Chapter 4

"Please help me out here," he pleaded, looking past her rudeness. "I have an appointment with the general manager in a few minutes," he added.

The woman shifted from him before she turned to look at him disdainfully from his head to his toe before she spoke to him.

"Did you even have a bath this morning?" She asked, her nose scrunched in disgust, leaving him confused. "You stink!" She spat without waiting for him to say anything.

"You do not look like you should be in here in the first place, and I blame the security men for letting such a haggard looking and obviously homeless riffraff into this building," she said.

"I am not lying. He requested to see me," he said. She let out a scornful laughter.

"If there is anyone who is more aware of the rules here, it is our boss, so if he did not issue you a pass card," she waved hers in front of his face. "Then that means that you are not supposed to be here."

"He called me, I promise you. I am not lying," he was persistent.

"Then why don't you call him so he knows that you are here?" She asked him.

He wondered why he did not think of it earlier as he took out his phone. He dialed the exact number that has called him the previous night, but it went straight to voicemail, leaving him nervous and frustrated.

"I thought as much. You are a scam just like I assumed, and I promise you that if you do not get your stinking self out of here, I will call security to throw you out immediately," she said to him without remorse.

"But I need to see him first. Maybe if you can help me upstairs, he might recognize me," he pleaded. She scoffed at him before she spoke.

"Leave here immediately," she flared. "If you don't, I will not just get you thrown out of here but I will also make sure to call the police on you.

I'm sure you don't want to spend your weekend in jail so what is it going to be?"

He wanted to say something but she was already signaling the security men to come get him.

"What is going on here?" A lady asked from behind them. Aiden turned around sharply to see a curvy woman in a black dress standing there with a big handbag.

She had her hair in a complete bun, outlining her slim face and her pronounced jawline.

"Secretary ma'am, this young man here claims to have an appointment with the general manager this morning," the receptionist explained.

"The boss does not have an appointment with anyone this morning," the lady said curtly. She did not bother to spare Aiden a second glance as his appearance was not even appealing to him.

"Tell security to throw him out," she ordered as she tilted her head towards the door.

"I'm not going anywhere until I see the manager," he insisted, finally stating his decision firmly. "He called me yesterday, and I want to see him," he continued as he took out his phone and showed it to the secretary.

She looked at it for a while and noticed that it was the same number as her boss's. She looked intently as though she was going to change her mind. All the while, she was thinking of the best thing to say to him.

"If my boss had an appointment with you, I am the secretary and I would have been informed about it, but your name is not on the schedule," she said.

He wanted to say something but she interrupted him.

"What you are doing now is nothing out of the ordinary because a lot of people have come in here as well in the past claiming that they were called by him," she continued.

"Are you trying to say that I am a scam?" He asked.

She looked at him and wondered about his level of confidence. Just then the security men arrived.

"Throw him out!" She ordered as she turned around and swiped her card at the elevator.

It opened up immediately and she got in. She was still putting in the floor number she was headed to where Aiden saw it as a good opportunity.

He wiggled his way out of the guard of the security men, taking them unawares. He shot towards the elevator in a sprint, and was inside before it closed and before the security men could get to him.

"What the hell are you doing in here, you stinking piece of shit?" She cursed out loud.

"I told you that I needed to see the manager," he said, only concerned when they would get to the executive floor.

"I see that you are trying to play smart with me, but I will deal with you myself. The manager would not even know that you were here," she spat, still fuming with anger at the thought that he was faster than she was.

He did not say anything to her anymore. All her rants were not his major focus at that time. He needed to think about his next line of action.

They soon got to the top floor and the elevator dinged open. She rushed out and headed for the landline to probably call security.

Aiden, on the other hand, looked around, and soon, he saw the office that had 'GENERAL MANAGER' boldly written on the top of the door.

He headed towards it immediately and knocked hard on the door.

The secretary saw what was going on and put down the telephone immediately.

No one ever knocked at her boss's door. Some specific people were allowed in, and each of them had a special pass so they would not have to knock.

If her boss got distracted by the knock on the door, he might have to suspend her for nonchalance.

She rushed towards him to stop him from knocking, but he banged harder as he saw her.

"You cannot do that. It's not allowed here!"

Surprisingly, the door slid open and a tall handsome middle-aged man stepped out. He wore a crisply ironed three-piece suit that screamed wealth. A pair of spectacles covered his eyes.

"What is going on here?" He asked in a deep baritone voice as he looked from the secretary to Aiden, who had suddenly become timid.

"This crazy man here claims to have an appointment with you this morning," the secretary explained.

"I told him that he is not on the list today but he insisted that you called him yesterday."

"Wait. Are you Aiden Cox?" The man’s eyes widened.
