeper into the bush not minding how extremely quiet and cold the place was. For a girl her age, she was supposed to be frightened or perhaps conscious of her surrounding because she was just a girl of about 14 years.

Soon, she arrived at an old-looking house. There, by the front of the house was a small boy with white hair and red eyes. The moment he saw her, he sprang to his feet and rushed to welcome her.

"Big sister!" He called and hugged her tightly.

Mira dropped the things she was holding and returned the hug, hugging him with the same energy he was using. "Did you miss me?" She jokingly asked him.

"No," he replied and broke from the hug. "You've been gone since morning but I didn't miss you because I know you will always come back to me," he said and looked away shyly.

"Is that so?" Mira asked with a smile. "Okay, what if I don't come back one day?" She asked him.

The question was sudden that it made the boy turn and look at her before answering. "I'll find you even if it means turning the world upside down. When I find you, I'll bring you home."

There was this look in his eyes that Mira could not understand, she was still a young child and so there was no way she could understand it.

"Really? My Ryan is a strong boy, huh?" She teased while pulling him on his cheeks. "Come, let's go in," she said and began to carry the things she came back with.

"Big sister, I'm serious about what I said. I'll turn the world upside down and bring you home," Ryan mumbled. He didn't feel happy that his sister was taking his words as a joke

"Okay, okay. I believe you," Mira replied, trying to suppress her laughter from coming out.

When they went in, Mira untied the things she brought back home. Among them, was a small round cake and some non-alcoholic drinks.

"Guess why I bought them for?" She asked Ryan.

"For dinner?" Ryan asked.

Mira laughed for a while before replying. "It's for your birthday, dumb head! Have you forgotten?"

"My birthday? Does that mean I'm eight years today?" Ryan was excited as he asked her.

"Of course. And that's why I bought you a cake," she replied.

In the next second, Ryan was hugging her tightly. "Thank you, big sister."

"Don't worry..." she replied and then broke from the hug. She cupped his small face in her hands and stared at him. "We'll always celebrate your birthdays together, alright?"

"Yes."

"Good! Now, let's begin!"

Mira rushed into the kitchen, brought a small knife, and then stuck it inside the cake. She directed him on how they were going to do it — She'll sing a birthday song for him before he can then cut the cake.

After the celebration, Ryan went to sleep while Mira began to clear the mess up. After she was done, she strolled to the back of the house and entered the room that was there. She walked to the table where a photo was kept and picked it up, tears began to gather in her eyes.

"Master, today is Ryan's birthday. Are you happy with what I did for him? I named him after you because you were the only person we had in the entire world. He is growing well and doesn't give me trouble, I like him."

As she spoke, tears began to drop from her eyes. She would never forget the day her master was taken away by the chief's men. The look in his eyes... though, he was smiling, it was a pain-filled smile.

"Master, if you were here, things wouldn't be this bad for us. I've become a high debtor, almost the whole town knows me as a result of it... If I knew things would end up this way, I would have listened to you and strived to be perfect in this work..." She paused and wiped the tears in her eyes. "Master, I miss you. No, we miss you," she mumbled while crying silently.

Outside the room, Ryan was by the door listening to everything Mira was saying. It pained him to hear her cry, even seeing her tears hurt him a lot as a child. He clenched his fists for a while and then walked away from there.
