Chapter 10

When Ms. Precious returned to the office, she was surprised to still see Elvis seated with his legs across the other.

"You said you wouldn't be here when I return." She said, flopping on her seat.

"I changed my mind. Do you have a problem with that?" He asked, raising his brow at her.

"Not at all." She replied, chuckling softly. After a brief silence, she cleared her throat to get his attention and when she did, she pushed her hair behind her ears.

"Aren't you going to tell me what happened? Your neck is still reddened. Who tried to kill you?" She asked, her face masked with worry.

As if that was not enough, she left her seat then went to his side, "Tell me, it's time we involve the police because the next time the perpetrator will kill you." She said,

"I don't think so." He said, chuckling as the discomfort Silas would probably be facing at the moment.

"It's not funny. Please tell me what happened so in case your father asks I will have an answer to give him." She said, towering above him with her hands across her chest.

"If I rather ask, tell him I said, I'm a grown man and can handle myself."

"Elvis… stop acting this way. The more I see your red neck, the more nervous I become." She mumbled.

At that instant,he pulled his shirt up to cover the bruise. Infact, the reason why he was still in the office was because of it. He wanted the redness to reduce a bit before he embarked on his trip to the hospital.

"Are you still nervous?" He asked.

"Come on, why are you so casual with all these? We are talking about your health here… I mean your life." He scowled.

"Fine. Silas did this to me." He revealed seeing that she wouldn't stop bugging him until he spilled.

"What?" She gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "Was he trying to kill you or something?" She scowled.

"Don't reveal my identity to anyone, keep me hidden."

"Yeah." She nodded as she returned to her seat. "I'm glad you asked me to send him a sack letter. You wouldn't believe he was molesting the workers under him. Finally, there will be peace and tranquility in the accounting department." She reeled.

"I'm not surprised." He replied inaudibly as he resumed flipping through the document.

Several minutes later, a distress knock was heard and after exchanging glances with Ms. Precious, Elvis dashed into the bathroom. He didn't want anyone to see him in the presidential office.

"Please come in." Ms. Precious invited and almost immediately, the door creaked open, revealing Silas who stormed in with his face masked with anger.

"Mr. Silas… you don't look well." She said, pretending to be unaware of the current situation on ground.

"What was my offense?" He barked.

"I don't know. The president asked me to hand over a letter to you. What was the content if I may ask?" She asked, pushing her hair behind her ears.

"I was relieved of my job for no reason."

"What?" Ms. Precious gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Meanwhile, Elvis was resting against the door with a smirk on his lips. He really wanted to see Silas reaction but couldn't, else his cover would be blown.

"Can I speak with the president? I need an explanation for this."

"I'm sorry but the president doesn't want to see anyone for the moment. Don't worry, I will pass your message to him and whatever he says, I will text you via email." She said,

"Please do, I will appreciate it." He said solemnly.

"I will. I'm sorry for the inconvenience."

A few minutes after he left,Elvis walked out of the bathroom then placed the documents on her desk. "I'm done. Kudos to you too." He winked.

"It's nothing."

"Don't forget to send the email right now."

"I'm on it." She replied, flopping on her seat as she pushed the laptop to herself.

After one last look at his reflection on his phone screen, he turned towards Ms. Precious.

"Done." She said, with a broad smile as she rubbed her hands in glee. She was glad that Silas was fully out of the company, the rumors about his brutality was already a rumor outside the office but because of the president's absence, nothing had been done.

"Kudos." He winked again before he stepped out of the office.

With his hands tucked into his pocket, he made his way towards the elevator. He was already out of the elevator on the ground floor when the janitor from earlier pointed towards him.

"He was the man Silas assaulted earlier." He announced it to his colleagues. Slightly embarrassed, he increased his pace but they soon caught up with him.

"His neck isn't red again. You would have seen him…"

"I'm fine now." Elvis interrupted the janitor. He had sighted Silas and he wanted to make a little fun of him before he left for the hospital.

"Glad you are. Guess what, he is no longer the head of the accounting department. In Fact, the president sacked him without stating his reasons." The janitor reeled, excitement coursing through his body. His colleagues too were excited.

"That's so unfortunate." Elvis replied, pretending to be hurt.

"Unfortunate you mean? Don't say that again. If only he crossed paths with him again, you would be the happiest person when the news of his sack gets to your ears." He scoffed.

"Everyone hide, Silas Deane is coming." Someone yelled out of the blue. Instead of everyone scrambling like before, they all stood in their positions as they laughed and pointed at him.

Silas, shame-faced , began to run out of the building but the crowd chased after him. Slightly disappointed since he was unable to mock Silas, Elvis just shrugged then resumed his walk.

When he got to the hospital, after speaking with his mother in the private ward, he went to see his father.

He had barely taken his seat at the foot of the bed he was lying on when his father said, "Thank you son."

"What for?" Elvis asked with a raised brow.

"Taking over the company of course. Don't worry, it wouldn't be a hard task for you. Ms. Precious is going to help and guide you all through the way."

"But dad, I should be looking for ways to bring you and mom back to a healthy life."

"I already told you to leave the job to the doctors. You aren't one so you shouldn't bother yourself about our wellbeing. We are doing just fine." He said, pulling himself up.

"I hope you don't expect me to sit back at the office and watch the doctors find a cure for you and mom's illness."

"Of course, that's their job and as the newly appointed president, you have to focus on your job and ensure a smooth running of the organization." He said.

Scrunching his face in anger, Elvis turned around and in the process revealed his reddened neck. He had managed to mask it so well from his mother but had failed now that he was with his father.

"And what happened to your neck? Did you get into a fight?" His father asked, startling him. It took all that he had in him not to give himself away.

"It's not that father." He chuckled lightly, trying to come up with a lie for him.

"Tell me, what happened then?"

"I was trying to fix my tie but someone, I got stuck and I was struggling…"

"What? How many times have I asked you to be careful? You would have killed yourself, thanks to your carelessness." He scowled.

"I'm sorry father." He said, his gaze fixed on the wall.

"I should be the one to be sorry. Did your mother see it?"

"She didn't."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm being sincere here. She didn't."

"Thank goodness. I was already getting scared she would start worrying. Please be careful, okay."

"Yes, I will." He said and after spending the next twenty minutes by his side, he rose.

"I should be on my way now." He said.

"Yeah. Take care of yourself." His father called after him.

"I will." He already had his hand wrapped around the knob of the door when he turned around swiftly then made quick strides towards his bed.

"Promise me one thing." He said.

"What's it?"

"You wouldn't call Ms. Precious to inquire about me and when she calls you won't ask after me."

"Why?"

"Because it's embarrassing. I'm grown now." He said with a pitiable voice to convince him.

"Okay. I promise."

"Thank you." He replied with a broad smile and after placing a quick kiss on the back of his father's palm, he left the private ward.

Still smiling, he made his way out of the hospital then flagged down a cab. Just as he was about to tell the driver his destination, his eyes fell on Sarah, sitting in the owner's seat of the cab.
