Chapter 14: Temporary Resting Place

What Ethan said had brought Chronna back to the present.

“Yeah, you’re right. I never thought I would pilot a spaceship through a rough asteroid belt while fighting off a mutating space Salamander,” Chronna replied as she chuckled at the absurdity of her sentence.

Ethan chuckled with her. He said, “I wouldn’t have told you to drive the ship if I didn’t believe you could do it.”

Before their conversation ended, they had reached their destination already; the grand living quarter of the irregulars.

The living quarter at the moment consisted of two stories, tall structure with approximately 199 living spaces side by side.

Pointing at the last one, Ethan said, “That’s the one you go in.”

Just as Chronna and Ethan were about to head towards their current living spaces, an insect-like creature wearing something that looked like a mailman would wear, but not something a mailman from earth would wear, landed right in front of the duo.

“Greetings, Ethan! It’s so good to see you!” The creature said in a nasal voice while flapping its wings as it set itself on the ground.

“Ahh! Isn’t it Irregular-25? How nice to see you?!” Ethan asked, forcing a smile, as he was not in the mood to engage in chit chat right then.

Chronna silently watched the awkward exchange. She also then realized that Irregulars did come in many types and lifeforms.

“And this must be the new one,” the Insectoid said as it moved its gaze over to Chronna.

“Yes, this is Irregular-199. Her name is Chronna,” Ethan replied, trying to end the conversation. “We need to go―”

“When did you get here, newbie?” Irregular-25 asked Chronna, interrupting Ethan.

“It’s only been a day,” Chronna answered, seemingly uneasy.

“We had a long trip, 25. Do you mind catching up later? We have to freshen up,” Ethan intervened to let Irregular-25 know that this wasn’t the best time for chit chat.

“Oh yes! Of course, you two look tired; I am late for my mail runs too. See you soon, Ethan and Chronna!” Irregular-25 said as he flew off, flapping his cicada-like wings.

“You should head into your quarters and freshen up, and let us meet in 20 minutes for supper,” Ethan proposed.

Chronna agreed to the offer as she realized she hadn’t eaten anything since she got to MDWD.

Ethan was finally entering into his temporary lair in the building. Actually, it was still a place reserved for him, even when he already had a place not far from MDWD.

Since he was so tired, he might as well use it.

Ethan collapsed on his small little bed, throwing his bag of gadgets and supplies on the edge of the bed.

He reflected on the mission he and Chronna just accomplished.

What if they hadn’t gotten there on time?

The captain would have never been able to survive the ordeal. The brave man planned on sacrificing his own life to save the life of his space troopers.

The Salamander was indeed unstoppable; how do you even kill something that gets stronger the more you hurt it? You don’t.

Ethan tried to imagine what it could have been like if he hadn’t gotten his hands on the plasma blaster when the Salamander was ready to lunge at him from the escape pod.

What if the pod malfunctioned?

He scared himself, thinking about all the possible scenarios. Well, there’s no point in thinking about it.

It all came with the job that he had. He was the inter-dimensional pizza delivery guy, and he had to bring food to some very important creatures of the multiverse. If he didn’t help them to save their timelines, who would?

While thinking these things, Ethan got up from his bed, and he had to take a shower; he got some of the slime that was on the Salamander’s body off him, and it was disgusting.

Picking his towel up from his bed, he entered the shower.

As he cooled his head under the cold water of the shower and he thought about Chronna. He was used to this way of life by then.

But Chronna’s new there.

She left everybody and everything she knew behind her. No one even remembered her anymore.

Did she really deserve this?

Was this really for the greater good?

Who knows, this wasn’t something someone like Ethan had to think about or had to worry about, but he still did, he knew how tragic it felt to forget everything you have ever done or have ever been in your life and start a completely new life, and that, to live like this.

Oh well, he thought to himself as he wiped himself off, time to grab some grub at the eatery down the street.

He wants to take Chronna down there and eat some of their exquisite multi-dimensional food.

Ethan came out of the shower and quickly put on some fresh clothes that he had kept ready before going into the shower.

Now, I have to get Chronna, he thought.

Reaching Chronna’s door, he knocked three times. As soon as he did, Chronna opened the door for him.

“Ready to eat?” Ethan asked with a small smile.

“Yes, I am starving. Where are you going to eat?” She asked as she closed the door behind her coming out.

“It’s one of my favorite places to eat here, and it’s just down the street,” he explained.

“Let’s go then!” Chronna replied with a smile.

It didn’t take them long to reach the eatery Ethan was talking about. As they sat down to eat, Ethan asked Chronna to try the Steak leaf.

Chronna had no idea what that even meant. She asked with confusion, “What on earth even is that?”

Ethan was just realizing that he needed to elaborate a bit more before Chronna could feel comfortable eating anything there.

“Well, it’s steak from a planet situated in the 3rd dimension. It’s a planet where beef grows on trees, and here you can find steaks made from those meats. It’s really quite a deli-―” before Ethan could finish his sentence, a loud beeping noise broke it. It was Ethan’s beeper.

They have a new order now.

“Looks like there’s a new order up,” Ethan said with an awkward smile.

But hearing that, Chronna seemed to get excited.

“Let’s head out then!” Chronna said, standing up from her table, ready to leave.

“Don’t you want something to eat first?” Ethan asked, seemingly concerned for her.

“Just whip us up a pizza on the way on your 6d printer,” she replied with a playful smirk.

“Alright then, let’s head off,” Ethan responded with a smile on his face. He then pulled out his portal machine to set the course for their next pizza run.

Biting into her slice of pepperoni pizza, Chronna asked Ethan about the order and the planet they were going to visit this time.

“Well, this seems to really like his anchovies. He ordered two anchovy pizzas with mountains of that stuff on top of it,” he said while flying through space-time.

“I see. I don’t mind anchovies on my pizza as well, so I don’t blame the guy for liking it,” she said as she took another mouth full of the pizza they were eating.

“It's a planet that’s in the 12th dimension. I haven’t been there before.” Ethan said, trying to locate the planet. His eyes then brightened as he exclaimed, “There it is!”
