Chapter 11

Sarah flipped her hair to a side with a broad smile on her face. She knew Elvis had seen her and so she wanted him to be aware she had seen him too.

"Mister, your direction." The cab man said, breaking the uncomfortable silence in the car.

"Is she your passenger too?" He asked, nodding at Sarah.

"Of course I am. Am I posing a threat to you?" She asked with a light chuckle.

"I'm sorry, I will pass." Elvis said hurriedly and even before the cab man could say a word, he had stuttered out of the car.

Clenching his fists, he began to walk down the road with a scowl on his face. The least person he wanted to see was Sarah but there she was — smiling back at him.

"I should have looked properly before boarding." He snapped, fist pumping the air.

"Hey, be careful. Do you want to hit me?" Sarah asked, jolting Elvis in the process and making him stop on his track.

Frowning, he swirled in her direction, "Why?" He asked with a large scowl.

"What are you talking about?"

"You ought to be in the cab."

"Was that why you left?" She chuckled, her hands on her hips. "You are still acting childish." She added with a scoff.

"Please, leave me alone. We aren't…"

"You still haven't changed. Aren't you tired of living in poverty? You should be at work right now, working really hard to make ends meet and to save up for the future. You are so pathetic." She said in a loud voice making a few heads turn in her direction.

Slightly embarrassed, he buried his head to avoid the gazes he was receiving from passers by.

When Sarah wouldn't stop battering him with her words,he tucked his hands in his pockets then turned around to leave but instead of letting him be, she continued to trail after him.

"Sarah please, stop pestering me." He scowled, halting at the same time.

"Why should I? Elvis, you might see me as a villian right now but that is not true. I love you so much that's why I want you to come out from your poverty stricken life. If I didn't love you…"

"Heavens knows that no matter what you do or say, I won't believe you love me." He interrupted harshly.

"Of course I do." She countered, rolling her eyes to the back of her head. She was apparently having the best part of her day making fun of him.

"Take your love elsewhere. I don't need it." He snapped as he flagged down a taxi. Before she could get in, the driver rode away, whisking Elvis away from her.

"We will meet again." She yelled after the cab.

Two minutes into the ride, the cab man turned in his direction, "Sir, where are you heading?" He asked.

"Sanway Café Shop." He replied, sinking into the chair.

"That will be $10." The cab man said, casting him a brief glance.

"Just drive, I will pay you." He said angrily. When the driver didn't respond, he sank deeper into the chair and with his eyes tightly closed, he let out a sigh.

Sarah's act back there was the least of his problems, he was going to use the twenty minute drive to the café shop to brainstorm on how he was going to help his father.

Drained, he was already drifting off into a sleep when the car came to a halt and the cab man tapped his shoulder. He continued tapping him until he was fully awake.

Wearing a scowl, he asked, "What?"

"We arrived." He announced.

"Okay." He mumbled, wiping his sleepy eyes with a hand as he reached out for his wallet with the other.

After paying for his fare, he immediately dashed into the shop, located his favorite seat that overlooked the whole café then settled in it.

It wasn't long after his arrival that the waitress arrived with a cup of coffee on a tray. "I was thinking you won't come after your last visit." She smiled. He was a regular customer in the café shop and all the workers knew him.

The last time he visited because of his poor looks and clothing, a rich lady had trampled on his foot and when he drew her attention to it, she erupted with anger then upturned a scalding cup of coffee on him.

"I was just unfortunate, it isn't a big deal." He said with a shrug.

"Well, that aside. The coffee is on the house, courtesy of the manager after he heard what had happened."

"Thank you. I appreciate it." He said then took a long drink of the burning liquid.

When the waitress disappeared, he quickly brought out his phone to resume his research he had called off earlier. It was the pitiable condition his father was in that made him resume and this time around, he was determined to get a lasting solution for it.

For the next few hours, he was engrossed in his phone as he tried to locate hospitals all around the world who had patients similar to his father.

"Father's illness isn't common. I doubt if it is even in the bibliography." He mumbled, drinking from his cup of cold coffee.

The determination to save his father still gnawing on him, he resumed scrolling through his phone after a brief break.

Suddenly, he rose then let out a loud scream and at once all the attention of the customers and workers in the café were drawn to him.

Seeing what his excitement had caused him, he quickly covered his mouth then lowered himself on his seat.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean that." He said with a bow. Only then did everyone return their gaze to their business.

His relentless effort had ended when he stumbled into the page of the Cator Family who were renowned in the field of medicine. He had managed to stumble on the page after clicking on the link under another famous medical doctor blog.

With what he had read, he was convinced that the Cator Family would be able to nurse his father back to health.

Smirking, he emptied the remaining content of the coffee into his mouth and after tossing the cup into the trash can, he made his way to the counter to pay.

Just as he was about to place some money on the counter, the waitress from earlier held his hand. "I told you the cup is free today." She said with a little smile.

"Oops, i forgot all about it. Thank you." He said, returning her warm smile.

"You're welcome." She said, "About earlier, are you alright?" She asked in low tones.

"Earlier?" Elvis asked. He was a bit confused.

"Yeah. You suddenly screamed and all attention was on you."

Smirking, he replied, "I allowed my excitement to overwhelm me. I'm fine, thanks for asking." He was already at the door when he turned around and after paying for another cup of coffee, he left for a clothes shop.

The shop was about fifteen minutes walk from the café shop but instead of taking a cab like he would have done, he had decided to walk the distance while sipping his coffee.

"Cator Family." He said out of the blue then halted suddenly thus making the lady behind him bump into his back.

"What are you thinking?" She scowled, pushing him aside.

"I'm sorry, I had no idea you were behind me." He called after her but she didn't act as if she had heard.

"People and temper. Glad she wasn't carrying groceries else I would have been done for." He mused, darting his eyes around his current environment until his eyes landed on a toy shop.

Opposite the toy shop, there was a canopy so he decided to cross over and sit while he gathered his thoughts.

The next half hour saw him under the canopy with his cup of coffee on his lips as he thought about how he was going to meet with the Cator Family.

He hadn't heard of them before and so he was a bit skeptical. His first instinct was to get confirmation from his father's doctor but he feared he was going to mention it to his father so he waved the option off.

The next person that crossed his mind was Ms. Precious so he went ahead to put a call across her. Fortunately, immediately he put her on the line, she received his call to his delight.

"Have you heard of the Cator Family?" He asked.

"Cator Family? I have no idea." She replied.

"Okay." And with that, he hung up.

"I will make more inquiries." He said to himself as he rose to continue his walk. He had five more minutes before he got to the clothes shop.

When he had finished shopping, he walked up the counter to inform the shop owner who had been giving him a weird look since he arrived.

"Are you sure you can afford those clothes you piled up there?" The shop owner asked even before he could state his mission.
